Start Early
When you are young, it’s tempting to think there is no rush to save. This is why you should set short-term saving goals for yourself, because once you get the hang of saving a small sum of money, you will then be motivated to start saving large sums for your future.
Shop Smart
If you happen to see a top at Shop A at $15 and a similar top at Shop B for $9, go for the latter! By spending wisely, you will have extra cash to do other things.
Go out and network
6 7 8
If you’re low on cash, you tend to stay home more as going out would mean additional expenses. Do go out. Because when you’re surviving on low funds, you need to network more than ever. The more people you meet, the greater your chances of finding a job for some side-income.
Spend wisely
Think twice before you splurge on a $2 beverage to go with your $3 economical rice meal. Don’t buy it if you don’t need it.

Michelle Ng Xin Ying
Diploma in Integrated Events Management School of Hospitality Year 1 “Always save before spending, and don’t fall for marketing gimmicks. For example, they might be selling three burgers for $5, but I only need one for $2! I also bring my own food and prefer wholemeal bread. It keeps my energy up and fills me for longer period of time.”

8:15AM
It’s great to reach school early! I’m excited for my Engineering Design class today!
7:55AM
Back in class, our facilitator, Mr Low Shin Yeh, shares with us the problem statement of the day and briefs us on what needs to be done. Our task today is to remove the solar panels we used previously for our solar car and replace it with batteries and a sensor board to see if it works.
We went through the tools that we have before approaching Mr Low to ask him some questions.
8:30AM - 9:00AM As today’s lesson is a continuation of what we did last week, we collected our solar car and the tools we need from another room at the start of the class.
During our first study break, I went over to the W4 Lawn Canteen to buy a drink.
9:00AM - 9:30AM I head back to class and work with my team to modify our solar car. Wow, I really love such hands-on lessons. They’re so fun!

With today’s lesson being more practical-based, we are tasked to present our solar car to the class at the end of the day. We begin by first creating the car frame using the tools we collected at the start of the day. It’s great that we can work so well together!
It’s time for lunch! I’m getting my favourite chicken rice at W4 Lawn Canteen.
Seated at our favourite spot, this is where my friends and I enjoy our lunch!
11:15AM - 12:00PM
After lunch, we continue with our solar car. Here I am filing the wooden stick in order to insert the wheels!
12:00PM - 1:30PM
It’s time for our group’s presentation! I’m very excited to present our solar car to Mr Low! I hope he’ll be pleased with our effort!
Once the solar car is ready, we then test it on wooden blocks outside the class to see if it is able to stop within 5cm before hitting the wall! Guess what? IT WORKS!
Now, I’m heading off to Causeway Point to hang out with my friend. Bye!
1:30PM - 3:30PM
Our solar car is a SUCCESS!
About the Facilitator
Mr Low Shin Yeh has worked as an engineer in both the manufacturing and research and development areas for six years before joining Republic Polytechnic (RP). After facilitating in RP for two years, he feels that RP students are very proactive and hands-on; this can be credited to the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) system.
To end the lesson, Mr Low goes through the 6th Presentation (6P) with us which offers the suggested solution for today’s problem.
About the Engineering Design module:
This module traces key steps in an engineering design process. The objective of this module is to introduce the common aspects of engineering design including contradictions, constraints, paradigms, specifications, human factors and more. Students will be given an array of design problems to engage in and solve.
It’s been a fun and fruitful day in school! Since I have no meetings or Creative Engagement (CE) talks to go for, I will finish up my Reflection Journal, Quiz and Evaluation at home.
What’s PBL?
RP offers a holistic educational experience through various innovative teaching approaches, leveraging the fundamentals of Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Guided by trained facilitators, students work in teams to solve problems and present viable solutions to their peers. This way, problem-solving process skills and teamwork are being developed on a daily basis through small-group collaboration. Such PBL sessions provide immense value to our students, as they prepare them to take on the challenges they will potentially face in the real working world.
PBL Workshops for secondary school students
RP regularly conducts hands-on workshops for secondary school students to give them a taste of what the learning process is like in RP. Led by RP’s own student facilitators, the two-hour plus workshops are usually held at RP campus and are free for students. Experience RP today! My father is the sole-breadwinner of the family and having two younger siblings, I hope to lighten my father’s burden as he’s earning less than $1,500 per month. Does RP offer schemes that can help students in similar situations like mine? I am currently a Year 1 student.
A
Bursaries are available to help defray living expenses for financially needy students who are Singapore Citizens. To be eligible, the gross monthly household per capita income needs to be $1,700 and below. Application for bursary opens once every semester, so look out for email announcements via your RP email account. Each bursary is valid for one year and you must submit a new application every new academic year. To read more about bursaries, visit www.rp.edu.sg/bursary. You may also email your enquiries to help-bursary@rp.edu.sg. You can also email help-student@rp.edu.sg to find out more information about other schemes available for needy students.

Q
Is it possible to apply for scholarships with my O-Level preliminary results?
A
Yes, students with outstanding preliminary results and excellent CCA achievements can apply for scholarships. To find out more, email help-scholarship@rp.edu.sg
Q
Though I do enjoy working in a team and can put in the extra effort if needed, I’m just not a “people person”. I’m happiest when working and contributing from behind the scenes. When I graduate from RP next year, I would really like a job or career with an environment where I can work and be left alone for a majority of the time. Could you suggest any career path for shy, quiet, introverted types like me when I graduate next year?
A
One possible way to discover yourself is to take a personality test. Many of which are available online for free. Use them to gain insights into your personality, leadership qualities and working styles. When you are aware of your interests and personality, chances are that you will have a better idea on what career you can work towards.

After completing my O-Level examinations this year, I am thinking of taking up either engineering or information technology course at RP but how would I know what courses might be suitable for me? Could I still switch course halfway if I have been accepted into one?
A
Join us at the 2013 RP Open House to find out more on the courses we have to offer so that you can determine which are suitable for you. Or, log on to www.rp.edu.sg/Full_Time_Courses.aspx for a comprehensive list of the courses available in 2013. All students are expected to complete the course in which they are enrolled into. However, under exceptional circumstances, students may request for a course transfer, which may be allowed if there are vacancies. Nevertheless, students will not be allowed to transfer to any course if they do not meet the relevant cut-off point or other entry requirements.
Q
I am a current Secondary 4 Normal Academic student and I have heard about the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP). Where can I find out more about the courses RP offers under the PFP?

Before becoming a teaching staff at RP, Dr Wong Luh Cherng was the Director of Materials Technology Centre at the Productivity and Standards Board Singapore. Formally trained in mechanical engineering, Dr Wong, a Materials Science PhD holder, also worked at Defense Research Establishment Valcartier in Quebec, Canada. His current interest is in the decentralised transformation of wastes to useful resources as means to promote social-environmental self-responsibility in urban and rural communities.
What inspired you to teach, and to teach at RP?
It is a tradition in Germany for professionals in this industry, to teach and share the experience. For me it was the right time to change to a teaching assignment. I chose to teach in RP because I grew up with Problem-Based Learning (PBL), as all elements of PBL were applied to my entire schooling process; hence, it was the perfect match.
I believe education must be inspired through how it can solve societal needs and be anchored on the aspiration of the learners to see potential in themselves for solving problems, hence I was drawn to the PBL pedagogy at RP. Being a facilitator offers me the opportunity to re-examine and understand concepts that I have always taken for granted. At RP, I also get to pursue my life-long passion for research together with like-minded people.
What do you love about RP?
What do you love about RP?
Besides having a modern, spacious and friendly environment, I love the relaxed atmosphere in RP as it allows me to engage with my students on a fun and personal level.
I love not knowing what I will encounter for the day while interacting with young people who are keen and yet skeptical about what they would be learning. Caring for their mental development varies from student to student, and as staff we never run out of meaningful conversations during lunch or while taking the same lift. These are small talks with noble meanings.
What inspired you to teach, and to teach at RP?
Your philosophy as an educator is… I see the students as young adults, who are capable to do the same work as I have done and who can make their own decisions responsibly. I see them as applicants for a job, as staff members whom I want to have in my team. I believe when you apply what you learn as a PBL student, there is no problem you cannot solve.
Alexander Schlag Senior Academic Staff School of Engineering
Your philosophy as an educator is… The quality of questions fielded between both facilitator and student is important. If a student asks a question, which tends to be general due to limited prior-knowledge, I would try not to simply hurl it back at the student by saying “what do you think”. Instead, I would think about how I would struggle to understand the concepts that the question seems to be addressing. Then I would rephrase it, or break it down into smaller chewable sizes, and ask them to ponder about it. Knowledge eventually gets transmitted to the receiver through critical thinking.

Graduating in a year’s time, the Student Council member has a game plan: to sponsor a scholarship: “It is my dream to give back to RP; to help students in need.” What was your impression of RP and why did you choose it?
Though RP is a very young polytechnic, it offers an interesting range of diplomas. While I may not be good at mathematics, I am prolific in English and in writing, which are essential for the course I’m taking. I am grateful for the opportunity to join RP. How different do you think your life would be, if you had not chosen RP?
If I had not gone to RP, I probably wouldn’t be able to experience what it is like to have dedicated facilitators, which is made possible by the low student to facilitator ratio. This means facilitators can give each student more attention and time to connect with them. I have led a full life here because there are just so many opportunities for me to show what I am capable of. If you could give prospective students one advice, what will it be?
It’s not just about the institution, but the individual’s efforts as well. Make your journey at RP count.

To me, RP is unique due to its Problem-Based Learning (PBL) system, and that attracted me to join the school. In addition, all of my facilitators were very knowledgeable and responsible.

How different do you think your life would be, if you had not chosen RP?
I would not have had the chance to reap the benefits of PBL and apply that effectively at work. The knowledge and skills I developed in RP have allowed me to make significant contributions at work. I too have developed deep bonds with my alma mater, the facilitators and mentors who taught me. As a school, RP offers the best study environment; as a company, it goes above and beyond to making sure its staff are taken care of. For example, RP provides training for continual skills upgrading and flexi-work arrangements to ensure we have work-life balance. If you could give prospective students one advice, what will it be?
Grasp every opportunity to absorb knowledge, to showcase your presentation skills in class.
Sporty with a love for the outdoors (she was in volleyball, rock-climbing and kayaking Interest Groups), Jasmine graduated in 2006 with a Diploma in Biomedical Sciences. She is back in RP to encourage secondary school students to make RP their choice school, like she had, more than nine years ago. What was your impression of RP and why did you choose it?
There was a bit of uncertainty because it was a new school then and though I was skeptical, I was excited to be in the pioneer batch. Under the guidance of dedicated facilitators, I quickly adapted to the PBL system and became confident of its relevance and application when I entered the workforce. Plus, back then all students, regardless of the school we were in, chances of meeting one another was frequent as there were only that many of us. We became close as we hung out at the one and only canteen in the then Tanglin campus during break times. How different do you think your life would be, if you had not chosen RP?
Through RP’s education, presentation skills is one aspect that is constantly being developed. That, and being able to work in teams no matter who is in your team, is an important skill that anyone will need for work. PBL has also transformed me into someone who is more independent. If you could give prospective students one advice, what will it be?
Strive hard and score well, whether academically or for your interest. Study hard and don’t forget to play hard too. In life, there has to be a balance in everything you do. Lastly, live life to the fullest and and don’t have any regrets.

Sheereen Loke’s graduation was doubly special as she was doing so alongside her father, Mikael Loke, who also graduated at the same time from RP as her. A determined person, Sheereen has already set her sights on a career in teaching, and will be furthering her studies in National Institute of Education this August. Why RP and why a course in outdoor and adventure learning? It was through my father that I chose RP as he told me about this course. As the love of the outdoors is in my blood, thanks to my dad, I knew I would enjoy this course. You have an impressive list of achievements. Which are you most proud of? When I got my first Roll of Honours in Academic Year 2010/2011 semester 1. I was really proud of what I thought was impossible at first. From then on, I started believing in myself more. Another achievement was when I choreographed a piece in a dance showcase called LEAPS, with industry veterans such as Zaini Tahir. I thought that it developed me more as a person. What was it like having your father as a peer in school? It brought us closer. I did get reactions from people like ‘Huh? Really? Is it weird?’ and we shared the same facilitators. But after awhile it felt pretty cool to know that you have a dad who wants to learn what you learn. We had a blast! Anyone you particularly aspire to be now? My parents. Having four children and providing us with a comfortable life is not easy these days. To me, that is respectable and that is why I aspire to be like them.
“I have been teaching Physical Education for 22 years. A colleague introduced RP to me and I was attracted to the Specialist Diploma in Outdoor and Adventure Learning course. The robust theoretical content and pedagogy, high practicum standards and how the facilitators demonstrated mastery in the subject impressed me so much that I encouraged my daughter to take it up as well.

Juggling studies and a full-time job for 10 months can be tough but it can’t surpass my love for the outdoor education. What’s not to love when you can play, get fit and earn a living from it all at once? My love for sports started way back and I even brought Sheereen to a camping trip when she was only nine months old! I would say she has achieved so much more than I when I was her age. Being in the same course as Sheereen was good as we often exchanged pointers; she would ask me things she’s unsure of and vice versa. I would say that it’s a good start for Singapore to have a specialisation in outdoor education as this. Overall, I am impressed by the standards that RP has delivered.”
Board of Governors Award recipient and Diethelm Keller Aviation Gold Medal Award winner, Syamil Siddiq graduated with an impressive GPA of 3.92 despite having gone through difficult times when his father was diagnosed with stroke in the midst of his final examinations. Syamil managed to pull through and credits his father for being his drive. Syamil is now waiting to pursue his degree in aviation in Nanyang Technological University in 2014 and aspires to work for Singapore Airlines or Dubai-based Emirates Airlines in future. How did you come to love aviation and flying? When I was a child, I used to make paper model planes but after a metre, they came crashing to the ground. Yet when I look up to the skies, I see airplanes flying effortlessly towards the clouds. Moments like these make me wonder and that’s what spurred my interest in aviation and inspired me to find out more. How much would you say RP has contributed to your current success? I am a firm believer of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) system and feel that the beauty of the system is that no student who wants to learn is left behind. I for one spent my time after lessons helping my own classmates to understand concepts. By teaching and helping my fellow course mates, I find that I learn a lot more as it also test my own understanding of the topics at hand.

I admire that tenacity to pursue dreams and not let failure bog us down,” says the 20-yearold who will be pursuing a Business Management degree at Singapore Management University. You are a success story in RP… Every school has a valedictorian. I do not have the highest GPA and I haven’t started earning for the family. Thus, I don’t see myself as successful yet. I can only pray that I’m on the road to success.

For Nurul Afifah, life is divided neatly into before and after 2009. That’s when the then-secondary two student first set foot in RP. She was representing Hua Yi Secondary School as a dancer for an annual hip-hop competition held at RP’s premise that year. “My first impression of RP was that it was unique and different from the other polytechnics. I couldn’t really pinpoint what exactly it was at the time but it sure felt like I was coming back home. The feeling was familiar. I felt like I could go to RP every day,” says Nurul Afifah, who was also a former Girl Guide for four years in Hua Yi. “As a Girl Guide, I had to bake cookies and sell them to raise funds for the elderly and children. That was how my love for baking started.”
Chasing a dream Only in the first months into her RP education, the Far East Organization Scholarship beneficiary is all praise of bond-free funding that the scholarship provides. “RP offers the course that I’ve always wanted to join. Through this course, I’ve gained relevant practical experience from the modules and work attachments. With the scholarship, I could pursue what I love, while at the same time, it would lessen the financial burden for my family.” says the Diploma in Restaurant and Culinary Operations student who has an undying dream to start her very own music cafe one day.

When she was barely in her teens, Keerthigha, now 17, set a big goal: to be a medical professional who can make a difference in people’s lives, one way or another. It was not a surprising decision considering she has had many influences from family members who were either already in the field or working towards it then.
All in the family “I remember that a bulk of family conversations revolved around my uncle, a radiologist consultant, who would throw medical terms around at will,” says the bubbly 17-year-old. “You’d think as a young girl, I would be put off by that kind of ‘high-level’ talk. On the contrary, I was intrigued and it got me all curious about the topic,” says Keerthigha. The student leader (she was a class representative in her secondary school for four years and has been recently selected as the RP’s 10th Student Council Sub-Committee Member) is well into her first year pursuing her goals and having her first year of education with RP, funded by Ngee Ann Kongsi Scholarship.
Setting her sights on the future “I already know what I want. Moreover, I would like to pursue further studies in this field. Monash University is reputable and comes highly recommended by family members, especially my mother,” she says. Keerthigha is thrilled that she gets to choose her specialisation in Year 2.
Winning the RP Freshmen Scholarship “Coupled with the fact that I have my education fully paid for by Ngee Ann Kongsi, I am more motivated to excel in my assignments and tests now to get better GPAs (at least 3.5). It has been a fulfilling journey so far because I feel privileged and rewarded for my strengths and results,” says Keerthigha, who was invited by RP to apply for the scholarship earlier this year. The youngest of three children, Keerthigha is also looking forward to the work attachment programme, which is part of her course with esteemed organisations such as Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) – in Year 3. “I did not face any difficulties when applying for the scholarship as I met all the requirements. As a technical agent in Starhub, Tan Guan Xiang has to interact with customers on a daily basis, helping them out of sticky situations with their handphones, network and Internet. So, not only is sound knowledge in the technicalities vital in his job, he also needs to master the art of fine customer service so they go home happy. Q: What are some of the key challenges you have faced so far in your line of work and industry?
As a front line and technical staff rolled into one, the challenge comes from having a firm grasp of IT knowledge and having the right EQ to handle demanding requests. And because technology (like 3G networks and electronic gadgets) is being upgraded on a daily basis, keeping up with it can be an uphill task if you’re not on the ball.
As I am working with the best team in entertainment whose skills and knowledge are phenomenal, keeping up with experienced colleagues was quite a challenge. But, the biggest hurdle was to keep up with technical considerations and issues that my production manager raised to the technical team during meetings and to supervise the stage and décor setup at Transformers the Ride launch at USS! Thankfully, I proved to be resilient under those working conditions.
Working life ca daunting for n be any fresh polytechnic g ra Two alumni p duate. rove that the superior RP they have rece education all the diffe ived made rence.
Q: How did you cope with these challenges then?
Although I was taken aback by the long working hours, I persevered in my work and I felt a huge sense of responsibility towards it. The one thing that my course has taught me is to love, breathe and sleep the work in order to thrive in this demanding industry. The Problem-Based Learning (PBL) system and daily class presentations have also given me the confidence to be eloquent and work closely with strangers. Q: What are some of the things you have learned in class that you have been actively applying at work?
I have encountered challenges in school while working with teammates on assignments. Through such experiences, I learnt to work with all levels of people in my line of work in a more professional manner!
Q: How did you cope with these challenges then?
RP taught me the basics of IT, the technical bits. Beyond these, the RP environment and teaching styles inculcated in me soft skills like project management and people management, which are very indispensable in my line of work. All in all, my course gave me both the hardware (knowledge) and “heart-ware” (people-handling skills) which made me a more competent and wellrounded employee. Q: What are some of the things you have learned in class that you have been actively applying at work?
Definitely PBL – one of the best tools I acquired throughout my education in RP. It’s an ingenious and logical system: it taught me critical thinking skills, and nurtured me to be more analytical in complex situations. These skills come in handy as I am able to apply them in my job.

A team of six Diploma in Business and Information Systems and Diploma in Interactive and Digital Media graduates came up with a computer application called OXYGEN that encourages teenagers to develop goals for themselves. The aim is to prepare them better for the future. The idea is this: The more the user can cope with “adversities” (tasks that come in the form of worksheets and assignments within the app), the higher is his or her “resilience quotient”. It is hoped that teens would apply what they learned through OXYGEN in difficult situations in life. The team has since reached out to teens in Assumption English and Assumption Pathway School through workshops.

The winning entry was Y-Craft, a corporate gifts company that sells customised corporate gifts, brainchild of Ang Zi Qun, Nah Joo Kiat, Joshua, Timothy Lee Kok Kiang, Trinh Linh Giang and Vincent Leonardo. What impressed the judges the most about their project is their ability to integrate digital ideas into the proposal, such as the use of Quick Response (QR) codes in the marketing of the gifts and linking consumers back to the Y-Craft’s website and online catalogue. The team showcased their business in an exhibition booth in City Walk Mall, located in Jakarta.
