Quick Tips

LOOKING GOOD

2. out of sight

1. best face forward For fresh looking skin, always moisturise before heading out. If you’re bothered by a couple of blemishes or zits, smooth a little BB cream over the affected areas for an even and radiant complexion!

No one needs to know if you’ve been pulling an allnighter. With your index finger, dot some concealer under the eyes and blend well. Remember to pick a suitable shade so you don’t sport the ridiculous reverse panda eyes!

Face wash: The best way to remove that grease on your skin is to make sure you cleanse your face twice daily. Deodorant: Ensure you smell good even though you’re working up a sweat at the gym.

3. mane attraction Keep your hair neat and tidy by applying a light-hold wax which can help tame frizz and flyaways. Add volume simply by scrunging hair near the roots.

On Aidil: Grey striped T-shirt, $32.90, Fabrick from Bape @ Play

Sprucing up for class need not be a tedious affair. Here’s how to look your best!

1. eye candy

2. get cheeky

Define brows by pencilling the colour closest to your hair colour, then line the upper lash line with a brown pencil. Apply a shimmery beige wash over the entire eyelid to brighten up those peepers; then roll the mascara wand to separate lashes and finish with two coats.

For a natural-looking flush, apply a peachy blush on the apples of cheek with a gentle hand. Blend up in a ‘C’ motion towards the hairline, then downwards to soften the colour. If you want to add a subtle glow, try a slightly shimmery blush and apply sparingly.

3. perfect pout Neutral lipsticks and clear lip glosses are great for the day! Stick to a watery formula and apply sparingly to avoid looking like you’ve just chowed down an oily meal!

4. crowning glory For something more interesting than a quick ponytail, gather your locks to a side and loosely plaid downwards. Leave about three inches from the hair ends and secure with rubber band. Add a cute detail by pinning the ends into the braid!

On Quinne: Beige chiffon dress, $39.90, Miss Emily

Leave-in hair treatment: Keep hair silky smooth with a light layer of conditioning treatment.

Face foundation: Choose a shade closest to your skin tone so your makeup looks natural.

Oil blotters: Glow is good but shine, not so. Keep your face matte with these mighty absorbers.

Roll-on perfume: For moments between lessons when you need to freshen up quick.

A Day in the Life

A Day In The Life Of A

Sonic ArtS STUDENT

We follow David Chew to find out what a Diploma in Sonic Arts student does during a typical day during Year 2 at the School of Technology for the Arts.

10:30am

my class starts at 12:30pm and since i’m early, i head to the library to practice on the piano that’s there for anyone to use.

i don’ t feel like walking to school today so i’m just going to take bus 911 from the bus stop just below my block.

i decide to grab lunch at rp’s south food court today because this is where i can find my favourite chicken chop with spaghetti dish at the popular western stall.

11:00am

to save time, i check my email and chat with my friends online while eating.

12:30pm - 1:30pm sound design’ class assignment briefing”

our teacher, mr sam yap, briefs us on the assignment of the day. this is an interesting one!

11:30am

Hmm... i wonder how i’m going to approach this assignment. it says that a photographer needs a soundscape (hmmm...soundscape?) to match an exhibition featuring her photos.

after some discussion with my group mates, we decide to record the sounds we need. We’re at the rp resource centre to loan out an audio recorder and some microphones for this task.

10

1:30pm - 2:30pm individual group discussion

i’m glad that sam is always there for us when we have difficulties with the equipment or need some direction when putting our presentation together!

sam sits with our group to help us with the ‘problem and any issues we have. we share our thoughts with him to see if we’re on the right track.

3:30pm - 4:15pm

group presentations

it’s my group’ s turn and i’ m excited to present our unique soundscape that we have been working on all afternoon!

4:15pm debrief

and review

once all the groups have presented their work, sam shares an alternative approach to the assignment, and concludes the class with a quick revision of what we have done today. He suggests further reading for us to review in our own time too!

i can ’ t let my group down so i need to pick the correct sounds to work with. i’ m now adjusting the modulation to the frequency i need for this section of the recording.

What’s Sound Design?

Do you dream of becoming Lady Gaga’s next music producer? Are you impressed by the cool sound effects in your favourite Xbox games? Have you ever wondered how sounds are recorded and produced in blockbuster movies like Harry Potter and Transformers? The answer is waiting for you in the Diploma in Sonic Arts! This is the perfect place for you to hone your craft using cutting edge, industry standard audio equipment and software. In Sound Design lessons, you will have loads of fun recording sounds, mixing music, designing sounds for games and more. Make your sonic dreams a reality today!

WHAT ’S

after class, i meet some friends at the library to help them with their music theory assignment and then i’m done for the day!

LEARNIN PROBLEM - BASED

G (PBL)?

RP adopts the “One-Day-One-Problem” teaching approach, which is a unique adaptation of PBL. Under the guidance of the facilitators, students identify learning issues related to the problem, gather information, and study the associated resources to come up with a solution for the problem. The students have to think in original ways to come up with the solutions to these real world problems. This helps them with their creative thinking skills by showing that there are many ways to solve a problem. Students learn to work together in teams and take responsibility when they are asked to make choices. The opportunity to make choices and to express their learning in their own voices also helps the students to take ownership of the problems, hence spurring their motivation to solve the problem at the end of the day.

PBL WORKSHOPS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS RP regularly conducts hands-on workshops for secondary school students to demonstrate the learning process at RP. Led by RP’s own student facilitators, the two-hour plus workshops are usually held at RP campus and are free for the students. To find out more, visit www.rp.sg/learningjourney

Classes that are four hours long like this one, incorporate reading and assignments which students are expected to do in their own time. Other classes at RP are spread out over the entire day, which allows students to read resources before the class ends.

The workshop was interesting and educational. Using PBL as triggers for learning gives students the opportunity to solve problems through their own ability to diagnose and research the issues. RP’s environment is also very conducive for learning. The campus is wireless and the students can use their notebooks anywhere they go.

- Fong Zheng Yu,

former Secondary 4 student at Christ Church Secondary School who attended a PBL workshop in 2010

PBL is very different from the traditional method of education that spoon-feeds students information from textbooks. Instead, PBL teaches students to learn independently as they need to do their own research and work together with a team to produce a quality presentation each day. No doubt, students have to adjust to the new environment and system when they come to RP, but that is just a shortterm impact. Because PBL will transform someone who is very shy and afraid to speak up in front of people into a confident speaker who is a strong team player and with good presentation skills.

- Anthony Ng,

former chairman of the X-Synthesis Club, which comprises student facilitators for the PBL workshops

Savour a 3-course gourmet meal at just $10 nett at RP’s very own Oliva restaurant! Three student writers from Centre for Culture and Communication (CCC) review the value-for-money set lunch. By Harendhren s/o Vinukopal, Eliza Hamizah and Nur Fadzleen Niza Binte Mohd Arriffin

L

ocated at E1, Oliva is a hidden gem tucked away on the 10th floor. The fine dining restaurant is a $2 million training facility operated by the students from School of Hospitality. It offers an affordable fine dining experience for RP students and staff, as well as the public. As we walked into Oliva, we were awed by the restaurant’s elegant and sophisticated ambience. We were ushered to a private dining room normally reserved for VIP guests and were soon served the first of the delicious 3-course gourmet meal. The Waldorf Salad appetiser had a great mixture of texture and taste. The zesty green apple and walnuts gave the starter a good crunchy feel with a slight tinge of sourness. The raisins added a juicy sweetness and the citrusy flavour of the apricot further stimulated the taste buds. The combination was just right. The overall dish looked appetising too, with its mix of colours accentuated by purple leaves and the yellow sauce. The main course this week was Roasted Chicken with Rosemary Jus, which came with a side of Lyonnaise potatoes, snow peas and shiitake mushrooms. There was also a halved tomato topped with a cheese gratin that added a burst of colour to the dish. The chicken was well cooked but tender; its slightly crispy skin added a bit of crunch while the potatoes were nicely flavoured and not too salty. The portion, however, is more suitable for small eaters. What we liked best about this dish was the sauce that added a subtle flavour yet really served to enhance the meal. But we wished that there were more of the sauce and rosemary jus to accompany the roasted chicken. What better way to end a perfect meal than with a satisfying dessert? Finely plated with a lovely touch of coffee bean-shaped chocolate, raspberry and biscotti sitting atop, you are definitely in for a treat with Oliva’s tantalising Tiramisu. Meaning “pick-me-up” in Italian, Tiramisu is great if you need to be perked up after an exhausting day. A good blend of espresso and cocoa, the combination of flavours worked in unison, making this a Tiramisu experience to remember. With its exquisite flavours and inviting, smooth velvety texture, every mouthful was a surprise. There was perfect chemistry between all the elements – the sponge cake was soaked in coffee just right while the sweetness of the Tiramisu and the hint of sourness from the raspberry made us want to come back for more. All in all, Oliva literally offers a fine dining experience that’s not to be missed!

Kitchen Culture Want to join the F&B industry? Here’s some advice from the culinary coaches and service team behind Oliva! RP School of Hospitality is supported by a strong team of former industry professionals who have worked in some of the hottest food & beverage establishments in town. We chat with the Chef Instructors and Service Captain responsible for ensuring the food and service at Oliva is always top-notch.

Our Best Advice to Aspiring F&B Stars… Be passionate about food and the industry! And be patient as well. You also have to be physically fit in order to stay in the kitchen for long periods. The most important thing is that you need to be able to work with people well, whether you like them or not because you’ll have to work with them for 10 to 12 hours a day sometimes. - Chef Instructor Soon Yes, you will have to sacrifice most of your time. You’ll have to work on weekends, public holidays, and even on your girlfriend’s or boyfriend’s birthday! - Chef Instructor Loh

Fast Facts Menu: Conceptualised by Chef Instructor Horst Futterer and his team of ex-industry professional chefs, Oliva’s menu comprises Asian and Western fare with a contemporary flair. Menu changes weekly. Seating capacity: 80 pax Operating hours: Mondays to Fridays – 11:30am to 2:30pm (Closed during school vacations, test and examination periods) Reservations: Advance booking is strongly encouraged. Call 6364 7566.

When you first start out, it’s important to understand that the basic pay is very low. Many join the F&B industry but quit after the first few months due to the low starting pay. But with determination and as you gain experience over the years, you will eventually be recognised and be given opportunities. Perseverance pays off in this industry. - Chef Instructor Chua Be willing to take the hardship (of the long hours and nature of the job). And be humble because humility is something that will ultimately bring you success. - Chef Instructor Lam In this industry, you must be a people-person. You must love people. If you have a natural affinity for serving people, this will be a great industry for you. It offers great exposure and it’s a great learning opportunity to get to know different cultures because you meet a lot of people. You also have to learn to deal with different people everyday because in a single day, you can meet up to 100 people from customers to colleagues. - Service Instructor Tye

RP TRANSFORMED In just three years, two good friends evolve into fine young men with strong characters and valuable leadership skills thanks to RP.

S

hawn Kong and Edwin Pang are testaments to RP’s ethos of providing its students with a wealth of opportunities to discover themselves, transform their characters, and achieve their goals. Close friends since the first semester of Year 2, the duo has since graduated from RP this year, each with a Diploma in Hotel and Hospitality Management (Shawn is a Diploma Award winner) and fond memories to last a lifetime. The pair has taken part in numerous events organised by their School of Hospitality (SOH) including the Meet-theParents-Session and Student Life Activities Fiesta. But the one unforgettable experience they pride themselves on is having motivated each other to perform better academically. When they first met being in the same class in Year 2, Shawn’s results were topping their cohort whereas Edwin was just an average student with unsatisfactory grades. However, Shawn soon motivated Edwin to constantly study and focus well in class. Coupled with Edwin’s determination, the duo managed to rise to the top while their leadership qualities and exemplary behaviours and attitudes also made them shine brighter than the rest of their cohort. This led to them being handpicked as Student Ambassadors for SOH. In this role, Shawn and Edwin were given even more opportunities to further hone their critical thinking skills and troubleshoot quickly when their wits were challenged at events they helped organise, such as the Industry Partners’ Night.

Our Lives!

es All the k a M r o t a it Facil

DIFFERENCE

Indeed, Shawn and Edwin’s RP journey would not have been as enriching without Mr Rick Low, Edwin’s facilitator for the Hospitality Informative Systems module. Besides ensuring Edwin’s understanding of the academic concepts, Mr Low’s classes were always filled with laughter as his students enjoyed hearing about the real-life incidents that happened during his past jobs working in various hotels. Says Edwin: “I’m thankful to Mr Low and the rest of the SOH facilitators for giving me so many opportunities to develop myself as an individual and improve my skills too!” “An average teacher would just care about which students are assigned to him/her, but a truly genuine educator would care about your holistic well-being,” Shawn muses about Mr Low, who was neither his facilitator nor mentor. It was precisely because of the absence of obligation that Shawn really appreciates the initiative that Mr Low showed in his personal development. Shawn adds, “Mr Low is very openminded and easy to talk to. He is also willing to share all of his life experiences to make sure that we make the best out of every situation we are in. He is more than willing to stay back in school after a long day to listen to our problems and offer his views.” The encouraging environment that surrounded Edwin and Shawn as they progressed and evolved at RP has certainly matured them into fine young men; not just in an academic capacity but as allrounders with strong values and essential leadership skills that will serve them well in the future.

An average teacher would just care about which students are assigned to him/her, but a truly genuine educator would care about your holistic well-being. – Shawn Kong

Both Shawn and Edwin have evolved over the years and they have set themselves up to help others. I often see them talking to their juniors to encourage them. – Mr Rick Low

Rp...

Need some advice for better peace of mind during your learning journey at RP? Our counsellors and other experts answer your most pressing problems! I’m not sure if RP is the right polytechnic for me. I know the Shy teaching method uses ProblemBased Learning (PBL) and I would Girl have to work in groups and make presentations in class everyday. But I’m shy and feel awkward around other people. I’m also worried I’ll get stage fright. How can I overcome this fear? You are not alone in this. The #1 fear for a lot of people is actually public speaking. I believe your fear is very real, and sometimes it may seem to paralyse you. Many people go through these scary moments and have come out on top. It is normal to feel this way. And more importantly, it can be managed. You can overcome this situation by preparing yourself psychologically and mentally, being well-prepared for the task at hand, constant practice, and using your imagination to your benefit. With regard to working in groups, the truth is that you will need to work in groups and teams wherever you go. RP provides the best opportunity and environment for an individual to develop skill sets needed for survival in the outside world. While you are here, you might as well make the best of it. Knowing our strengths and weaknesses and accepting our individual uniqueness would allow us to be more tolerant of one another and help us achieve our goals together.

I come from a poor family and am currently studying at RP. Because of my family’s financial Determined challenges, I have been working part-time since I was 12 to pay my school fees. I really hope to continue studying at RP, however my pay is so low that it barely covers my school fees. Is there any way I can get some help? We can sense your resilience in managing the situation at home and are very proud of you. It’s never easy juggling a job and school, especially when carrying the responsibility of the family on your shoulders. RP will do its best to support you even if it means working together with other agencies to manage your situation. You can contact the Student Services Centre or email help-student@ rp.sg. If your results are good, you should explore the various scholarships and bursaries available at RP. Additionally, RP offers several financial assistance schemes so that students would be able to complete their studies without much worry. Please speak with your facilitator on how you could learn more about what is available. You can also visit www.rp.sg/admissions/admissions_info/fees/ financial_assistance.asp for more information.

I just joined RP after dropping out of my first year at a Junior College. The system of learning here is very different and I’m worried that I won’t be able to adjust to this new environment. Any advice?

Worried

I can see you have a never-give-up attitude, which is very helpful in RP where the emphasis is on PBL. You need to take time to get used to this new environment and find your way around in this system. You may also need to familiarise yourself with all the assistance available in this school and make full use of them to your advantage. PBL is an approach that challenges students to learn by engaging in a real problem. This style simultaneously develops both problem-solving strategies and disciplinary knowledge bases and skills by placing students in the active role of problem-solvers who are confronted with the type of problems they are likely to face in their future workplace. To get the most out of your RP journey, you need to be open to experiences and experiential learning, and be mentally prepared to learn from a problem-solving approach instead of a more instructive approach. Also, be daring to ask questions and voice your opinions and seek help when needed.

I really like this guy in my class. We’ve been hanging out and he asked me to be his girlfriend but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea because we are classmates and hang out with the same group of friends. What if it doesn’t work out and things become awkward between us and for our friends? I’m also afraid that it might distract me in class and my schoolwork will suffer. Help!

Distracted

You have good insight and awareness into yourself and what you want to achieve. I would share the same concern about your school work being affected and eventually, it may distract you from your main goal here, which is to complete your studies. In any relationship, it is both a little risky yet exciting – there is no guarantee as to what may eventually happen, but thinking ahead and learning to manage things as they come will help us find a balance. Feelings and emotions are extremely powerful in that it governs how we feel and how we react to situations. My suggestion is to not make any decision while we are high on emotions. If you feel that you are not ready and unsure, and yet you feel very much for this guy, wait a while before making a decision. I am sure your potential boyfriend would respect that.

I’m a Year 1 RP student and after a few weeks of classes, I think this may not be the course for me as I can’t seem to keep up with what is taught! Although this course was one of my top choices, it’s a lot harder than what I had imagined! Should I drop out now and enrol in a private institution instead?

On the Fence

I empathise with you on how difficult it must have been for you. Transitioning from secondary education and then adjusting to the new problem-based learning environment at RP will take time. Give yourself some more time and make plans to help yourself cope better. Form a study group with your peers, exchange study pointers or even approach your facilitator/mentor to help you to understand the subject better. When there is community support around you, you will find it easier to do better in the course you are currently in. Once you are able to do that, you will realise that dropping out from the course is not a wise choice. There are many exciting opportunities for you to grow in your three years at RP. Seize them well and enjoy the exciting learning journey ahead of you.

I plan to further my studies in a local university after polytechnic. Do I need to be a merit award student in order to be accepted by the local universities?

Goal Getter

Under the admission criteria for National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, applicants will be admitted based on their polytechnic and GCE O-Level results. The weightage is 80% on polytechnic results and 20% on GCE O-Level results. A merit award student will stand a higher chance to be accepted by the local universities. However, a non-merit award student may also be admitted to the local universities with good polytechnic results. It is therefore very important to give your best for your studies. If you know that your next goal is to pursue higher education in a local university, stay focused. Aim high – if you don’t get the stars, at least you still hit the sky.

WHY RP

Rp IS MY FIRST CHOICE

Final year RP student Ashwin s/o Rajenthiran and aspiring RP student Valarie Yeo from Serangoon Garden Secondary School share why RP topped their list of school choices.

A final year School of Engineering student, Ashwin s/o Rajenthiran began his RP journey three years ago in order to fulfill his dream of having a career in the aviation industry. He will soon complete his Diploma in Civil Aviation and merge his passion with the technical skills he acquired at RP when he joins the workforce after graduation. A jovial and sociable guy, Ashwin enjoys sports like soccer, cycling, badminton, and windsurfing. I chose RP because… it offers the course that I want in order to pursue my passion of working in the aviation industry. In addition, the travelling time from my home to RP is short and therefore convenient for me. Also, the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method of learning at RP is different from other polytechnics. My RP journey so far has been… a very fresh experience. Understanding new concepts and new ways of learning each day is wonderful. I have also made many new friends and met many influential facilitators who have been a great help to me in my studies and in achieving good grades. These are the people I will cherish for a long time. I actually look forward to going to school – that’s how much I like RP life! At RP, I hope to… learn more and be an all-rounded person and graduate with a respectable Grade Point Average.

Secondary 4 student Valarie Yeo has her heart set on RP after she completes her O-Level exams at Serangoon Garden Secondary School at the end of the year. A sporty and outdoorsy girl, Valarie is actively involved in several co-curricular activities (CCAs) like National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) and inter-house competitions such as soccer and cross-country running. With a bevy of other interests including street soccer, basketball, bowling, swimming, cycling, balloon twisting and magic, Valarie has picked the perfect polytechnic because RP offers over 100 Interest Groups (IGs) for her to choose from! I am choosing RP because… the learning style suits me. I like to participate in group discussions and RP focuses a lot on group work using the PBL approach, which really appeals to me. I also love the open and green environment at RP. The course I plan to do at RP is… Diploma in Restaurant and Culinary Operations. Although they have a similar course at other polytechnics, I am choosing RP because of RP’s new training facilities. I really want to join RP because… I find the Student Life Activities (SLA) very interesting and I like that I can set up new IGs too. I am currently interested in the Kayaking IG and the Outdoor Adventure IG. RP’s PBL approach is also a plus point that attracts me.

Describing his RP journey as “adventurous”, Faruq is grateful to RP for transforming him from a “shy and quiet guy at the end of the classroom” to a more sociable and confident individual. He is currently working as a freelance programmer specialising in mobile applications for iPhone and Android operating systems before he enlists to serve the nation.

RP taught me the importance of…

responsibility and self-learning. At RP, teamwork in classrooms is vital. Having to deal with difficult teammates sometimes, I’ve learnt that I may not be able to count on everyone so it’s important to rely on myself. We also can’t depend on others to spoon-feed us with knowledge. And we must deliver what we promise. RP has also sharpened my communication and presentation skills through the daily presentations we had to do. If it weren’t for RP, I still wouldn’t be able to stand in front of a group of strangers to present my work.

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) comes to my rescue when…

I’m working on programming because it’s like doing math assessments backwards – multiple solutions are available but there’s no definite answer! I usually end up at a junction not knowing which path leads to the better solution. But PBL has taught me to analyse a problem thoroughly before breaking it down and then learning more about it in order to arrive at a solution. I often thank the PBL methodology for helping me get past many “road blocks”.

While waiting to begin her degree programme at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in August 2011, Yeo Xin Ying is working as a part-time tutor for secondary school students teaching them biology, chemistry, physics, and math. She also helps to organise and volunteer for sports events such as the Great Eastern Women 10K run. She credits the daily presentations she has had to do for three years at RP for training her to be a good team player and communicator. “I’ve also learnt to make very objective decisions with limited time, manage my time well, and stay focused to meet the deadlines,” she says.

RP has instilled in me the values of… adaptability and consistency. Having to change classes every semester enabled me to meet a lot of new people with different characters and working styles. This has taught me to adapt and find the best way to complete the task at hand whilst working with such different individuals. The daily grading system in RP also encouraged me to be much more consistent in my work as every grade counts towards my overall Grade Point Average (GPA). From being punctual, participating in class and ensuring quality of work to the presentations and reflection journals, all of them have to be done well to score the best grade for the day, every day.

One of the most important skills that I’ve honed at RP is… creativity. It is the key to keeping things interesting, and is required in order to find better solutions for the world. PBL has engaged my mind to find creative, feasible solutions to solve daily problems.

Awards Roll Call: Grade Point Average: 3.92 • Board of Governors Award • Diploma Award • Diploma with Merit

PBL came to my rescue when… my final year team entered the Lee Kuan Yew SMU Global Business Challenge and we were required to come up with a feasible and profitable business idea. Initially, we were at a loss as to which direction we should head towards. However, thanks to PBL, I thought about what my team and I already knew and what we were best at, and came up with a business idea that promotes inclusiveness and interaction between disabled and able-bodied children. We emerged as the only Singapore Finalist team representing RP, which was a great accomplishment and networking opportunity for us.

Malaysian student Lee Cheng Shu’s commitment to her Lee Che studies is truly remarkable. Despite having to travel all the Diplomang Shu way from Johor Bahru to RP for class each day, she managed Science in Materials to achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA. Thanks to RP, Cheng Shu says School Graduate 20 11 that she is now more confident in voicing out her opinions, Scienceof Applied compared to before joining RP when she was scared to even request for something from an unfamiliar acquaintance. Indeed, Cheng Shu is grateful to RP for her newfound independence, self-motivation, and clearer focus. She will be heading directly into the second year of a Degree in Materials Science at NTU soon.

PBL comes in handy when… I have to troubleshoot a problem that has cropped up, and also when completing tasks that I have never handled before – by conducting research online or making use of the other resources given to us.

Some of the most valuable skills I have picked up at RP include… communication, interpersonal, presentation, and research skills. Having presented almost 400 times while in RP, I was also required to communicate well with my peers and conduct research in order to get to the solution of the daily “problems”. I believe good communication skills will prepare me well for the working world. Research skills are also definitely important as self-research can be done to troubleshoot whatever problems might occur in the working world, as well as encourage me to be an independent worker. Good presentation skills are certainly a plus point as we would be required to present our strategies or findings to our bosses and clients in the future.

L H S Huang Weilun Diploma in Sports and Exercise Sciences Year: 3 Interned with: Singapore Sports Council (SSC) Internship duration: 16 weeks

Interning at SSC was fun and enjoyable. I had a mentor who guided me especially when tasked with larger job duties such as working on events. On certain days of the week, staff from different departments are encouraged to play sports together in order to get to know each other better. This was very effective in helping me improve my teamwork and social skills, which are important in the working world. Besides increasing my knowledge about sports science, I also gained better connections with people in the sports industry. An asset to the Sports Coaching department, Weilun took on responsibilities and tasks readily, beyond the requirements of his duties as an intern. He exhibited initiative, reliability, maturity, and has a positive learning attitude. He was also able to handle customers well.

T I S Che Yan Ru Diploma in Information Technology Year: 3 Interned with: SIM University Internship duration: 6 weeks I was tasked with helping SIM move “ their data from hardware learning resources to e-resources, and developing three Windows phone applications for SIM: Short-Term Memory, Long-Term Memory and Automatic Processing. The Windows Phone 7 application is a very new mobile platform that I was not trained in. So I had to explore on my own in order to create the applications. This was the most challenging part of my internship but I managed to create them by applying RP’s Problem-Based Learning method. SIM was very happy with the result. The experience definitely made me more independent and I also learnt how to communicate with the client in order to understand their needs.

This experience has set a high “ benchmark for other interns and institutions, given Yan Ru’s ability to work independently, use creative thinking, and deliver quality results on time. We see RP’s education culture of wanting students to source for their own knowledge being applied effectively in actual work performance.
