Upon reaching the Adventure Learning Centre, I quickly put on my gear and prepare all the basic items I need for the lesson.

I enjoy walking to school in the morning! It gets me psyched up, especially when I have lessons outdoors, like today!

1) ... checked! 2) ... checked! 3) ... checked! ...

This week, our problem statement requires us to explore and come up with different rescue procedures for both the victim and rescuer. Our facilitator, Mr Sabri goes through in detail what we have to do before we head up to the three-tier challenge course. Here, my classmate and I are checking that we’ve got everything we need.

Time to be the rescuer number 1! I feel like superman!

I first start by ensuring all my ropes are not tangled, that my belay is properly set, and my carabineers are locked.

We head back to our classroom at the library where Mr Sabri goes through our worksheets with us and the 6th Presentation (6P) – which offers the suggested solution for today’s problem .

Once our practice is over, Mr Sabri and Mr Adrian demonstrate to us what a one-man rescue operation would be like. Super cool!

1 00pm 2 00pm

Lunchtime! My friends and I chill out at W6 E-canteen as the chicken chop is affordable and simply delicious!

It’s been such a fun-filled day! I’m now heading home to finish my Reflection Journal! See ya!

Can never get bored doing this!

After lunch, we return to the Adventure Learning Centre to have our Understanding Test revision. There, we practise the rigging of releasable abseil and belay system, the dispatch of participant for abseil, ascending the vertical rope, and the changeover to descending.

Next up, we move to the next challenge course where I play the victim.

An outdoor and sports enthusiast, Muhammad Haikal B Abdul Samad is active in the Silat and Hockey CCAs. Grateful for all the things RP has provided him with, the Year 2 student says, “RP is an institution which provides a lot of opportunities for its students to excel and discover new things. In fact, I went on two different overseas trips in Malaysia back in Year 1 and am currently preparing for an expedition trip to Australia this September.”

Relatively new to RP, Mr Muhammed Sabri Mahmod was previously a physical education teacher since 2002. A firm believer in experiential learning, Mr Sabri used to manage the challenge course facilities in Hougang Primary School. Additionally, the outdoor lover also provided certification programmes and training for colleagues who were keen in outdoor adventure education.

As an Outdoor and Adventure Learning student, Haikal goes through a lot of outdoor lessons and hands-on practical modules. He adds, “The adventurous and fun experiences along with the process of learning in this diploma have transformed me into an independent learner.”

Ab0ut Challenge C0urse Management The Challenge Course Management module familiarises students with a wide range of high and low elements while they learn about basic maintenance tasks, inspection procedures, risk management, and rescue techniques relating to challenge rope courses. Students will also learn about design and management of a challenge course programme and be involved in many hands-on activities and out-of-classroom lessons. The curriculum also covers industry standards from the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT), Singapore National Climbing Standards (SNCS), and Abseiling Proficiency Competency (APC) Level 2.

DISC0VER

When asked what he likes best about the PBL system, Mr Sabri says, “Getting my students to respond to my critical questions during or after each activity and also reading their Reflection Journal - it is a good avenue for me to understand my students better.” He also shares that the PBL system provides RP students with a platform to articulate their thoughts and also to be confident when speaking in front of an audience.

What,s BL? RP offers a holistic educational experience through various innovative teaching approaches, leveraging the fundamentals of Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Guided by experienced facilitators, students work in teams to solve problems and present viable solutions to their peers. This way, problem-solving skills and teamwork are developed on a daily basis through small-group collaboration. Such PBL sessions provide immense value to our students as we prepare them to take on the challenges they will face in the real working world.

BL W0rksh0ps f0r sec0ndary sch00l students Led by RP’s own student facilitators, the workshop lasts for about two hours and is held on RP campus. It is open to all secondary school students to experience RP’s unique learning process. The exciting workshop is absolutely free, so come and experience RP today! n animal lover since young, it was only natural for Vivian Koh to apply for an internship with the Wildlife Reserves Singapore. Attached to the Marketing (Promotions & Advertising) team in the Singapore Zoo for four months, Vivian was heavily involved in the marketing efforts for the newly opened River Safari. She was even offered a part-time position at the end of her internship.

Tell us more about your job scope! My job involved liaising with business partners such as design agencies, executing BTL (below the line) collaterals such as posters and brochures, assisting with projects that included photography shoots, TVC (television commercials) recces and creative presentations. What were the highlights of your internship? One of the highlights of my internship was definitely working on Singapore’s latest wildlife freshwater park - River Safari. The other highlight was when I was given the chance to assist in producing collaterals for the official opening of the Giant Panda Forest - which features giant pandas Jia Jia and Kai Kai! Were you able to apply the knowledge and skills from RP during your internship? Definitely. For one of my job assignments, I had to do up a creative brief for a vendor. As I’d taken the Campaign and Advertisement Design module in RP previously, I knew how to write a creative brief which made the task easier for me. Tell us more about what you did! I had to compile information on Singapore’s biodiversity and upload them on the Biodiversity and Environment Database System (BIOME) website, where members of the public can access the information for their own knowledge or projects.

P

assionate about all things nature, Isabelle Lee worked with the National Parks Board for her internship. There, she got to learn more about the projects that were being done in the National Biodiversity Centre and even contributed to some of them.

What were the highlights of your internship? The highlight of my internship was being able to learn beyond what I was taught in RP. For example, I learnt how decisionmakers craft policies on protecting offshore islands. I learnt a lot from my colleagues when I joined them for field trips. Were you able to apply the knowledge and skills from RP during your internship? Yes. RP teaches students to become independent learners. For example, when writing policies, I did all the necessary research on my own and thought of ways to bring across the point of protecting the offshore islands without having to constantly seek advice from supervisors.

Tell us more about your overseas experience! My job scope involved taking calls from guests all over the world, assisting them with room reservations at the various Shangri-La hotels and answering any queries that they might have. At times, I also handled emails regarding reservations or general inquiries. What were the highlights of your internship? I got to experience the daily working life in a customer contact centre and I was also given the training that other full-time employees in the company receive. Work was also very interesting because I had the chance to be on the phone with people from different countries and cultures. Were you able to apply the knowledge and skills from RP during your internship? Yes! In RP, I took a module that specialises in contact centre operations and through that, I learnt many things such as dealing with difficult guests and the difference between a hard (physical) phone and a soft phone (programmed into a PC). We also had a tour of a local contact centre so I was able to take a look and prepare for the attachment with Shangri-La.

Water Polo

Despite being a relatively new CCA, the twoyear-old Water Polo team has been successful and popular with students. For those who aren’t so sure what water polo is all about, it’s best described as a teambased water sport combining aspects of swimming, football, basketball, ice hockey, rugby, and wrestling. If you’re up for challenges, this CCA is for you.

LEADERSHIP & SERVICE LEARNING

CULTURE & AESTHETICS Drama.Republic In this club, aspiring actors get to learn everything from choreography to the technical aspects of stage performance. Under the current tutelage of Ms Gloria Tan, the group has tackled challenging plays like Lanterns Never Go Out and Off-Centre by established playwright Haresh Sharma. Additionally, the members don many hats in their productions, including working as student directors, producers, stage managers, playwrights, cast, and crew.

Student Ambassadors

No genre is too difficult for the wind band, whose repertoire ranges from classical works to jazz, pop, and even contemporary compositions. For students in the CCA, there are many opportunities to get their music heard with regular performances both inside and outside of RP, and two signature concerts a year – the Viva La Symphonie and Symphonie de République. Members have also travelled to Taiwan and Hong Kong for overseas exchanges to make new friends who are equally passionate about wind band music. The 10-year-old group is also very proud to have participated in the Chiayi City Band Festival and the Singapore International Band Festival, where they received several top awards.

Guitar Ensemble

To say that Guitar Ensemble (GEnRe) has come a long way would be an understatement. Managed under the artistic guidance of Mr Alex Lee, GEnRe brings together talents across all disciplines from RP that culminate in biannual showcases featuring tunes ranging from classical music to pop. Some of the significant events they have performed at include RP’s Open House, Woodlands Regional Library’s 10th Anniversary Celebrations, and the 2011 International Symposium on Advances in Technology Education.

The Student Ambassadors (SA) grooms students to be outstanding representatives of RP through various community, national, and international events! Over the years, SA group has served as a channel for members to be empowered, exchange knowledge, and take part in many exciting ventures like the outreach programmes to various secondary schools, Chingay Parade, National Day Observance, and RP’s Open House. The group also organises training workshops to equip students with skills including proposal writing, public speaking, personal grooming, and social etiquette.

The Big Break

Scoring that PFP Scholarship was just what Ahmad Irfan Bin Moktar needed to make him realise his true potential. He says, “Achieving that scholarship has definitely changed my life because I’ve realised that anything is possible. The PFP Scholarship helps to cover my school fees for a year and it’s a good thing to learn for free!” With the aim of pursuing his dream course in mind, Irfan shares that there was no reason not to sign up for the PFP. “Since I was given the chance to skip the O-Levels and prepare for polytechnic education earlier, I thought to myself, ‘Why not?’” The Outdoor and Adventure Learning student further adds that the PFP is an excellent programme for secondary school students as it gave him a head start in his polytechnic journey. “This programme has taught me the ways to overcome problems mentally, physically, and emotionally, as well as how to lead a healthy lifestyle. It also taught me the elements of the working world,” he expresses. When asked what he likes best about RP, Irfan says, “I like how the school uses the Problem-Based Learning method as it equips students with skills they need for the future. Not only that, RP has amazing CCAs too!”

One Step Ahead

According to Nicholas Chong Xun Xian, the PFP is considered an attractive programme as it gave him the golden opportunity to bypass the typical Secondary 5 route and experience the dynamic polytechnic life directly. The Aerospace Avionics student is a fan of the new learning environment he is exposed to. “RP’s teaching method is flexible and different, and that enables us to learn better.”

J0lene S0h Yen Fang Diploma in Biotechnology School of Applied Science Swiss Cottage Secondary School Alumna

Proud to be a part of the pioneer batch of PFP students here in RP, Nicholas adds, “There are a lot of perks to being one of the pioneer PFP students. One of it is how we have the opportunity to learn so many different things through various unique and interesting ways.”

The Right Choice

Choosing RP through the PFP has proven to be a good decision made by biotechnology student Jolene Soh Yen Fang. She explained, “The lessons are more hands-on. The facilitators are really caring and they make sure that lessons are taught properly and the students have learnt well.” Jolene is also a recipient of the PFP Scholarship and credits it for motivating her to excel even further. “The scholarship is a reward which encourages me to work even harder. It also proves that I can excel in my studies, even though I was from the Normal (Academic) stream.” Thanking her secondary school for inculcating a ‘dare to try’ mentality in her, Jolene says that being a part of the pioneer batch feels great as she’s able to try something new and live to tell the story.

THE ASPIRING HUMANITARIAN

Stephanie Vict0ria Tay Ch00 Gek

Currently an undergraduate student in Nanyang Technological University wishing to do her part for humanity, Stephanie describes her three-year stint in RP as nothing but awesome.

Diploma in Biotechnology

Having joined RP after pursuing a higher NITEC course in ITE, the A*STAR Undergraduate Scholarship recipient mentions how RP has helped her grow in every way. “RP doesn’t just focus on the academics of students, but also grooms students holistically by seeking out their interests and strengths.”

School of Applied Science

2012 Graduate

My dream of helping humanity… came about when I was taking

the microbiology module in Year 2. I learnt about bioremediation and this actually gave me the idea of using microbes in green technology such as treating sewage water. In future, I’ll be able to use my knowledge to create a breakthrough that will have a positive impact on society.

I have benefitted from learning through the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) system as… it taught me to learn independently and

work on my presentation skills, which I believe I’ve become good at after three years here.

I’ve learned in RP to… never be complacent, stay humble, and help others whenever we are able to.

THE GO-GETTER

Timothy joined RP with an aim in mind – to prove to himself that he could do it. Coming from a family that could not afford his polytechnic education fees, the Information Technology graduate went above and beyond to fund his own studies and is grateful for all the help RP has given him.

Tim0thy Lee K0k Kiang Diploma in Information Technology

School of Infocomm

“RP helped me by offering financial loans and bursaries for students in need. Truth be told, it relieved my financial burden. Thanks to the bursary, I was able to juggle my work and studies much better.”

2013 Graduate

Today, Timothy holds the position of a Web Developer and is glad to have been an RP student. “I do not regret entering RP because I’ve had the best time here.”

My experience as an RP student… was just like a box of

crayons – filled with many colours which made it fun and memorable. l loved the campus life! I looked forward to having new classmates every semester and we had a lot of fun.

Other secondary school students join RP because… we

are unique! Presentations are what we do best in RP. After three years, even the shyest would transform into confident and outspoken speakers.

I’ve learned in RP to… be resourceful, be proactive, and to manage my time efficiently.

2009 Graduate

THE SHOWBIZ ACE

If Tosh seems familiar to you, that’s because he played Sergeant Ong in the successful Ah Boys to Men film! Sharing with us that RP was one of his top polytechnic choices when it came to decision time, he further adds, “My experience in RP was really fun, very hands-on and one of the most memorable times of my life.”

The former new media student believes that he is an accidental actor and credits RP for giving him the space to be himself. “I never thought I would become an actor because back in RP, I studied film and did more of the behind-the-scene stuff. My goal was actually to become a director, so this is all unexpected.”

I am able to apply what I’ve picked up in RP to my career as… all the presentations really helped me with public

speaking and knowing how to talk to clients. I did videography for a while and covered a lot of fashion events, weddings and even Men’s Fashion Week – so all that I’ve learnt has helped tremendously.

Other secondary school students join RP because…

the way of learning is different. It is not purely ‘mugging’ all the way. Some people perform better when they work on projects that are more hands-on. The school isn’t just about studying, there are always events going on and overall, it is one fun school.

I’ve learned in RP to… present and speak confidently in

public, adapt to different kinds of people, work hard, and play hard!

THE RECORD-BREAKER What sets Claudia apart from the rest? The recent graduate made history when she became the first RP student to clinch a spot at the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine!

Surprised at this achievement, Claudia says, “I am really honoured to have been offered to read medicine, and as an RP graduate, I feel responsible to set a good example to my fellow juniors who have the potential and strive to be doctors too.”

Choosing RP was the best decision I’ve made as… it opened a lot of doors for me and I’ve walked away with a lifetime of memories which I believe no other institution can replace. Three years ago, I wasn’t sure if this was the path for me as it is a non-conventional route, but this uncertainty was what made it all better.

I am able to apply what I’ve picked up in RP to my higher studies as… the PBL approach makes one a

very independent learner and in university, you are required to be very independent.

I’ve learned in RP that… time is of the essence – don’t procrastinate, if you can’t explain something simply, you don’t understand it enough. Also, whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re probably right.

Two RP Freshmen Scholarships recipients share how their scholarships have given them an edge over the rest! Scholarships are filled with great opportunities and can definitely be an excellent financial aid for students. At RP, we believe in helping our students by providing them with opportunities to discover their potential, and the RP Freshmen Scholarships is one of the many ways.

Tan Eng Y00n End0wment Sch0larship Recipient My journey as an RP student… has been great! Since the first day of school, I’ve felt extremely welcomed whenever I step onto campus. The facilitators are friendly and they treat us like adults. I am grateful to have caring friends because they give me a strong sense of belonging in RP.

The Tan Eng Yoon Endowment Scholarship has helped me… lessen my financial burden by covering my school and transport fees. This scholarship has motivated me to be a good role model for others. In fact, I will do my best to guide my classmates who need help understanding the lessons.

What I like best about RP is… its PBL system! Through working with different people, we learn to interact with and adapt to the different types of people around us. This way of learning enables us to make friends outside our own school because we would sometimes seek help from friends in another class who are taking the same module.

Being a member of RP’s Wushu CCA… is very heart-warming because everyone is very united. It is a regret that I am unable to commit to the national team’s daily training, however I make sure I never fail to attend all my CCA training in school. The RP Wushu team is also extremely nice and patient when it comes to teaching the juniors.

Diploma in Technology & Arts Management (now known as Diploma in Arts and Theatre Management)

School of Technology for the Arts Year 1

My journey as an RP student… is different from the one I had in ITE where we were assigned projects only once in a while. In RP, classes are more interesting and engaging.

The Far East Organization Scholarship has helped me… to lessen my family’s financial

burden. Both my parents are working to provide for the family and I feel that the scholarship has indeed lightened their burden. I’m doing my part for the family.

What I like best about RP is… the flexibility given to us. I get to plan my own targets and set my own timeframe to achieve them. Besides, I get to wear what I like to school. As a Diploma in Technology & Arts Management student, the clothes I don are a platform for expression and an art form for me, rather than a basic necessity.

Being a member of RP’s Campus Art Production & Drama CCA… has given me more exposure to the industry. As my passion lies in singing and performing, I feel that the CCA exposes me to real-life experiences that prepare me for the future.

Want to get a head start in RP like Yan Ni and Jun Hao? RP believes in giving deserving students the chance. Got an issue you need help tackling or are unsure about certain things? Fret not, our counsellors are at your service! Does RP have overseas internships or overseas exchange programmes? Yes, all RP students have the opportunity to do industry attachments (also known as internships) either locally or overseas. Students are usually attached to a company for a period of 16 to 24 weeks in their third year of study. Our students also get to participate in Student Overseas Trips (also known as overseas exchange programmes) to other countries to gain insights on how the industries function, take part in community projects, and get a taste of the different cultures.

I’ve heard from my peers about Problem-Based Learning (PBL) but am not very sure what it is all about. Will it be easy for secondary school or ITE students to study and learn through the PBL method? PBL is a teaching style that enhances students’ problemsolving process skills, a lifelong learning attitude and readyto-use knowledge. In the process, it develops students’ confidence, resourcefulness, and teamwork abilities. It is not difficult to adapt to PBL as the lesson setting is quite similar to a typical classroom setting. The main difference is instead of the teacher feeding information, theory, and answers, students in a PBL class are supposed to work in groups to come up with their own solutions to the problems that are related to the modules they are studying.

My family can’t afford to pay for my tertiary education but I’ve been eyeing a course in RP for a long time. Is there any way RP can help me with my situation? Yes, RP helps students who have financial difficulties by offering bursaries. There are government bursaries, bursaries offered by private organisations, and the RP Needy Student Fund. The application for bursaries and the RP Needy Student Fund is open at the beginning of every semester. To find out more, email help-student@rp.edu.sg.

I heard students in RP are being assessed daily. Does it mean they have tests every day? What about other examinations? RP students are assessed daily based on their performance in class and their ‘Reflection Journals’ (RJ) at the end of the day. Over the semester, you will take five modules, each of which consists of 15 weeks in total. Your final grade for each module will depend on two things - your daily performance, and three ‘Understanding Tests’ (UT) taken at different points during the semester.

teaching excellence With a wealth of knowledge and industry experience under their belts, RP students have the privilege of learning from facilitators who are maestros in their own fields.

Emida Natalaray SENI0R ACADEMIC STAFF School of Technology for the Arts

lennie sim

SENI0R ACADEMIC STAFF School of Hospitality

An RP facilitator since 2011, Emida started out as a production assistant in the industry. Since then, she has had the opportunity to not only direct, but also create stories for some of the most popular local shows on Channel 5 such as Growing Up, Living with Lydia, and Police and Thief. One of the episodes of Growing Up which she directed even got nominated for an Emmy Award for ‘Best Foreign Series’! A true veteran at drama, Emida also produced the first season of Singapore Idol and even worked with Walt Disney Worldwide!

Why is RP’s teaching environment good for students? What I like about RP is the problem-solving approach to learning. Students are presented with a scenario that can actually happen in a production, and they work in teams to come up with creative solutions or even short video clips that reflect the learning points of the day’s lesson. They also learn to put aside their personal feelings and work together in teams.

What are your thoughts of RP as an institution? RP is an institution that strives to be progressive with a human touch. There is a strong focus on industry collaboration and internship. With the students’ overall wellbeing in mind, there is also a strong sense of ‘no student gets left behind’. You can see this with the mentorship programme and student financial schemes.

Prior to joining RP, Lennie Sim was a part of the Singapore Tourism Board and had also worked in the exhibition industry with the ASEAN Tourism Forum. Throughout the years, Lennie rose into prominent positions, working as the senior operations manager for Kingsmen Exhibits Pte Ltd, the assistant director of operations at Singapore Expo, and assistant general manager at BL Packaging Pte Ltd where he was based in Guangzhou, China. Some of the prestigious events that Lennie played a part include the biennial Asian Aerospace in Singapore, Food & Hotel Asia, Food & Hotel Vietnam, Communic/Broadcast Asia, MTA and MTA Vietnam. Today, Lennie is the module chair for the exhibition management module and has been facilitating in RP for the past three years.

How does your industry experience aid you in your lessons? My experience is an advantage as I can demonstrate how theory is being translated into practice. When real-life scenarios are shared, there is better identification with the students and hence better understanding of the theory.

Why is RP’s teaching environment good for students? I find the teaching environment here extremely conducive and students are able to explore and express their creativity. I believe in RP, regardless of whether you are a quiet or vocal student, you will have your chance to blossom and excel. We take pride in our graduates and the bonds that were forged during their time in RP remain intact well after they set forth in their careers.
