Beauty Quick Hair Makeup
Hey,
Looking your best for school is just a few simple steps away. Let’s check them out here.
1.
3.
Pretty Peepers
Not ready for the important presentation? Freshen up instantly by sweeping a light shade of pink or bronze eyeshadow all the way up to your brow bone for a wide-eyed look!
Lash Out
2.
Two quick coats of mascara are all you need to look ready for school! Apply it in a zig-zag motion and voila, you’re ready to go!
5.
Lip Service
4.
Don’t let your lips get chapped from overstaying in an air-conditioned environment. Moisturise your lips with a sweet pink gloss for a lovely finish.
Tress Chic
Leave bedhead at home and go to school sporting a neat yet classic look! Just grab two sections of your hair from the side of your head and twist them tightly together as shown. Insert bobby pins to hold them down. Now you’re ready for school!
2 on her: Cream Top with Shoulder Pads from Wicked Laundry, $69
Royal Blush
Stuck in class all day? Get the sun-kissed look and make your cheeks glow with colour by using a rosy blush across the apple of your cheeks.
3. 1.
Hide & Seek
2.
First impression counts right? To hide your dark eye circles, use a concealer, dotting it as shown. Blend it into the skin and you’ll sport bright, happy peepers!
Clean Start
Guys, avoid looking like a slob with a time-saving wash like Nivea Arctic Freeze Wash & Shave Gel, $9.90. It doubles up as a quick face wash while prepping your skin for a shave at the same time!
4.
Sunny Days
With so many outdoor Student Life Activities you can join at RP, you’ll need to make sure you get maximum sun protection. Pick one with at least SPF 30 to prevent skin damage!
5. Wax Solution
There’s nothing more annoying than sporting flat, lifeless mane just before an important presentation, so rub hair wax or clay into your hair using your fingers. This will help to give it shape!
Hairy Affair
No time to style your hair in the morning? Blow drying your hair isn’t just quick, it also gives your hair lots of instant volume!

the
Try to arrive a little early so I can squeeze in the crowded elevator up to class. Failing which, I still have enough time to climb up the flight of stairs.
[0829] It’s the craziest timing of the day as I watch some
of my classmates make a mad dash into the classroom. Punctuality is a good habit to develop for the working world.
[0830-0930] This is what we call the
First Meeting. RP uses a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach so this first
hour is when we get the ‘problem statement of the day’ and engage in class discussion. We work in a group to define the problem, what we understand of it, and outline what we need to find out in order to solve it. 30 15 Our first study break of the
[09 -10 ]
day! This time is used for us to engage in learning activities, for example: work on a worksheet, which was earlier given by our facilitator to have a better understanding of the problem.
[1015-1130] It’s back to class for our Second Meeting where the facilitator discusses the worksheet in class and then goes around the class speaking to the various groups about our tactics and possible solutions towards the problem statement of the day.
[1130-1330] This is the BIG STUDY
BREAK! It’s important to use this time wisely so I usually finish my lunch within the first hour so that the second hour can be used for more research on the problem statement. I head to the western food stall at Block E1 for their yummy Chicken Chop with Mashed Potatoes then it’s back to researching and producing our presentation to the solution for the next class session.
[1330-1530] We call this our Third
Meeting and this is where the various groups present findings
of the day to the whole class. I always have a lot of opinions so I’m very glad I get another chance to speak up and share my thoughts – even about other teams’ findings! After everyone has presented, our facilitator will present the ‘solution’ towards the problem statement. Answers are derived based on assumptions, hence we won’t feel bad if our findings don’t match our facilitators’ solutions. The main thing is we get to practise the process of finding solutions to problems, which is a really useful skill for everyday life!
[1530-1730] End of the day! I make a mental note to
remember to do my Reflection Journal (RJ), which needs to be submitted before 2359 hr today. Through my RJ, the facilitator is able to assess my understanding of the module and provide feedback. Then I head to the sports complex to chill with my friends before my Rugby Interest Group (IG) starts. Even though Student Life Activities (SLA) are not compulsory at RP, I make the most of the opportunity because I meet so many new friends, learn new skills and have so much fun in my IG!

As one chapter of your life closes, another begins. Polytechnic life is very different from secondary school so here’s what a typical day at RP is like through the eyes of Angeline Wong, Diploma of Communication and Information Design Year 2 student.

Yes, actually I was wondering what is this thing I keep hearing about – PBL?

Kelly: But how does it work? Mark: Well, when you come to class every day, your facilitator will give you the ‘problem of the day’ and then you will have to conduct research on the issue, voice your opinions on it and propose solutions to the problem by the end of the day. Kelly: Wow that sounds quite interesting! But what if I don’t know how to solve the problem? Mark: Don’t worry! You will work in a group of about five students and I’m sure you’ve heard the saying ‘more heads are better than one’? Also, your teacher will be your facilitator and guide you towards the solution.

Learn to be a more confident person with these tips.
H
ave you ever wondered why some of your friends appear confident while others come across as shy? Some people seem like they were born confident and the truth is that there are different factors that impact a person’s confidence level, like your upbringing and past experiences in life. But don’t worry – you can actually learn how to be more confident!
Yesmin Chan, Counsellor from Student Services at RP
offers five tips that will help you be more confident in life.
Love Yourself
This is the first step to being confident in life. “Quit thinking you have to be perfect all the time. Be good to yourself and remember to appreciate yourself,” says Yesmin.
Be Positive
“Practise having a positive mindset and use positive language,” says Yesmin. Your thoughts are more powerful than you think. So don’t underestimate the power of positive thinking and using positive words because when you feel happy, you will naturally feel more confident too.
Smile on her: Cobalt Blue Dress from Wicked Laundry, $79; Heels, Model’s Own
“When you smile and greet people, they will smile and greet you back. This will help you build positive relationships and start new ones,” explains Yesmin. When you smile, you are also projecting to the world that you are a confident person and people will respond to a confident you. This will help you believe it too.
Avoid Negative People
Stay away from people who often bring you down, advises Yesmin. Their negative energy will infect you and may make you feel lousy so don’t let that happen.
Face your Fears
When you have the courage to face your fears, you may just overcome them and that will definitely add towards building up your confidence. If you face your fears and fail, you can learn from the failure and that too, will help you become a more confident person in the long run.

Take It Easy!
Stress is part and parcel of life so equip yourself with important stressmanagement skills and you will be able to cope with whatever life throws at you.
Here are five tips to help you manage stress as you start a new chapter in your life at RP.
1
Be Self-aware
It’s important to know yourself physically, mentally, socially and academically. And regular self-reflection will help you prepare yourself well for any challenge. It will also help watch out for signs of negative impact of stress.
2
Take Care of Yourself
Looking after yourself physically and mentally is essential to your general wellbeing, which helps combat stress. Yesmin suggests getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet and fitting in exercise and relaxation routines into your daily schedule.
3
Maintain Healthy Relationships
A good social support system goes a long way in helping you handle the everyday stresses of life. “Keeping friends from secondary school, finding new friendships at polytechnic and maintaining good interpersonal relationships at home are vital for a young person to be resilient to stress,” says Yesmin.
4
Manage your Time Well
5
Have a Positive Mindset
Plan your time properly to prevent anxiety from building up as this will lead to stress. For example, don’t wait until the last minute to complete your school assignments. Yesmin recommends setting realistic goals and allocating sufficient time for the different areas in your life like part-time jobs, school, projects and social activities.
ew school, new N classmates, new social environment,
new learning style, new travel routes – new (almost) everything!
If you’re starting to feel anxious about whether you are going to be able to fit in or make friends as good as those you had in secondary school, or whether you will do well in your studies at RP, read on to discover how to counteract pressure. “Stress is simply an essential component of human life which can motivate us to advance,” says Yesmin Chan, Counsellor from Student Services at RP. So a healthy amount of stress can actually help us progress and excel in our lives. But how do you know if the stress you’re enduring treads into the unhealthy zone? Says Yesmin: “Stress becomes a negative impact on us when it is affecting our daily physical and mental functioning.” Signs that you may be overly stressed include weight loss or gain, loss of appetite, insomnia, fatigue, loss of concentration, social withdrawal, change in attitudes and behaviour, and a decline in academic results.
Finally, “a positive mindset is a vital ingredient for happiness and success in life or in polytechnic,” says Yesmin.

But the Year 3 Communication and Information Design student is taking her time to choose the right one.
What I learnt about myself from the competition: That I’m not as competitive as I thought I would be. It surprised me because I’m usually the competitive one. I think the judges chose me because… I have some stage experience, having done fashion shows before. I knew it would show if I was too self-conscious so I just had fun onstage. Being in RP helped me win the competition because… we have to make presentations in class every day so that helped boost my confidence. If I wasn’t in RP, I would definitely be less comfortable in front of the camera or a big group of people. RP Life… is about having fun, building my confidence and making friends. As we reach the end of our adolescence, the education we get in polytechnic is definitive of how we will turn out in the future. I don’t like being spoon-fed when it comes to learning so I like how RP’s Problem-Based Learning helps us find our own solutions to problems.
DANIEL KOH Seventeen-year-old Daniel Koh made news headlines when he represented Singapore in the Youth Olympic Games’ road race and mountain bike events. Despite picking up cycling only two years ago, Daniel has already competed in numerous events like the Singapore National MTB Championship and OCBC Cycle Singapore, as well as raced and trained in countries like Switzerland, Thailand and Malaysia. The tall, lanky teenager is currently in Year 1 of his Diploma in Sports and Exercise Sciences at RP.
Greatest achievement in mountain biking so far: Representing Singapore in the Youth Olympic Games 2010. photo: The New Paper
It was indeed an excellent experience and an eye-opener.
RP life… has been good for me. We are able to interact with interesting people from all walks of life. Every day is a new adventure. The one thing I enjoy most in RP is being with my friends! They are a group of good, humorous, caring and supportive people.
RP has made me a better competitor because of… the support I have received from my peers and fellow facilitators who have encouraged me to perform better in every race.
16
At RP, teachers are called facilitators because they don’t teach – they facilitate learning. They guide students using Problem-Based Learning (PBL), which creates graduates who are confident in solving any problem in their future jobs and very comfortable in giving public presentations. Graduates will also become exceptionally resourceful and excellent team players. To be effective in PBL, all facilitators undergo a 5-Day PBL Foundation workshop themselves before starting their unique journey as an educator at RP.
Melanie Wong
Facilitator for School of Applied Science (Diploma in Biomedical Sciences) Malaysia-born Melanie Wong discovered her passion for teaching whilst studying and tutoring at The University of Melbourne, Australia where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) with a double major in Genetics and Mathematics & Statistics. Melanie has been with RP for four years.
Meet Three Rp Outstanding ho Go W rs Facilitato ile To The Extra M g Minds. n u Yo Nurture
Teaching motto: We don’t only learn from what we read in textbooks – our life experiences probably teach us more! PBL… Allows me to challenge my students more. RP students get to put on the hat of an investigator and problem solver.
My classes are fun because… I try to be creative in the way lessons are conducted – games, quizzes, role-play and debates.
Tan Yen Ping
Facilitator for School Of Engineering (Diploma in Supply Chain Management) Before Tan Yen Ping joined RP as a facilitator five years ago, she was a Business Analyst with a third party logistics provider. She holds a Bachelor of Engineering and Masters in Engineering, both from National University of Singapore.
Teaching motto: To help students
embark on their learning journey to discover and find solutions for themselves.
My teaching approach is unique because… I believe in
creating a vibrant learning environment in class so that students are motivated to learn and share ideas freely. I try to engage them in discussions by bringing in real-life examples that students can easily relate to.
I inject fun into my classes by… Having gallery walks, hands-on
sessions, lab activities, quiz sessions or just a simple change of meeting location.
Dr Santhiagu Ezhilvalavan (Dr Valavan) Facilitator for School of Applied Science (Diploma in Materials Science)
Born to a family of educators, Dr Valavan has received numerous accolades in the five years he has been with RP, including the ‘Outstanding Mentor Award’ from the Ministry of Education for the last three years. His highest qualification is a Doctorate in Philosophy in Materials Science from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India.
Teaching motto: To share my experience and enable students to be independent, critical thinkers and life-long learners! PBL… Adds another dimension to students’ learning process. It enhances confidence, self-directed and deeper learning, and improves team-building, leadership, presentation, questioning, problem-solving and time management skills. My classes are interesting because… I understand the students, motivate them, and create a mood and healthy atmosphere for them to learn. I can proudly say that only a few students are absent for my class! 17
At RP, we offer a wide range of financial assistance schemes like education loans, subsidies and bursaries that are readily available to take a load off your shoulders and give you peace of mind so you can focus on your studies.
What are some of the Scholarships and Financial Schemes at RP?
T
here are various scholarships available to full-time students who excel in their academic studies. Often, eligibility also calls for a good track record in Co-curricular Activities (which we call Student Life Activities at RP), and other requirements outlined by the donor, such as a family’s household income. Scholarship amounts range from a few hundred to over two thousand dollars for each academic year. There is also a Sunburst Scholarship which offers up to $20,000 for outstanding students. If you are in your second or third year of study at RP, you may apply for an RP administered scholarship, which provides between $1,500 and $2,500 per academic year – on condition that you have outstanding academic results (GPA of 3.5 or more), and meet other criteria like having commendable record of Student Life Activities and good conduct in school. You will need to attend an interview session, and may be required to perform an internship with the sponsoring organisation if you are successfully awarded a scholarship. Good news if your Mum or Dad happens to work at Baxter Healthcare’s local office – and you share their passion for science or engineering. Consider applying for the Baxter Scholarship, when you are in your second or third year of study at the School of Applied Science or School of Engineering – provided you have a GPA of 3.5 and more, with no disciplinary record, and are actively involved in Student Life Activities. The value of this scholarship is $2,500 per academic year.

Campus life is always interesting at RP because you can make friends with students from all over the world! Meet three international students who are loving it here.
Network
It’s easy to make friends at RP because of the way we learn here.
Harris Kristanto, 21 Diploma in Industrial and Operations Management, Year 3
Chain Yean Shan, 18 Diploma in Business Information Systems, Year 1 Malaysian student Chain Yean Shan chose to further her studies in Singapore as the country is “one of the most technologically and economically advanced in Southeast Asia.” Shares Yean Shan: “I chose RP because of its Problem-Based Learning (PBL) system as I don’t like lecture-style learning. We deal with difficulties every day in life and need to solve them so I think PBL will help me in my future career.” The daily presentations she has to do at RP help Yean Shan feel more confident in front of a crowd while improving her communication skills. Being a member of the International Student Club has also enabled Yean Shan to beef up her communication and leadership skills, as well as widen her network. Outside school, you might bump into the self-taught amateur photographer taking photos around the city especially at Marina Bay, where she loves to hang out.
I joined the International Student Club to make more friends from different countries. Pan Jing, 21 Diploma in Biomedical Sciences, Year 2 As the current President of the International Student Club, Pan Jing literally has friends from around the world. But it wasn’t always that way. “It was a bit hard to make friends at first because of the different culture and language,” she shares. Now, the Chinese national has a large social network on-campus where she lives, and finds her fellow Singaporean schoolmates “lively and humorous”. Outside the classroom, you can usually find Pan Jing participating at events and activities organised at RP, or hanging out in the library were she can spend time with friends, listen to music and of course, study.
Harris Kristanto from Indonesia is looking forward to a future career in engineering and is confident the Diploma in Industrial and Operations Management he is pursuing will help him prepare well for that. In fact, Harris is already considering starting his own business in this field. In school, you will often catch Harris, who lives in a hostel on-campus, hanging out at the multi-purpose sports complex and playing soccer with his friends, especially on the weekends. Like most foreign students, Harris became a member of the International Student Club to expand his social network as well as do his part to look into the welfare of other international students. Inspired by his love for mathematics, he also helped to start the Puzzle Interest Group (IG) last year, which regularly sends out puzzle quiz emails to RP students and holds competitions. Harris spends his free time hanging out with friends at malls in the city, playing video games or skating at East Coast Park.
I’d be sleeping in class most of the time if not for RP’s unique Problem-Based Learning approach!
