INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES

A Rewarding Internship Experience at Unilever Myanmar

09

When Magesh took on his Overseas Industry Immersion Programme (OIIP) posting to Yangon, Myanmar as a Procurement Excellence intern, he not only had to tackle operational issues at work, but also inter-regional differences in language and working styles. The five-month stint with Unilever Myanmar Services’ supply chain and procurement department exposed him to multi-million dollar budget projects and the Diploma in Industrial & Operations Management (DIOM) student took it in his stride. “I was able to apply my course learning strategically in an overseas setting,” Magesh shares. “RP prepared me well as a problem solver so I could contribute professionally. I’m glad I stepped out of my comfort zone!” Magesh was also excited about the valuable opportunities the internship provided. He worked with factory managers and vendors as well as clients, broadening his understanding of partnership and collaboration. “This was truly an eye-opening experience,” he says.

Taking her Local Internship Experience to WorldSkills Singapore Third year student Lee Yan Yi, Xalden has benefitted a lot from her 20-week local internship experience with leading logistics provider, Kuehne and Nagel. With the opportunity to explore various aspects of sea freight — which included handling shipments of both general and dangerous goods — came first-hand experience which stood her in good stead when she represented RP in freight forwarding at the WorldSkills Singapore competition. She attests, “The training from the internship has prepared me well for this challenge.”

BEYOND BORDERS Varsity and Industry Visits in Taipei, Taiwan

October 2018 saw a team of 46 students and three staff from Diploma in Engineering Design with Business on a seven-day school trip to Taipei. At the National Taiwan University, our RP team learnt of the famed institution’s history and culture from friendly campus tour guides, who were its alumni. The team also called on the National Taiwan Normal University, where they visited various engineering and product design labs related to their field of study. The trip included company visits — some interesting ones being Pacific Cycles, where the students learnt about bicycle design and production; Sha Yang Ye Robot Wonderland, where they got to interact with entertainment robots; and Taipei Fablab, where they made an electronic voodoo doll!

10

An Eye-Opening Study Trip to Osaka, Japan The 6-day-5-night trip to Osaka, Japan for students from the Diploma in Aerospace Engineering was very enlightening. In a country vastly different from Singapore, they discovered, besides its cultural treasures, a people who were always welcoming, friendly and respectful. The group stopped by historical monuments in Ancient Kyoto, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as the modern cities of Osaka and Nagoya, where they had the opportunity to observe and learn about the business

culture and traditions of the Japanese. They visited universities, the Unagi Pie Factory, the Suzuki museum, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JSDF) air base, and the Hamamatsu Air Park in Hamamatsu. Most memorably, the youths participated in a structural design workshop at the Osaka Prefecture University College of Technology. Here, they interacted with their Japanese counterparts, making new friends whom they still keep in touch.

LEARNING THROUGH SERVICE

Fostering Leadership and Enterprise at Myanmar The Temasek Foundation International-Specialists’ Community Action and Leadership Exchange (TFI-SCALE) is an exchange programme which aims to build leadership capabilities and develop friendship among student leaders in Technical Vocational Education and Training Institutions (TVET) of Higher Learning in Asia. Through activities focused on leadership, technology and enterprise, it fosters a greater understanding and appreciation of the challenges in Asia and inspires TVET student leaders to positive action.

The students also visited a monastery school on the outskirts of Yangon, where they conducted workshops to promote an interest in engineering to young Burmese students. Two years back, a team of RP students had installed a photovoltaic system, so some timely maintenance was opportunely performed during the same trip.

Engineering a City of Love All Year 1 SEG students had the chance to interact with beneficiaries from eight voluntary welfare organisations. This service-learning component is incorporated into an engineering design module where students design and build solutions (with prototypes) to tackle real-life problems faced by the beneficiaries. Through the service-learning programme, the students taught the beneficiaries to make bags with LED keychains, craft photo frames as well as customise terrariums. These interactive activities, together with the excursions to Jewel Changi Airport and Gardens by the Bay, were very wellreceived by both participating groups. RP’s Diploma in Supply Chain Management student Warren Chay shares, “I saw that most of the elderly that we accompanied enjoyed themselves… As we walked, they

recalled some vivid and happy memories that they shared with everyone.” Towards the end of the semester, the beneficiaries were invited to RP to review the prototypes built by our students and share their feedback. This module, conceptualised by a team of SEG lecturers, has also been recognised with the Cities of Love Award 2018 (Merit), MOE Innergy Award 2019 (Bronze) and Curriculum Innovation Award 2019, for its positive impact in the community.

12

On 29 March 2019, a group of 16 SEG students and two RP School of Management and Communication students travelled to Yangon, Myanmar for a two-week outbound programme. Working closely with students from Yangon Technological University (YTU), the team implemented a smart-campus initiative by designing and implementing an energy monitoring system.

13

ACHIEVEMENTS

A Good Show at Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2019 108 teams, 18 countries, one race track: the Shell Eco-marathon Asia is no walk in the park. At the Sepang F1 International Circuit in Malaysia, a team of eight Diploma in Engineering Systems & Management (DESM) students unveiled their entry in the UrbanConcept Battery Electric category, having worked through the technical complexities of building a car from scratch. Not only did they pass all technical and safety inspections, which only half the teams managed, they were also the only non-university team to complete the feat, and one of only two Singaporean teams to do so. One of the world’s leading energy efficiency competitions, the Shell Eco-marathon is a unique global programme where science, technology, engineering and math students compete to design, build and race ultra-energy efficient cars. While this year’s DESM model that featured a completely new interior attained a good result, SEG is looking forward to 2020, when they will tackle a different category, with a different propulsion system and different rules.

Bronze Medal Win at WorldSkills Singapore 2018 Three SEG students took part in WorldSkills Singapore 2018, competing in Information Network Cabling. This biennial event is the premier national skills competition for participants from local polytechnics, Institutes of Technical Education, autonomous universities and the public. It was a gruelling test of our students’ proficiency as well as their mental and physical strength, as they had to complete five tasks (Campus Cabling, Building Cabling, Residential Cabling, Fibre Speed Test, Copper Speed Test) within the three days of competition. The students had been very committed, spending countless hours training for a chance to represent RP in this prestigious contest. The hard work put up by the students and coaches paid off, with SEG student Mark Seow clinching the Bronze Medal at the Finals.
