My group discusses our pointers for the Problem Definition Template (PDT). The PDT acts as a guide for us to see what we know, don’'t know and need to find out from the brief.
Today’'s module is Campaigns and Advertisement Design. Our facilitator, Ms Charlotte Char starts the lesson by diving into our problem statement of the week, which requires us to explore and point out the most important points in a client brief.
After our presentation, we have a Q&A session with the class to 2 15pm answer any 4 00pm questions they may have.
It’'s finally our turn to present! Hope we do a good job!
Time to head over to the Media Lab to do some filming. In the Media Lab, we get briefed by our facilitator, Ms Emilia Idris on what to do.
Once all the groups have presented, Ms Char then goes through with us the suggested solution for today’'s lesson before dismissing us.
For today'’s filming, I have to take on the role of the director! How exciting! I really enjoy broadcast!
Time to write our points on the board! After all five teams have written all their points, Ms Char takes us through them before releasing us for our break.

About the Student RP has transformed final-year student Brenda Kho Khai Ling to not just an effective leader, she is now also a better team player as she can communicate and work well with all kinds of people. Additionally, she has learnt to think out of the box, and to look at things from different perspectives. Previously an intern at T\PR, an established public relations firm, Brenda credits the Media Lab for enabling her to get a taste of the industry. “It’s a place where you can really put what you have learnt into action and experience what it’s like working in the media industry. At the same time, producing broadcast pieces and articles is lots of fun.” When asked why potential students should choose RP as their preferred tertiary institution, Brenda said, “RP is the place to go if you want to stretch your potential and nurture your talents and abilities.”
What's PBL?
RP offers a holistic educational experience through various innovative teaching approaches, leveraging the fundamentals of Problem-based Learning (PBL). Guided by trained facilitators, students work in teams to solve problems and present viable solutions to the class. Through small class size, RP facilitators (aka lecturers) guide you to solve problems, overcome challenges, and enable you to experience working in a team. Such PBL sessions provide immense value as you would be wellprepared to take on the real working world.
PBL Workshops for secondary school students
Led by RP’s own student facilitators, the two-hour workshops held at the RP campus will give secondary school students a taste of RP’s unique learning process. These exciting workshops is absolutely free, so come and experience RP today! To find out more, visit www.rp.edu.sg/learning_journeys.aspx
About Campaigns and Advertisement Design
This module introduces students to the broadcast and print environment. It will then go into advertisement conceptualisation and copywriting. Students will appreciate how the role and function of campaigns vary in the public and private sectors. Knowing the production process and some of the restrictions will enable them to successfully execute campaigns and advertisements.
About the Facilitator Her career began with the editorial department at SPH Magazines. Later, she ventured into public relations and events management for international luxury brands for almost a decade. Now, three and a half years on, Ms Charlotte Char is an academic staff facilitating the Diploma in Mass Communication in RP Centre for Enterprise and Communication. So, what’s special about the Diploma in Mass Communication? Well, according to Ms Char, “It is a diploma that covers comprehensive modules that are important to set a good foundation for communication students. Yet, it allows for specialisation – Journalism or Marketing Communication – towards the final year, to cater to students’ interests and abilities.” A fan of the PBL teaching approach, Ms Char further adds that RP students stand out from the rest as they are natural problem-solvers. “They have to solve problems and present their suggested solutions daily. Such practice cultivates a sense of curiosity and poise in our students and we have received positive feedback from internship companies that our interns tend to be more proactive and display a higher level of confidence when approaching new things.”

Are popular RP courses that hard to get into? Are grades all that matter? At RP, we look beyond academic achievements. Hear it from these students, who share with us how they got into their desired diploma courses. I fell in love with RP… when I first
stepped into campus during the Open House. I was greeted warmly by the friendly RP students and staff and I really felt at home. I knew I had to join RP!
I decided to join RP through JAE… as I felt that this right choice will bring me far.
Adora Tay Hui Ting Diploma in Customer Relationship and Service Management School of Hospitality Admission route: Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE)
Comparing the different courses across all polytechnics, SOH was the only one that offered my desired course. In fact, I was very captivated by the many exciting stories of students and facilitators from SOH!
My time in RP thus far… has been truly amazing! I get to
make friends each semester and especially in SOH, everyone knows each other. In RP, there are plenty of opportunities and programmes given. In April this year, I was offered the Diploma Plus in International Business. Certainly, the learning journey was a great opportunity and exposure.
Diploma in Arts and Theatre Management School of Technology for the Arts Admission route: Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP)
I made RP my choice because… of PBL and its environment. Also,
it’s the only polytechnic that offers the course I want to take. RP does not require any textbooks and this makes life easier. Trees are saved and I don’t have to carry much weight every day.
I knew I had to join RP’s PFP as… it offered an option for me to advance my education with direct entry to RP and I needn’t stress myself for O-levels. So why not grab it? Life in RP… is well-balanced and with consistent group assignments, I’ve learnt how to be an effective team player even though it is sometimes difficult for me due to my hearing impairment. However, I believe that the training I receive from RP will nurture me to be the best I can be.
You should join RP’s PFP because… it fast-tracked my
entry to RP where the environment is friendly and fun. Also, the facilitators are exceptionally kind and helpful. RP’s requirement of submitting a Reflection Journal after every lesson is beneficial as it hones my skill in writing reports that would come in handy for me when I join the workforce in the future.
RP is a great institution because… the teaching approach
allows me to connect and meet people from different walks of life and work alongside with them in class. I feel that this form of practice will help me in my future career and purposes. Now, I am looking forward to my Industry Immersion Programme (IIP) in 2014, hoping to learn more through my internship!

I chose RP… as it offers my
dream course which is the Diploma in Biomedical Sciences of course! Furthermore, I was fascinated by RP’s unique learning approach and figured it would be refreshing to try a different method of learning!
Raiyini D/O Balu
Diploma in Biomedical Sciences School of Applied Science Admission route: Joint Polytechnic Special Admissions Exercise (JPSAE)
Joining RP through JPSAE was the best choice… as I was given priority to be placed in my desired course with my good CCA record and special talents. I would strongly encourage those applying for a course to go through JPSAE as it increases your chances of getting into your dream course, especially if it is a popular one.
RP has been… nothing but fun and hassle-free, and I really appreciate the paperless environment. I’m enjoying my time here and I look forward to learning new things each day.

Diploma in Integrated Events Management School of Hospitality Admission route: Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP)
I decided to join RP through the PFP because… I really like the
fact that the means of learning here in RP is highly distinctive. Furthermore, I’m very fond of RP as it houses the best state-of-the-art facilities for us students! My friends from RP always had great things to share whenever I asked them about the learning environment here and I was also quite intrigued by the rich student culture in campus.
My RP adventure… has been such an eye-opener. Getting accustomed to the polytechnic lifestyle was a challenge for me, but the PFP made me realise that change is good. With the support of my peers and lecturers, I’m confident that I’ll always be moving forward to the right direction. Like they always say, hard work always earns a good harvest. Thanks to RP’s PFP… I enjoyed a seamless admission to the
course of my choice at RP where we have more interaction with our facilitators as the student quota is only approximately 25 per class. The classrooms are extremely spacious and comfortable, giving us plenty of room to carry out various classroom activities with ease. Talking about facilities, RP’s wide range of facilities is well-developed and the canteens here give us lots of food options.

Chiu Benson Diploma in Business Information Systems School of Infocomm Year 2
In RP, we believe in nurturing all-rounded students. And what better way to do so then through attachments overseas where students learn to be independent and resourceful?
Student Overseas TRAVEL Where: Queensland, Australia
Student Overseas TRAVEL Where: Melbourne, Australia
As part of an articulation agreement with Queensland University for Technology (QUT), final year student Janella had the opportunity to visit Brisbane on a four-day trip. There, she was introduced to the courses offered by QUT and was exposed the city’s entertainment industry.
Describing his one-week trip to Melbourne as a dream come true, Benson is grateful to RP for the wonderful opportunity to travel. Besides being exposed to different cultures, the second-year student feels that the trip has broadened his mind about the IT industry.
When I was there… I attended different workshops in QUT that taught us more about the entertainment industry. We even visited places like the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts, the Brisbane Powerhouse, and Doggett Street Music Studio.
When I was there... we visited companies such as Oracle and Microsoft. Through this trip, we learnt about the life of a consultant, heard stories of two experienced staff and understood more about their business analytics products.
I was able to put the knowledge and skills I’ve picked up from RP to the test… when I had to come up with a creative idea and present it during the lectures. Applying the skills Janella Ang Xiao Qing I picked up from the PBL system, I was able to craft a good presentation easily. Diploma in Sonic Arts
I was able to put the knowledge and skills I’ve picked up from RP to the test… as we are trained to do research every day. The study trip required us to do prior research on the company and prepare a list of questions that we would like to find out about the company or the IT products and processes involved.
School of Technology for the Arts I have benefited from the overseas trip as… it has given me good exposure to the different cultures and pushed me out of my comfort zone. It also taught me that I can apply Year 3 what I have learnt in RP when working with other people outside of school. The trip also taught me to be adaptable to changes and to think out of the box.
I have benefited from the overseas trip as… the study trip fulfilled my dream of visiting a country beyond Asia. It was an eye-opener that made me understand what IT can do, which is beyond just programming. I am now able to appreciate the relevance of my diploma, and what my possible options are beyond RP.

Industry Internship
Where: Cambodia
Where: Kowloon, Hong Kong
How does working 24 weeks in a foreign land sound to you? Jittery? Not for Eunice! As an intern at Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel, the Year 3 student steadily and professionally carried out all the tasks and duties assigned to her. The highlights of my internship… was being able to bridge the language gap of communicating in Cantonese with guests and colleagues. Although my pronunciation may not be accurate, I tried my best to correct it and avoid making the same mistake again. I am proud to say that I am now able to communicate in Cantonese fluently. I was able to put the knowledge and skills I’ve picked up from RP to the test… as RP has prepared me well for the industry. I remembered taking practical modules where we were trained to make up beds and do check-in and check-out procedures. I am glad that I had already mastered the basics in RP as it places me one step ahead of other new staff in the hotel.
Cheong Huimin Eunice Diploma in Hotel and Hospitality Management This internship has been valuable as… I learnt to be independent. Going overseas for School of Hospitality almost half a year may sound scary to some people, but these are the moments when we grow Year 3 and mature as individuals. I overcame my fears and started to enjoy and learn from the internship and even explored the locals’ way of life.

I was able to put the knowledge and skills I’ve picked up from RP to the test… easily! Things like Problem Definition Template, the first thing we do when we have our problem statement – where we state what we know, what we don’t know and what we need to find out – was what we did during the trip. Also, lessons from our engineering design module allowed us to easily run the engineering workshop on solar toys for the kids. As team leader… I had the opportunity to plan the activities for the whole trip. Due to language barrier, my friend, who was the co-leader, and I used simple English and spoke slowly when explaining things to the kids so that they could understand us. The overseas trip has motivated me… to be an effective leader and communicate better with people. It also allowed me to bring out what I am capable of.

What is the best thing about being a part of the Boys'’ Brigade? Hands down, seeing how the boys grow and mature. I have seen my company produce leaders who started out as blank canvases as recruits. The seniors and adult volunteers (like me) work hard to guide them. Watching them grow and transform is truly fulfilling.
They are barely done with their tertiary education, but these RP students are already making waves outside of school.
How is it like to be an adult volunteer officer in the Boys’' Brigade? It feels amazing. It’s like my whole Boys’ Brigade journey has come full circle. I have been a member since primary four, starting as a junior boy then to a senior boy in secondary school. It’s the least I can do to give back to the organisation where I have spent my growing up years. An organisation that has changed my life for the better, and an organisation that I love.
Were you able to apply what you've learnt in RP into your role in Boys’' Brigade? Definitely! In RP, I’ve learnt about team dynamics from working in teams every day. I’ve also managed to apply my effective communication skills in my role in the Boys’ Brigade. These are some of the essential skills I’ve picked up from the daily presentations back in RP.
Achievement: One ofe the creators of On People Project
What have you gained from this experience? The best thing from this experience is learning more about myself. I started to discover more about my strengths and flaws, and how I should carry myself as an individual.
Tell us all about the One People Project! I have stayed in Singapore for more than 3 years now. From my own experience, I always struggle to understand what the different public holidays mean to the respective races. My final year project supervisor encouraged me to work with her on the One People Project – an interactive online game for people to learn the cultures of the different races. Done in collaboration with OnePeople.SG, this project was widely appreciated and featured in several press reports.

To ensure that I was giving enough time to both my lessons and project, I gave 120% attention during my lessons. I used to spend the time after school mainly on this project. Doing so enabled me to stay focused and on track.

Achievement: Eight de years in Boys’ Briga
I still remembered how anxious I was when I participated in the qualifying round of WorldSkills Singapore. I made my school proud by clinching a silver medal. This was a great achievement because it was the first time RP participated in the restaurant service category.
I felt so proud of my team and myself. It was a challenging journey but everyone in my team contributed. We did self-learning and spent a lot of time and effort on this project. But when I saw the game being successfully launched, I felt that all was worth it.
Tell us how you managed to juggle this project and your lessons so well?
Diploma in Social Enterprise Management Centre for Enterprise and Communication Year 1
How was it like to participate in the WorldSkills competition?
How did it feel to see your efforts being recognised and appreciated by the Minister and secondary schools?
Our game is an android platform-based game which uses JAVA. The two modules I’ve taken in SOI - Object-Oriented Programming and Data Structures and Algorithms came in handy for me to develop the game. I was also able to apply PBL into this project especially when needing to think out of the box. This is the kind of ability you can develop from studying in RP.
Alastair Ng Kwan Tuck
What do you think makes RP different from any other schools? There are many reasons why RP stands out from the rest. Firstly, it is the only polytechnic that has a School of Hospitality (SOH). Secondly, the strong emphasis placed on students to be dressed in formal wear during classes trains me to be fully prepared for the corporate world – and this is not something that other schools practise. Furthermore, the semester’s worth of internship that RP arranges for us gives us valuable industry experience.
Tell us more about your passion for the service industry!

My passion for service was discovered after I graduated from secondary school. I was introduced to a job at a quick service restaurant in Universal Studios Singapore and I enjoyed myself while making the customers happy. And, at that point, I decided to take up the Diploma in Restaurant and Culinary Operations.

How has participating in the WorldSkills competition benefited you? These opportunities helped me gain a lot more skills than I would have imagined. I thank SOH and RP for giving me these opportunities to be able to do my school, my family and my country proud.

Our alumni shares how RP has opened up the path to their careers.
“You may say that I’m currently at the peak of my career,” says Danica when asked how her career as a lecturer is. Part of the first batch of students to study in RP’s Woodlands campus, the School of Sports, Health and Leisure (SHL) graduate recalls how she was blessed to have met good people who made her journey here great. “My facilitators and advisor were awesome and being in the Bowling CCA also gave me excellent friends. The team was like family to me.”
Danica Toh Shi Yee Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science School of Sports, Health and Leisure 2009 Graduate Occupation: Lecturer in Institute of Technical Education (College East)
Syamil Siddiq Bin Abdul Rahim Diploma in Civil Aviation
Prior to being a lecturer, Danica worked as a Netball coach and while taking that big leap was no easy feat, she’s glad she did it. “I wouldn’t say that this is my greatest success but it is an achievement having come such a long way. My time in SHL led me to where I am today. In fact, you can say that being in SHL has taught me to be an adaptable person.” Danica further adds that thanks to RP, she has become an expert in researching for information, doing presentations, writing reports, and even at doing reflection journals (RJ). “I am undergoing training in my job currently and am often required to write reflection journals. It is interesting that my colleagues will always rant at how easy I make doing RJs look!” What’s next for the sports enthusiast? Well, she has decided to take a shot at taking up a Masters in NIE and is intending to remain in this industry for a long time.
(Now known as Diploma in Aviation Management)
School of Engineering 2012 Graduate Occupation: NSF – Neighbourhood Police Centre Officer (NPCO) Career aspiration: Pilot
For Syamil, one of the greatest lessons he’s learnt is to look at things from different perspectives, no matter how tough the problem may be. “While there is no ‘hard-and-fast’ rule to obtain a solution, you’re always allowed to explore and apply your own creativity in addressing a problem,” he adds. A scholarship recipient with multiple awards under his belt, the humble student insists that he owes all his success to RP. “Without a shadow of a doubt, RP has been the very foundation of my success. The dynamic classroom environment enabled me to be inquisitive with my own learning.”
Though he is a recent graduate, he aspires to turn his greatest passion to reality by becoming a pilot. This was one of the reasons why he decided to enrol into the Diploma in Civil Aviation. “I chose to pursue this diploma course as I felt that this course would be able to open the doors for me to to be a part of Singapore’s rapidly evolving and expanding aviation industry.” And it looks like his diploma sure did take him a step closer to the industry. Upon completion of his National Service, Syamil will be furthering his studies in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Nanyang Technological University.

Diploma in Integrated Events Management School of Hospitality 2010 Graduate Occupation: Director and Co-founder of Greendot Gourmet Pte Ltd Describing his three yea r stint in RP as the best yea rs of his life, Leonard states that RP transformed him into the person he is tod ay. “Back in RP, I made clo se friends and met wonderful mentors. If possible, I would definitely like to reli ve my RP days. Although PBL was something new to me, I quickly adapted to it and would now choose PBL anytime over conven tion al learning.” Currently pursuing his par t-time business degree, Leonard co-founded Gre endot Gourmet – a vegeta rian catering business with a few friends back in 2011 . “Since RP days, I had alw ays thought of being an entrepreneur to work for myself and create someth ing that I can call my own. I started sharing ideas wit h like-minded people and soon Greendot was create d,” he adds. So, did the skills gained in RP come in handy for him? You bet! Besides cre diting the institution for nurturing him into a proble m-solver, the former SOH student shares that modul es such as Human Resour ce Management and Projec t Management has helped him in the business. “I think PBL definitely inst illed confidence in me and taught me to be self -reliant in my work. PBL encouraged me to think harder and deeper and, learn to effectively communicate and express my ideas. In short, PBL truly worked wo nders for me,” expresses Leonard.

What is the best thing about your diploma course?
Share with us about your diploma and lessons in RP!
Lessons are fun and interesting. Unlike secondary education, I feel that I am learning something I’m interested in that is related to what I want to do in the future. As such, I’m encouraged to work even harder because I find meaning in the things I am doing. Also, one of the exciting projects that my diploma programme is working on, is to raise awareness on social enterprises at *SCAPE. I think that this project is very meaningful as it gives us a taste of how social enterprises work.
Lessons in RP are very fun and I especially love the practical classes. As I am an aspiring pilot, I’m glad to be able to visit the A380 plane simulator in school and even get to fly airplanes virtually. Furthermore, the replica of the control tower, similar to that of Changi Airport, and the aircraft hangar in RP enables me to have hands-on learning. This is awesome because I get a taste of what it’s like to work in my dream industry.
Tell us more about your CCA! I am a member of Cyriva Club - a CCA for School of Engineering students that develops leadership, entrepreneurial, and management skills in us through exciting events. In Cyriva, I’ve been taught to plan and execute events. I get to design posters for school events and the opportunity to emcee for them. Being a member of Cyriva has been a big joy for me.

The courses in RP really suit my interests, but as my father is the only source of income in the family, I’'m not sure if we can afford the fees. Can RP help me? Yes, RP helps students who have financial difficulties. There are scholarships and bursaries offered by philanthropic organisations, and the RP Needy Student Fund. The application for financial assistance is open at the beginning of every semester. To find out more, email help-student@rp.edu.sg
I'm still considering my options as there are just so many exciting courses to choose from in RP! Can I seek advice from someone in RP? We encourage you to have a chat with the team of counsellors at RP’s JAE Course Counselling sessions. Happening from 13 January to 7 February 2014, it’ll help you get the best advice on course structure, future studies, and career prospects so that you can make an informed choice.
I think the PBL approach in RP is really unique, but I'’m afraid that I won’'t be able to keep up with classmates who may be more outspoken and sociable. I do not want to give up my dream course because of my shy nature. What should I do? It is normal to feel this way because it can be difficult for some of us to adapt to a new environment and new people. But don’t worry, once you’ve broken out of your comfort zone, you’ll realise that it is not that hard to mingle and make friends in RP! Here are some tips to help you: • Practise talking to one new person daily. • If presenting in front of the whole class makes you nervous, try voicing out within a small group, such as during group discussions or project meetings. • Remember, you may not be the only one feeling this way so take the first step and worry no more.
Upon graduation from RP, what are some of the options open to me? This is a question many students (past and present) have asked themselves when deciding their future. Upon graduation, you have two options – to start your career or to carry on studying at a university. Many of our graduates landed themselves jobs in the public and private sectors, some go on to pursue their degree programmes locally and even overseas. And some even venture out to be their own boss.

About Student Services Centre The Student Services Centre takes care of the holistic well-being of students in order to optimise their learning journey. We offer counselling services in the following areas: interpersonal/personal/emotional issues, coping with and solving problems, and decision-making.
There’s no doubt about it – RP students are blessed with awesome facilitators (aka lecturers) who are committed to bringing out the best in them. Prior to RP, Poh Kiaw journeyed with Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) for 10 years. Starting out as a practitioner and instructor, she conducted programmes and assisted in resource management, as well as provided administrative support to the instructing team. A dedicated individual, Poh Kiaw has been with RP for four years.
Your thoughts on… PBL “I consider PBL as a kind of experiential learning approach. It requires the facilitator to have a clear understanding of the lesson objective, careful assessment of students’ learning preference, styles and creativity in conducting and connecting learning activities. The presence of all these key factors in addition to the commitment from both the facilitator and students would make PBL an effective teaching method in preparing individuals to be a life-long learner.” How SHL students are prepared to enter the industry “As a whole, SHL nurtures students to be industry-ready in three areas: skills,
knowledge and attitude. Through the three years of engagement, students not only pick up technical skills relevant to their industry, but also meta-analysis skills such as problem-solving, critical inquiry thinking, and presentation skills. We help them to be industry-ready.” RP as an institution “Metaphorically, I would describe RP as ‘a person of character’. RP makes good attempts to excel and to develop persons of Yeong Poh Kiaw character (staff and students inclusive). To Academic Staff me, ‘a person of character’ is one who is good, who leads by example, who attempts School of Sports, Health and Leisure (SHL) to make the world a better place, and someone whom I can look up to.”
Being a part of RP isn’'t just exciting for students,– it is as fun for the facilitators too and Morgan can vouch for that. A facilitator at the School of Infocomm, the tech junkie shares that, even after five years of teaching in RP, he still enjoys engaging students and is still as passionate about teaching as the first day he joined.”
Your thoughts on… PBL “Innovation never stops. We use PBL as an effective way to teach students to become self-aware learners, through problemsolving, and the right skills to challenge themselves.” Your teaching style “I like to use interactive gadgets like Kinect and Leap-motion in student projects to make learning visual and exciting, while Morgan Heijdemann at the same time relevant and needed by Academic Staff the industry. We teach our students to think School of Infocomm (SOI) outside the box.”
How SOI students are prepared to enter the industry “In SOI, the students learn theory topics through class work and apply what they have been taught through practical projects such as module assignments, their final-year project and inter-school competitions. They then take a fullsemester internship with esteemed companies. This empowers our students and makes them valuable to our industry. Some of the students following this pathway are also asked by their internship companies to join them after graduation.”
