ENTREPRENEURSHIP – SERVING UP SOLUTIONS & INNOVATION

The Entrepreneurial Immersion Programme or EIP is a 20-week internship where students develop an idea/product/service with the goal of commercialisation. Prior to embarking on the EIP, students are equipped with entrepreneurial skills such as creative thinking and work ethics through a bootcamp. They will be assigned mentors who will guide them through the EIP learning process.

SportsMenu to the Rescue

Aiding Dementia Patients

It’s every parent’s bane — wanting to allow their young child to explore different sports, without breaking the bank. Fortunately, Diploma in Sport Management* students Brian Lim, Wong Ting Wei and Muhammad Shaheed Alam have come up with an online service to help.

“EIP provided the opportunity to try, fail and learn. It is an experience that money cannot buy,” Charlene Lim reveals. Together with fellow Diploma in Sport Management* student Ryan Teo, she has brought their product – a tracking device for dementia patients – to life.

The online service, SportsMenu, links parents of 5-to-12year-olds with various sports academies offering packages at competitive prices. Developed by these three studentathletes from Singapore Sports School under the EIP, SportsMenu promises a more affordable, reliable and easier way for children to discover their true passion for a sport.

The two students are passionate about helping our pioneer generation and created a gadget to facilitate active ageing. It took three prototypes before they had a practical model small and versatile enough to be feasible. They diligently consulted technicians, manufacturers, nurses, physiotherapists, physicians and geriatric specialists in the development process. Today, the tracker is being put through its paces and is at the investor commercialisation stage.

Founding their very own company was an experience of a lifetime, requiring them to wear many different hats — entrepreneur, marketer, presenter, networker, business administrator, competitor, accountant and web developer — which they have done with great aplomb. Brian attests, “The EIP enabled our business idea to become a reality.”

After many hours of hard work, Ryan and Charlene have since gained invaluable experience, honed their skills and sharpened their business acumen.

HEAR FROM

OUR GRADUATES At RP, the lessons outside the classrooms are ideal for an experiential learner like me. I found my critical thinking and communication skills put to the test throughout my learning journey here. The Diploma in Health Services Management exposed me to the challenges of an ageing population and prepared me to deliver healthcare to our people. This cemented my resolve to joining the public service to contribute what I can.”

Keefe Lau

07

Diploma in Health Services Management (DHMS) 2019 Graduate and Valedictorian Singapore Armed Forces Scholarship Board of Governors’ Award for the Most Outstanding Graduate of the Year Ngee Ann Kongsi Award for the Most Distinguished Graduate of the Year Frontier Health Care Group Medal Award

Among the slew of awards Keefe has received as a DHSM student is the prestigious SAF Scholarship, making him the first poly graduate to win it. Keefe shares, “While academic achievement is important, what matters more are the right values and the willingness to serve what is greater than us.” It is heartening to hear such words of wisdom from a youth out to transform the world, and it looks like he’s on his way there.

My education in Health Services Management paved my way in the nursing industry. I have picked up good communication skills and useful knowledge on the various medical packages available to patients. These benefitted me greatly when I worked as a Patient Service Associate in the hospital during my internship.”

Jessalyn Soh Wan Rong Diploma in Healthcare Administration (now known as Diploma in Health Services Management) 2019 Graduate Healthcare Scholarship by the Ministry of Health Holdings (MOHH) 2019

Jessalyn is highly enthusiastic and passionate about healthcare. She draws inspiration from her mother, who is a registered nurse. Jessalyn is part of the Lion Befrienders and visits old folks’ homes to care for the elderly. In 2018, she received the REPUBLIC Award that celebrated her display of character and compassion for marginalised groups in our community. With her passion, skills and knowledge, she is primed to be a great asset to the healthcare industry.

RP’s Problem-based Learning approach is ideal for an experiential learner like me! I was able to understand concepts and theories better because the lecturers in RP are markedly different from all the teachers I have had to date. They build great rapport with students and take genuine interest in our lives. I’ve received valuable guidance from them for my life decisions.”

Ho Yern Yee Diploma in Outdoor & Adventure Learning (DOAL) 2019 Graduate REPUBLIC Award 2018

Yern Yee’s lecturers uncovered her natural leadership instincts when she led an outdoor adventure programme for students from the Association for Persons with Special Needs and rallied her DOAL classmates around the project. Her ability was again recognised in a glowing commendation from her Outward Bound Vietnam supervisor following a 20-week internship there. Indeed, Yern Yee’s high standard of performance demonstrates how, at RP, one can be so much more.

08

The problem-based lessons were very flexible, allowing me to study at a comfortable pace. This suits my learning style, which is more kinesthetic and selfdirected. The open book examinations, field-based lessons and daily projects motivated me to study harder and I found the workload manageable. Most importantly, my interest was sustained as we applied classroom concepts to real-world situations.”

Khwang Li Yi Diploma in Sport Coaching (DSC) 2019 Graduate REPUBLIC Award 2018 Tharman Shanmugaratnam Book Prize Director’s Roll of Honour in AY2016, AY2017 and AY2018 Diploma Prize in AY2016, AY2017 and AY2018

Amongst our most inspiring student role models is Li Yi, a consistent top scorer who not only achieved a GPA of 3.94 but also excelled in the sporting arena. A medalist at the 2016 National Wushu and Sanda Championship, Li Yi also represented RP in table-tennis, volunteers at Singapore Sailing Federation events and acts as track-and-field coach for preschoolers at a local athletic club.

My frequent sports injuries as a young footballer sparked my interest in understanding the science behind sports-specific body movements. I knew the pain and the loneliness of suffering an injury, and wanted to equip myself to help prolong the longevity of other athletes in their sport. The Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science has put me on track.”

Ian Lau Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science (DSES) 2019 Graduate and Valedictorian Module Prize in Biomechanics United BMEC Gold Medal Award

09

Ian delivered his Valedictorian speech with vigour and passion, though quietly battling a lung infection. His resilience is his trademark. This is a young man who had an early career with the Football Association of Singapore’s Under 13-to-16s cut short when he tore two ligaments. During his O-Level year, he had knee reconstruction surgery performed. Despite these challenges, Ian persevered and excelled. Ian’s father notes he has not done this alone, appreciating the mentorship of his lecturers at RP.

Studying in RP was like being with family — my lecturers journeyed closely with me, offering care and guidance in my personal matters and making sure I was emotionally and mentally healthy, especially nearing my competitions. RP’s Problembased Learning approach also taught me a great deal about teamwork and synergising our strengths!”

Mohammad Jaris Goh Bin Ali Akbar Goh

Diploma in Sports & Leisure Management (Now merged and known as Diploma in Business, offered by RP School of Management and Communication) 2019 Graduate The Straits Times Athlete of the Year Moo Soon Chong Outstanding Student-Athlete Singapore Bowling Federation Bowler of the Year

As a national bowler, Jaris is keenly aware of how discipline and teamwork can transform your game. After deferring his education to train for the 2015 SEA Games, Jaris applied these same principles to his studies when he later joined RP. True to form, he was prompt with his assignments and helped his peers along too. Juggling an intense schedule and aided by his mentor and programme coordinator, Jaris has come a long way to achieve both academic and sporting successes.

SCHOOL

OVERSEAS TRIPS Taking Care of Body and Seoul Our Health Management & Promotion students ventured on a six-day trip to Seoul, South Korea in March 2019 to experience how holistic health is being encouraged in this metropolis.

Taking the Sport Higher! The Taekwondo aficionados amongst the Diploma in Sport Coaching and Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science students might have punched the air in excitement as they headed to Taekwondowon in Seoul. The cultural heritage site housing all things related to the martial art was a main highlight of the journey to South Korea. Our students studied various coaching methodologies used

in Taekwondo and were given ideas on how to make lessons more engaging — like incorporating music! It was an exceptional opportunity to explore sports instructional strategies and understand how sports analysis is practised.

10

Amongst some noteworthy venues they visited were the National Institute of Lifelong Learning, which promotes skills development, and the Jungnang Student Counselling Centre, which offers free career counselling services and workshops to local students. The RP team also trekked along the 8.4km Cheonggyecheon Stream, a family-friendly oasis drawing joggers, cyclists and people looking for a natural respite from the busy city. Our students’ favourite activity, though, was undoubtedly making lotus-seaweed pancakes at the Korea Temple Food Centre, where they were taught by the Chef Monk.

INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES

Helping Patients Get Back On Their Feet in Myanmar

11

The internship with Pun Hilang Siloam Hospital’s Rehabilitation Medicine department in Myanmar has been a valuable and meaningful experience for Health Management & Promotion student, Samuel Peh. Through working with a physiotherapist, Samuel was able to leverage what he had learnt in his course to plan and conduct exercises for patients to gradually restore their physical function. This enriching five-month internship stint has impacted Samuel positively and he has since returned to his studies feeling more motivated than before.

Acquiring Experience and Exchanging Skills Nur Yasirah, Hamlizan and Mustaqim probably never envisioned themselves as experts in Problem-based Learning (PBL) pedagogy, but the third-year Sport & Exercise Science students readily shared with their Indonesian peers when called upon. The three were at the University Negeri Padang serving as research assistants for half a year, assessing the fundamental movement skills of kindergarten children in rural Padang, Sumatra Barat. It turned out it was not only their Human Motor Control and Development know-how that was put to use — the Indonesian university’s Sport Science undergraduates were also interested to hear what they had to share about PBL too. Our students had a fruitful experience at these knowledge-sharing sessions.

Exercising Creativity in the Classroom It had been Divakaran S/O Mohan’s lifelong dream to work as a teacher, and his overseas internship at the Singapore International School in Myanmar was as rewarding as he had hoped. It might have been tough in the beginning, but Divakaran flexed his creative muscle, exploring new teaching methods and getting innovative when it came to sharing his knowledge with his students. Being immersed in a culturally-diverse and unfamiliar environment turned from being a drawback to a draw, driving his enthusiasm more and more. “I loved this internship, and enjoyed learning from my colleagues,” Divakaran says, sharing, “There was a strong ‘kampong spirit’ there!”

Working with 2-to-6-year-olds can leave one with both hands full, but third-year Sport Coaching student Zack Oh Yong Zhong is grateful for this challenging experience. Through an exciting 20-week internship with BearyFun Gym, Zack coached the children in fitness classes to boost their physical, emotional and cognitive abilities. At the same time, he managed the administrative tasks needed to operate a children’s gym. “I’m grateful to the coaches who helped me to adapt to different instructional styles and guided me on my teaching,” he says. “I learnt to be firm with the children, to give simple and direct instructions for their safety and discipline, and to make the sessions fun.”

12

Working with Young Children Can Be Both Challenging and Fun!

LEARNING THROUGH SERVICE

13

Helping Seniors Age Actively Through Exercise and Games

RP students know they have important roles to play in the community. In the case of our Diploma in Sport Coaching (DSC) students, this service took the form of conducting inclusive sports coaching for the elderly from the SunLove Senior Activity Centre (Marsiling). This year, the DSC students planned and facilitated activities such as basic exercises with the use of elastic bands, fun target games and Zumba sessions to encourage the elderly to stay fit and active whilst having fun! The activities nudged the seniors to come out of their comfort zone and try new forms of physical activity. The seniors also bonded while interacting in groups through the meaningful games.

Integrating Studies with Service The Diploma in Health Management & Promotion (DHMP) students have been taking every opportunity to spread the message of health in the community. Taking their knowledge to residents in Sengkang West and Ang Mo Kio, a group ran a booth at Karnival Aidilfitri 2019 to assess the functional flexibility of the residents. Their Y-Balance Test helped participants to learn more about their flexibility and balance, with the students advising them on their risk of falls based on the results.

At the Ang Mo Kio Constituency’s Active Ageing Carnival, about 3000 elderly residents were drawn to an exhibit booth manned by 10 DHMP students. At the booth, participants were able to test their blood pressure, grip strength, muscular endurance, body composition, posture and balance. The unique health screens were a hit, and drew even Guest-of-Honour Minister Gan Thiam Poh (who recorded a fairly healthy result). For the students, it had been a meaningful experience to be able to tap on their skills for this event.
