ACHIEVEMENTS SMC students thrive on creative challenges and embrace any opportunity to showcase their skills and make their mark on the national and global stage. These are some examples of our students’ impressive achievements.

Bloomberg Polytechnic Challenge 2018 Organised by Bloomberg LLP, the Bloomberg Polytechnic Challenge involves student competitors from local polytechnics. Thirty polytechnic students were chosen from online entries to take part in the stock pitch challenge. These students went through a crash course in stock pitching and presented to a panel of judges from Bloomberg on 8 June 2018. During the stock pitch challenge, the students were tested on their ability to form and present rational arguments. A group of five students were eventually selected as winners of the Challenge. Two of these winners were students from Diploma in Social Enterprise Management (now known as Diploma in Business) and Diploma in Mass Communication respectively.
FedEx Express/JA International Trade Challenge (ITC) 2018 Armed with their interest and knowledge of international business, a team of students from RP’s Diploma in Social Enterprise Management (now known as Diploma in Business) led by senior lecturer Mr Danny Lee took part in the FedEx Express/JA International Trade Challenge (ITC) where they emerged winners in the regional round. To prepare for the competition, the students researched and synthesised detailed information related to a specific country to gain a greater understanding of international trade. The team impressed the judges with their business idea of a modular energy storage device that would provide a portable source of electrical energy. As champions, they also had the opportunity to represent Singapore in the ITC Asia Pacific Finals.
SHRI HR Hackathon 2019 Our students from the Diploma in Human Resource Management with Psychology (DHRMP) programme emerged as first runner-up in the “Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI) Hackathon 2019 – Future of Work Designed by Future Workforce” competition. A total of 17 teams from local polytechnics and ITE participated in the competition, where the students had to work on either a recruitment or an on-boarding topic with their assigned corporate partner. The winning DHRMP team, who were mentored by Yeo Hiap Seng (Yeo’s) Group Head of HR, Ms Angelina Chua, was tasked to create the ultimate talent experience that every prospective employee would enjoy. They impressed the judges with their mobile app solution that enabled innovative and impactful outreach at any time and place.
Singapore Cancer Society Inter-Polytechnic Competition 2019 Three teams of DMC students took part in the Singapore Cancer Society Inter-Polytechnic Competition 2019. This annual competition encourages tertiary students to hone their skills in using creative techniques and ideas to convey key messages about cancer in Singapore.
SIGNATURE EVENTS The Media Challenge The Diploma in Management Communication (DMC) not only fuels the passion of our students, it also reaches out to inspire their juniors in secondary schools around Singapore. Hosting The Media Challenge (TMC) every year since 2012, DMC has brought the fields of Social Media, Marketing, Advertising, Photography and Videography to life for hundreds of teens. Working around themes like 2018’s ‘Social Media: A Force for Positive Change’, participating teams created and pitched media packages in the much-anticipated competition. TMC is judged by educators from DMC as well as external experts from the communications industry.
08
The students were tasked to propose a campaign to discourage Singaporeans from smoking. One team was selected to represent RP at the finals held on 26 January 2019, going up against the other tertiary institutions in Singapore. With their proposal titled #NoCigarettesNoRegrets, this team of four clinched top place. They went on to work closely with Singapore Cancer Society to see their campaign idea come to life in May 2019, in conjunction with World No Tobacco Day.
BEYOND BORDERS Enjoy a holistic learning journey at SMC — one where you’ll gain a good mix of experiences to spice up your academic activities. Amongst the highlights are our Student Overseas Trips (SOT), which promise to broaden your horizons with meaningful cross-cultural exchanges with your peers around the world.
09
A Lot of Learning and a Lotte Fun It was a valuable learning opportunity for the Diploma in Consumer Behaviour & Research students who were at the five-day SOT in Korea. The trip which occurred in March 2019 provided the students with marketing and consumer insights from Korean-based industrial titans, Hyundai, Samsung and Kia. The students also had the opportunity to visit the Singapore Tourism Board in Korea, where they picked up tips on how Singapore is marketed as a compelling tourist destination to the locals. In between, the students also conducted research on the interests of Korean youths, particularly in the areas of tourism and social media. Fortunately, it was not all work and no play, as visits to historical and leisure sites were part of the tour. From Bukchon Hanok village to Lotte World, the students enjoyed themselves enough to remember for a lifetime.
Exploring China’s Start-up Ecosystem Zhejiang University in Hangzhou is renowned for its culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, as much as it is for the number of business start-ups it spins off. Thus, for the 24 Diploma in Business & Social Enterprise (now known as Diploma in Business) students who visited in March 2019, it was almost a mecca of inspiration. The third-year undergraduates they met shared unreservedly about their motivations and views on student entrepreneurship in China, giving our RP team a fresh perspective. The six-day trip here and to Shanghai also included visits to tech-focused companies Yunqi Partners and Ku Jia Le, where the students enjoyed live demonstrations of their latest innovations and technology.
International Perspectives from Sydney to Seoul Two groups of students from the Diploma in Human Resource Management with Psychology (DHRMP) had the opportunity to meet their peers from other countries. In March 2018, the first group of 25 students embarked on their trip to Sydney, while the next group of 45 students went up to Seoul seven months later. Besides getting acquainted with their contemporaries from the Universities of those cities, the DHRMP teams had the opportunity to survey human resource management practices of leading businesses like PricewaterhouseCoopers, Hyundai and Amore Pacific. Our students appreciated both the cultural exchange and the networking opportunities these trips provided.
10
Gaining Insights of the Media Landscape in Hong Kong Keeping abreast with international developments in the creative industry is important and our Diploma in Mass Communication (DMC) students have benefitted from relevant learning trips. In September 2018, a group of 28 DMC students and two lecturers went to trend-setting Hong Kong for an inside look at the media and communications landscape there.
Their five days there was a whirlwind of exciting visits, from social media giant Facebook, PR and advertising agency Ogilvy and news publisher South China Morning Post, to Disneyland’s marketing division and the Hong Kong Baptist University. An enviable opportunity, indeed, for the students.

Empowering Vulnerable Media Users Our Diploma in Business & Social Enterprise (now known as Diploma in Business) students have taken on the role of digital ambassadors, launching their own programmes to help the public understand cyber security, cautious use of social media platforms and how to discern fake news. Their initiatives, the #YouthEmpowered Digital Programme targeting young people, and the Intergenerational Digital Literacy Programme for seniors, are both supported by the Media Literacy Council.
Creating New Ideas for Nestlé Singapore A huge effort by some 1,800 students who were taking the B216 Marketing module at SMC reaped some novel ideas for Nestlé Singapore. The collaboration gave our students an authentic challenge to increase consumption of its household beverages amongst youths, and the students rose to the occasion with a diverse range of creative marketing and promotion plans. Nestlé was very impressed with the students’ endeavours and awarded prizes for the top five marketing plans as well as the three best memes.

We had two interns from SMC in my company previously and they had been a source of joy. I would rank them very highly amongst the interns we have had in our company. The SMC interns were curious to learn and could take on menial tasks with dignity. At the same time, they were able to accept criticism positively. Their excellent problem-solving skills and hands-on approach to work were admirable. All leaders of organisations will agree that these qualities are important yet increasingly rare today.
