A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN AVIATION MANAGEMENT STUDENT! We trail Vaisnavi D/O Subramaniam around campus to find out what goes on in class for an Aviation Management student at RP School of Engineering.

9:00am

After we settle down, our lecturer Mr Kwek begins the lesson with a short recap of what we had learnt during our previous lesson.

I love arriving early for school; it gives me time to get ready to take on what’s in store for me today!

9:30am – 10:00am

Next, we dive into the worksheet questions for today’s lesson which is on the markings, signs and lightings on the runway.

“Clearway, stopway, threshold, aborted take-off… what else did we learn?”

9:15am – 9:30am

I really enjoy how Mr Kwek shares interesting stories and facts with us. We’re now heading to The ARCH (The Aerospace Hub) to experience the newest aerodrome facility!

10:00am – 11:00am 11:00am – 11:30am

YES! We’re finally here! The Virtual Aerodrome Lab, which is built specially for Aviation Management students, is a state-of-the-art facility. Here, we get to experience what it is like to be a real air traffic controller. So cool!

Discover 02

This facility makes learning so much easier! I now fully understand how the elements on the runway look like and what they're used for.

11:30am – 12:00pm

Next up, we head to the airport runway model which has been designed just like Changi Airport’s runway. Here, we understand the different signage, such as location and mandatory instruction signs.

Oh wow, I didn’t know that the runways of Changi Airport are parallel to the main roads that lead to the airport!

Lunch time! I’ve been craving for the yummy food from the Mixed Veg Rice at Koufu for so long! I love how they always have so many options.

When Mr Kwek arrives in class, he gives us our next task, which is to draw and conceptualise the runway for an airport on a piece of mahjong paper in 60 minutes!

1:15pm – 2:00pm Back in class, we wrap up our worksheet and anxiously wait for what Mr Kwek has in store for us next.

12:15pm – 1:15pm 2:00pm – 3:00pm

With only an hour to do up the runway layout, my team and I start immediately. We begin by discussing the runway markings and systems we want to incorporate in our design.

Finally, it's down to the last team to present. Today's lesson was so insightful and interesting. Can't wait for next week's lesson!

3:00pm – 3:30pm

Time for our presentation. We hope we've done a good job!

After completing my Reflection Journal and quiz on the online portal, it’s time to head home! Bye!

3:30pm – 4:00pm

What's PBL? Vaisnavi D/O Subramaniam Diploma in Aviation Management School of Engineering Year 2

RP offers a holistic educational experience through various innovative teaching approaches, leveraging the fundamentals of Problem-based Learning (PBL). Guided by trained lecturers, students work in teams to solve problems and present viable solutions to the class. With class sizes kept small, RP lecturers guide you to solve problems, overcome challenges, and enable you to experience working in a team. Such PBL sessions provide immense value as you would be well-prepared to take on the real working world.

The Aspiring Singapore Girl

“Ever since I was a little girl, I have always dreamt of being an air stewardess for Singapore Airlines!” exclaims Vaisnavi. Like many others, Vaisnavi thought hard about what could help her be a step closer to her dream career, and without a doubt, RP was her answer. “I chose to pursue this diploma because it gives me a holistic knowledge about aircrafts, which will be very handy for me when I become a cabin crew,” she adds. A high-spirited individual, the Year 2 student promises to put in all her effort to fulfil her dream. “As Eddie Rickenbacker once said, ‘Aviation is proof that given the will, we have the capacity to achieve the impossible,’ and together with RP’s guidance, I am determined to fully unleash my potential.” How has your experience been as a RP student? It has been a very inspiring two years so far. Being an RP student has allowed me to be exposed to many situations and people that have changed me for the better. I am very proud to be part of the RP family. What do you enjoy most about the PBL system? RP’s PBL system has showed me that teamwork makes the dream work. I enjoy the ‘problems’ I have to solve each day and how the system teaches me to adapt to all kinds of working environment.

PBL Workshops for Secondary School Students

Led by RP’s own student facilitators, the two-hour workshops held at RP will give secondary school students a taste of RP’s unique learning process. These exciting workshops are absolutely free, so come and experience RP today! To find out more, visit www.rp.edu.sg/ learning_journeys.aspx

About the E373 Airside Operations and Air Traffic Management Module This module enables students to understand the fundamentals of airside operations and its importance to air traffic control. Topics covered in Airside Operations include aerodrome layout, management of wildlife, airfield lightings and markings, and movement of vehicles in the airside; while Air Traffic Management includes topics such as radiotelephony phraseology, airspace orientation, and equipment handling at Air Traffic Control Towers.

Daniel Kwek Lecturer School of Engineering

Daniel's love affair with aviation started many years ago, when he was still a student. Over the eight years in the industry, the Diploma in Aviation Management lecturer has gone on to work for three big aviation companies, namely the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), SATS, and Changi Airport Group. When asked what advice he would give potential RP students, Mr Kwek says, “In RP, we do not give away an air ticket to you to experience a free flight in life. Instead, we equip you with the skills to build an aircraft so as to experience unlimited free flights throughout our lives. Choose RP if you wish to soar!” How would you describe RP’s aviation courses? Our aviation courses are unique because we incorporate a high level of practical work, whereby students are exposed to numerous concepts and theories in the hangar, A320 Flight Simulator and other aviation workshops. Our newest laboratory is the Virtual Aerodrome Laboratory where students get to take on the roles of pilots and air traffic controllers.

Discover 04

Why are RP students different from the rest? RP trains students to be industry-ready. For instance, in the Diploma in Aviation Management, students are required to gain relevant work experience for 20 weeks as interns in Singapore Youth Flying Club, Changi Airport Group, CAAS, Jetstar, SATS, dnata, and many others. Applying what they have learnt in RP, these students find this experience much more relevant, and these exposure enables them to be more ‘desirable’ as a future job candidate.

“I love RP because…people here are so fun loving. BEYOND BORDERS Learning goes beyond the classroom here in RP. Check out the cool places our students have travelled to for service learning, exchange programmes, as well as internships! WHERE: Seoul, Korea For two weeks…we had the opportunity to visit Seoul for five days! There, we visited Innocean Worldwide which is the second largest advertising company in Korea and the primary innovative brain behind most of the Hyundai Ads. We also had the opportunity to visit Korea's largest beauty cosmetic company Amore Pacific and popped by Samsung D'Light at Gangnam to learn more about their marketing strategies. The “OMG” moment of the trip…was when we visited the Hyundai Plant and learned that they produce cars at an astonishing rate of 1,200 per day! It felt rather surreal because we got to take a look at their car making process up close; and the way the machine operates reminded me of scenes from the movie Transformers! This trip…has encouraged us to be more outspoken as we had to interact with people who spoke a different language. I guess the trip has also broaden our perspective and diversified our knowledge of Korea.

What I miss most about the trip…was roaming the streets of Dongdaemun during our free time! It was such a wonderful moment because we stayed out all the way till sunrise and stumbled upon this place with sakuras blooming all over!

WHERE: Siem Reap, Cambodia For two weeks…I stayed in Siem Reap for my servicelearning trip. The purpose of our trip was to help a local village school to build a better learning environment and to also give the children there some clothes, bags, and shoes that we received from the donation wall in RP. Some of the activities I participated in…included painting the walls and replacing the windows of the local village school. I also had the chance to teach the students of the school basic English.

Oh Qian Ling Diploma in Industrial and Operations Management School of Engineering Year 3

The highlight of my trip…was when I went for a Beatocello Performance at the Jayarvarman Hospital. The performance was by Beat Richner, who is a Cello player and also a doctor in the Jayarvarman Hospital. It was an eye-opening experience because he used music to express both the sadness and happiness of the patients in the hospital. What I liked best about Siem Reap…were the historic temples and the local village schools because of the humble students and teachers and how they make me appreciate what I have.

WHERE: Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom My internship at Queen's University Belfast (QUB)…lasted for 13 weeks. There are a few divisions under QUB and I was attached to the Centre of Cancer Research and Cell Biology (CCRCB) for my internship. I was supervised by Dr Karen McCloskey and was assigned a project to conduct a series of experiment on “Ion Channels in Ovarian Cancer Cells”. An eye opening experience of the internship…was discovering the warmness and friendliness of the people in Belfast. Whenever I had a doubt, my colleagues were always so accommodating and helpful. Not only my colleagues, even the people on the roads were just as nice and approachable!

Chan Shu Jun Diploma in ATLANTICBiomedical Sciences School of Applied Science Year 3

During my internship at CCRCB…I got to access their laboratories which are totally different from RP laboratories! There is a tissue culture room, specially designed for tissue or virus culturing, a dark room for immunofluorescence, and a cold room for storage of cell samples! The best moment of the trip…was getting close to the other Singaporean interns there. We did everything together, such as watching movies, cooking dinners, shopping, and most importantly, travelling around Northern Ireland and Dublin. During a week-long holiday, I travelled to London and Paris too. Besides learning, this overseas internship also brought me a lot of unforgettable memories.

WHERE: Phuket, Thailand My internship with IndoChine Resorts & Villas, Phuket…began with spending three months with IndoChine – SuperTree @ Gardens by the Bay before flying over to Phuket, Thailand to be at IndoChine – Resorts & Villas for the remaining three months. While I was in Phuket, I was involved in restaurant service operations and also managed to experience sending room service orders to our in-house guests’ rooms. I would describe my internship experience there as a holistic experience as I managed to be part of the Front-of-House as well as Back-of-House operations.

Mohamed Azmi Bin Mohamed Idris Diploma in Hotel and Hospitality Management School of Hospitality Year 3

The things I learned in RP…were applicable to my internship! From the soft to the practical skills, as well as the theories that were taught in RP, I could apply them all. I chose to apply for an overseas internship…to experience the hospitality industry out of Singapore. After all, the hospitality industry that I am in is universal and applicable almost anywhere. It is also said that hospitality is influenced by local culture, as such, it made me curious on how different it is from Singapore. To represent RP overseas… is an honour. I’m very glad to be able to represent the school for this overseas internship programme. My personal goal was to make a beautiful name for RP regardless of the company I was posted to and I am glad to say that I have done that.

WHERE: Bintan, Indonesia During my four-month internship at MediaCorp Chinese Entertainment Productions…I was exposed to a variety of programmes and even had the opportunity to take up a variety of roles in a production team for the shows. I was involved in variety shows such as Project Superstar 2014 as the cameraman and even went to Bintan for filming! In Bintan…I took up a dual role of an assistant producer and camera assistant. The plan was to complete the filming of an episode within a day, resulting in 12-hour shoots over the two days. RP prepared me for the internship well…by equipping me with the right attitude to operate in a production team. The modules taught in school provided me with the necessary technical skills of using different shooting equipment. Through the internship…I’ve learnt that production is teamwork. Thanks to the internship, I now aim to work towards attaining more knowledge and skills to take up a more directive roles in future.

WHERE: Malang, Indonesia For the Student Overseas Trip…we went to Malang, Indonesia for nine days as part of our TF Scale Outbound Programme. The whole nine days was really an experience to remember. One of the experiences specifically worth mentioning was the visit to the ‘School of the Disabled’. It was there where we got to hear stories of the disabled students and witness how they spend their time in school. RP’s Student Overseas Trip…definitely enhanced my learning and opened my eyes to a whole new environment. I’ve never been to a country like Indonesia before. So to me, experiencing the culture and socialising with the people there was refreshing. As the leader of the trip…I was constantly challenged with tasks and unexpected issues. However, my team mates and I knew that there was only one way to solve our issues – through PBL of course!

Yap Lik Hock Diploma in New Media (Now known as Diploma in Media Production and Design) School of Technology For The Arts Year 3

The best moment of the entire trip…was bonding with the Indonesian students and visiting the orphanage. Even freezing ourselves at the top of Mount Bromo just to see the sunrise really early in the morning without sleep is something that I’ll remember.

WHERE: Victoria, Australia Somers School Camp Australia…is one of the overseas internship options for Year 3 students in the Diploma in Outdoor Adventure Learning. It involves working with children from various parts of Victoria.

Karmelia Binte Jubri Diploma in Outdoor Adventure Learning School of Sports, Health and Leisure 2014 Graduate

Adapting to a new environment…was hard as I was there for three months but as soon as I settled down as one of the staff, it felt like home. The camp runs on a nine-day camp programme, with the children being exposed to different activities such as archery and the famous Somers Camp Challenge swing which is about 18.5m high! This allowed me to learn how to live out of my comfort zone. T he internship has enhanced my learning…in ways I could not have imagined! It taught me more than what i was expected. I met people who were doing their PHDs in outdoor education in Victoria, went to different camps Bogong and Woorabinda, and got to understand the outdoor industry better. SHL had prepared me for the internship…very well! I must thank my lecturers who guided me through the modules and RP's PBL for moulding me into a proactive team player.

GRAD YOU MADE IT! This issue, we walk down memory lane with a bunch of our graduates who are making waves in the industry.

Amanda Lee Gui Ping Diploma in Communication and Information Design (Now known as Diploma in Mass Communication) Centre for Enterprise and Communication 2012 Graduate

Hot off the Press A news desk reporter with MediaCorp’s TODAY newspaper, Amanda is exposed to various beats and gets many opportunities to cover stories relating to education, court/crime, community/ social, health, transport, housing, politics, environment, and manpower. On what's the most fun part of her job as a journalist, the 2012 graduate says, “I get to cover a diverse range of stories. Some of the trials I’ve covered include the NUS law professor Tey Tsun Hang corruption case and the Little India Committee of Inquiry.” As part of her job, Amanda also gets to meet ministers and Members of Parliament during

events and interview people from all walks of life including teachers and doctors. While she has tight deadlines to meet every day, Amanda seems to enjoy the ride and wishes to do international and war reporting in future. How has the PBL system benefited you? Under the PBL system, I had to present the solutions to the lecturer at the end of the day. During this time, I learnt how to work with my team mates and solve the “problem”. As I got to work under tight deadlines in RP, I am not taken aback by the deadlines that I need to meet in the newsroom. The PBL system has also helped me in many ways to progress as a student and person.

A Stroke of Genius Currently a senior cosmetologist in the Entertainment department, and Creative Costuming division at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS), Saifuddeen’s interest in hair and makeup began when he became a freelance makeup artist to build up his portfolio while still in RP. Luck was definitely on the STA alumnus’ side as he took the first step into his career when he was posted to Universal Studios Singapore (USS) as a dresser for his internship. “Thanks to the opportunity RP provided me to intern at USS, I learnt all about costuming management, and proper dressing of animated characters and performers on live-shows there.” At RWS, Saifuddeen has worked on several shows and events such as Halloween Horror Nights and on resident and touring theatrical productions like the Addams Family musical, Rock of Ages, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. When asked about his future plans, the makeup maestro said, “I hope to work on

Thank you, RP! I would like to thank RP for the lovely campus, which is equipped with good facilities, the kind people (friends and lecturers) that made a difference in my life, and the interesting learning journey I experienced as an RP student. To sum it up, I would say that my three-year stint in RP has been a unique and enjoyable one.

Unique Learning at RP “When we learnt that I had gotten into the diploma programme of my choice successfully, my family and I were delighted as being a journalist has always been my childhood ambition and I knew that RP could help me fulfil it.

RP’s PBL pedagogy is truly something unique and not offered in the other local polytechnics. In our daily lessons, we are given the chance to try our hands at solving problem scenarios based in realistic work environments. In my three years here, my lecturers have been very dedicated in imparting their knowledge to us. Although PBL encourages self-directed learning, they have always been there when we need them, guiding us along the way. Here, I have learnt to be independent, inquisitive, and resourceful by taking charge of my studies. Simply put, my journey in RP has been nothing short of amazing.”

RP Brings Out Your Potential

“I find that RP’s PBL has indeed exposed Harith to a whole new way of learning that is both interesting and exciting. The students are encouraged to be seen and heard during their lessons, and to take control of their education. The education at RP has benefitted Harith greatly as I realise he has grown to be more outspoken through his active involvement in learning and participation in team work required of the curriculum. He has gained valuable experience. Harith's time here at RP, particularly in his diploma programme, has opened him up to a new spectrum of discovery and possibility. This has been made possible with the fantastic support from his lecturers, who are very warm and passionate about the work they are doing. It has been such a refreshing experience here because of them and we truly appreciate their dedicated contributions.”

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT For these lecturers, RP was their top choice when choosing an institution to teach at and they’ve never looked back ever since.

Experience Galore

Prior to RP, I was with StarHub for almost five years. I was with their technical support team handling primarily Internet services for both corporate and consumer. This was where the ability to engage and communicate with customers effectively was crucial. Before that, I was with Parkway Healthcare Group in their IT department as a security administrator for two years.

Open to Ideas

What I enjoy most about RP is how the management is open to ideas and always supports the drive to engage industry to ensure relevance of our curriculum, projects, and sponsorship for our students. With this support, we have been successful in making our mark in the industry and have even had tie-ups with external parties to provide real-world projects that our students can work on.

RP, My Choice

I had actually thought of making a career switch to teaching at different points of my career. Once my mind was set, I chose RP as it was new and the faculty was looking for skill sets and experiences that were right up my alley. I felt I could contribute further on top of the standard lessons by sharing my experiences and knowledge. “Mr Chris was not only my lecturer but also my mentor for my internship. I recall how he used to always make frequent visits to ensure I was coping well at work. I am really grateful to have had a kind-hearted lecturer like him. Now whenever I think of my three years of studies in RP, his smiling face always comes to mind.” Sean Cheng Yong Han Diploma in Customer Relationship and Service Management 2012 Graduate

Why RP?

I’ve been lucky to have been able to build a career around my love of filmmaking, writing, and storytelling, and I've always hoped to share that passion with students. Once I decided to take the plunge into teaching, I knew RP was the ideal choice as I had heard a lot about the enthusiasm of the students. I was excited to be part of a fresh and exciting school, and teaching a dynamic and innovative course.

Blast from the Past!

I started out as a producer with a local production house, working on programmes for National Geographic and MediaCorp. I also had a three-year stint with MTV Asia as a producer, writer, and director before embarking on a career as a freelance television writer and director in 2007. During that time, I wrote for television series such as The Pupil and Calefare, while also co-creating and writing various drama series,

sitcoms, telemovies, and documentaries for okto and Channel NewsAsia.

Students Should Join RP Because...

RP is the place to be! Rah-rah enthusiasm aside, RP boasts a passionate student body whose energy is infectious and a faculty that sets a high bar for academic excellence. We believe in giving our students the tools to realise their potential, while providing a fun yet holistic scholastic journey. “Mr Tan was my final year project adviser in my final year in RP. He has a cool and stable teaching style, and always gives the best advice. Mr Tan made me understand what the industry is like even before I graduated and still checks on how I’m doing in my career today. To me, he is one lecturer that I will always respect.” Chong Hui Qi Vicky Diploma in New Media (now known as Diploma in Media Production and Design) 2013 Graduate
