Learning THROUGH SERVICE SOI Eco-Warriors Collected Over 600kg of E-Waste
11
Trooping through the heartlands on a recovery mission, close to 100 eco-warriors from SOI combed 45 HDB blocks in Woodlands on 15 March 2019 for electronic waste. Covering more than 2,000 units, our volunteers collected some 643kg worth of computers, printers, mobile devices, fitness machines and other electronic items. SOI’s e-waste collection initiative caught the attention of Mr Ong Teng Koon, Grassroots Advisor for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, who commended the project.
Touching Hearts and Minds Our SOI staff member Lydia Hamid was involved in an RP inter-school collaborative project to support mental health. Jointly developed by three RP Schools (School of Infocomm, School of Sports, Health and Leisure and School of Management and Communication), the ‘Himawari Wellness’ mobile application was launched at the Singapore Mental Health Conference on 30 January 2019. The event was graced by President Halimah Yacob who tried the app at the RP booth. Using smart technology, the app helps users to monitor their appetite, mood, sleep quality and intake of medicine.

Achievements
Proving Their Business Chops A team of five students studying the Diploma in Business Applications (now known as Diploma in Financial Technology) did SOI proud at the 5th MonsoonSIM Enterprise Resource Management Competition. The team proved their capabilities and beat competitors from other local institutions and universities. They were crowned the champion title for being the most successful team in running a virtual company.
Starting Up with Excellence RP recently forged new ties with Kosen, the National Institute of Technology, Japan, through an inaugural KOSEN-Joint Polytechnic Start-Up Programme. Andrew Ong (from Diploma in Information Technology, DIT), Daniel Poh (DIT) and Darius Boey (Diploma in Mass Communication of RP School of Management and Communication) participated in the programme with students from other local polytechnics and National Institute of Technology, Japan. The student exchange took place in Singapore in September 2018 and in Japan in March 2019. In each leg, the students came up with projects that benefit society, which were then evaluated based on the value of the prototype, business development solution and presentation. Our RP representatives worked well with their new friends, and were awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the programme.
DIT Team Clinched Grand Champion Title in FinTech Hackathon Competition Our students from the Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) emerged as the Grand Champion in the recent PolyFintech100 API Hackathon competition. Some 40 teams from the five local polytechnics participated in the competition that seeks to nurture Financial Technology (FinTech) talents to meet the rapidly-changing needs of the financial services sector. In July 2019, the same DIT team had also won the Most Sustainable Social Innovation Award in an earlier round of the competition. The winning DIT team bonded over countless hours of hard work and pushed forward with a common goal to come up with an IT solution that would benefit St Luke’s Eldercare. Through the competition, the team developed invaluable traits such as being proactive and taking initiative.
