The Sailing Museum opens its doors May 10, 2022 to the anticipation of sailors and non-sailors alike. It is housed in the heart of Newport, in the restored armory, which was once used as a launching point for sailors and a place for the press that covered them. ummer vacations were once an annual tradition for millions of families across the globe. Warm weather getaways to idyllic beaches and welcoming resorts have long helped families make lasting memories, and revisiting that trend can be good for everyone. Family vacation plans were put on the back burner during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a survey from IPX 1031®, 40 percent of respondents canceled vacation plans during the pandemic, while an additional 29 percent didn’t plan a vacation at all. But the pandemic alone cannot be blamed for people’s unwillingness to take time off from work, as pre-pandemic studies noted how professionals had increasingly begun to work longer hours and take fewer vacation days. For example, data from the U.S. Travel Association indicates that American workers failed to use 768 million vacation days in 2018. Pandemic-related cancellations and postponements proved a bitter pill to swallow, and that sour taste could be one reason why travel bounced back in a big way in 2021. The hotel market data firm STR, Inc. reported that hotel occupancy reached nearly 70 percent in July 2021. That’s no doubt due to the successful rollout of coronavirus vaccines. This summer could be even better for the travel and tourism industry, as children as young as five are now eligible to be vaccinated, and there’s hope that children younger than five will be soon. That means more families will likely be on the lookout for vacation spots, and the following are some qualities they can look for as they search for the perfect place to spend their summer vacations.
AFFORDABILITY:
Travel costs have spiked in the aftermath of the pandemic, and that may stretch families’ budgets thin. Data from the energy and commodities information provider S&P Global Platts indicates that jet fuel prices have been
THE REPUBLICAN | MASSLIVE.COM
rising somewhat steadily since mid-2020, and that spike could lead to higher airfare costs this summer. In addition, families should compare the cost of hotel lodging versus single-family homes on sites such as Airbnb or Vrbo. The latter might have more budget-friendly inventory.
ACCESSIBILITY:
Families won’t want to travel only to find out local attractions are closed or open on a more limited basis. Before booking a trip, confirm the rules and regulations in a given locale and contact local tourist attractions, such as theme parks, to confirm that they’ll be open for business as usual this summer.
KID-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES:
After more than two years locked up at home, parents may be dreaming of spending a week doing little more than sitting on a beach. However, kids may grow antsy after a day or so with their toes in the sand. Many allinclusive resorts include kid-friendly activities, such as sailing lessons or arts and crafts sessions, that give moms and dads a break and keep youngsters engaged in a fun way.
DINING:
Research local restaurants when perusing destinations to confirm there’s plenty of dining options. Parents have done more than their fair share of cooking at home since the onset of the pandemic, so a great vacation spot is one that includes an array of dining options to give parents time off from cooking detail. As families prepare for their first vacations in more than two years this summer, parents can look for locales that cater to their needs without breaking the bank.

Warm weather and generally dry conditions are one reason why summer is so popular among vacationers. Even individuals who can’t get away on vacation this summer can still look to the weekend as a great time to hit the road or the friendly skies for weekend getaways. Convenience and proximity are two selling points when choosing weekend getaway destinations. The following are some weekend getaway ideas that are tailor-made for summer fun.

The pandemic forced millions of baseball fans to stay home as their favorite team battled it out on the diamond. No fans were allowed during the shortened 2020 season, and the 2021 season began with many teams allowing only limited attendance. Some fans might not have felt comfortable returning to packed stadiums last summer. Now that attendance restrictions have been lifted, what better way to enjoy America’s pastime than in person? Take a weekend to follow your favorite team on the road or visit a stadium you’ve never been to. Many ballparks are now surrounded by great restaurants and five-star hotels, making a ballpark trip an ideal way to experience a new city in style.
· MAKE IT A WATER-BASED WEEKEND No matter where you live, a body of water is no doubt nearby.
Though the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicates that roughly 40 percent of the United States population lives in a coastal region, oceans aren’t the only places to find some sand and enjoy a warm summer breeze. Lakes and rivers are great places to relax, and getaway seekers can utilize sites like Airbnb and Vrbo to find short-term waterfront rentals.
· SOAK UP THE CITY LIGHTS
Big cities tend to clear out on summer weekends, which can make this an ideal time to visit. City visitors won’t have to contend with the sizable crowds that descend on metropolises in winter, when indoor entertainment is in high demand. That means savvy travelers also may find discounts on live theater and local concerts. It also won’t be as difficult to book reservations at the latest culinary hotspots, particularly for travelers who book early.
· HIT THE SLOPES (SERIOUSLY)
Skiing might be the furthest thing on people’s minds in summer. However, skiing hotspots can make for the ideal summer getaways for individuals looking for a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Instead of traversing slopes on skis, visitors can hike their way through the mountains before retiring to their resort for a more laid back evening of relaxation.
There’s no wrong way to get away. Summer travelers who don’t have much time to escape can look to some unique weekend getaway ideas and enjoy a relaxing taste of something new.

SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN
The Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, area has bounced back after the height of the pandemic “like a rubber band,” and “places are coming back to life and acting normal,” said Denise Brown, a graphic designer and marketing director for Hampton Beach Village District, and also owns Ad-cetera Graphics in Portsmouth, NH. She has lived in the Hampton Beach area all her life and particularly appreciates the ocean views, the salt air, the many great restaurants and shops, the artists and entertainment, and the friendly, casual living. Spring and summer are great times to visit and walk along the beautiful beaches, admire the magnificent sunrises and sunsets, dine out, enjoy comfortable weather and take in some of the many
entertainment, music and performance events. “Hampton Beach is easy to drive to and offers clean fresh air, a long beautiful sandy beach, super seafood and plenty of lodging if you book early, and plenty of family fun,” Brown said. New for visitors this year will be yoga on the beach and a variety of new bands on the Seashell Stage. Among the spring/summer offerings will be the annual Sand Sculpting Classic in June where professional sculptors from throughout the world compete for $25,000 cash prizes. There will even be sand sculpting lessons. Besides the more than 80 free concerts throughout the summer on the Seashell Stage, July events include Miss Hampton Beach Contest and the 3-day Country Music Fest with country line dancing lessons before the show.

August entertainment includes the annual Talent Competition and Children’s Week, which ends with a mile-long parade of kids in their costumes. September continues the memories with the annual Seafood Festival to taste every type of local seafood imaginable, plus vendor booths for shopping and souvenirs, along with music and beach fun during this 3-day weekend. Throughout the summer, there are 17 nights of spectacular fireworks that light up the sky. September also brings the Boston Circus Guild’s ‘Cirque du Hampton Beach’ to the Seashell Stage. They return a couple weeks later with a Fire Show on the sand that will wow the crowd with “dare-devil, fully choreographed displays,” Brown said. Among the popular places to see and things to do are Club Casino Ballroom big act shows, whale watching, deep-sea fishing, great music at the Seashell Stage, fried dough, dining with ocean views, fun bars, and boulevard shopping.
Several golf courses are within half an hour of the beach. The year-round population of Hampton is 2,375, but the beach attracts crowds during the summer weekends. What draws them? Brown notes the free entertainment all summer paid for by the Hampton Beach Village District residents, great seafood and a big variety of dining establishments, a nice selection of accommodations, boating, kid’s playground, miniature golf, free Monday Night Movies on the Beach for families, handicapped accessible wheelchairs that can be used on the sand, ample clean restrooms, fun bargain shopping, a great boulevard and wide sidewalks to stroll along, outdoor showers to rinse the sand off your feet, lots of benches to stop and sit and watch the ocean and people, and breath the clean, salt air. You can watch two live beach cams on the website, www.hamptonbeach. org. “Usually there is a light breeze to cool you off or you can jump in the water for a quick refreshing dip,” she added.

inally, it’s summer, the season we wait all year for; the long hot afternoons spent lounging by the lake – or pool – and going in search of adventure. When school’s out for the summer, the Catskills offer a cool retreat that packs a lot – or a little – into every day! Located a few hours’ drive from New York City and Boston, the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County provide that summer camp feeling without the morning salute. The Great Northern Catskills is home to three diverse regions: the River Region, Mountain Region, and Valley Region. you’re looking for a more relaxed “lazy river lounging” kind of getaway, Greene County delivers. The River Region in Greene County runs along the mighty Hudson River and its tributary, the Catskill Creek. Boating and paddling offer a family friendly activity in the warmer months, but if you truly want a unique perspective, the Hudson River Skywalk is a must. This pedestrian path connects the village of Catskill to Hudson on the opposite shore. Walk over the water and experience panoramic views of the majestic Catskill Mountains. Nearby, Bailiwick Ranch and Animal Park is home to tigers, alligators, llamas, and more. So much more. Go for a horseback trail ride, play paintball,

or book a night in a canvas-covered, cowboy-inspired wagon and feel like you’re at home on the range. The Mountain Region of the Great Northern Catskills is synonymous with adventure sports. From hiking in the Catskill Park, to year-round recreation opportunities at two alpine ski resorts, the mountains are calling, and you must go! At Hunter Mountain, the New York Zipline Canopy Tours boasts the longest, fastest, and highest zipline canopy tour in North America. Soar 600 feet off the ground at speeds of 50 mph as you make your way down the mountain, zipline by zipline. For a thrilling mountain biking adventure, the Windham Mountain Bike Park offers lift-serviced downhill trails, including the longest jump trail on the East Coast. The Valley Region of Greene County is a paradise, often referred to as the “Emerald Isle of the Catskills,” for its Irish heritage, cultural centers, and rolling green hills. An on-site beer garden serves up local brews and drinks. One thing the Great Northern Catskills are synonymous with is all-inclusive family resort vacations. Places like Sunny Hill Resort and Gavin’s Resort and Country Inn offer a unique, packaged vacation that includes meals, activities, and accommodations. Bellantoni suggests sampling Saratoga’s unique, natural mineral springs or enjoying a mineral bath at the Roosevelt Baths and Spa. Or, discover Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs for an unparalleled, intimate concert experience. Currently the Capital Region’s #1 listening room, Caffe Lena is also a “National Music Treasure” known throughout the world. For 62 years, friends and families have come to Lena’s to get close to the legends and the exciting newcomers and to join a crowd that’s there for the songs. It features folk, blues, bluegrass, jazz and global music. Among the historical attractions are Grant Cottage where Ulysses S. Grant wrote/finished his memoir days before he died and the New York State Military Museum. In the village of Stillwater in Saratoga County, visitors will find an unusual monument: The “Boot Monument” is dedicated to Benedict Arnold, who led Americans to victory in the Battle of
Saratoga but later became a traitor to the United States. History, recreation like golf courses, culture, small business, restaurants, industry — “We have all of these elements that contribute to our quality of life that can be enjoyed by visitors as well as our community residents,” Bellantoni said. “Saratoga has done everything they could to help local businesses thrive through COVID and beyond,” she noted, like expanding outdoor dining (and keeping it in effect going forward), as well as creating and keeping many safety measures going. “Saratoga is fortunate to be a drive destination that many locals and other state residents took advantage of during the pandemic (when national and international travel was limited) and continue to take advantage of,” she said. “We also see many visitors from the tri-state area and surrounding states before, during and ‘after’ COVID as we now seem to be moving out of the pandemic.” This spring and summer, she said, “all our attractions will be open at full capacity, especially Saratoga Race Course and Saratoga Performing Arts Center.” Plus, “the shopping is great” with many unique shops and boutiques offering a wide range of goods from clothing and accessories and art to food products, toys, antiquarian books and equestrian specialties.

he call of the wild can be irresistible. Camping enthusiasts often insist there’s nothing better than sleeping beneath a starfilled sky, and anyone who’s experienced a night under the stars would likely find it hard to argue that point. Comfort and camping are not exactly synonymous. In fact, many people look forward to roughing it in the wild and intentionally eschew comfort in an effort to create what they feel is a more authentic camping experience. But those who want the best of both worlds can try various strategies to combine camping and comfort.

· FOCUS ON A GOOD NIGHT’S REST. Where the Sun Shines Bright and Your Cares Fade Fast. When it comes to incredible outdoor fun that your whole family will love, Florida’s Sweetest Spot delivers—every time.

SEE US AT THE BOOTH!
A good night’s rest can be elusive for novice and experienced campers alike. Thankfully, campers can explore various options to make their nights out in the wild more conducive to sleep. The outdoor recreation experts at REI note that there are three types of sleeping pads: self-inflating, air and closed-cell foam. REI recommends air pads or closed-cell pads for backpackers, as these are lightweight options that won’t make backpacking more difficult. Selfinflating pads work better for car camping, as these are heavier but also thicker and wider than the alternatives, providing more comfort and support. Bring along a pillow from home or an inflatable camp pillow for added comfort.
3165928-01
· INVEST IN A GOOD COOLER.
www.VisitAntiguaBarbuda.com
It’s easy to take food and beverages for granted when planning a camping trip. However, when camping for a weekend or longer, a good cooler can ensure food and beverages
stay cold without forcing campers to make routine ice runs. Lightweight coolers with thick walls and sufficient insulation won’t prove a chore to lug to and from the campsite and they will be highly effective at keeping meat, fish and beverages cold during your trip.
· INCREASE YOUR BODY HEAT BEFORE GOING TO BED. Nighttime temperatures can dip even when camping in summertime. Few people find it easy to fall asleep when they’re cold, but a few simple tricks can ensure you’re warm and comfortable when it’s time to call it a night. REI recommends wearing long underwear overnight and putting on a fresh pair of clean, dry socks before going to bed. In addition, eating a light meal or snack before bed will start the digestion process, which can warm your internal body temperature and make it easier to sleep comfortably.
· SPICE THINGS UP.
Food cooked over an open flame is undeniably delicious, but it’s easy for campers to forget that such meals are made even better with spices. But foods made around the campfire need not be bland. Spice bottles are portable and don’t take up much space. Salt and pepper are must-haves, but it’s easy for campers to tote along additional favorite spices to make mealtime that much more palatable.
Camping and comfort may not go hand in hand. But there are many ways for campers to enjoy a comfortable night in the great outdoors.

ith so many people returning to travel this summer, now is a good time for vacationers
to consider travel insurance, and why it could be the best accessory travelers can have in the months ahead.
Prevention has indicated travel is safe for people who are fully vaccinated, travel insurance could provide a safety net should travelers need to cancel or interrupt their trips. The financial experts at NerdWallet note that travel insurance policies may reimburse travelers whose flights were canceled or whose trips were interrupted. Consumers should determine just what is covered in regard to interruptions. A Cancel for Any Reason addendum, also known as a CFAR, is one potential option travelers can consider. Such an add-on allows travelers to cancel their trips for any reason and receive a partial refund for what they paid.

Airlines will no doubt welcome a busy travel season this summer. However, challenges of accommodating
such a significant uptick in travelers could increase the likelihood that baggage is lost or damaged. Travel insurance policies can provide a safety net against lost, damaged or even delayed baggage.
MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
No one wants to imagine having a medical emergency while on vacation. But such incidents happen, and a travel insurance policy can cover travelers for emergency medical expenses, including transport home. That could be an especially important benefit during an era when public health remains somewhat unpredictable. Travel is making a comeback this summer. Travelers who want a little extra security on vacation this summer can purchase a travel insurance policy to protect themselves against the unknown.

ach couple has a different definition of what constitutes a romantic getaway. For some, simply enjoying a night alone is romantic enough. Others may feel resort vacations are the epitome of romance. When planning a romantic getaway, couples should first identify what is important to them in a trip. Some may want a bevy of activities while others are simply looking to soak up some sun on the beach. A budget also should be established so destinations can be chosen based on affordability. Below are seven tips that can help couples plan the perfect romantic getaway.
· BOOK OUTSIDE OF THE HIGH SEASON.
When researching locales, try to avoid peak tourist seasons. For example, you don’t want to be in New Orleans during Mardi Gras or heading to Florida beaches during spring break. Instead, find a quiet time when you can take advantage of amenities and get individualized attention.
· AVOID SCHOOL BREAKS.
Another set of dates to avoid is when schools tend to break for holidays or conferences. You may not want to share the resort pool with crying toddlers or splashing adolescents if romance is the name of the game.
· CONSIDER COUPLESONLY RESORTS.
can book stays for just about any reason without bumping into families and children. Several other brands and individual hotels cater exclusively to adults depending on the destination.
· DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT.
Leave devices and digital distractions at home and try to be in the moment as much as possible during the trip.
· GET A ROOM WITH A VIEW.
Spend a little more to book a room with a scenic view. If that room also has a balcony where you can sit and enjoy the view, even better. Make a date each night to sit and watch the sunset or get up early one morning and watch the sunrise together hand-in-hand.
· INVESTIGATE CRUISES.
Cruises are beneficial to couples looking to escape stressors because they are floating resorts. Once you pay for your trip, there’s little else you need to do but enjoy yourself.
· RESEARCH SPOTS FOR RELAXING WHEN CHOOSING HOTELS.
A room with a fireplace, hammocks on the beach, dual beach loungers, and loveseats for two are some cozy places to get up close and personal.

ntertaining diversions and snacks are musthaves when traveling with kids in tow. Children add the element of surprise and the unexpected - not to mention extra gear - and parents must adapt accordingly when they travel with their little ones. These pointers can keep parents properly prepared.
· PACK FOR THE JOURNEY.
Anticipate what your child may need, but remember, unless you are traveling to a remote location, there’s a good chance you can buy many items at your destination. Food and entertainment are two key components to keep in mind.
· FACTOR IN “STRETCH YOUR LEGS” OPPORTUNITIES. Children have limited attention spans and abilities to stay put. According to Brain Balance, a program for improving concentration, children between the ages of two and six have attention spans from four to 18 minutes. Since kids may not be able to sit still the entire time, build breaks into trips so they can get up, run around and expend some of their boundless energy.
· TRAVEL EARLY OR LATE AT NIGHT.
· PLAN WISELY.
Choose lodging that fits your needs. Some people prefer a rental home because it affords more space and the ability to save money by preparing some meals at “home.” However, certain hotels may have babysitting services or recreational activities for children, enabling Mom or Dad to have a little time off.

· BRING A LIGHT STROLLER AND BABY SLING/CARRIER.
A full-sized stroller may be cumbersome, especially on sand or cobblestone. A sling or carrier enables you to navigate crowded places with ease. A lightweight, folding stroller can be used as a temporary bed for naps or when your toddler has tired out from walking.

· SECURITY RULES.
Check with the airline for confirmation, but the TSA generally allows formula, breast milk, and juice in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in carry-on baggage. It does not need to fit within a quart-sized bag. Remove these items from your carry-on bag to be screened separately from the rest of your belongings.
· EXPLAIN THE ITINERARY.
For young children who are able to understand, spell out what will be happening along the journey so they know what to expect. This can help calm nerves and prevent tantrums.

Morning flights tend to be less crowded and are less likely to have takeoff delays that can push kids into meltdown mode. Kids are apt to be tired in the wee hours of the morning or later in the evening, so traveling, whether by
road or sky, when they’re likely to sleep can be advantageous.
