Antigua & Barbuda Tourism
The island has warm, steady winds, a complex coastline of safe harbors, and a protective, nearly unbroken wall of coral reef. The expansive, winding coastline is where today’s trekkers encounter a tremendous wealth of secluded, powdery soft beaches and coral reefs. Temperatures generally range from the mid-seventies in the winter to the mid-eighties in the summer. Annual rainfall averages only 45 inches, making it the sunniest of the Eastern Caribbean Islands, and the northeast trade winds are nearly constant, flagging only in September. Low humidity yearround.
Aruba Tourism Authority
Aruba consistently ranks as having the least amount of rainfall in the Southern Caribbean. The calming trade winds will keep you cool in the pleasant 82-degree weather. Thanks to our location outside the hurrican belt, visitors can expect reliably great weather throughout the year. Our island is also alive with sights, sounds, and culinary delights found on no other Caribbean island. Friendly people eager to welcome and embrace you, surprising natural wonders to explore, and countless ways to relax and indulge your wild side. Just a few of the many reasons you’ll find “Your Happy Place” on One Happy Island.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR TRAVELING WITH DOGS
After years living under the cloud of a pan demic that limited where they could travel, many people have a strong desire to head off for parts unknown. As individuals and families ponder business trips or va cations, they may think about bringing a beloved pet along.
According to a AAA/Best Western survey, 85 percent of dog owners travel with their dogs. The most popular vacations to let pooches tag along include going to the beach, camping and hiking.
As a greater number of people are engaging in more activi ties with their pets, businesses in the travel and hospitality sector are taking notice and have become more accommo dating to four-legged guests. However, there’s still plenty to learn when taking a dog along as a travel companion. Explore these dog travel tips.
· INVEST IN A CRATE.
Even if the dog does not need a crate at home, it’s best to have one for travel. Crates often are required for airline travel and can keep dogs safer in cars. Many hotels also require that dogs be crated in the rooms to keep them out of trouble and prevent dam age. A crate should be large enough that the dog can stand, turn and lie down, according to the American Kennel Club.
· CARRY COPIES OF PET-RELATED DOCUMENTS.
It’s important to prove that the dog is healthy and current on vaccinations. Of ficials may ask to see docu mentation when traveling abroad. Some travelers also may want to investigate pet passports. The USA does not require a pet passport, but the European Union pioneered pet passports to enable animals to move more freely throughout its member nations.
· PLAN A SHORT EXCURSION FIRST.
If you have never traveled with a dog before, make the first trip a short one, such as an overnight or two-day
stay. This way, if the trip turns into a fiasco, checkout isn’t a week away. Shorter trips also help people figure out what works and what will need to change the next time.
· EXPECT SOME FEES. Most hotels charge a fee for doggy clients. A fee of $25 to $50 is pretty standard. There also may be a desig nated pet floor to minimize the chances that guests without pets will be forced to interact with animals.
· NORMAL BEHAVIOR MAY GO OUT THE WINDOW.
A dog who is calm at home may be out of sorts while traveling. It’s not uncom mon for a dog unphased by people at home to suddenly be anxious and bark at sounds in a hotel hallway.
· LOOK INTO PET-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS.
Smarter Travel says that some hotels won’t allow a guest to keep the dog alone in the room. That means meal time can be tricky. Find restaurants nearby that allow pets. Many that have outdoor seating may enable a leashed pet to stay near the seating perimeter.
· BRING WATER FROM HOME.
When packing food, pack a few gallons of water as well, even though it can be cum bersome. Some dogs with delicate digestive systems may be upset by drinking the local water. A case of diarrhea is compounded further by having to make it into an elevator and outside the hotel in time.
· TIRE THE DOG OUT.
Exercised dogs tend to be well-behaved dogs. Make time to go on long walks, visit a dog park or engage in other activities that will make the pup tired so it’s less likely to cause problems at the hotel.
Learn the ropes of traveling with a dog to increase the opportunities for having lots of fun with Fido in tow.

When seeking accommodations for vacations or business trips, travelers have a number of lodging options to choose from. Choosing the right accommodation in any given situation involves understanding the differenc es between your options.
MOTEL
Motels are budget-friend ly options geared toward motorists. As the American highway system was devel oped in the early twentieth century, motels fulfilled the cross-country traveler’s need for roadside stops. In fact, the “mo” in “motel” refers to “motor.” Motels are built for short stays, and tend to have rooms that open up into parking lots for ease of use.
HOTEL
Hotels cater to people who will be staying a few nights. They often feature spacious lobbies and some amenities, such as swim ming pools or exercise rooms. Some hotels have restaurants attached to them. Hotels are among the most popular accom modations. According to the travel resource Daunt less Jaunter, hotels are categorized according to a “star” rating system.
· 1-star: This is a bare es sentials hotel that offers just the basics with no extra bells and whistles.
· 2-star: A two-star hotel is usually reasonably priced and has minimal services and amenities and a neutral decor.
· 3-star: This hotel is meant to offer an above-average stay as far as options and ame nities. Modern conve niences can be expected at three-star properties.
· 4- and 5-star: These ho tels offer deluxe service and guests can expect luxury amenities and a wide range of offerings at these properties. However, they also can expect to pay more for accommodations.
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LODGING ACCOMMODATIONS
EXTENDED STAY/ EFFICIENCY SUITES
Extended stay properties offer competitive rates for travelers who will need to remain at the hotel for a longer period of time than the average trip or desire more room. Extended stay rooms and efficiency suites are large and have features like small apartments, including kitchenettes and living areas.
BED AND BREAKFAST
Bed and breakfast estab lishments typically are converted family homes or large guest houses that feature a number of bedrooms. Owners rent the rooms to guests, who eat breakfast in the dining room, sometimes along side other guests. It’s a communal experience and one that lends a more fami ly feel to traveling.
INN
Inns usually are smaller than chain hotels, and tend to be family-owned. They offer charm and cozy appeal to guests, but that may come at the expense of in-room amenities.
AIRBNB
A relative newcomer to the accommodations arena, an Airbnb is a residental property that hosts renters, often on a short-term basis. These may be pri vate apartments, condos, homes, or vacation proper ties that owners temporari ly sublet to travelers. While Airbnb is the name of a registered rental market place company (airbnb. com), the term often is used for any property that follows the same model, including options from companies like VRBO and HomeAway. Airbnb is an abbreviation that stands for “air mattress bed and breakfast.”
The importance of using VACATION TIME
How many employees have wished for a short er work week, especial ly when it’s only Tuesday and Friday is nowhere in sight?
According to the “2018 State of the American Vacation” report from the U.S. Travel Association, more than half of all working Americans have unused paid vacation days.
According to the USTA’s Proj ect Time Off, Americans are taking roughly one less week of vacation per year than they did in the mid-1970s, and the trend continues to decline. It’s not much different in Canada. A 2020 ADP survey found that 49 percent of working Canadians were taking less or no vacation time during the holiday season. Fifty percent of women and 37 percent of men reported that they took less than half of their alloted time off that year.
Workers cite several rea sons for skipping vacations, including feeling an obliga tion to employers or worry ing that taking time off may make them stack up poorly against coworkers when being reviewed for promotions or raises. However, failing to take vacation has notable con sequences that should not be ignored. Here’s why individ uals should make vacations priorities.
AVOID HEALTH CONSEQUENCES
A study published by the National Center of Bio technology Information found that men who were at risk for heart disease and skipped vacation were 30 percent more likely to have heart attacks than those who took extended time off during the year.
Similar effects occur in women. Taking little or no time off also could put individuals at increased risk for anxiety, depres
sion, obesity, insomnia, and other stress-related ill nesses, particularly among females. Simply taking a vacation or two per year can help tame stress and improve individuals’ longterm health outlook.
GET A BRAIN BREAK
Focusing attention on new scenery and activities for a week or more can improve performance upon return ing to work. The USTA also indicates having a vacation to look forward to can motivate individuals to finish a project or report in a timely manner.
ENJOY HIGHER JOB SATISFACTION
The Society for Human Resource Management said that 78 percent of human resources direc tors found that employees who took more vacation days reported higher job satisfaction. That could be because vacations help people feel less stressed and generally happier, which can extend to the workplace.
DEVELOP STRONG BONDS WITH FAMILY
Having fun with the family away from the distractions of daily life is a major advantage of vacationing. Few families have consis tent time to spend togeth er, but vacations enable everyone to take a break from the routine frenzy and focus on one another.
It’s tempting to skip vaca tions to be more productive, but workers actually may be doing their productivity a disservice by failing to rest and recharge.
HAVE KIDS; WILL TRAVEL VACATIONING WITH YOUNG CHILDREN
Entertaining diversions and snacks are musthaves when traveling with kids in tow. Prior to having children, few adults would bat an eye at spontaneous weekend excursions or dis counted red-eye travel deals that required little more than a hastily packed carry-on bag and passport in hand. Once adults make the decisions to expand their families, travel ing even short distances often requires precise and detailed planning.
Children add the element of surprise and the unexpectednot to mention extra gear - and parents must adapt according ly when they travel with their little ones. These pointers can keep parents properly pre pared.
· PACK FOR THE JOURNEY.
Anticipate what your child may need, but remember, unless you are traveling to a remote location, there’s a good chance you can buy many items at your des tination. Direct much of your focus on packing items you’ll need for the journey, and less on what you’ll need once you arrive. Food and entertainment are two key components to keep in mind.
· FACTOR IN “STRETCH YOUR LEGS” OPPORTUNITIES.
Children have limited attention spans and abilities to stay put. According to Brain Balance, a program for improving concentration, children between the ages of two and six have atten tion spans from four to 18 minutes. Since kids may not be able to sit still the entire time, build breaks into trips so they can get up, run around and expend some of their boundless energy.
· TRAVEL EARLY MORNING OR LATE AT NIGHT.
Morning flights tend to be less crowded and are less likely to have takeoff delays
that can push kids into melt down mode. Kids are apt to be tired in the wee hours of the morning or later in the evening, so traveling, whether by road or sky, when they’re likely to sleep can be advantageous.
· PLAN ACCOMMODATIONS WISELY.
Choose lodging that fits your needs. Some people prefer a rental home be cause it affords more space and the ability to save mon ey by preparing some meals at “home.” However, certain hotels may have babysitting services or recreational activities for children, en abling Mom or Dad to have a little time off.
· BRING A LIGHT STROLLER AND BABY SLING/CARRIER.
A full-sized stroller may be cumbersome, especially on sand or cobblestone. A sling or carrier enables you to navigate crowded places with ease. A lightweight, folding stroller can be used as a temporary bed for naps or when your toddler has tired out from walking.
· KNOW SECURITY RULES.
Check with the airline for confirmation, but the TSA generally allows formula, breast milk, and juice in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in carry-on baggage. It does not need to fit within a quart-sized bag. Remove these items from your carry-on bag to be screened separately from the rest of your belongings.
· EXPLAIN THE ITINERARY.
For young children who are able to understand, spell out what will be happening along the journey so they know what to expect. This can help calm nerves and prevent tantrums.
Traveling with young children requires a little extra planning and patience.

How to travel safely this HOLIDAY SEASON
with Friendship Tours
Transportation Secu rity Administrators screened more than 1.3 million people on January 3, 2021, at airport security checkpoints across the Unit ed States. That was the larg est number of travelers the TSA had seen since March 15, 2020, which was just four days after the World Health Organization declared a pandemic. Airports and other transportation hubs are now as crowded as ever, as the world has largely opened up and vaccinations have helped people feel more confident about traveling.
With millions once again returning to the roads, rails and skies to celebrate the hol idays with friends and family, it is once again prudent to go over safety tips that pertain to holiday-related travel. Follow these guidelines when head ing home for the holidays.
MAKE YOUR HOME SECURE
Travel safety begins before you even step out side your door. It means securing the home and any belongings inside and protecting them from thieves who prey upon holiday travelers. Bur glaries tend to rise in both the summer months and during the holidays, when homes are more likely to be vacant. Ask a neigh bor to keep an eye on the property and report any suspicious activity. Install a home alarm and activate it. Utilize a video doorbell, which can be answered remotely. Don’t post travel plans on social media, and be sure your home looks occupied while you’re away.
PRACTICE SAFE AIR TRAVEL
Airports are busy at all times of the year, but particularly so during the holiday season. Guard belongings by keeping an
eye on your luggage and other bags at all times, even after boarding the plane. If you will be bringing a tablet, laptop or another expensive device onto the plane, put it on the x-ray belt last, so the device will not be out in the open for too long. Keep close to young children so they cannot wander off and get lost.
PREPARE FOR VEHICLE TRAVEL
If you’re driving, get an oil change if it is due or close to it. Have an emergency kit packed into the car that includes road breakdown tools, flares, blankets, water, and snacks.
Avoid distractions while on the road and depart after getting plenty of rest. Designate a sober driver to get everyone home after drinking at a party where alcohol is being served.
It’s cold, icy and snowy in most areas during the holidays. Roads can be slippery and conditions suboptimal. Leave extra time, drive slowly and avoid driving until roads have been treated.
KEEP GIFTS OUT OF SIGHT
When transporting gifts to and from home, including shopping for presents, keep items away from curious eyes. Packages should be kept in a locked trunk or in a covered cargo area. Consider shipping items to their destinations (and insure the packages) to avoid running the risk of gifts being lost or stolen en route.
These are just a few ways to keep safe when traveling for the holiday season. Keep merry and bright by avoiding theft and injury.

By CORI URBAN SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICANThe history, scenic beauty and “city in the country” vibe make Saratoga County, New York, a great fall and winter destination, said the vice president of tourism for the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce.

How to find the right VACATION RENTAL
and then cook “at home” for the remainder.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
In fact, using vacation time can reduce stress and improve overall health.
While there is a certain measure of work that goes into vacation planning, and for some it can be stressful to coordinate all of the details, vacationing benefits tend to exceed the hassle of planning. Anxiety can be avoided or at least reduced by finding optimal accommodations. For many, that includes a vaca tion home rental. Individuals can consider these tips when selecting a vacation rental.
WHY A VACATION RENTAL?
There are many different accommodations available for week-long getaways or short er excursions. Oftentimes va cationers prefer a little more space than a standard hotel room can provide. A vacation home rental can be the type of place that prioritizes space and distance from otherssomething that has became even more valuable during the global pandemic.
Another advantage to a vacation rental is the ability to prepare some or all of the meals on the property. That can help corral expenses normally reserved for dining out for three meals a day. Instead, vacationers can pick one or more opportunities for special meals at restaurants
Travelers accustomed to staying in chain hotels and other resorts likely know what they are getting from the accommodations. That’s because these prop erties pride themselves on consistency. Whether you stay at a Marriott or Hyatt in one place or another, you’ll find similar furnish ings, space and offerings. When it comes to vacation rentals, things are a little less predictable. However, scouring reviews on sites that advertise vacation rentals, or relying on the experiences of people you know increases the likelihood that you’ll find unique and satisfying vacation rentals.
PRIORITIZE NEEDS AND WANTS
Vacation rentals can be narrowed down by your desired amenities and features. For example, you can search by the number of bedrooms or for rentals that are pet-friendly if you’re bringing a compan ion animal along. Maybe you need a property that is close to transportation or has shopping nearby? Make a list of desired items and then choose properties that check most, if not all, of those boxes.
VERIFY ALLOWANCES
A beachfront property commands a premium price, as do rentals that are adjacent to specific points of interest or in major cit ies. If you’re willing to stay further away, you likely can save a considerable amount of money. Inves
Vacations present an opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, often recharging mind and body in the process.
tigate parking options, public transportation or if beach towns allow golf cart rentals to make reach ing amenities easier.
CHECK ALL RENTAL POLICIES
Read through rental agreements before diving in. Items to look at include cancellation policies and whether or not penalties will be charged. Some rentals pass cleaning fees on to the renters or require deposits that will be returned only if there is no damage to the property.
ASK FOR THE EXACT ADDRESS
Rental property adver tisements post the best angles in photos to help disguise any shortcom ings. Close-ups of the home may not showcase the neighborhood in which its located. By having the exact address in advance, you can do a street view on Google, Apple or another online map and see what is around the property - in
cluding how close it really is to amenities. “Near the beach” can be anything from one street to a few miles away.
CONSIDER EXEMPLARY HOSTS
Services like Airbnb and VRBO are two of the leading vacation home rental businesses. Airbnb has a category of Super hosts, who must boast at least a 4.8 rating to qualify. Superhosts tend to provide superior hospitality and respond to messages quite readily. Similarly, VRBO has Premier Hosts. They also consistently provide great experiences for guests. Choosing hosts with these ratings can help you feel more confident that you’ll be getting a desirable rental.
Vacation home rentals often are a good option when spending time away. It’s eas ier than ever to find proper ties that will meet travelers’ needs.
The basics of GLAMPING
If asked to describe a typical camping trip, many people would likely share a tale of roughing it in the woods un der a starlit sky. Though that might be the traditional way to go camping, a recent trend has inspired its fair share of devotees to embrace a wholly different way to spend a night or two in the great outdoors.
The word “glamping” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2016. There’s no uniform way to go glamp ing, but this 21st century way to immerse oneself in nature is often billed as traditional camping with a more luxu rious and glamorous twist. Glamping devotees typically love to experience nature but want to do so with the same resort-style luxury they’ve grown accustomed to on more traditional vacations.
Glamping may not be for everyone, but those interest ed in a less traditional take on camping can give their next excursion into the great outdoors a more luxurious feel with a few tweaks.
· BRING A BED.
Perhaps the most nota ble difference between camping and glamping is bedding. While tradi tional campers nestle into sleeping bags when they call it a night, glampers retire to a more familiar space. Glamping beds tend to be folding airbed cots that are leak-free and capable of bearing several hundred pounds depend ing on the size. Glampers prefer bedding because of the added comfort and be cause it ensures they don’t
have to sleep on top of potentially rocky terrain.
· BRING SOME LIGHTING.
Glampers can still enjoy sing-alongs around the campfire, but some extra solar-powered lighting can add a little more ambiance and facilitate nighttime trips to the car for supplies.
· FURNISH THE CAMPGROUND.
Whether it’s a small accent like a framed night stand photo from home or a rug to line the floor of your tent, some extra fur nishings can help distin guish a glamping trip from more traditional camping. Some extra folding tables to hold food and beverag es during the trip also can add a touch of luxury to your camping trip.
· RECONSIDER THE MENU.
Franks and beans may be a go-to on tradition al camping trips, but glampers may want a menu that’s more about gourmet than conve nience. A portable grill can expand the menu options, while some pre made salads can make a glamping weekend better for your waistline.
Few outdoors experiences are as immersive as camp ing. But those who want to experience nature firsthand without sacrificing luxury can consider glamping.

OUTDOORS
People venture into the great outdoors for many different reasons. The Outdoor Recreation Jobs and Economic Impact Act was developed in part to analyze the outdoor recreation econ omy of the United States. In 2018, its report showed outdoor recreation contrib uted more than $412 billion to the U.S. economy and 4.5 million jobs. In 2019-2020, Parks Canada reported 24.8 million people visited parks and historic sites.
Outdoors
The outdoors became even more popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. Outdoor areas were safer places to gather and made it easier to gather with out compromising social distancing guidelines. Since then, nature has continued to provide the space and respite people need.
As people continue to ven ture outdoors, it is important to do so safely. Yale Medicine says serious medical con ditions and severe injuries can occur in the wilderness. Preparation is key to avoid such scenarios.
CHECK THE WEATHER
Know what the weather will be when spending time in the great out doors. Hikers or those engaged in other activi ties should have a way to protect themselves from rain and lightning strikes or being caught in cold weather for a long time. Appropriate clothing and a tarp or another tempo rary shelter can be crucial.
TAKE A FIRST AID KIT ALONG
The first aid kit should be stocked with the basics for routine medical issues like cuts, burns or insect bites. For seri ous outdoors people, a lightweight splint can immobilize a sprain or broken bone. Outfit the kit depending on the activity. Consult with a medical professional or park ranger about what to bring.
LEAVE A PLAN WITH SOMEONE
Much in the way a pilot files a flight plan, people spending time outdoors should create their own travel plans and leave the details with someone at home. The plan should list who is going, where everyone will be and the expected time away. This way if the group is not heard from in a set period of time, the person at home will know where to begin the search.
RESPECT PLANTS AND ANIMALS
Injuries can occur from encounters with flora and fauna. Do not handle or consume wild plants with out knowing that they are safe. Do not approach or feed wild animals. Store food up and away from tents so that bears and other animals will not be lured to your campsite.
PRACTICE FIRE SAFETY
The conservation organi zation Wild Virgina urges outdoor lovers to follow fire safety guidelines. Do not create a fire beneath overhanging branches or anywhere other items may catch fire. Use a ring of sand or stones to con tain the campfire. Never light a fire if the fire dan ger rating is high. Parks usually post wildfire risk charts that will indicate if fires are off limits. Always fully extinguish a fire be fore leaving the area, and check that the ashes are no longer smoldering.
KNOW LIMITS
Each individual should know his or her medical history and physical lim itations and keep them in mind when planning days outdoors.
Spending time outdoors presents plenty of opportuni ties for enjoyment, especially when people take safety mea sures into consideration.
Beyond getting your steps in.

Many people equate travel with high prices and some overin dulgence. After all, for a lot of people, vacations come but once or twice per year. While it’s true the “go big or go home” mantra is never far from the mind while on vaca tion, ensuring a fun trip does not require emptying one’s wallet. The world has plenty of affordable destinations for those willing to do their research and think outside of the box. Plus, even locales billed as expensive can be made more affordable with some smart travel tips.
NORTH AMERICAN NATIONAL PARKS
National parks across North America are budget-friendly destina tions. These parks boast incredibly scenic vistas and plenty of activities for outdoors enthusiasts. Most feature modest en trance fees and affordable adjacent lodging. The trip can be even more frugal by camping on park lands.
CHATTANOOGA, TN
The draw of Nashville may be strong, but nearby Chattanooga also can be an entertaining place to enjoy some southern hospitality. Chattanooga is centrally located to many areas in the United States. Chattanooga hosts the Tennessee Aquarium, which has a large fresh water aquarium and an opportunity to touch stur geon, which is an ancient fish species.
SOUTH AMERICA
When seeking warm er climates and sandy beaches, many travelers immediately think of the Caribbean islands. But for the budget-conscious,
countries like El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Costa Rica may be more affordable. These countries are home to rich jungles and ancient ruins as well.
ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA
Theme parks may be a big part of Florida’s tourist draw, but such parks can be expensive for families. Looking elsewhere in Florida for dream destina tions that are easier on the pocketbook doesn’t take a lot of work. St. Augustine in Northern Florida is America’s oldest city and is packed with historical monuments, quaint shops and great dining. The city also sits a mere five miles northwest of St. Augustine Beach, which offers miles of shoreline to explore.

Schenectady
By CORI URBAN SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICANSchenectady County, New York, offers many great outdoor opportunities for visitors and locals alike in spring and summer. Whether biking or running along the newly completed Empire State Trail, which connects New York City to Buffalo through Schenectady County along the Erie Canalway Trail, kayaking in the Mo hawk River (also part of the Erie Canal), ziplining at the Mountain Ridge Adventure Park, strolling through the Stockade neighborhood (New York State’s first designated historic district), adventur ing through Schenectady’s Central Park or sampling delicious craft beverages on Schenectady County’s Ale
Trail, there is something for everyone to enjoy here.
“The quality of life here is outstanding,” said Todd T. Garofano, executive director of Discover Schenectady, a non-profit organization responsible for promoting travel, tourism, conference and convention assets and opportunities throughout Schenectady County. “We have four distinct seasons with plenty of outdoor and in door attractions for each. And that we’re only three hours from New York City, three hours from Boston and three hours from Montreal make it ideal and easy to visit.”
The year-round population of Schenectady is 158,000, and new for residents and visitors alike is Van Gogh, the Immersive Experience at
Armory Studios NY, running through the end of the year. Have you ever dreamed of stepping into a painting? Now you can with this exhibition that has been touring since 2017; the location is yet to be announced.
Van Gogh: The Im mersive Experience is a 20,000-square-foot light and sound spectacular featur ing two-story projections of the artist’s most compel ling works. Encounter the brilliance of one of history’s greatest artists in a 360-de gree exhibit of unparalleled proportions.
In addition to the immer sive experience that lasts 60 to 75 minutes, visitors may want to visit some of the popular places to see and experience some of the other
things to do: Rivers Casino Resort, Proctors Theater, Museum of Innovation and Science (MiSci), Via Aquari um and Via Dino Discovery, Empire State Aerospace Museum, Mountain Ridge Adventure Park, The Stockade and Mabee Farm.
The oldest farm in the Mo hawk Valley, the 1705 Mabee Farm Historic Site offers vis itors vibrant educational and recreational opportunities as well as year-round interactive exhibitions, lecture series, workshops and school pro grams; it is home to extensive historical collections.
According to Garofano, who has lived in the area for more than 40 years, some of the best “hidden” things to do in the Schenectady area include the unique shops and restaurants at the Jay Street Marketplace, Upper Union Street and the many unique neighborhoods throughout the county.
Schenectady’s only blocklong, brick-paved, pedestri an-only street; the Jay Street Marketplace provides unique shopping and dining expe riences. It is conveniently located across from Proctor’s Theater and a short walk from local breweries, Little Italy, Rivers Casino, The Harbor, and the Historic Stockade District.
Summer events include Summer Night, Harbor Jam,
the Freedom Park Concert Series and the Music Haven Concert Series.
Schenectady is known as the home of innovation with General Electric being found ed here in 1892; GE still has a significant presence here with its Global Research Center and Power Generation units.
“In recent years Sche nectady has undergone a renaissance with a surge of new restaurants, brew pubs and nightlife to compliment Rivers Casino and Resort, the newly developed Mohawk Harbor and revitalized down town,” Garofano said. “Proc tor’s Theater, has returned to life with a full schedule of shows and performances, bringing in the top Broadway shows, often as the spring board as they begin to tour the country each year.”
Established in 1926, Proc tor’s Theater is one of the oldest theaters in the area and is known for its regal interiors and quality performances in cluding symphonies, ballets, comedies and musicals.
The area that is now Sche nectady County was originally the land of the Mohawk tribe of the Iroquois Nation. “Much of that heritage remains,” Garofano said.
