The expansive, winding coastline is where today’s trekkers encounter a tremendous wealth of secluded, powdery soft beaches and coral reefs. Temperatures generally range from the mid-seventies in the winter to the mid-eighties in the summer. Annual rainfall averages only 45 inches, making it the sunniest of the Eastern Caribbean Islands, and the northeast trade winds are nearly constant, flagging only in September. SO MUCH MORE THAN BEACHES…
Town of Dennis
By Cori Urban SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN
With beaches on both its north side and south side, Dennis is a beachcombers’ dream.
Dennis has some of the most beautiful beaches on Cape Cod, including 16 on the ocean and two on freshwater lakes. One-time, weekly or seasonal beach parking passes can be purchased at the Dennis Town Hall.
But there’s much more to the Dennis area than its beaches. Think biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking, wind surfing, walking trails, shopping, eating, museums, and theater.
“There is just so much to do,” enthused Kathleen M. DeMeyer, owner/president of Encore Construction Company Inc. and Chair the Town of Dennis Tourism Committee who has lived in the Dennis area full time for
38 years.
Her favorite aspects of the area are its quaint and relaxed atmosphere, proximity to the ocean and numerous hiking and biking trails.
According to town.dennis. ma.us/about-dennis, Dennis combines its traditional New England heritage with modern day conveniences.
The villages of East Dennis, Dennis and South Dennis feature scenic historic districts hailing back to whaling days, while tranquil tree-lined streets meander through Dennis Port and West Dennis.
Numerous recreation trails and well-developed business districts throughout the villages are features of the area.
Dennis is located in the mid-Cape area; its beaches and activities draw visitors from near and far.
Upcoming events include “resurrecting an old tradition

called ‘Festival Days’ which will begin with the Antique Car Parade on August 27th and culminating with Fireworks on September 3rd,” DeMeyer said, adding “there will be many other events during that week.”
And for residents of the Springfield area, Dennis is but “a gas tank away,” DeMeyer said.
For those interested in history, consider a visit to a museum or historic site. The 1736 Josiah Dennis Manse Museum in Dennis was built in 1736 for the Rev. Josiah Dennis, for whom the town is named. The salt box house was purchased by the town in 1967 and has been fully restored. It contains a maritime room with a diorama of the Shiverick shipyard and has various items associated with the days of clipper ships.
The 1801 Jericho Historical Center in West Dennis is an historic house built in 1801 by Capt. Theophilus Baker. Exhibits include antiques, glassware, costumes, tools and driftwood zoo.
The 1867 West Dennis Graded School House and Maritime Museum highlights local sea captains, their ships, their tales and navigational tools. The last graded school in Dennis features an 1860’s school room.
Scargo Tower in Dennis Village began as a tourist observatory in 1874. Made of wood, it was destroyed in a gale two years later. Rebuilt again of wood, it burned in 1900. The current cobblestone tower
opened in 1901 with a 30-foot tower on the highest hill in the mid-Cape. With the right weather conditions, visitors can see from the lower cape to Provincetown and as far west as Plymouth.
Area art galleries include the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis features works by past and present artists. There is a Sculpture Garden, yearround classes for children and adults, special events and unique gifts by local artists in the museum shop.
In Dennis, options abound for shopping for crafts, clothes, furniture, home furnishings, gifts and consignment items. And when it’s time for a meal or snack, enjoy the many offerings for breakfast, lunch or dinner in casual or fine dining settings. And don’t miss the ice cream and candy stores.
Another stop to consider is Mill Stone Pottery in Dennis, that offers both functional and decorative pieces. Each one is wheel thrown and/ or hand-built using slabs, extrusion or hand-pressed techniques. Both production and one-of-a-kind pieces are made by hand with care and attention to detail.
Recreation and family fun include area businesses that offer go carts, miniature golf, standup paddle boating, kiteboarding and windsurfing.

UNIQUE FAMILY VACATION IDEAS
Sseason of vacations, especially for families. School is not in session in summer, and kids’ often busy schedules may grind to a halt in summer, when sports leagues, dance classes and other activities go on hiatus.
School closures and a largely empty obligation schedule makes summer a great time for families to go on vacation. Traditional vacation hotspots like adventure parks and resorts merit consideration, but the following are some unique family vacation ideas that can help parents and their children make lasting memories.
BALLPARK TOUR
For families that love baseball, a summer ballpark tour can be a truly unique experience. Whether families prefer Major League Baseball and its large ballparks or the more intimate settings at minor league stadiums, there’s no shortage of options on a ballpark tour. Both MLB and minor league stadiums tend to be located in large or mid-size cities, which means there’s plenty to do in between games as well.
CAMPER/ RV TRIP
A family vacation in a camper or RV is a cozy way for families to bond as they vacation at their own pace. National parks across the United States and Canada make for ideal places to visit when touring each country in a camper or RV. But there’s really no limit to the experiences families can enjoy on self-driving trips when their beds are on board for the ride.
HISTORY ROAD TRIP
Historical landmarks dot the North American landscape, making a history road trip a fun way to hit the road and learn a little something along the way. American history buffs have no shortage of historic sites to see regardless of which region of the country they plan to visit or which period of history most intrigues them, from the Revolutionary War to the California Gold Rush to the American Civil War and more. Canadian history buffs can go all the way back to the days of the dinosaurs at the Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta or visit Nova Scotia to see the eighteenth century economic and military hub the Fortress of Louisbourg, which is the largest historical reconstruction in North America.
URBAN TOURS
One of the joys of visiting Europe is the chance to travel from city to city without spending too much time in the car or on the train between stops. Though North America might be more spread out, families can still tour various urban locales in a single vacation. Parents can pick a region of the country (such as the northeastern United States) and then plan road trips that enable them to visit different cities in that area over the course of a week to two weeks. Make an effort to try the foods each city is known for and visit a local landmark, making sure to leave time to walk around so everyone can get a feel for what a day in each city is like.
Family vacations can be as unique as the individuals taking them.

HOW TO MAXIMIZE
WEEKEND GETAWAYS
Extended summer vacations may get all of the glory, but individuals and families needn’t feel pressured to go away on week-long trips to get the rest and relaxation they deserve.
There is plenty to be said for weekend getaways as well. Working oneself ragged is no way to enjoy life. In fact, a person could be doing harm to his or her health by working too much, which may lead to lost productivity and burnout in the long run. Experts agree that getting away could be good for mental health. According to psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert, who is the author of “Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days,” a weekend trip can boost mental and emotional health. Alpert says smaller vacations even “pack a bigger punch” than longer ones. Neuroscientists have found that getaways can evoke feelings of calm, banish stress and enable the mind to heal. Furthermore, according to a Gallup study, those who make time for regular trips score higher on the Gallup-Well-Being Index. Weekend getaways simply may be easier to schedule than longer vacations.
The following are some ways to make the most of weekend getaways and why these getaways are so beneficial.
PLAN AHEAD
Weekend getaways generally do not need extensive planning. The logistics are much easier when there are only one or two nights involved in an overnight stay. Sometimes weekend getaways are only day trips, which makes them even easier to set up.
BRING PETS ALONG
Short stays may mean it is easier to bring pets. Quite often hotel chains and even homestay accommodations allow pets with the inclusion of a pet cleaning fee. This saves on having to find a pet sitter or a boarder to watch pets while you are away.
BOOK A DIFFERENT LOCALE A FEW TIMES A MONTH
Weekend getaways are more affordable than lengthier trips, which means you can see various sights without a big investment. Unlike longer vacations that tie travelers to a specific destination for the duration of the trip, weekend jaunts are short stops at different spots. Try various cities and towns on for size.
AVOID BOREDOM
Anyone who has booked an extended trip away has at times had some boredom set in when the initial wow factor of the resort or trip wears off. In some instances, it may seem as if you’ve exhausted the list of things to do. Weekend getaways are anything but boring because you’re packing so many things to do into a short amount of time.
KEEP A TO-GO BAG PACKED
When the mood hits you, you can dart off to a weekend escape. Keep a packed bag with some essentials at the ready so there’s no overthinking the vacation process.
BECOME A LOYALTY MEMBER
Investigate the loyalty programs of various hotel chains. This way if you find a chain you like and book stays regularly you can earn rewards points. These points may be redeemed for upgrades or even free rooms over time.
Weekend getaways are great ways to rest and recharge without the commitment of time and planning required of longer excursions.

A RECENT SURVEY FROM BOOKING.COM FOUND THAT 73 PERCENT OF RESPONDENTS WERE MORE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT TRAVEL THAN THEY WERE IN 2022.
DID YOU KNOW?
Despite global financial uncertainty, many people are still planning to spend on travel in 2023. A recent survey from Booking.com found that 73 percent of respondents were more optimistic about travel than they were in 2022. The survey also studied why people are looking to travel, and the most popular type of vacation was a nostalgic getaway, which 88 percent
of travelers planned to take in 2023. That’s likely due to people looking back to the days before the COVID-19 pandemic with a strong sense of appreciation.
Individuals also seem to see travel through a somewhat therapeutic lens, as 42 percent of survey respondents indicated they want a break that focuses on their mental and physical health.

HamptonBeach
New Hampshire’s Hampton Beach is rated a 5-star “Super Star Beach.”
It earned top honors for clean water from The Surfrider Foundation and from the Sierra Club for “The Cleanest Beach.”
Hampton Beach has accommodations for every budget and taste — at hotels, motels, cottages and campgrounds. And there is tax-free shopping at gift shops on the boulevard overlooking the beach.
Spring and summer are especially good times to visit the beach because of the “nice, sunny weather, great seafood and beautiful vistas,” said Denise F. Brown, Hampton Beach marketing director. She has lived all her life within 10-15 minutes of the beach and New Hampshire
seacoast, enjoying “the peacefulness and sometimes wildness of the ocean and its beauty.”
And there is so much to do for residents and visitors alike. The beach has a variety of restaurants, snack bars, shopping boutiques and family-friendly activities such as miniature golf, a playground, arcades, whale watching and fishing trips and Thursday country line dance lessons.
Try your luck at a small casino while you take a break from the sun. The Seashell Stage bands include, rock, country, reggae, polkas and oldies.
The beach area offers handicap access, lifeguards, first aid, beach wheelchairs and clean restrooms.
The Blue Ocean Discovery Center has numerous water tanks filled with various marine invertebrates and
marine plant species, and The Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom is a popular concert venue on the boulevard.
There even is a nearby surfer beach and a surf shop.
The free entertainment all summer long and “the sheer beauty and pleasure of the 1.35 square miles of white sand beach to sink your toes in and enjoy the sea breeze along the Atlantic Ocean” are just part of the draw to Hampton Beach, Brown said. Upcoming events include a world-class annual Sand Sculpting Classic in June, Country Music Fest and Miss Hampton Beach Pageant in July, Talent Competition in August and Cirque du Hampton in September.
There also will be fireworks on the beach on Wednesday

Plymouth, established when the Mayflower Pilgrims settled here in 1620, will forever be a steppingstone to America’s past. The story of the Mayflower Pilgrims and the Native Wampanoag nation is told in colorful detail at Plimoth Patuxet Museums, Pilgrim Hall, and numerous historic houses. The footpaths, trails, and streets of Plymouth, also called America’s Hometown, continue to welcome newcomers as they did four centuries ago.
Plimoth Patuxet Museums includes a re-creation of the Pilgrims’ English settlement in the early 1620s, the historic Patuxet settlement, and indoor exhibits. In Downtown Plymouth you will find a reproduction of the 1636–era working Grist Mill, a replica of the ship Mayflower in Plymouth Bay as well as the

There is no better time than summer to hop in the car and take an easy 2–3-hour drive to New York’s legendary Sullivan Catskills, where the green rolling hills and valleys, the winding creeks, and the mighty Delaware River will take your breath away.
Naturally, summer is the most popular season here. It’s loads of fun on the Delaware River in a rented raft, tube, kayak, or canoe. If it’s raining, don’t fret. Take the gang to the Kartrite Resort and Indoor Waterpark or Villa Roma Resort and Conference Center. Both are family-friendly. There is plenty of song and dance too. The Forestburgh Playhouse season includes Jersey Boys, Misery— a play based on the
the 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Festival site. Take a virtual reality tour and learn about the ‘60s in the Museum. Then see Zac Brown or Sam Hunt in the Pavilion. On August 19 and 20, a new music festival debuts on the historic field. The Catbird Festival will feature local eats, craft beer, your favorite folk, indie, Americana artists, and jam bands. Outdoor enthusiasts will find over two dozen trails to hike or bike. The Sullivan O&W Rail Trail follows the route that brought visitors here for almost 90 years. The Hurleyville

The Tusten Mountain Trail is a moderate 2.9-mile loop. This hike is best from spring through fall. Your leashed four-legged friend will also like it. If you’re fishing for more outdoor activity, drop a line in the lakes, rivers, or streams. Or take a lesson in the fine art of dry fly fishing. This area is, after all, the birthplace of the sport. Speaking of art, go enjoy traditional and modern mixed media. Galleries include Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and the Galleries at the Union in Narrowsburg, Catskill Art Space in Livingston Manor, The Claryville Art Center, Gallery 52 in Jeffersonville, and The Left Bank in Liberty. And be sure to wander the main streets, take in the low-key vibe and visit local makers and artists. In this four-season destination, any season is perfect for a trip to the wineries, breweries, distilleries, and cideries on the Good Taste Craft Beverage Trail. Many of the vintners, brewers, distillers, and cider makers have won accolades for their liquid gold. Over a dozen now include the newest Bridge and Tunnel

Not to be outdone, the foodie scene is outstanding, so much so that Foster Supply Hospitality has been nominated as a “2023 James Beard Foundation’s Restaurant and Chef Awards Semi-Finalist, Outstanding Restaurateur.” Their five restaurants feature everything from a 12-course tasting menu to pop-ups in a historic inn’s two-lane, handset bowling alley. At Resorts World Catskills, celebrity chef Scott Conant’s Cellaio, famous for aged 100% Certified Black Angus steaks is equally renowed for a vibrant, relaxed atmosphere and warm hospitality. Check it out after you roll the dice or play a round of golf at the newly renovated world-famous Monster golf course. Discover Schenectady
By CORI URBAN SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN
Whether you like to be out during the day or at night — or both — Schenectady, New York, has something for you.
From boating, kayaking, paddleboard, bicycling, running and hiking to shopping, dining out and gaming, daytime action and nightlife bustles in this area of eastern New York, near the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson rivers.
Spring and summer are great times to visit because “there are many great outdoor events, attractions and opportunities for everyone to enjoy,” said Todd T. Garofano, executive director of Discover Schenectady.
Schenectady was founded
on the south side of the Mohawk River by Dutch colonists in the 17th century.
Situated on the shores of the Mohawk River and along the Empire State Trail, Schenectady — the Schenectady County seat — offers plenty of entertainment options from trying your luck at the Rivers Casino Resort to strolling downtown and along the Jay Street Marketplace for unique shopping and dining. Just past the pedestrian section of Jay Street is Schenectady’s Little Italy on North Jay Street.
Among his favorite aspects of the area, Garofano lists the distinct four seasons, quality of life and number of parks and trails.
“Schenectady has undergone a renaissance over

recent years with a revitalized downtown, pedestrian-friendly shops, culturally diverse restaurants, new breweries and distilleries and family-friendly fun events throughout the spring and summer,” he said.
Among the popular destinations are ViaPort Aquar-
ium, MiSci (Museum of Science and Innovation) and the Empire State Aerosciences Museum.
Others include Nott Memorial on Union College Campus, Van Gogh – The Immersive Experience at Armory Studios NY, Central Park Rose Garden, Mohawk
Harbor and Proctors Theater. Central Park is known as the crown jewel of Schenectady’s parks. It is on the highest elevation in the city. Events taking place this summer include Summer Night, Freedom Park Concert Series, Music Haven, Nipperfest and Caribbean Day.
And if you’re in the area, don’t miss Jumpin’ Jack’s Drive In, Central Park, Schenectady Greenmarket and Schenectady Trading Co.
New this year are The Bunker, Murray’s Fools Distilling Co., Simone’s Kitchen, Caribe Spanish Restaurant and Upstate Canna Co.
“It’s very easy to get (here) whether by car (just off I-90 and I-890), Amtrak (Downtown Amtrak Station) or air (Albany International Airport),” Garafano said, emphasizing the wide variety of outdoor, family-friendly attractions and vibrant nightlife.
According to downtownschenectady.org, entertainment and culture abound in downtown, highlighted by
hands-on museums and the best in stage and screen: “We are also proud of our history, including the Stockade Historic District dating to 1661. Events? You bet! Come downtown all year long to enjoy festivals, concerts, dining promotions and more.”
Schenectady is part of the Capital District, the metropolitan area surrounding Albany, the capital of New York. Along with Albany and Troy, it is one of the three principal population and industrial centers in the region.

MAKE THE MOST OF A DAY AT THE LAKE
Water becomes the center of attention when the temperature climbs because of the cooling relief it can provide. Making a day of splashing through sprinklers, swimming laps in a pool or horsing around with friends at a waterpark is part of the summertime experience.
Even though most people equate summer fun with ocean escapes, those who do not live close to the coast often turn to other bodies of water to cool off and chill out. Lakes can be great places to spend summer afternoons and evenings. Discover how to make time at the lake even more fun with these ideas.
FISHING
Cast your line right into the lake and take a shot at catching some fish. Bass, trout, perch, and pike may be interested in the bait hanging off of your hook. Be sure to check local fish and game ordinances to see if you need a license for fishing for the season, as well as the recreational size limits, possession limits and fishing seasons if you plan on keeping your catch.
WATER SPORTS
Water sports and lakes often go hand-in-hand. Certain water activities are easier on the calm waters of a lake than in the waves and swells of an ocean - particularly for beginners. Canoes and kayaks are one- or two-passenger vessels
that can be launched from just about anywhere. They make areas of the lake explorable that may not be accessible to large boats. Plus they require no fuel other than the power of rowing. If you prefer more speed, personal water craft like jet skis may be used on lakes in certain areas. Waterskiing or wakeboarding behind powerboats are some additional options for thrill-seekers.
TUBING
Although tubing is often enjoyed on rivers where the rapids carry people along from a starting point to the end, those who desire a more relaxing day may opt for tubing on a lake. Tie several tubes together and create a fleet of friends or family floating leisurely under the sun. With the addition of a floating cooler full of drinks and snacks, you can stay out on the lake for hours.
LAKESIDE CUISINE
If you’re lucky to have a lodge or restaurant dockside, you can enjoy a delicious meal overlooking a sunset on the lake. Time in or on the water can build up an appetite, which can be satiated by a meal while you listen to the water lap against the shoreline.
Days at the lake can be memorable ways to spend summer vacations.

Lake George
The Lake George region is the crown jewel of New York’s 6-million acre Adirondack Park. In fact, Thomas Jefferson famously wrote “Lake George is without comparison, the most beautiful water I ever saw.”
The Lake George region is so much more than Lake George!
Our region includes lakes and rivers and spans several welcoming communities offering every experience from downtown charm to rural escapes from the hustle and bustle.
With 200+ attractions, 7,000+ rooms and 5000

Our family-friendly destination features amusement parks, rail trails, ski resorts, rich history and cultural attractions. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy 200+ miles of trails for hiking and biking. Smugglers’ Notch Resort
By CORI URBAN SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN
What makes the best summer family vacation?
“It’s when you have a place you look forward to coming back to year after year. It’s when memories of the experiences are talked about until your return or because it brought about feelings of togetherness with each member of your family that can’t be duplicated when you’re back to a work or school life,” said Steve Clokey, Vice President of Marketing and Promotions at Smugglers’ Notch Resort in Jeffersonville, Vermont. “It’s a special place that brings your family together for a priceless, best-ever family vacation.”
That’s why, he said, you should plan your vacation at “Smuggs.”
“The fact that guests are mountainside with stunning scenic views of Mount
Mansfield (Vermont’s highest peak) along with having pools, waterslides, restaurants and a complete fun vacation in walking distance from your lodging makes coming to Smuggs one of the best decisions a family can make,” he said.
Clokey has worked at resort for 35 years and especially likes the open recreation areas, inviting eclectic local community businesses, natural scenic beauty and the friendly people including excellent staff.
“From Memorial Day to Labor Day there’s an endless array of outdoor things to do including swimming, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, picnics in parks, kayak and canoeing, pools and waterslides, plus the resort offers tons of activities and entertainment every day,” he said.

6 WEEKEND ROAD TRIP ESSENTIALS
The open road beckons many people, inspiring everything from extensive adventures to short weekend jaunts. Whether a road trip lasts a few weeks or a few days, certain items should be packed along for the ride to ensure safety and convenience.
1. Safety items
Trips necessitate planning for the unexpected. When it comes to driving, that means certain maintenance tools and equipment. Some items to keep in a car include:
· jumper cables
· spare tire/car jack
· antifreeze
· motor oil
· windshield washer fluid
· flashlight and batteries
· emergency blanket
· nonperishable food/ water
· spill-proof gas can
· flares or traffic cones
· plastic funnel
· first aid kit
2. Important documents
Don’t forget to bring along the necessary documents
for operating a motor vehicle, including your driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance. Be sure that you have valid credit cards, as it may be challenging to find an ATM in some rural areas. Keep in mind that cash is often king, so have some bills stashed away when credit cards are not accepted. In addition, tuck away a paper map, as cell phone signals may not be strong in mountainous areas or where coverage is blocked for other reasons.
3. Diversions
Long drives require entertainment to keep passengers occupied, no matter the age. Playing cards, portable video games, books, puzzles, movies, and more can be brought along to pass the hours on highways and byways.
4. Gadgets
Ours is a digital world in which technology reigns supreme. Be sure to bring along various device chargers, cameras, power banks, GPS devices, Bluetooth converter, and any other gadget that can make traveling more convenient.
5. Comfort items
Some creature comforts can make traveling more indulgent. Travel pillows, window shades, seat warmers, a toiletry bag with moisturizer and eye drops, sunglasses, slip-on shoes, and sunscreen are some of the comforts to include. Comfort items also can be customized depending on your preference.
6. Snacks
Cut back on the number of stops that have to be made by bringing along snacks. Trail mix, granola bars and other items that provide a mix of protein and carbohydrates will keep everyone from becoming hungry on the road.
Weekend road trips can go more smoothly when travelers have some essentials on hand. Customize the list based on who’s along for the ride and how long the trip will be.

The excitement of an upcoming vacation can be eclipsed by the frustration and stress that sometimes results from air travel. While vacations are often intended to alleviate stress, the sheer task of getting to a destination can compromise that goal. Traveling by air can be an ordeal for a variety of reasons. Busy airports can be challenging to navigate, especially when pressed for time. There’s also the possibility of lost luggage and the anxiety that comes with going through TSA and potentially customs if you are flying internationally. Of course, some people are simply nervous about flying as well.
The good news for reluctant air travelers is that there are many ways to cut down on the stress surrounding flying.
· ENROLL IN TSA PRECHECK.
Individuals in the United States who are citizens, lawful permanent residents and U.S. nationals may be able to avoid the long lines at TSA by becoming members of PreCheck. For a fee that covers five years and after a background check, approval, fingerprinting and interview, PreCheck enables members to skip the removal of shoes and jackets as well as other TSA protocol. It is valid for domestic and international flights from more than 200 U.S.based airports. Similarly, there is a Global Entry program to expedite the customs process.
· WEIGH BEFORE YOU GO.
Paying extra for luggage is no fun. Measure luggage and put it on a scale before heading to the airport to make sure it does not exceed size and weight limits. Account for any souvenirs or items that you may bring home as well.
· GET A TRAVEL PERKS CREDIT CARD.
Certain credit cards enable you to earn not only points toward travel miles and discounted flights, but also some additional benefits. For example, you may be able to enjoy priority boarding if you are a cardholder or gain access to special member lounges while you wait for flights. These perks can go a long way toward making flying more comfortable.
· SKIP THE BAG CHECK. Pack light and only bring a carry-on bag to save time when the flight lands.
· DOWNLOAD THE AIRLINE APP.
There’s much to be said about technology, especially when it can streamline travel. Airline apps can be used to purchase tickets and have boarding passes available to be scanned at check-in. In addition, airline apps can keep you apprised of flight delays and boarding gates.
These are a few of the ways to reduce the stress of air travel.

4 STRATEGIES TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED ON LONG CAR TRIPS
What
Only here can you watch dawn rise with the stingrays, explore the world’s most intricate coral reefs, relax in a hammock underneath a casuarina tree, and eat at a five-star restaurant—all in one day.
Road trips and self-driving vacations tend to produce their own unique moments and memories, but that doesn’t mean they don’t share certain characteristics. Lately, those characteristics might be high gas prices and more traffic as many vacationers drive in an effort to circumvent the escalating cost of air travel. For parents, one component of road trips to count on like clockwork is the moment when kids ask, “Are we there yet?”
A frustration moms and
dads from all walks of life and across all generations can share, bored children calling out from the backseat can try any parent’s patience. Thankfully, parents can utilize these four strategies to keep kids occupied on long car trips.
1. TAKE OUT THE TABLET. Unlike their own parents, modern moms and dads have a reliable ally in the fight against backseat boredom. Tablets can be loaded with all sorts of entertainment, from e-books to movies to interactive activities to school lessons. Rules governing device usage may be a part of life at home, but parents can relax those rules on the road to ensure kids stay occupied until the family arrives at its destination.
2. ENCOURAGE KIDS TO SCRAPBOOK THE TRIP.
If a road trip involves visiting multiple destinations, parents can encourage kids to spend some time scrapbooking their experiences in the backseat. Kids can write about the previous day’s activities and paste ticket stubs and other mementos from the trip into their book.
3. TRANSFORM THE BACKSEAT INTO A PLAY AREA.
Parents may prefer their vehicles remain toy-free
most of the time, but transforming the backseat into a play area can ensure kids have plenty of things to do and less time to dwell on how long it’s taking to get from point A to point B. Avoid packing anything that can be turned into a projectile, especially for children who aren’t yet school-aged. But be sure to include some books, puzzles, dolls/action figures, and handheld games.
4. TIME THE TRIP WELL.
Of course, kids don’t necessarily need to be actively engaged in an activity in order to be occupied during a road trip. If possible, depart in the wee small hours of the morning, which can pay a host of dividends. Leaving before sunrise reduces the chances of being stuck in traffic, thus cutting back on the amount of time the family spends in the car. Leaving early also increases the chances that kids will spend a good portion of the trip sleeping in the backseat.
Road trips with young kids in tow can try any parent’s patience. But some useful strategies to keep kids occupied on long car trips can make such excursions much more enjoyable for everyone.
