As we look for unique ways to celebrate the accomplishments of the East Longmeadow High School Class of 2020 during this very challenging and unique time defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, we will never forget that the Class of 2020 has been learning, growing, maturing, and positively impacting the East Longmeadow Public School community for the past thirteen years. We have enjoyed your collective enthusiasm and spirit as a class, been awed by your lofty academic achievement, impressed by your athletic success, enthralled by your creativity in art and music, and humbled by your ever present willingness to give back to each other and the community. We celebrate all that you have

accomplished throughout your time in ELPS from kindergarten through 12th grade. COVID-19 does not define the Class of 2020; it is merely

another challenge that you have met along your journey. The grace, energy, grit, and determination with which you have met this challenge has been inspiring to all of us. Ironically, it has helped bring us closer together while we practice social distancing, requiring more communication, collaboration, and cooperation as new and unique plans are developed during your senior spring. You have shown incredible fortitude throughout all of this. This only adds to your legacy as a senior class. I have no doubt that the ELHS Class of 2020 will continue to achieve great things as they move on from ELHS. I wish them all of the best, and I thank them for the incredible example they provided all of us this spring.

The dictionary defines special as: distinguished by some unusual quality, being in some way superior, or held in particular esteem. I define it as The East Longmeadow Class of 2020. Not only has this class accomplished the remarkable feat that is graduating, but they have done it in the most unique of circumstances. Not only has this class remained a strong and cohesive family, but they have done it whilst demonstrating a stern unflinching resolve at everything that has been thrown at them. I feel as though I speak for every senior when I say that it was a glorious honor to have been a part of this class. We will look back at the memories we have forged together and in the years to come they will become legendary. Although the year did not go the way we wanted it to go, there is a special beauty in the way things turned out for us. A beauty hollow and deep like a sculpture. I write these things so that we, The American Class of 2020, may go into the next chapter of our lives commanding respect because we have weathered a storm, and we

CLASS PRESIDENT, SOPHIE LEMIRE My name is Sophie Lemire and I have had the opportunity to be the president of the Class of 2020 at Longmeadow High School for four remarkable years. The circumstances that led me to writing this piece may not be ideal but I am humbled to be able to share some insight into the excellence of the people I get to call my peers. Senior year is distinguished by prom, graduation, parties and those final days together. Nevertheless, recent events have forced me to look deeper and realize that being a senior is so much more than the traditions that come along with it. Being a senior is every moment, big or small, since you walked into your first day of kindergarten. It is every teacher you've had and friend you've made. It is every test you've passed and every

LHS Class President, Sophie Lemire

Reminder Publishing submitted photo

homework assignment you've completed. Although this is not at all what we envisioned the end of our senior year to look like we will now be entering the world enlightened. I stand firm

in the notion that who we are is by no means what happens to us but rather how we respond. Watching the response of seniors at Longmeadow High School to the global pandemic has been nothing short of inspiring. I’ll be honest, for a while it stung. A lot was taken from graduating seniors across the country but a lot was also taken into perspective. Before the losses could even be processed my peers began to prompt the question “How do we help?” A universal sense that we needed to embrace this moment as an opportunity to move forward to create a better world embodied the spirit of my class. This attitude is not limited to the 250 (give or take) bright and ambitious seniors at Longmeadow high school but rather the Class of 2020 as a whole. We are the

generation who will be shaping the “new normal” and with so much uncertainty there are few limitations on what we can accomplish. At Longmeadow high school, the Class of 2020 is a class of artists, activists, engineers, entrepreneurs, mathematicians, musicians but most importantly a class of friends. Being friends is the most powerful thing we can be because no one does big things by themselves. If we are going to come out stronger on the other side of this pandemic we need to do it together. The Class of 2020 is an example of what togetherness looks like. Whether my classmates are going to college, entering the workforce or joining the armed forces I know each and every one of them has too much to say to remain complacent and accept life for the

way it is. I cannot wait to see them utilize the power they have been given and voice their ideas to continue to make a better world. Even before the Corona virus outbreak we were entering a world of inequality; a world where our futures, democracy and planet were at risk. Now we are entering this world as it is at a standstill. Class of 2020, don't rebuild, build new. Build back better. Build a world that is kind, just and whole. We’ve been labeled as a generation of progressive change so let’s live up to that because if anyone is going to do it, it's the Class of 2020. Longmeadow High School seniors and the Class of 2020 in its entirety demand a better world and will stop at nothing to get it.

SUPERINTENDENT, MARTIN O’SHEA To the LHS Class of 2020, It has been my pleasure to watch you grow and learn as a talented, hardworking and spirited class. I am saddened that you did not have the opportunity to enjoy many traditional senior events because I know how hard you have worked and how much joy you have given your families, your teachers and this community. Yet, I also know how much spunk, spirit and pride you have. I know how connected you are and how creative you are. These qualities will sustain you and propel you to brighter

days, which most assuredly lie ahead. Please know that your friends, families, teachers, administrators and this entire community honor and appreciate your accomplishments and contributions as members of the Class of 2020. My very best wishes to you as you soon start your lives as proud graduates of Longmeadow High School. Respectfully, Superintendent O’Shea

You, the Class of 2020, have now reached the end of your public school career, but that end is much different than we anticipated when this school year started. Your class has the dubious distinction of being the Ludlow High School class graduating in the middle of a global pandemic. Although, your principal, teachers, parents and our community have done everything they could to

make the conclusion of your senior year special and recognize your accomplishments, we know that we cannot replace your time together as a class that was lost. We completely understand your disappointment in having your senior year cut short. However, that disappointment should not overshadow the excitement and joy you feel in celebrating this achievement. John F. Kennedy once noted, “The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word 'crisis.' One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger--but recognize the opportunity.” In times such as these, it is easy to become focused upon the danger and what has been lost. It is natural to be anxious and uncertain about what is to come. This crisis will alter our society in ways we are only beginning to understand. How we socialize and interact with each other will be different Please see Gazda page 14

This wasn’t supposed to happen. The original return-date was supposed to be Monday, March 29th. Then, another call came, pushing it back to April 8th. Yet another call came, and the date was pushed to May 4th. Then, finally, the final call came. As we were grimly expecting, our senior year had been officially canceled because of the Coronavirus. I never thought of the coronavirus as something actually to be reckoned with. Early on, it seemed to be just another passing epidemic that would fizzle out come April. But it didn’t. What was thought to be a forgettable, passing event that you’d read about on the bottom ticker of the news channel turned out to be an international crisis, making headlines and becoming internationally

cently or something, you are very well aware that the world has screeched to a standstill. And only now has our world begun to re-animate, little by little, one phase at a time. My point here is that, well, my senior year was gone. Even though the schools were closed, teaching was still happening. Like what every other school was turning to, our school took full advantage of the technology at hand. Classes became Zoom meetings, and homework was seamlessly adapted from handing in papers to emailing photos and Word documents. Even though we experienced our fair share of technological setbacks, classes were still able to resume. But class was the last thing

infamous. Of course, you don’t need me to remind you of what’s going on in the world at the moment. Unless you’ve been cryogenically re-animated re- Please see Mentekidis page 14

than it was before. Education will look different than it did before. However, every crisis opens the door to new possibilities. The challenge for you will be to identify those opportunities and take advantage of them when they appear. Throughout your life, you will inevitably face difficulties. Do not let opportunity pass you by nor let fear, anxiety or uncertainty rule your

life. By staying true to yourself and the values instilled in you by your parents, your teachers and your community, you will be able to get through the rough spots. You are a now a high school graduate and no matter where you go from here be it the military, college or the workforce you will be presented with new opportunities and challenges to overcome. You will need to learn to recognize the difference, as challenges are frequently opportunities in disguise. Often times it is how we choose to view them that

makes the difference and in the end, that choice is yours. Mark Twain once said “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Congratulations once again to the Class of 2020 for your accomplishment. I wish you all the best as you “throw off the bowlines” and leave here to pursue your dreams.

MENTEKIDIS Continued from page 13

on anybody’s mind. As the lockdown began to extend and extend, our senior events began to clash. Many were scared that the things we were supposed to have, memorable events that we have been waiting for, would have been up and canceled entirely. However, our class got lucky. Principal Nemeth and the rest of the administrative staff have been working endlessly with us, assuring that our senior events are not all dead to rights. As class president, we have met several times over this quarantine through video conferencing to discuss exactly this. She and the rest of her team have made the best possible decisions possible for our events, given the circumstances. And that is comforting: a massive relief, in fact. Something has been salvaged and preserved from this mess. We are lucky that we got our class night and senior farewell, even if they were virtual. Even though watching class night on a TV screen will never replace the actual feeling of being there and receiving the awards in person, some of the charm is still captured. We are even more lucky to have a graduation and a prom, this time somewhat in-real-life. Sure, it was nowhere near what we imagined it to be, but it’s better than nothing. I did not want to have a drive through graduation, but I am lucky I am even getting a graduation. I

know people who are expecting their diplomas in the mail. I have an opportunity to walk across a stage, in a cap and gown, and officially end my high school career for good. I did not want to have a prom in November, yet I am lucky that I am even getting a prom. There are so, so many people that are simply not getting a prom: far more than those that are not having a graduation. I’ve had a lot of time to think over this quarantine, and there’s plenty of things I’ve come to learn. There are some I am reserving specifically for my class, but I would like to share two things that I believe anybody can take into their lives. Plus, I am already way over the word limit, so two is all I can really share. Firstly, know that nothing is set in stone. Even the most concrete of plans are ultimately built upon sand. Always be cautious, and never forget a backup plan. You never know what lurks around the corner. Secondly, know that you are more adaptable than you know. I did not react well to this quarantine at first. My routine was disrupted and I found myself at odds to adjust to this new way of life. Now, however, I find myself somewhat at balance during all of this. I have made a new routine regardless of the belief that I never would. Look at what I said earlier, even: in spite of the absurd situation, our school was still able to adapt. Never count yourself out, because you are far more flexible than you know.

To the members of the class of 2020, We are sorry. We are not sure if anyone has said those three words to you since March 12th. We are sorry that your special year was cut short. We are sorry your prom was delayed. We are sorry you did not get to celebrate your senior picnic. We are sorry you never had another Calzone Day. We are sorry. At the same time of feeling this sense of loss for you, we are so proud of you. We are proud of how you approached remote learning to earn your diploma. We are proud of how you cared for your siblings, your extended family, and your neighbors. We are proud of how you cared for your classmates. There is no doubt that you are living through a moment we will read about in history books. A pandemic, social upheaval, a country more divided than it's been in decades...and

Superintendent, Steve Hale

you have handled it in stride. I look forward to your leadership in our communities and country as you bring the change we need. You are the leaders of inclusion, of acceptance, and of kindness. We need you, our communities need you, Please see Hale page 21

HALE Continued from previous page our nation needs you. At the beginning of the school year, we all imagined that this would be a special year for the Class of 2020. Although it did not occur in the manner we all thought it would, you have been special to your parents and family, our educa-

tors, our school, and most importantly, to each other. On the day you were born, your parents had two wishes; that you would one day find love and begin a family of your own someday, and that others would love you as they do. As you leave Minnechaug, always remember us, as loving you. Best wishes, The educators and staff of the Hampden–Wilbraham Regional School District.
