Brimfield
THE FAMOUS BRIMFIELD ANTIQUES AND COLLECTIBLES SHOW OPENS JULY 9 The middle show of the three Brimfield Antiques and Collectibles Show begins Tuesday , July 9 and runs through Sunday July 14. This is considered the most quiet of the three shows but it still has more than a thousand dealers spread across a mile of Route 20 in Brimfield. The show is comprised of about 20 different, privately owned and operated properties or “shows.” Many land owners vary their show times and dates with some advertising they open as early as 6 a.m. or simply “at daybreak” for early birds, and others not until 11 a.m. Also, some dealers are there all six days, while others may only sell for two days. Most fields have no entrance fee, but some charge varying amounts to get in. There is always a great mix of dealers, many of whom have their own specialty when it comes to antiques and collectibles. You never really know what kinds of things you might find at a show. Shoppers can expect to find a mix of vintage clothing, period furniture, silver, glassware, toys from yesteryear and more.

While you never know what to expect to find at the Brimfield Antiques and Collectibles Show, the same holds true for the weather. July shows can sometimes be hot so it’s best to arrive early. Last year’s show had weather in the mid 70s with a few rainy days so it is best to check the weather in advance and pick what looks like the best day. One thing shoppers never have to worry about it getting something good to eat in between their shopping adventures. There are scores of food
trucks, and other numerous places to eat whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is plenty of parking throughout the show usually around $8 to $10. Several websites with more information include brimfield. com. brimfieldantiquefleamarket. com, brimfieldshow.com, and brimfieldshows.com.

SUMMER IN THE
Berkshires
14 | things to do feature
“THE IDEA IS THAT YOU CAN COME HERE FOR A SHOW, BUT SPEND THE ENTIRE DAY EXPLORING THE BIG OUTDOORS AND GETTING IMMERSED IN OUR CULTURE BEFORE ENJOYING A SUPERB MEAL FOLLOWED BY A NIGHT OF THEATER. BY KEITH O’CONNOR SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN “Nothing says summer in the Berkshires like theater,” proclaims the website Berkshires.org. Smithsonian.com says the Berkshire hills are “alive with the sounds of Tanglewood plus modern dance, the art of Norman Rockwell and a tradition that goes back to Nathaniel Hawthorne.” Nestled within the rolling Appalachian Mountains, the Berkshires are the hotspot for highbrow theater lovers and just about everyone else who enjoys the arts, along with quaint towns to explore, picturesque forests, world-class dining, historic inns and B&Bs, museums and so much more. A combination of reasons makes the Berkshires a popular destination for a day trip – it is about a 90-minute drive from the Springfield area – or as a longer travel destination, notes Lindsey Schmid, vice president of Tourism and Marketing for 1Berkshire, the official regional economic development organization and regional tourism council of Berkshire County. “It is a combination of nature and culture that rolls into our summer theater season that brings people to our doorsteps. It’s a much higher caliber than summer stock. We’re a feeding ground for Off-Broadway and Broadway, where audiences can see a show for the first time before it hits New York,” Schmid said. “The idea is that you can come here for a show, but spend the entire day exploring the big outdoors and getting immersed in our culture before enjoying a superb meal followed by a night of theater. We have 30 towns and two cities and each downtown is unique with its own character, shopping opportunities, dining and lodgings,” she added. A look at some of the more popular performing arts and entertainment destinations in the Berkshires include:

July
Festivities BY KEITH O’CONNOR SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN Being away from home for the Fourth of July doesn’t mean you have to miss all the glitz and glamour of the patriotic holiday celebrating America’s independence. It was back on July 4, 1776, that delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Since that historic day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades, carnivals, and concerts to more informal backyard barbecues with family members and friends. And there are celebrations aplenty for Independence Day in Springfield and the surrounding communities. Springfield, founded by William Pynchon and established in 1636, celebrates its early colonial beginnings and its role in America’s history with their annual Star Spangled Springfield celebration, sponsored by MassMutual, on July 4th. Festivities at Riverfront Park in downtown Springfield begin at 6 p.m. with the lively sounds of student musicians from Falcetti Music in Springfield, followed by a concert featuring the genre-hopping sounds of Maxxtone, formed in Springfield in 2003. The night of fun comes to an end with an awe-inspiring display of pyrotechnics by Fireworks by Grucci at 9:30 p.m. If you are traveling with kids, there will be plenty to keep them amused throughout the evening from having their faces painted to watching a master balloon artist at work. Adding to their enjoyment will be bubble

machines filling the air with shiny, clear orbs, and the newly-renovated Riverfront Park also has a splash pad and fun playscapes to explore. Judith Matt, president of the Spirit of Springfield, organizers of the annual celebration of patriotic pride since 1989, notes she has a special place in her heart for national holidays such as the Fourth of July. “In a country divided, I can’t think of a better time for all of us to come together as one and proclaim our love of country and put our differences aside,” Matt said. Nothing but the best for Springfield and the many who come from surrounding towns to party on the Fourth, the centerpiece today of Star Spangled Springfield is an explosive fireworks display. The colorful tribute to America is created by Fireworks by Grucci, known as “the first family of fireworks,” who are considered one of the nation’s premier pyrotechnics entertainers and artists. “Our family has been blessed with great friends in Springfield. We look forward each year to designing a unique fireworks performance for the Spirit of Springfield,” said Felix James Grucci, president and CEO of Fireworks by Grucci, Inc. Synchronized to music broadcast on Mix 93.1 FM, the 20-minute fireworks display will be matched to such patriotic and fun tunes as “America the Beautiful” by LeeAnn Rimes, “America” by Neil Diamond, “Shining Star” by Earth, Wind & Fire, “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen, “God Bless America” by Lee Greenwood, “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa and
other memorable songs from today and yesterday. As rockets burst in the air, watchers on the ground will see the handiwork of shells spelling out U-S-A and others creating smiley faces. There will also be glittering waterfalls, chrysanthemums, as well as special ground effects. Food and other vendors will also populate the walkways of Riverfront Park. Other area Fourth of July celebrations, some held in June prior to the big day, include: AGAWAM – Six Flags New England and Coca-Cola have teamed up to offer their annual July 4th Fest from July 3-6 with brilliant fireworks accompanied by patriotic music and dancing nightly under the stars. Throughout the four-day celebration, the Main Street Gazebo will be the place to enjoy special games, live DJs, and other entertainment. Visit sixflags.com/ newengland for more information on hours, admission prices and more. Bring a can of Coca-Cola to the park to save on park admission. Six Flags is located on Route 159, 1623 Main St. AMHERST – Food, music, and live entertainment will set the stage for Amherst’s 4th of July Celebration beginning at 5 p.m. followed by fireworks at 9:30 p.m. The annual event takes place on the Fourth of July proper on the UMass Fields adjacent to McGuirk Alumni Stadium. CHICOPEE – Picturesque Szot Park, located on 687 Front St., will be the site of a birthday celebration of the red, white and blue on June 29. The family
event begins at 6:30 p.m. with music followed by the sights and sounds of fireworks at approximately 9:30 p.m. EAST LONGMEADOW – There will be fireworks after dusk on July 3 at Veterans Memorial Field on 60 Center Square, where the East Longmeadow Fourth of July Carnival is being held from June 30 to July 3 beginning nightly at 6 p.m. Organized by the East Longmeadow Rotary Club and Connecticut’s R.W. Commerford and Sons, the carnival features music, food, amusement rides and various vendors. Also, on the Fourth of July, the town’s old-fashioned display of liberty can be seen in their annual July 4th Parade, which is set to begin at 10 a.m. from East Longmeadow High School at 180 Maple St.

The celebration of all things American begins at 6 p.m. with music, food and special activities for children. Fireworks will begin bursting in air at dusk. Tanglewood BY KEITH O’CONNOR SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN Nestled in the Berkshires, the hills are alive with the sound of music this summer at Tanglewood. One of the premier summer music festivals in the world and summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1938, Tanglewood is located between Stockbridge and Lenox. (Do you think we need to say Massachusetts, I’m not sure) Tanglewood has something for everyone during its 2019 season which runs from June 15 to Labor Day. “One night you can see the next generation of students, we call them Tanglewood fellows, performing in recital, then the next you can see the world’s greatest artists on stage in the Shed with the Boston Symphony. There’s standard classical and romantic repertoire, but there are also contemporary works by today’s leading composers. We have films, informative talks, public masterclasses, open rehearsals, activities for families and children, cabaret acts, solo and chamber music recitals, and the list goes on and on,” said Anthony Fogg, the William I. Bernell Artistic Administrator and Director of Tanglewood. Major highlights include a concert

performance of Wagner’s complete “Die Walkure” with Christine Goerke, Amber Wagner, Stephanie Blythe, Simon O’Neill and James Rutherford joining Andris Nelsons and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra on July 27 and 28, and the world premiere of a new work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts, “The Brightness of Light,” based on letters of Georgia O’Keefe and Alfred Stieglitz, and featuring Renee Fleming and Rod Gilfry. Andris Nelsons also leads the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s July 5 opening night concert of “Mahler 5” and “Mozart Piano Concerto No. 22.” Fogg noted he is excited over this summer’s inaugural season of the new Tanglewood Learning Institute (TLI) and the opening of the new Linde Center for Music and Learning. “The just-completed buildings are a gorgeous addition to the Tanglewood campus, comprising three new stateof-the-art studios for performance and rehearsal, a spectacular new café space, and more. TLI Director Sue Elliott has curated an impressive list of guest presenters, including Madeleine Albright, Renee Fleming, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Yo-Yo Ma, and many others, to guide the curious toward greater knowledge and understanding both of
music and the wider world,” he said. The Boston Pops performs at Tanglewood several times this summer – part of the Popular Artists series – including three programs celebrating the art of Boston Pops Conductor Laureate John Williams. The first of these programs takes place on Sunday, July 7, with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and guest conductor David Newman featured in a program entitled “Across the Stars: Music of John Williams,” inspired by Mutter’s recent recording of the same name. The program will showcase the violinist in music from Williams’ iconic scores in brilliant new arrangements
created especially for her, including such familiar themes as “Star Wars” and “Memoirs of a Geisha,” as well as the haunting melodies of “Schindler’s List.” On Friday, August 16, Tanglewood presents “Star Wars: A New Hope,” a showing of the classic 1977 film with the Boston Pops Orchestra performing Williams’ familiar score, under the direction of Keith Lockhart, the Julian and Eunice Cohen Boston Pops Conductor. Long established as one of Tanglewood’s most anticipated and beloved evenings, John Williams’ Film Night returns on Saturday, August 24, with George and Roberta Berry Boston Pops Conductor Laureate John Williams introducing the festive evening, which features the Boston Pops and conductor David Newman performing a program celebrating the music of Hollywood and more. Also part of the Popular Artists series, James Taylor returns on July 3 and 4 for his only New England concert this summer and his 27th year performing at Tanglewood. In addition, Brian Wilson returns to Tanglewood with Pet Sounds on June 16, Train and the Goo Goo Dolls perform in the Shed with opening act Allen Stone on Aug. 5, British rock band Squeeze appear on Aug. 29, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue make their Tanglewood debut on Aug. 31. And the list continues with Josh Groban on July 2, Gladys Knight on Aug. 28, Reba McEntire on Sept. 1, Pat Benatar on Aug. 30, Earth, Wind and Fire on June 28, and still more. There is also plenty to do at Tanglewood when you are not enjoying the fantastic sounds surrounding you. “Gates to the grounds generally open a couple of hours early, providing an excellent opportunity to get settled, set up a picnic or dine at one of our on-campus cafes, or just stroll around the beautiful natural environment. For most Shed BSO performances, there

are pre-concert events, from Sunday Showcase talks in the theater to free Prelude concerts presented by Tanglewood fellows or BSO musicians,” Fogg said. And, Tanglewood is the “sound of perfection.” “The acoustics, whether you’re in the Koussevitzky Music Shed, on the lawn, in Seiji Ozawa Hall, or now at one of the Center for Music and Learning’s brand new performance venues, are simply spectacular. Sitting on the lawn with your friends and family, stretched out on a blanket or in your lawn chair in the shade or under the stars, while the gorgeous sound of the Boston Symphony Orchestra wafts through the air, has got to be one of the purest joys in life. Koussevitzky understood this when he founded the festival, and the connection between the incomparable natural beauty of the Berkshires and the world’s most accomplished musicians is at the very core of Tanglewood’s mission,” Fogg said. Tanglewood is located at 297 West St. in Lenox. For more information or tickets, visit bso.org or call 617-266-1200.

Storrowton
Village Museum
BY CORI URBAN SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN Summer is a busy time at Storrowton Village Museum from tours to special events to weddings. “It’s so much fun to see the village come alive in the summer,” enthused Jessica K. Fontaine, director. Often children run around the village green, and sometimes they are dressed in 19th century period clothing. A family-friendly place, Storrowton Village Museum offers living history programs and events to acquaint audiences of all ages to New England life in bygone days. Costumed docents guide visitors through the village on a tour of restored shops and houses, sharing stories about the buildings, artifacts and people who occupied them and their way of life in the 19th century. “This is definitely a museum for everyone,” Fontaine said. “We strive to ensure our programming is as inclusive as possible, something we’re continually improving upon. While we gear most of our programs to families with children, we make certain that there is something for people of all ages from standard guide-led tours to hands-on activities and games.” Popular exhibits include the
blacksmith shop and schoolhouse, the most-visited spaces. A team of volunteer blacksmiths staffs the blacksmith shop during special events, operating the coal forge to demonstrate the historic trade. The schoolhouse is a place where visitors can see how different and how much the same education is in comparison to today’s schools. Hands-on activities at the village including candle dipping, quill-pen calligraphy and old-fashioned games that add to a memorable day and can be included in tours for a nominal fee. Arrangements for activities must be made in advance. Summer tours will be offered June 18-Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tours are $7 per person, but children under 6 are free. To arrange a tour for a large group or for more details, call 413-2055051. Opening day for the village is June 15 when it will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The doors to the antique 18th- and 19th-century buildings will be open to begin the tour season with free, guided tours of the recreated village and Early American craft demonstrations. There will be a garden party on June 20 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Storrowton Village Museum to
celebrate the history and growth of its Aunt Helen’s Herb Garden and the beginning of the summer season. The early summer social will include drinks and light fare. “Little House” Family Day will take place July 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those who enjoy the book “Little House on the Prairie” will find a day full of all things Laura Ingalls Wilder. New this year will be “Storrowton Summer Saturdays,” every Saturday from June 15 through Aug. 17, offering a special themed day with activities throughout the day. At the end of the summer comes The Big E, Sept. 13-29. Visit Storrowton for free tours of the museum. “During the Big E it’s estimated that 40 percent of the 1.5 million visitors to the fair come to the village,” Fontaine said. Storrowton Village Museum is a department of the Eastern States Exposition, which is a not-for-profit corporation committed to excellence in providing year-round opportunities for the development and promotion of agriculture, education, industry and family entertainment while preserving New England heritage. “Storrowton truly embodies this mission by seeking to make the 19th century relevant to 21st-century learners,” Fontaine said.

HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES
AT THE VILLAGE INCLUDE CANDLE DIPPING, QUILLPEN CALLIGRAPHY AND OLD-FASHIONED GAMES
“Understanding where we’ve come from helps us appreciate how much we’ve grown and how much we’ve stayed the same as a society,” she continued. “There is much to be proud of, particularly for those native to New England” where many historic trades grew and thrived. Storrowton Village Museum was created by Helen O. Storrow at a time when women were just beginning to be public leaders. “Helen was ahead of her time in preservation of New England, and we take pride in honoring her work at the Eastern States and beyond,” Fontaine said. Osborne was born into a prosperous manufacturer’s home; her mother was a socially conscious Quaker. In 1926, Helen Osborne Storrow was decorating a temporary structure to depict an early American kitchen. An active trustee of the Eastern States Exposition and chairwoman of the Home Department, she dreamed of moving the handicraft exhibit to an actual home on site — a building with its own kitchen. She discussed the possibility with friends and eventually was introduced to Arthur Gilbert, commissioner of agriculture for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, who told her about his 18th-century summer home. She purchased the farmstead for $200 and moved it from West Brookfield in 1927. After that, additional antique buildings were purchased, dismantled and reconstructed to create Storrowton Village. More than eighty years after its creation, the village continues her mission to offer a backdrop for families to see and learn about the heritage and history of New England. Storrowton Village Museum is located at 1305 Memorial Ave., West Springfield. For more information and program fees, call 413-205-5051. Storrowton Village Museum’s website is storrowtonvillage.com.

Summer is a busy time at
Berkshire East BY CORI URBAN SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN Berkshire East Mountain Resort is more than coasting when it comes to summer fun. In recent years the resort has added a slate of summer activities to make it a four-season resort, revitalized in the past seven years by a series of investments. Located in the Western Massachusetts town of Charlemont, Berkshire East Mountain Resort isn’t just for winter sports. In warmer weather it offers one of North America’s longest mountain coasters; two aerial adventure parks that offer unique suspended challenge courses; zip lining on a Valley Jump Tour, a Mountain Top Tour and a Base Area Tour; whitewater rafting on the Millers, Deerfield and West rivers; and mountain biking with an expanded intermediate terrain.

“Berkshire East is really situated perfectly to grow into a year-round adventure destination,” said Gabriel Porter-Henry, director of marketing. In 2016 and 2017 Thunder Mountain Bike Park was named the #1 bike park on the East Coast by voting fans of MTBParks.com. Berkshire East has brought in some of the industry’s top trail-building teams to build a progressive park that not only has advanced trails for experienced riders but also has beginner trails that make the sport accessible for all abilities. “If you ride a bike, downhill is really something you should try,” Porter-Henry said. “We have been seeing an increase in families participating and getting into the sport.” The resort offers rentals, lessons and a progression of trails to allow people to enter the sport. Throughout the ski industry,
resorts are shifting to more year-round activities to supplement the winter ski season. “Berkshire East is uniquely positioned to make this shift due to our location and the whitewater opportunities provided by the Deerfield River,” he said. People are looking for activities that they can do with the whole family as well as for exciting and adventurous experiences, and the emergence of ziplining is a good example. “It takes virtually no experience to participate and the sensation of flying almost 200 feet in the air at 50 miles per hour is certainly a unique one and one that people remember for a long time,” Porter-Henry said. “Gone are the days that ski areas are looking to sell a bit of real estate by adding in a golf course. People want fun activities that are accessible.” Activities at Berkshire East begin with those for children as young three

years. “So there is an adventure for everyone,” PorterHenry said. Visitors for activities there include families, groups of friends, company outings and school groups. Berkshire East Mountain Resort has a long history of skiing, which began on Mt. Institute in the mid-1950s when Arthur Parker opened a small rope tow operation that was 200 feet vertical and featured two rope tows. “When it opened (and) for the following 60 years, Berkshire East was simply a ski destination,” PorterHenry said. “Today, we are a year-round resort with a variety of activities. The ski area itself is totally different as well. With the improvements of snowmaking we see great skiing throughout the winter.” The slopes opened last year before Thanksgiving, and the season ran until April 6. The resort’s Warfield House Inn is situated along and above the Deerfield River. This newly renovated inn is a retreat for those looking for upscale inn, dining and wedding facilities. One of the first improvements made when Jim Schaefer bought the mountain in 2007 was to invest in sustainable energy to power it. “We have a 900 kw wind turbine and 500 kw solar field that produces the electricity we need to operate on an annual basis,” Porter-Henry said. “We were the first ski area in the world to be able to produce our annual needs sustainable and onsite.” Overall, Berkshire East’s expansion to a four-season resort means more jobs throughout the year and more customers for local businesses. “The more people that come to the mountain, the more people buy gas, visit

the area’s restaurants and stay at some of the unique inns and B & Bs we have here, hopefully the better Berkshire East does, the better our local community can thrive and vise versa,” Porter-Henry said. Charlemont, located in Franklin County, is about 45 minutes from Northampton and an hour from Springfield. “It is a really easy day trip to do one of our activities,” PorterHenry said. “Many people may stop in for a coaster ride on the way to Mass MOCA (the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams) or pair their adventures with a nice evening out in Shelburne Falls. I think people often think they need to travel farther north to Vermont and other more well known destinations, but the reality is that we have world-class activities right here.” For more information, go online to berkshireeast.com or call 413-339-6617.

New England
Air Museum BY CORI URBAN SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN John J. Lopez, of Springfield, takes his 5-year-old son, Jonathan, to the New England Air Museum almost every weekend; during vacation weeks, they have been known to visit three times. “Every time we go it’s like the first time,” he said. “We both love planes, and I love watching him point to a plane he’s seen multiple times and say, ‘Look Daddy a Sikorsky!’” The New England Air Museum is an aerospace museum at 36 Perimeter Road, Windsor Locks. It is committed to presenting the story of aviation, the human genius that made it possible and the profound effects that it has had on the way in which people live. This is achieved preserving and presenting historically significant aircraft and related artifacts; engaging visitors through high-quality exhibits that help them understand aviation technology, history and the stories of the men and women who built, flew and made history with these machines; and inspiring students

through innovative and hands-on education programs delivered onsite and in schools that allow them to discover and reflect on aviation technology and history and its ties to social studies, science, geography and technical advancements. The museum houses more than 80 aircraft and an extensive collection of engines, instruments, aircraft parts, uniforms and personal memorabilia. Within this collection is a Sikorsky VS-44A, donated by its previous owner, actress Maureen O’Hara, and restored to original condition; a restored B-29 Superfortress; an 1870 Silas Brooks balloon basket believed to be the oldest surviving aircraft in the United States; the 1912 Bunce-Curtiss Pusher, the oldest surviving Connecticutbuilt airplane; the Sikorsky S-39, the oldest surviving Sikorsky aircraft; and a Kaman K-225 helicopter, the oldest surviving Kaman-built aircraft. The museum gets about 60,000 visitors annually, and with three climate-controlled exhibit hangars and more than 50 historic aircraft on
display, it’s an indoor destination in the winter as well as a cool respite from the summer heat. Special events and activities run throughout the year. The Soar into Summer program runs from June 22-Aug. 17, culminating with an annual National Aviation Day Open Cockpit on Aug. 17. Soar into Summer offers visitors a variety of daily activities with museum admission, including climb-aboard experiences in historic aircraft, computer flight simulators and interactive flight-science demonstrations, as well as special themed activities that change from week to week. For example, during Space Week (July 15-21), visitors can learn about local connections to NASA spacesuits and make a marshmallow constellation to take home. “These themed activities allow our younger visitors to make connections to our collection in fun, meaningful ways while also learning more about the history and science of aviation,” said Amanda Goodheart Parks, the
museum’s director of education. “We have the largest collection of historic aircraft in New England, but we’re also one of the only aerospace museums in the country that allows visitors inside the aircraft.” Whether visitors are eight years old or 80, an aviation buff or a first time visitor, “there’s nothing quite like sitting in the cockpit of a supersonic jet,” she said. “We also have an incredible group of staff and volunteers, many of whom are former pilots, veterans or retirees from the aerospace industry, who help bring the stories of these aircraft to life for our visitors. Where else in this area can you peek inside a World War II era aircraft and speak to a veteran who served during that war, or climb into a helicopter and meet an engineer who helped design it? Only at the New England Air Museum.”

Asked about the must-see exhibits at the museum, Lopez said that’s a tough question because everything should be seen. But the Sikorsky VS-44 and the B-29 got his vote. “Both are huge planes with so much history,” he said. Among the family activities that take place at the museum are

Aircraft Quest Scavenger Hunts, a KidsPort and Imagination Dress Up Area, a Paper Plane Activity Station, computerized flight simulators and Soarin’ Story Time. “I’ve found our hands-on approach to engaging visitors is appreciated by adults as well as children, especially during special events like Women Take
Flight, SPACE EXPO and Open Cockpit Days,” Parks said. The museum also offers several programs specifically for adults including guided tours, an annual speaker series, the museum’s travel program and Business After Hours networking events. While the museum’s spaceflight collection currently focuses on the Apollo and Shuttle eras, staff is working with local aerospace companies to develop new exhibits about the next generation of space exploration including such topics as commercial/civilian space flight, future NASA missions to Mars. The Connecticut Aeronautical Historical Society, the parent organization of NEAM, was founded in 1959 and the museum has been at its current location since 1981. “The museum is such a fun place, and the fact it’s close to Bradley (International) Airport adds to the experience,” Lopez said. “You can hear/ see planes taking off; there’s even a lookout area that you can see Bradley from the B-29 hangar. My son has an absolute blast every time we go.” For more information go to neam.org.

Summer heats up at
MGM MGM Springfield opened its doors last year in August just as summer was winding down. But this summer it’s gangbusters as MGM Springfield has planned several months of big name talent and local favorites from Aerosmith to Air Supply, top-notch comedians, a music and arts fest, outdoor concerts, and even a celebration of the culinary arts with “Food Truck Fridays.” “Entertainment is at the heart of MGM Springfield. We’re committed to bringing the best to downtown and energizing the city with an eclectic mix of artists. The best is yet to come as MGM LIVE will heat up the outdoor summer concert scene and enrich the downtown beat all season long,” said Talia Spera, executive director of Entertainment, MGM Springfield.

Best treats
at Six Flags BY TIERA N. WRIGHT Special to The Republican
“We don’t count calories here at Six Flags” says Jennifer McGrath, Communications Manager of Six Flags New England as she guided me on my culinary journey through the park. That’s right, a culinary journey is to be had at Six Flags New England, and yes, I’m talking about the amusement park. A day at Six Flags is meant to be carefree and fun; adds McGrath, “guests are here to have the best day and indulge in theme park classics.” Gone are the days of pizza, hot dogs and burgers (although if that’s your preference, these options are still available). “We want to ensure we provide the best service and freshly prepared foods,” says McGrath. “All of our food is made to order [and therefore] we can change and customize any of our dishes based on customer feedback.” Six Flags New England is ushering in a new era of food; and they are approaching their dining options, like the new rides launched each season—with innovation, spectacle and style.

New to the park this year, Chop Six is an Asian cuisine inspired restaurant that serves up classic Chinese dishes with a side of world play. “The kitchen has a three-foot wok,” shares McGrath. “We are serving the highest quality food and strive to be fast, efficient and safe.” Featuring four different entrees: Orange Chicken, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Beef & Broccoli and Tofu Veggie; each meal is served with Fried Rice and Chow Mein, the latter of which is served with White Rice and an Egg Roll. Additionally, each meal is complete with a set of chopsticks and a

fortune cookie. Leaving no condiment stone unturned, Chop Six also has soy sauce and sweet & sour available.
COASTER CREAMERY
Coaster Creamery

Who doesn’t love ice cream? By far my favorite spot on this tour, Coaster Creamy takes ice cream and milkshakes to the next level. Waffle cones are out, Bubble Cones are in. Bubble Cones are almost like a cross between cake and waffle batter. Made to order, every cone is hot and fresh out of the “oven” and filled with one to two scoops of ice cream and as many toppings as you can handle. But the cherry on top of Coaster Creamery’s sundae of confectionary delight are their Thrill Shakes. Housed in a commemorative cup, Six Flag’s Thrill Shakes are “sinfully amazing.” With flavorful shakes like Cookie Blast, Peanut Butter Delight, and Birthday Party; parkgoers will admire the art that goes into creating these shakes and the taste even more. The Unicorn Surprise Thrill Shake, which I had the pleasure of trying, had a base of rainbow sprinkles, cotton candy ice cream, topped with rainbow sprinkles and candy “sushi rolls”—which was cotton candy wrapped in sour candy stripes; the cup’s rim was vanilla frosted covered in lucky charms. With several flavors and toppings to choose from, McGrath says, “you can create any flavor Thrill Shake; the sky’s the
limit.” Also new this year is Coaster Creamery’s Artic Coke Machine, which turns a 20 oz soda into a slushy in a matter of seconds right before parkgoers’ eyes.
COASTER CANDY
Filled with a cornucopia of confections, Coaster Candy would make even Willy Wonka proud. “Everything is made fresh daily onsite, nothing is pre-purchased; the caramel is made from scratch,” says McGrath. Mouthwatering before you even enter, parkgoers can witness apples being dipped into a huge vat of caramel from Coaster Candy’s picture window. Upon entering, the front display case is lined with several treats such as candy apples, chocolate confections, cookies & cream, and seasonal treats like the carrot cake fudge. Silky and decadent, other fudge options range from the traditional to the innovative and include the likes of snickers, cinnamon bun and strawberry cheesecake.
MAIN STREET SWEET SHOPPE For those looking for traditional amusement park sweets and snacks, look no further than Main Street Sweet Shoppe. Parkgoers can indulge in the finest of soft serve ice cream, Italian ice, popcorn and giant pretzels. Fried dough and funnel cake lovers alike
can also get their fix. With traditional toppings such as powdered sugar and pizza sauce Main Street Sweet Shoppe also allows parkgoers to jazz up their fried dough or funnel cake with several sundae options. Whether you choose the Strawberry Sundae or the Caramel Apple Sundae; there is always room for dessert and more than enough to go around.
FILLING STATION
The Filling Station is home to the Conewich. Parkgoers can select their choice of BBQ Pulled Pork or Buffalo Chicken Bites to sit on a bed of Classic Yellow or White Cheddar Mac & Cheese stuffed inside what can only be describe as a “twisted bagel”. The pulled pork is smoked daily in the onsite smoker, giving parkgoers those traditional smoky flavors BBQ connoisseurs dream of. The Filling Station is also where those with the commemorative Six Flags cups can go and refill the beverages for free.

MACHO NACHO’S BURRITOS
Macho Nacho, which has been at Six Flags for a couple of seasons now, is a Mexican restaurant serving up favorites such as nachos, tacos and burritos. “Every bite is an adventure,” explains McGrath, as the restaurant allows parkgoers to have a fully customizable experience. Set up buffet style, patrons can go down the line, choosing their own ingredients and toppings, such as guacamole, sour cream and chipotle ranch dressing, to make endless combinations of their taco salads, rice bowls, nacho supreme, etc. Considering Burritos are in the name, this is the most popular choice among parkgoers; and the tortilla warmers Macho Nacho has on hand are a bonus. All meals are served with nacho chips. Additional park favorites include JB’s Smokehouse BBQ, Johnny Rockets, Fast Eddie’s Diner, and Go Fresh Café, which “specializes in healthier options, such as salads, fruits, and lighter fare.” With Six Flags being a family destination, McGrath shares that most of the food options in the park are “portable, easy to transport, and sharable.” While McGrath didn’t coin the term “daycation,” it’s certainly a fitting synonym for parkgoer’s day-long experience at the park. Comprised of ten different areas, a myriad of rides, attractions and events Six Flags’ everexpanding and eclectic menu options are sure to make a trip to the park even more memorable. Navigating
the park has gotten easier as well with the addition of the Six Flags mobile app, which launched in 2015. Adds Jennifer, “the Six Flags app is your tool for success here at the park; it shows everything from food to events, rides, etc.” Also in the works, is Mobile Dining, set to launch later this season through the app, parkgoers will have the ability to order food and not worry about leaving their place in a ride line. “There is no better way to experience Six Flags New England than with a Season Pass or park membership,” say McGrath, “with so many reasons to visit all year long, it is the best value and comes with exclusive rewards and benefits.” Additionally, not only will Season Pass
holders and Members have unlimited visits to the park, but they can also purchase Season Dining Passes— which includes lunch, a snack and dinner, every time they come to the park. The Dining Pass is applicable at most restaurants in the park, including Chop Six, and they are labeled as such; parkgoers can also find dining pass restaurants in the app. Currently, memberships are on sale for as low as $6.50; to learn more visit Six Flags New England’s website. For more information and the most current park operating hours, visit www.sixflags.com/newengland.

Outdoor
Dining Guide FEEL LIKE DINING “AL FRESCO” NOW THAT THE WARMER WEATHER HAS ARRIVED? BY KEITH O’CONOR Special to The Republican The Italian term, which is translated as “in the cool,” is actually not used in Italy to refer to eating in the open outdoors, and the expression more often for them means spending time in jail! In Italy, when dining outside, they use the word “all’aperto” or “all’aria aperta” or even “fuori.” Whatever you choose to call it, as a visitor to the area you will find plenty of opportunities to relax in an informal outdoor dining environment at many close-by restaurants. In East Longmeadow, Center Square Grill at 84 Center Square has numerous times been voted “Number One” in the Best Outdoor Dining category in the annual Reader Raves poll by The Republican and MassLive readers.
“We’ve offered outdoor dining since we opened Center Square Grill five years ago. We started with just a couple of potted plants in the outdoor space, but have over the years added an iron fence enclosing the area with additional flowers hanging from the fence. It’s prettier now…..I like to call it an oasis that overlooks a large parking lot,” said owner Bill Collins. “I once opened the outdoor area in February when we had an unbelievable hot snap. This is New England and we are built to withstand the snow and cold weather, but we embrace the spring after a long, cold winter and open our outdoor dining space as soon as the weather warms,” he added. Should it begin to rain, there are umbrellas at the tables to shelter you from the storm. For cooler times, there is a “fire element” to warm diners up, said Collins, and there is piped in music to soothe the soul. New to the local restaurant scene, the expanding 110 Grill chain opened a restaurant at Holyoke Mall in December, offering an upscale, yet

casual atmosphere for diners, including an outdoor patio with fire pits, which they will begin to use for the summer. Also, the popular Uno Pizzeria & Grill located near the Basketball Hall of Fame on 820 Hall of Fame Ave. (West Columbus Avenue) in Springfield offers a summer courtyard music series with live music and a full menu seven nights a week, weather-permitting. “The atmosphere in our summer courtyard, especially when a band is playing, is fun, relaxing and like being on a little vacation. There is a shaded area and an area to take in the sun, so as long as there are tables available you can choose your preference. The music and food are good and the fresh air is relaxing,” said Amy Silvestri, general manager.
The popular restaurant offers a summer courtyard drink menu, also available indoors, with fishbowls and special drinks that they don’t offer the rest of the year. Yet another new opportunity for a good munch outdoors, MGM Springfield has introduced Food Truck Fridays bringing local eats to downtown Springfield from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Friday. The culinary bonanza includes three original concept food trucks from MGM Springfield, serving tacos, gelato and Asian-inspired dishes. A variety of other popular food trucks from across the region, such as Wahlburgers, Hot Oven Cookies, and Say Cheese, will be offered on a rotating schedule. 110 Grill
