GATEWAY CLASS PRESIDENT, GRACE VAN BUREN Embarking upon this school year, walking into the building the first day and hoping for nothing but the best, we never expected what was to come. Everyone always says how “your senior year is the best” and we couldn’t wait to get it started. However, what was supposed to be one of the most fun years of our lives, turned into one of the scariest, as a wave of global crisis emerged. I never expected that early dismissal to be our last day with each other. Many of us fell into grief for the loss of our senior experience, and we soon discovered the true meaning of perseverance. From completing assignments on time and AP test preparation, to tribulations and celebrations, we discovered how to adapt to life as seniors, even if it meant under our own roofs. We grew closer to our families, and found peace in connection. Quarantine didn’t define our senior year, but brought it to new

heights and allowed us to self-evaluate the things most important. Out of all this chaos, that seems to grow and grow, I find myself reflecting on the times we were fortunate enough to have. I reminisce back to October, the leaves had just changed and the air was getting crisp, we all were getting closer and closer to the end of our college search. Just the thought of leaving the little towns we came from seemed so monumental and so distant, yet here we are, one foot already out the door. Just like the seasons, we changed. We grew and we adjusted. The
harshness of winter biting at our ankles, until early March finally allowed warmth (or what we know as New England warmth). Throughout those months, we made memories and friends that we had never had before. We cheered on our classmates as they battled in intense games, acted out Macbeth, learned physics, played in concerts for our families, danced the night away on Valentine’s Day, and took so many photos to prove it. The moments that 2020 did gift us are the moments that will last. These are the moments that are worth a lifetime. As we continue to grow and time passes, the kids we grew up with since elementary school seem not so small anymore. That’s what is wonderful about having a such a small school, we’ve been through everything together, every step, every struaggle, we’ve been by each other’s side, hand in hand. To the Class of 2020, our class, and the strongest class I will ever know, I will forever cherish this year, for it has been the most adventurous and definitely most interesting year of our lives. I wish you all the absolute best.
HOPSON Continued from page 2
hope that you’ll also consider living out these lyrics from Thomas Rhett’s new song, “Be a Light. In a time full of war, be peace. In a time full of doubt, just believe. Yeah, there ain't that much difference between you and me. In a time full of war, be peace. In a world full of hate, be a light. When you do somebody wrong, make it right. Don't hide in the dark, you were born to shine. In a world full of hate, be a light. In a place that needs a change, make a difference. In a time full of noise, just listen 'Cause life is but a breeze, better live it. In a place that needs a change, make a difference.” You’ve demonstrated the ability to model those traits with your classmates, the underclassmen, our
staff and your parents despite challenges and turbulent times. As you move even more rapidly into ‘adulthood’ (however you wish to describe that) you’ll find it more difficult to hew to your values, follow your dreams, and create a meaningful life for yourself and others in which you can - as the lyrics indicate - be peace, just believe, be a light, just listen, make it right, and make a difference. I wish you the best as you graduate, hope you’re able to make the choices that mean the most to you, succeed in reaching your goals, and the understanding that you can make a positive difference in your life, in your community, and in the world.
GATEWAY MISSION STATEMENT To provide a comprehensive and developmental program that fosters the academic, career and personal/social growth of all students. In collaboration with other educators, families and the community, we are committed to ensuring all students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to be effective students, productive citizens in a global society and lifelong learners.

Class of 2020, Your journey as a student at St. Mary’s High School is coming to an end. It has not al-
ways been a clear path and all of you have weathered some really big storms to get to where you are today. You came in as a large freshmen class in 2016 and never looked back. As sophomores you were given some unsettling news that your beloved school was in danger of closing at the end of the 2018 school year. All of you pulled together with an insurgence of dedicated alumni, families, teachers, and community members and showed others how much your school meant to you. It’s amazing that all of you decided to keep the faith and stay at St. Mary’s with the hopes and belief that you would graduate as a Saint in 2020. Your senior year had a wonderful start and as it progressed you had many accolades in sports, club activities, drama performances, college acceptances, and a lot of scholarship money being awarded
for all of your hard work throughout the years. Spring rolled in like a lion and continued to be that way. As a senior class you had to sit back and watch as the final months of your High School years were spent learning from home due to the school being closed because of COVID-19. All of you felt a rush of feelings that led to you being concerned about Prom, Class Night, Senior Week, and Graduation. This turned out to be the biggest challenge of your time here at St. Mary’s. Each and every one of you handled it like all other obstacles that were thrown your way, with grace, integrity, faith, and persistence as the time passed. It won’t be long before you enter the church, and walk down the aisle to receive your diploma. At St. Mary’s, you are blessed to have a commencement ceremony in the church, witnessed by God, and celebrated by Bishop Rozan-
ski, Fr. Salatino, and Dr. Baillargeon. Please take the time to pray and talk with our Lord about the many gifts in your lives, your future plans, and overall guidance as you begin the next chapter in your journey. All of you have worked so hard and I am very proud to call you a fellow Alum. As you move on to bigger and better things, please keep in mind that there is no bigger or better thing than your relationship with God. There will be times in your life that you will look up to the heavens, or close your eyes, and ask God why. Trust in your faith during these times as you have throughout your years at St.
Mary’s and it will lead you to the answer you may be looking for. Please keep in mind as you venture off to college, the military, or enter the workforce, you are the future and you will be preparing every day for the rest of your life. The world around you is ever changing, and it is very important to embrace that change and become who you want to be. Your years at St. Mary’s may have seemed like a long journey, but in reality, it was just a very short chapter in your book of life. I wish all of you the best as you go out and write the next chapter. God bless all of you!!! - Mr. Collins
SALUTATORIAN, AARON KIELBASA Over my career at St. Mary's I have held many different titles and every single one of them has been an honor. I have been a friend, a president, an athlete, a tutor, an assistant director, a representative, and many other things. But above all else, it was always my greatest privilege to be called a Saint. I was proud to wake up every day and see the people that made school so much fun and to be part of a community of truly wonderful people. I will forever be thankful for the teachers who always put in the extra mile to get me to succeed and the students who were always so ready to welcome a new student or lend a helping hand. These put together made excelling very easy for me ,and I know as I leave St. Mary's and move on to UMass Amherst I will bring the strong Catholic morals and academic preparedness that STM has instilled in me. I've had a lot of opportunities over the years as a saint. Academically I have joined classes of hard working kids to band together as a group of scholars always willing to work together or come in for extra

help. Athletically I was always encouraged to go and try new things. That is how I came to be captain of both the cross country and tennis teams. My teammates were always so helpful and made sports a joy even if we did lose every so often. Outside of these I grew as a person a number of ways aiding and eventually leading our outstanding drama club. I joined many different clubs and held office in many of them. I learned to lead and work as an efficient team through my various class offices. That is what being a Saint is all about. Learning. Growing. Being the best person you can be.

It provided me a new journey to embark on having never gone to a Catholic school prior and it truly has opened many doors for me, some I didn't even know were possible. I was able to thrive in the smaller class sizes and learned valuable lessons I can take with me on all of my future endeavors, as well as, priceless laughs and memories. The school is filled with dedicated teachers and staff members who go out of their way to make sure they help us succeed by supporting us in and outside of the classroom at events like sports games, drama production (which are always fantastic), to staying after school for extra help, and even coming in on weekends to make sure we stay on pace and receive a quality edu-

cation that aligns with Catholic values. These values also extend to the family environment that encompasses the school, the catholic education I am so fortunate to have received at STM gave me a family beyond my own. I felt safe to express myself and try new things like running for offices and participating in multiple sports at the high school level where I was even captain for three years on both the soccer and tennis teams. I have made lifelong friends and am excited for the future knowing I have the great foundation that STM offers as I plan to attend Quinnipiac University in the fall. My time at STM was invaluable and I grew academically as well as tremendously in my faith. I am so grateful to all of the teachers, classmates, coaches, and faculty members that have made my time at STM so magical! My time at Saint Mary's was very crucial in molding the student, and individual that I am today. There are an endless number of qualities and characteristics that made Saint Mary's the perfect school for me, and for so many others, and I'd like to share a few. I was surrounded by peers and friends who were motivated and determined to excel. Having classmates
to not only offer support and guidance to each other, but also push one another to succeed, is an important attribute that the academics at Saint Mary's granted all of us. Every class I took was extremely rewarding and challenging, but St. Mary's presented an inspiring environment that made me want to do well on each and every assignment. Having smaller class sizes allowed for a very open and communicative relationship with all of my teachers. Whether I needed to stay after school for a bit, or even extending the classroom time to weekends, our teachers were always willing to help me
and all of my peers with all assignments, quizzes, or tests. The environment at Saint Mary's is very much family-like. Participation is universal among all students, and throughout all grades. Holding officer positions for a number of different clubs, and attending different events and functions throughout the year really showcased the tightknit community that Saint Mary's offers. We all were dedicated and influenced by one another to better our community and our school at all times. another very important part of my STM experience. Catholic values of community service, giving back, caring, and respect were instilled in all of us throughout our time at St. Mary's. rest. Our class is remarkable not only by what happened to us, but because of all of you. You all took a dreadful situation and turned it around and became an inspiration to every class above and below us. As you all get
your diplomas one way or another, just know that, yes, it wasn’t the most traditional way, but it doesn’t mean your community has forgotten. Everyone in your family, in your community, everywhere around the world is in awe of every single one of you. I hope all of you succeed. I have full confidence you all will be the best mechan-
ics, pilots, engineers, nurses, doctors, chefs, machinists, and much more. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your president for the past three years and I wish all of you the best of luck in whichever path you take. Joseph Ruffo President, Class of 2020

Dear Class of 2020, Four years ago, as grade 9 students, most of you entered either Westfield High School or Westfield Technical Academy. I bet your school seemed enormous and maybe even intimidating. As time passed, you found your way around, made new friends, experienced a lot of opportunities, and gained much knowledge. Now you are ready to leave Westfield Public Schools with skills that present you with the opportunity to continue your education, enter the job market, or the military. Whichever path that you have chosen, you are on the brink of a new chapter in your lives. Take a moment to look back and to see and appreciate just how far you have come. Graduation is an opportunity for you and your family and friends to recognize your accomplishments. This school year, on March 16, we were all forced out of our comfort zones. We all had to try new things. Sure, it was intimidating at first, but you all rose to the occasion and remained determined to finish your senior year. While the loss of Senior Week activities was devastating, your ability to adapt to a unique and unprecedented situation demonstrates your diligence and perseverance. Fortunately, we will be able to hold restricted outdoor commencement ceremonies on Bullens

Field. Westfield Technical Academy students will graduate on Thursday, July 30 and Westfield High School on Friday, July 31. Finally, know that you will all be missed, and that we will remember you fondly. I speak on behalf of the Westfield School Committee and all the faculty and staff in the Westfield Public Schools on wishing you incredible adventures, amazing experiences, and the journey of a lifetime. Remember to remain positive. There is already plenty of negativity in our world, especially under our current circumstances. Keep in mind that things turn out for the best for those who make the best out of the way things turn out. I look forward to seeing you on July 30 and 31. Congratulations and best of luck to the Class of 2020! Sincerely, Stefan Czaporowski Superintendent of Schools Westfield Public Schools

CLASS PRESIDENT, MARISA CLARK Dear Class of 2020, Over the last two years I have imagined addressing the class dozens of times, and I never thought it would be an email. There are a lot of things I am still processing even a month into quarantine. I still cannot quite wrap my head around that I will never take another class in Westfield High School, I assumed there would be many more, it felt like too many more, and then they were gone. It’s really difficult to envision the end of the year we had had planned and not feel robbed. Everything we had planned was a great celebration of us and our achievements. We would be foolish to reduce our years in high school, or even our years in school to this final semester. All the events we had coming up were the great finale of our years of school, but

major cultural reset is our chance to raise our voices and advocate for our future. The planet is still overheating, political rifts divide us, they’re taking ‘the Office’ off Netflix, these are very real threats. It is finally our chance to make the change we want. Find the thing you're passionate about and educate yourself. Vote. You have a voice that should be used! There’s so much pressure right now to get our lives in perfect order, to plan our futures. It’s hard to not feel paralyzed but indecision. It’s okay if you don’t have it all figured out, no one does, but indecision and regret are worse than failure. Failure is terrifying but it’s also definitive and productive, there is nothing to be gained from regret. The academic, social, and professional risks we take shape us. The things you’re passionate about are going to change through the years and that’s one of the best parts of life. So change your mind six or seven times, make a huge mistake, admit you’re wrong, ask a stupid question, but never leave
they are not what define us. We are defined by our sports victories, stage talent, spirit, academic excellence, artist talent, music skill, and energy we brought to the school. 2020 is notorious because we are loud and proud, when our class banded together, it was obvious we shared a sense of unity by being 2020. We’re a progressive and passionate generation that left a positive mark on Westfield High. We are not only being thrust into the world of adulthood, but we will join society as full adults just as we’re reopening the world. Two very daunting concepts, but there is something so empowering about being the first generation of adults out of this. This Please see Clark page 26

yourself hanging. Owe it to yourself to always take the scary opportunities and never deny yourself the chance to grow. We have so many plans that feel so precarious, but that does not make them less exciting! We got into college! We have jobs! The celebration may look different this year, but that does not mean it’s not amazing. We are good people and the world needs good people. If you are anything, be good, be kind. Thank you to every teacher, staff member, parent and community member who has invested their talents and time in 2020. We will make you proud, and as someone who has been honored to have seen the best in this class, I know we already have.

To the White Oak School Class of 2020, Your senior year certainly didn’t go as planned; however, the fact remains that the seven of you had made your mark on our school community long before March. You’ve been star athletes on the basketball court, soccer field, cross country route, and in Ultimate Frisbee tournaments. You’ve held internships in the fields of construction, agriculture, assisted living services and physical education while balancing your schoolwork. You’ve had jobs and taken college courses while being high school students with long commutes and extra school hours. You’ve made memories through school trips and activities, including outdoor education camping and fishing trips, adventure club outings, proms, class meetings and group travel. All of these things you take with you as you leave White Oak School. There are also so many things you leave behind. You’ve been Student Council

WHITE OAK CLASS PRESIDENT, ALLISON CASTEN To the Class of 2020, For most people, the last three months of their 13 years of education is a time to celebrate all that we have accomplished. From the hours spent in the classroom and on homework to the sports and clubs you dedicated your afternoons to. It is a hard reality to face that our time to celebrate and be honored is now being taken away, not to mention all the friends we are forced to leave behind without getting to have a proper goodbye. But in my eyes, I believe that things happen for a reason and this experience was put in our lives to make us all stronger people. I am so grateful to have all the amazing memories I had at my high school. Those things can never be taken away from me. I also want to give a special “Thank you!” to my fellow class of 2020 classmates for keeping life interesting and giving me a chance to have fun every once and a while. I will always have a special place in my heart for all of you and I know there is nothing but success in your future. Thanks for the laughs! A Message to White Oak, I never thought I would have to write a message like this, and gosh is it hard to write, but life has

led me here. White Oak School may just be a school to an outsider looking in, but for me and many others that have been a part of the school’s community, it is a home. I am the person I am today because of what I learned at school. I learned crucial ways for me to be successful in day-to-day life after high school, such as how to take good notes from a class lecture, how to write a proper essay, how to take care of my finances, and the history of this country and how it impacts the way we live today. I have also learned how to be a good friend and how to be a leader when I need to. To me, everyone there is my family, and it is tough to say goodbye to your family so abruptly. But I know that I will always have a place there even when I am old and gray. Thank you to my White Oak Family for everything that you have done for me. I love you.
