Get out of that fall decorating rut ‘Why not elevate your pumpkin and change up your colors?’

“I love the colors of the moody blue skies this time of year, the way the plants look after the first frost, the golds of the cornfields after harvest and the purplish shadows at twilight.”

Figure out what colors you’re drawn to and how you could supplement with fruits, vegetables, berries, rose hips or herbs, she says. “Think outside your normal field of colors,” she says. If you’re going to be choosing some paint for your DIY projects, have an idea what you want before you get to the wall of chips, “otherwise you will be paralyzed by the options,” she says. “Think of the way colors relate to each other.” After deciding on her own palette for this year, inspired by the farms, water and sky around her town in autumn, she want to a Benjamin Moore store and selected Evening

Dove, Gossamer Blue, Mustard Field and Creamy Custard. The grayish blue related to her great-grandmother’s Wedgwood Queensware plates, which are grayish lavender and used for special occasions. Oliver experiments with new ideas for seasonal decorating and makes sure she has a changing display of flowers and other plants. “I enjoy changing it up. But of course, people also do expect it from me when they come over.” Here’s a peek at some of Oliver’s projects, with plenty of ideas for getting out of your own autumn decorating rut.

She also offers classes. Oliver says if you want to change up your Thanksgiving (or any holiday look), go to a garden center with a plan and a color palette in mind. “It’s hard to imagine a different approach when you are already in the store and the aisles are filled with orange and black things,” she says. “Check out your own yard first, and make a list of greens, leaves, branches, pine cones and pods that you can use.”

3123909-01

“I always like to avoid the cliches of fall,” she says. “Why not elevate your pumpkin and change up your colors?” Instead of the traditional oranges and burgundys, Oliver takes inspiration from the subtle changes of color and texture she sees in the rolling hills and the fading gardens around her 1820 farmhouse in West River, Maryland, 30 miles east of Washington. “I love the colors of the moody blue skies this time of year, the way the plants look after the first frost, the golds of the cornfields after harvest and the purplish shadows at twilight,” Oliver says. This year, as Thanksgiving approaches, Oliver’s front porch, wide entry hall and dining room are filled with pumpkins of all sizes painted in dusty shades of pale blue, mustard, gray and biscuit. Roses, hellebores and thistle are massed on her dining table and sideboard in delicate purple, navy and cream. And her blue and white china collection inspired her handdrawn, transferware-style pumpkins and a wreath made of plates. Last year Oliver, her husband, Robb Stout, and their 3-year-old daughter moved from their Washington bungalow to a white clapboard house that was once a

She looked online for PVC copies of period medallions and found a 16-inch-diameter medallion on Amazon. She painted it with three of her Benjamin Moore colors, then sprayed several dozen dried natural wheat stalks with gold paint. She traced the medallion on a piece of cardboard, cut it out and then hot-glued the wheat all around it. The cardboard was glued to the back of the medallion. In the center, she placed a 6-inch Oasis wreath ring with viburnum berries, carnations, ilse roses, seckel pears and greenery.

Composting doesn’t have to be complicated

P

ITY THE BEGINNING gardener who dares to read about composting. (Please dare to read on, in this case, even if you are a beginner.) What novice could not be intimidated by the complicated instructions often given, as well as alleged needs for exotic or hard-to-find ingredients. When I was a novice, I read too many British gardening books and almost tossed in my pitchfork and gloves in despair trying to find soil for my compost pile. Yes, soil! Many of those British “authorities recommended laying down a 1- to 2-inch blanket after every foot or so of other ingredients. I have since learned that soil is a nice, but not necessary, addition to a compost pile. My compost piles still get soil, but only sprinklings. The directives most likely to convince anyone to go back to using plastic trash bags and the kitchen sink’s disposal unit are those telling us not to compost diseased plants or plant parts. And the same could be said for warnings against composting plants or plant parts harboring insect pests.

You might similarly be instructed to keep weeds out of your compost piles. Is any of this possible or desirable? Unless you regularly douse your property with a slew of insecticides and fungicides, you are unlikely to find much plant material that does not host some insect or disease pest. You might find a clean leaf here and there, but nothing in quantity, and surely nothing worth picking through. And if you follow warnings against using weeds, you miss out on the sweet revenge of reincarnating them from agents that rob plants of nutrients and water into compost, which has the opposite effect. So I say balderdash to all this talk about keeping pest-ridden plants and weeds out of compost piles. Not because I don’t care about these problems, but because throwing any and all plants into my compost should not —and has not — caused problems. What spells death to insect, disease, and weed pests in a compost pile is a combination of heat and time. Pile up compostable materials in a big

Composting need not be complicated; any pile of organic materials eventually becomes compost.

batch, with attention to the mix of ingredients, air, and moisture, and intense heat soon follows. The dial on my longprobed compost thermometer has spun as high as 160 degrees, which is hot enough to

do in virtually all pests in short order. A casually made pile, built gradually over a few weeks, especially this time of year with weather turning cold, will generate little heat. But let

any pile of living or once living material sit long enough and it will eventually turn dark brown and crumbly. Along the way, pests will have expired or have been gobbled up by other microorganisms. A week at 100 degrees could have the same killing effect on some pest as an hour at 140 degrees. You cannot do much better for your garden than to lavish it with compost. And you need plenty of raw materials to make plenty of compost. Don’t waste any compostable materials — including weeds and pest ridden plants — by carting them away to the landfill or burning them. (My book “Weedless Gardening has a whole section in the ins and outs of making compost.) Come visit Lee Reich’s garden at leereich.com.

Victorian furniture: out of style, hard to sell

T

HE FURNITURE you select for your first house is usually furniture that is as old as the house. A new modern house probably has lots of windows, high ceilings, kitchens and bathrooms made with marble. Most rooms are painted with either a mixture of bright colors or a monotone shade of white or beige. Furniture looks like the first modern designs — simple shapes, little carving or decoration, chairs made of bent wood and metal rods, and plain rectangular storage pieces and tables. Victorian furniture with dark wood, carved and gilt trims, and metal plaques just doesn’t fit in. When this 1870 American Renaissance-era cabinet was offered at auction (est. $8,000 to $12,000), there were few bidders. Moore, York, & Howell of Philadelphia, who exhibited at the 1876 Centennial Exposition, made it. A great example of American Renaissance furniture, over 5 feet high and just short of 5 feet wide, it is a good size for a Victorian room with an

vase and I would love some more information about it. It’s marked with the reverse letter “R” back to back with the letter “P” with 14 flames around it. I’ve found that most Rookwood pieces have a Roman numeral date below the mark, but this one does not. It also has the impressed number 605.

A.

Rookwood pottery was made in Cincinnati, Ohio, beginning in 1880. The “RP” mark was first used in 1886. One flame was added each year after that through 1900, making 14 flames.

Roman numerals were added under the flame mark beginning in 1901. If there’s no Roman numeral under the mark on your vase, it was made in 1900. The number 605 is the shape number. Each shape was made in several sizes and decorated by different artists. A letter after the shape number indicates the size, with “A” being the largest and “F” the smallest. You may also find the artist’s initials or marks that indicate the glaze on the bottom of your vase. Rookwood was bought and sold several times. It was out of business for a while but now makes architectural tile, art pottery and special commisSEE KOVEL, PAGE F6

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has associated formaldehyde with sore throats, coughs, scratchy eyes, nosebleeds and breathing difficulty or asthma in those who are susceptible. The Environmental Protection Agency considers it is “probably (a) human carcinogen.” And if you bring drycleaned clothing, adhesives, inks, dyes, lacquers, paints, varnishes and paper products into your home, chances are that trichloroethylene is hitching a ride in with them. The CDC has twice proposed bans on the chemical, which it has linked to cancer, skin, respiratory and central nervous system effects, and risks to a developing fetus after just a single exposure. Yet, trichloroethylene is still present in many of these products.
