At one time, baby boomers may have loved hauling out their French rimmed soup plates and polishing their sterling salt-and-pepper shakers, but many of these accessories have moved into the aftermarket. You’ll find tons of entertaining stuff on Etsy and eBay and at estate sales and thrift shops. But some old-school basics are being brought back, even reinvented, to grab the attention of a younger, hipper crowd looking for fun – not fussy – accessories. Here are some fresh ideas to toast the holidays using entertaining throwbacks.

settings at a table. Sandy Chilewich, creative director of the company that bears her name, has offered an easy-care option for 19 years, with her wipe-clean woven vinyl place mats. Her new line of mats pairs the modern textile with designer John Derian’s evocative vintage botanical and historical motifs including cabbage roses, hummingbirds and ferns. “John Derian’s imagery is so romantic,” Chilewich says. “Putting it with our textiles is a juxtaposition of old and new.”

Place cards Although cards engraved with guests’ names are associated with formal gatherings such as weddings or diplomatic dinners, they don’t have to be fussy. Karen Suen-Cooper and Martin Cooper love using place cards when setting the table for a dinner with friends. “They always spark a smile,” Suen-Cooper says. “It’s not something everyone uses in the age of paper Place mats plates.” They realized, Embroidered linen and however, that the plain cotton place mats are not white cards they were using seen on the tables of most “seemed so blank and borAmericans these days. crystal bowls were regulars at wedding showers or Easter open houses, filled with sugary concoctions chilled by ice rings. Vintage punch bowls are not often seen partying these days. Instead, they’re languishing in basements or thrift shops. But in researching her new book “Entertaining at Home: Inspiration from Celebrated Hosts,” author Ronda Carman writes about Christy Ford, whose family in Charlottesville has given punch a new spin. At an annual mother-daughter holiday tea, a mixture of orange juice, cranberry juice and champagne is ladled from a tall punch bowl into elegant champagne flutes rather than the usual small cups. It makes for a more festive, fizzier experience. “The appeal of a punch bowl is that it’s a way to make a beverage ahead of time,” Carman says. “Then people can help themselves and you don’t have to be fussing around making drinks for people.” There are plenty of modern options for punch bowls. Carman likes the Oregon punch bowl ($99.95 at Crate & Barrel for a 10-piece set), the Schott Zwiesel Tritan Pure Punch Bowl ($129.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond) and the Octopus Bowl ($169.95 at Z Gallerie).

Scotch was kept in a heavy cut crystal decanter with a stopper on top, a la “Mad Men.” As more relaxed lifestyles came into vogue (and day drinking diminished), many decanters were shoved into the back of cabinets or donated to thrift shops. But the truth is that many of them are really good-looking and are fun to pull out for a special occasion, if not more often. For Marian McEvoy, former editor of Elle Decor and House Beautiful and now a Hudson Valley artisan, dinners are a bottle-free zone. She says decanters unify things.

The garden is full of stuff for stuffing

T

HANKSGIVING IS A time when one’s thoughts naturally turn to ... stuffing. No, not stuffing yourself, but stuffing a turkey. Even many people who choose not to eat turkey on Thanksgiving nonetheless do enjoy stuffing themselves with stuffing. So why not think about what ingredients for stuffing can be reaped from the garden? Even better, how about setting aside a little portion of the garden next year as a stuffing garden? The bread and butter of any stuffing is some starchy food — often bread and butter itself, the bread usually as crumbs. But there’s no breadcrumb plant, so forget about growing breadcrumbs. Not that you couldn’t buy some wheat “berries at a health food store, plant them next spring, harvest the grain when the plants dry down, thresh and winnow out the berries, grind them into flour, make the flour into bread, then let the bread go stale and pound it into bread crumbs. Whew! Most of us are not going to do this.

One of the original Thanksgiving dinner foods was a tuber called groundnut, which you can grow today.

Then again, if some grain was going to be the starchy base of your stuffing, you could get ritzy and use wild rice, which costs more than bread crumbs but may be easier to get home grown into stuffing. You’ll need a permanently wet spot — 6 inches of slowly running water is ideal — in which to grow this grain, and plant the seed some time between now and early spring. Five years will have to elapse before stuffing can be

made if its going to be from your home-grown chestnuts. Then again, chestnut stuffing can be delicious, and does seem most authentic because wild turkeys anyway once stuffed themselves with

once-abundant wild chestnuts. So why not plant a chestnut tree and patiently wait? As they say in China, “The longest journey begins with the first step. And speaking of China, Chinese chestnuts are resistant to the blight that decimated our native American chestnuts, as are some hybrid chestnuts such as Layeroka and Colossal. You’ll need two different varieties for cross-pollination. While you are waiting to harvest chestnuts, make stuffing based on one of the more quickly grown starchy vegetables. Potatoes, for instance. The best potatoes for making stuffing will be those that are dry and mealy, varieties such as Nooksack and Butte. “Dry and mealy is also the mantra to use when choosing a winter squash

A most authentic stuffing should be based on nu nu, a golfball-sized, starchy tuber also called makoosit or groundnut. variety to grow as a base for stuffing. “Squash stuffing has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? As does “stuffing squash, which is how you’re going to prepare your stuffing. My recommendation for a dry, mealy squash is a buttercup type called Chestnut or Sweet Mama. A most authentic stuffing should be based on nu nu, a golfball-sized, starchy tuber also called makoosit or groundnut. Native Americans harvested and ate nu nu, and

Bidders make big play on tin toy

Current prices are recorded from antiques shows, flea markets, sales and auctions throughout the United States. Prices vary in different locations because of local economic conditions.

TIN TOY AND ITS original illustrated box made in 1911 sold recently at a Bertoia toy auction in New Jersey for $12,000. The price was more than twice the low estimate. The clockwork toy is a boy riding a horse while carrying a copy of the now-famous painting of Mona Lisa. Why was the 1507 painting by Leonardo da Vinci shown in a 20th-century toy? The Mona Lisa painting was stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris in August 1911. Three men cut the painting out of its frame and case, hid it in a blanket and left the city on a train. No one noticed for 28 hours. The newspaper publicity about the theft made the painting famous, and the empty space in the museum became a popular spot to visit. The painting was hidden for over two years, then the thieves tried to sell it to an art dealer who reported it to the police. The thieves were caught and eventually sent to prison. The painting is now in its own viewing area at the Louvre and is its most popular work of art. The auction mentioned the interesting history of the toy because the box said it was the “L’Intrepide Jockey” (Brave Jockey).

and sold glass novelties. The words on the plate are from the eulogy written by Henry Lee after Washington died in 1799. Congress commissioned Lee, a major general in the Continental Army and governor of Virginia, to write the eulogy, which was read in Congress. Lee was a friend of Washington’s and the father of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Gillinder started making molded and cut flint glass in 1861. Pressed glass was made beginning in 1863. The

company moved to Port Jervis, New York, in 1912. The business continued under various names and owners, and it is now called Gillinder Glass. The company has made new pieces from old molds. Other companies have also made reproductions of pressed glass patterns. Plates like this sell for $20$25.

this was one of the foods crucial in helping the Pilgrims survive their first winters in Massachusetts. Be careful planting nu nu because it can spread like a weed to give you more stuff for stuffing than you would ever need. That said, the plants do sport decorative and sweetly fragrant, lilac colored flowers. Let’s move on to some seasonings for your stuffing. Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme come to mind, as do summer savory and sweet marjoram. Sage and thyme are perennials, each also available in designer flavors: pineapple sage and caraway thyme, for example. Rosemary is a perennial, too, but only where it survives winters outdoors, which it won’t do here. Rosemary is happy enough to spend its life in a pot, so it can be kept indoors in winter to provide pretty greenery, piney fragrance, and savory snippings for the kitchen. Finally, round out the flavors and bulk with some pickings from the vegetable garden. Onion, garlic, celery, and carrots will be mainstays, but vegetables such as parsnips and garlic can make special — and powerful — flavor contributions.

Now we need a design for this dedicated stuffing garden. The chestnut tree casts shade, so it will have to be off by itself. Enclosure might be provided by mounds of hilled potatoes or squash vines trained along a low, rustic fence. Within, why not a knot garden? A knot garden is a tapestry of colors and textures defined by various plants. The makings of stuffing provide a more than adequate palette, from the spiky leaves of onions to the gray green leaves of sage to the dainty, dark green leaves of thyme. For a centerpiece, make a rustic arbor up which can twine nu nu stems. Come visit Lee Reich’s garden at leereich.com.

Bench is heart of the shop

M

UCH MORE than a simple work surface, a fine woodworking bench is the heart of any wellequipped shop. A well-made bench incorporates precise angles and a level top that serve as gauges for other projects. In fact, the accuracy of the workbench can be a factor in determining the success of any given project. Hydrangea varieties add long-lasting color to garden By Norman Winter

Tribune News Service

Electric blue and neon purple in “The Garden Guy’s” hydrangeas made 2019 an unforgettable year in the garden. These colors came courtesy of Let’s Dance Rave hydrangeas from Proven Winners. We’ve all seen those photos in catalogs and brochures making us wonder if those flowers really will look like that for me, and I can say, yes, they did! This was the Year of the Hydrangea at The Garden Guy’s house. I planted 25 of them, best I can count, representing three species and seven varieties. They all performed very well, but I want to tout three in particular. Let’s Dance Rave literally stole the show in the garden, which is hard to do when companion plants were Compact Electric Orange SunPatiens. You can immediately gather that this garden was a little on the gaudy side and perhaps perfect for garden party dance. Let’s Dance Rave will get 36 inches tall and as wide, and

it is a rebloomer. I suspect it may get a little taller in the deep South. It is recommended for zones 5-9, and as with other Hydrangea macrophylla varieties the color is really dependent on soil pH. Acidic soil gives intense blues and purple, while alkaline-rich soil will yield vibrant pink shades. At the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, I had fallen for the Big Daddy hydrangea that is part of the Southern Living Plant Collection. The obvious question is would it perform similarly at my home in West Georgia? I can ecstatically now shout, “Who’s your daddy?” Yes, Big Daddy looks happy at The Garden Guy’s house, but the shocker to me was how much reblooming I got. Now, in early November, my blooms are aging into a beautiful kaleidoscope of purples. Big Daddy is just that: big flowers 10 to 14 inches wide, big plant 5 to 6 feet tall and wide. Like Let’s Dance Rave, color is dependent on soil pH. At my house the new blooms

are lighter blue, and this shift in color I suspect is coming with age and the cooler 45-degree nights we’ve been experiencing. hairstreaks and bees. If you want glorious white hydrangea blooms in mid-to late-summer with the accompaniment of pollinators, then this is the one for you. It is recommended for zones 3-8, and based on our plants in Savannah zone 9 should work too. It is large, reaching 5 feet tall and wide. It blooms on current seasons growth, so cutting back will be part of your regimen. This hydrangea can go in full sun to part shade. The Garden Guy hopes you’ll take advantage of this time of the year to stroll the landscape and see where the addition of a few hydrangeas might dazzle with color and butterflies. You may very well find yourself shouting “Let’s dance!” and “Who’s your daddy?” Norman Winter is a horticulturist, garden speaker and author of “Tough-as-Nails Flowers for the South” and “Captivating Combinations: Color and Style in the Garden.”
