AIT! BEFORE you put those tulip, daffodil, crocus, and hyacinth bulbs in the ground: Do you want to multiply them? Sure, they’ll multiply by themselves, but you could speed up the process. Before you can multiply a bulb, you have to know if it really is a bulb. Some so-called bulbs, such as crocus and gladiolus, are in fact corms, which are just thickened hunks of stem. If you want crocuses to multiply prolifically, make cuttings, just as you would with any stem. Each cutting needs at least one bud, or eye, best seen on a corm by removing the papery covering. Because of all this wounding and the difficulty of seeing the eyes this time of year, perhaps you should wait until early spring to cut up crocus corms. Then, wounds heal most quickly and eyes are plumping up. Corms can also be propagated another way, with cormels. As the name suggests, these are baby corms, and they’re produced around the base of a corm. Plant your crocus shallower than recommended and you’ll get more cormels. Most other common spring bulbs are true bulbs, consisting of a flattened piece of stem with the bulk of the bulb made up of leaves, scales, or both. Just as with your forsythia or rose bush, buds grow wherever leaves meet a stem. In bulbs, these buds become bulblets, which grow up to become first offsets and then bona fide bulbs themselves. One way to multiply bulbs is to just dig them up sometime between early summer and now, then snap off and plant out the offsets. Not having to elbow around in the dirt with their mother bulb, bulblets, or other offsets lets these separated offsets grow quickly to flowering size — and make more of their own bulblets and offsets. For greater increase, make bulb cuttings of such beauties

Here’s a treat for Halloween collectors

H

ALLOWEEN IS becoming one of the most popular holidays for collectors. Of course, children still dress in costumes and go door to door for treats, but the holiday’s collectors are more interested in the “trick or treat” bags or decorations that are created each year. Carved pumpkin jack-o’lanterns are being replaced by plastic, foam or cardboard. They can be saved and used for many years. Hundreds of witches, ghosts, black cats and skeletons are manufactured and sold to decorate a house inside and out, but it is the vintage toys, candy containers, postcards, costumes, noise makers and sparklers made since the early 1900s that attracted the collectors in the late 1970s. Today there are important auctions featuring Halloween, including modern dolls and figures, full-size ghosts that guard the front door and even a pair of legs in striped stockings and pointy shoes that is all that is left of the witch who landed in the planter headfirst. Display the collection in a cool room without bright lights or sunlight and handle with care the papier-mache candy containers made in Germany in the 1930s. They are expensive today, $50 to $150, and an adult-size skeleton costume in good shape with a papier-mache skull mask sells for hundreds of dollars. This toy, a dancing couple with pumpkin heads, is on a wheeled platform, and they dance in circles when wound up. It was probably made in the early 1900s. Bertoia Auctions sold the toy for $1,920.

CURRENT PRICES Current prices are recorded from antiques shows, flea markets, sales and auctions throughout the United States. Prices vary in different locations because of local economic conditions. A.

Michael Thonet (17961871) was a German-Austrian cabinetmaker. In the 1830s in Germany, Thonet experimented with wood bending using strips of veneer and glue. He opened his own shop with his four sons in the 1840s in Vienna and developed a technique for bending rods of solid beechwood into sleek curves using hot steam. tions across Europe and in the U.S. During the late 1800s, many bentwood furniture designs were created. In 1976, the Thonet company was divided into separate and independent German and Austrian companies. We have seen Thonet highchairs listed for sale for about $600 to $1,000 retail, but at auction they have been sold for $100 to $300.

Folk-art classic stores the humble pie

A

FREE-STANDING cabinet designed to store baked goods, a pie safe was a standard fixture in most kitchens back when great-grandma was a girl. The simple and effective design featured punched-tin panels that allowed air to circulate while keeping pests out. Today, along with everything else in great-grandma’s kitchen, pie safes have become desirable (and valuable) antiques. More so, in fact, be-

cause the elaborate, whimsical designs often punched in the tin panels of their doors have elevated the humble pie safe to a folk-art object. You don’t have to be an art or antiques collector (or even a baker) to enjoy this venerable kitchen classic. This do-it-yourself version features three shelves behind a single door, and its convenient size and simple style make it a good fit for almost any room. Easy enough for any wood-

Bulb-planting in the fall is always an act of hope. This year, it becomes a form of therapy. When the crocuses, daffodils and tulips next flower, we will be assured of at least one thing: It won’t be 2020. Not much is instant in the garden, but spring bulbs

planted in autumn come pretty close. I can’t think of anything more forward-looking or reassuring at the moment than planting tulip bulbs. From a practical standpoint, it’s difficult to mess up with bulbs; they are little packages programmed to grow and bloom. All they need is some moisture and the enduring

Bulbs CONTINUED FROM PAGE F6

For mass plantings of eye-catching tulips, left, the anticipation of their appearance is almost as much pleasure as the spring show. The easiest way to plant a block in a vacant bed is to dig a trench at least 7 inches deep with a shovel. Add to the layering effect, shown above, by planting two lily-flowered tulip varieties of the same rose hue but of different heights. (COLORBLENDS.COM)

make it into the ground, because, well, bulbs don’t plant themselves. “It’s hard work,” he said. “Take a smaller bite, see how it goes, don’t try to get it all

done in one year.” Bulbs are available from independent garden centers, mail-order bulb companies and other online retailers. Mass merchandisers are

another source, but selection tends to be limited and the availability period short. There are two basic ways to employ bulbs. The first is to plant in large blocks, the second to intersperse them among existing perennials. The latter course is especially effective in spring-themed beds, where bulbs pop up between such things as helle-

cold soil of winter to shoot up and flower early next year. Even if you ignore the earliest bloomers – the snowdrops and aconites – carefully selected bulbs can give you a show that in the Mid-Atlantic begins in late February and endures until at least late May, offering three months of icing on the vernal cake. The next month is prime bulb-planting season, but these wee packets of spring can go in anytime before the ground freezes. I’d get to this sooner rather than later, though. In the hyper-domestic pandemic paradigm, many people are jumping on bulb-planting as a way of doing something for and around their homes, and varieties are selling out. Crocuses launch a continuous and overlapping display, followed by daffodils and tulips and alliums, or ornamental onions. This weekslong parade is enlivened by specialty bulbs, which bloom in the following order, loosely: giant snowdrop, bulbous iris, common snowdrop, crocus, scilla, chionodoxa (glory-ofthe-snow), windflower and muscari (grape hyacinth). By variety, daffodils generally bloom from late February to late April, tulips from late March to early May, and most alliums in May to early June. Hyacinths bloom in early spring; I find them awkward in the garden but cheerful as indoor potted plants. I’ve given up on fritillaries, which are, in my experience, oneshot wonders in hot, humid regions. My long-standing advice has been to plant far more bulbs than you think is enough, so you can create drama in the garden. (The smaller the bulb, the more you should plant.) I was thinking that Tim Schipper, owner of bulb retailer Colorblends, would agree with me; his business model relies on bigger orders, both for landscapers and consumers. But he says that a common mistake of new gardeners is to buy too many bulbs that never

The average rate on the 30-year mortgage rate fell to another record low last week amid the release of new housing data reinforcing how the Federal Reserve’s move to make home loans more affordable is spurring growth in sales, prices and construction nationwide. The average for a 30year fixed-rate mortgage dropped to 2.80% from 2.81% with an average 0.6 point, according to a Freddie Mac survey released Thursday. (A point is a fee buyers pay, typically amounting to 1 percent of the loan, to get a better rate.) The average rate, the lowest since Freddie Mac began conducting the survey 49 years ago, is well below the 3.75% level a year ago. The 15-year fixed-rate average decreased to 2.33% from 2.35%, with an average 0.6 point. The five-year adjustable-rate average of 2.87%, with an average 0.3 point, was down from the 2.90% of the previous week. The 15-year rate was 3.18% and the five-year was 3.40% a year ago. Existing-home sales rose to an annual rate of 6.54 million in September, up nearly 21% compared with September 2019 and up 9.4% compared to August 2020, according to the National Association of Realtors. The median existing-home sales price rose to $311,800 in September, nearly 15 % higher than September 2019, according to the NAR. Houses are selling fast, too, with 71% selling in less than one month in September. Because homes are being snapped up so quickly, there’s a record low number of homes for sale.
