When Kusama was young, she began having vivid hallucinations, some of which involved polka dots or flowers spreading around her. “Some people get stuck on the polka dots. Her work has a sort of internal sadness combined with an external joy, which really speaks to the current moment,” says Karen Daubmann, vice president

Three galleries in the Conservatory feature horticultural celebrations of Kusama. Towering polka-dotted flowers in “My Soul Blooms Forever” (2019) greet visitors in the palm gallery. Nearby, the pink and gold mosaic “Starry Pumpkin” (2015) is surrounded by woodland flowers and foliage in complementary pastels. And to complement the bold colors of Kusama’s painting “Alone, Buried in a Flower Garden” (2014) is a display of seasonal flowers and foliage designed to be equally strong in shape and color. Highlights elsewhere in the garden include “Narcissus Garden” (1966/ 2021), composed of 1,400 stainless steel spheres installed in a water feature, and “Ascension of the Polka Dots on the Trees” (2002/ 2021), which features soaring trees, their trunks wrapped in bright red fabric with white polka dots. In the garden’s library, an exhibit includes sketches, paintings, collages and sculptures by Kusama, including a 1945 sketchbook she kept, at age 16. It’s full of meticulous, realistic drawings of plants. Also on view is her “Infinity Net” painting, inspired by the Pacific Ocean as viewed from an airplane; the work was exhibited at the Whitney Museum in 1961. A small photo exhibit focuses on Kusama’s life in New York, where she lived from around 1958, doing performance art pieces among other works before returning to Japan in 1973. Kusama, 92, now divides her time between the Japanese mental hospital where she has lived voluntarily since the 1970s and her nearby studio. She has not traveled to the United States since 2012. Her installations were completed with help from a team with which she works closely; they reviewed the works’ placement with Kusama using

organic fertilizers, remember that the nutrients in most of them are initially insoluble and in forms that plants cannot use immediately. Account for the time lag between application and nutrient release by spreading organic fertilizers a few weeks before planting. Or a few months before planting! You could even have applied organic fertilizer way back in late autumn. Because soil microorganisms need time, warmth, and moisture to release nutrients from organic fertilizers, plants may have to wait to eat in dry soil. In this case, watering not only quenches a plant’s thirst, but also makes food available. Occasionally, you may have to tailor your fertilizer to special conditions. For instance, a spell of unseasonably cool weather in spring slows microbial activity. If you must spur plant growth then, apply a light application of some soluble organic fertilizer whose nutrients are quickly available — blood

O GET THE MOST out of any organic fertilizer, keep in mind how plants feed and how these fertilizers act in the soil. The bulk of plants’ feeder roots — from midget marigolds to mighty oaks —lie just beneath the surface, so generally there is no need to dig fertilizer deep into the soil. And anyway, low oxygen levels there would retard microbial growth, which is necessary to unlock nutrients from most organic fertilizers. Make exception to that “no dig” rule if phosphorus levels are low, as indicated by a soil test or stunted plants that are purplish when young or late to ripen. Phosphorus moves slowly in the soil, so the only way to get it quickly into the root zone is to mix it into the top 6 to 12 inches of soil. Once a soil is up to snuff with phosphorus, periodic surface applications can trickle down through the soil profile fast enough to maintain adequate levels throughout the root zone. As far as when to apply

Terry and Kim Kovel | Antiques and Collecting

Reproduced antiques worth a second look

S

OMETIMES A REPROduction of an antique is worth almost as much as the original antique. Wallace Nutting (1861-1941) was a collector, expert, photographer, furniture maker, author and an important part of the Colonial Revival in the U.S. He went to Harvard, married and started taking photographs of the New England scenery. Soon he furnished his home with authentic antique American furniture, using the furnishings as props in pictures he staged with men and women dressed in Colonial clothes. The pictures were black and white, but he hired colorists to turn the pictures into color photos. He sold millions of copies that soon hung in the average home. The furniture was admired, and he soon made accurate copies to sell to the public. This, too, was a success. He also wrote books about New England, furniture and history. A 20th-century reproduction Nutting tavern table was sold by Garths Auctioneers and Appraisers a few years ago for $469. It is short, has an apron, turned legs and a box stretcher. This type of table was used as a serving table in the tap room of Colonial taverns.

Q. Are old milk bottles

CURRENT PRICES Current prices are recorded from antiques shows, flea markets, sales and auctions throughout the United States. Prices vary in different locations because of local economic conditions.

Reproduction furniture sells for low prices when compared to antiques, but there are still companies making useful, accurate copies of 18th-century pieces. This tavern table cost only $469. (COWLES SYNDICATE INC.)

states used the same numbers. Thatcher Glass Manufacturing Co. was given the number “1” in Wisconsin, “11” in Maine, and “14” in Michigan. The company used “1-11-14” on its milk bottles so it would meet the requirements of all three states. The word “sealed” guarantees the bottle holds the volume of liquid listed on it. Most embossed bottles were made before the 1930s, when pyro glazed (applied color) labels became common. Kinnett’s was sold to Parmalat in 1998. Embossed half-pint milk bottles sell for $10 to $15. Some pyro glazed bottles sell for higher prices. Clever logos or sayings add value.

popular characters and Holly Hobbie tea sets, dishes, dolls and many other items were made by the 1970s. The original character was a little girl wearing a big blue bonnet that hid her face, but soon she was pictured so her face showed. Many Holly Hobbie tea sets have been made by different makers with different images and different shaped teapots. Your limited set sells for about $25. We don’t know anything about a set made for salesmen. Perhaps they were given some of the first sets made.

Paper dolls set, Lilly Beers, two Victorian girl dolls in petticoats, 10 dresses, two hats, stand, McLoughlin Series, 1859, dolls 4-inches, $360. Liverpool pottery pitcher, creamware, transfer portraits of George Washington and General Lafayette in leafy cartouches, eagle & stars, in commemoration of Lafayette’s visit to U.S., 1824, 6 x 7 inches, $450. meal or fish emulsion, for example. A quick-acting fertilizer might also be needed when a plant is so hungry that it actually shows symptoms of starvation, such as yellowing, older leaves, and needs some fast food. Leaves can absorb nutrients directly, and for a really quick effect, you could spray seaweed extract or fish emulsion right on leaves. Avoid plant injury by reading label directions and following specified rates carefully. Consider use of quick-acting fertilizers as quick-fixes only. Build up good reserves of nutrients in your soil and such applications will be unnecessary. In fact, spreading an inch of compost, or a few inches of leaves, wood chips, or some other organic mulch over the ground each year might provide all the nourishment your plants need, depending what you grow. The hungriest parts of the garden are vegetable and formal flower beds; give them compost. Less needy are woody plants, mixed flower borders, and wildflowers; give them any organic mulch. Over the years, the compost or other organic mulches will enrich the soil to offer a spectrum of nutrients available to plants. In naturally poor soils, some additional, more concentrated, nitrogen fertilizer might — just might — also be needed. Soybean meal, sprinkled over the ground once a year just before mulching, is convenient, nourishing, and organic. Apply a couple of pounds per hundred square feet. Any gardening questions? Email them to me at garden@leereich.com and I’ll try answering them directly or in this column. For online and live workshops, see leereich.com/workshops.
