That’s designer Brigette Romanek’s sweet spot. “It’s this idea that I have all of these ingredients and put them in a pot and hopefully come out with a good meal,” says Romanek, the owner and principal designer at Romanek Design Studio in Los Angeles. “Clients tell me
what they need, and it’s my job to enhance that vision, to make it beautiful but also make it functional.” In the laundry room, that means thinking carefully about how you’ll use the space. Excess rain can lead to garden problems
SEASON OF RAIN IS as trying as is a season of drought. Excess rain causes gooey soil which is no fun to plant in if you are a human and no fun to grow in if you are a plant. Roots need air, and day after day of rain can fill all the soil pores with water. The result: Roots have trouble absorbing nutrients and even water. Incessant summer rains rarely present a problem in soils that are well-cared for or sandy. With good aggregation (clumping of soil particles), the result of applying heaps of organic materials to the soil and not working it or walking on it when it is wet, even a clay soil develops enough large pores to let water drain right through. If conditions are really horrendous waterwise, you could construct raised beds for vegetables and flowers, and wide mounds on which to plant trees and shrubs. If soil conditions are worse still, move your plants somewhere drier. Alas, even with perfect drainage, a wet summer can bring on problems unrelated to the soil. Plants might “lodge,” for example, the result of growth so lush that stems flop over because they can no longer support themselves. Corn plants one day standing neatly like soldiers might suddenly, even with calm air, bow low as if gale force winds were blowing. Speaking of lush growth, abundant summer rains will also have weeds thriving. Sunshowers are not that frequent, so plants also experience less sunlight during a wet summer. Less sun means less fuel to make delicious tomatoes, peppers, apples, and other fruits. You could also blame rainy weather for poor fruiting of peppers and delayed fruiting of tomatoes, although the effect of rain could be indirect, the result of poor pollination. Excessive rains also can bring on pests. Most fungi thrive in moisture. A most

dramatic demonstration of this would be some near-leafless crabapple trees. Moisture-loving scab and rust fungi are mostly responsible for these trees’ fall from their glory of spring. As always, good spacing, pruning, and good soil lessen disease problems; still, the threat is increased during a rainy year. Crawling pests may or may not enjoy abundant moisture. Needless to say, it is heaven for slugs and mosquitoes. I prefer a dry summer to a wet one. You can mitigate the effects of drought by avoiding tillage and by mulching and irrigating, but there’s little you
can do when day after day of rain causes poor fruiting and an increase in diseases, slugs, and mosquitoes. How does tillage figure into conserving soil moisture? Not tilling the soil allows it, over time, to build up good structure, that is, soil aggregates within which small pores can draw in and cling to water by capillary action. A water-efficient way to irrigate any part of the garden that benefits most from regular irrigation is with drip irrigation. Frequently dripping water into the ground replenishes soil moisture closer to the rate at
which plants drink it up than is possible with watering with a sprinkler. Drip irrigation typically saves 60% water as compared with sprinkling — and it is easily automated. Summer weather here can be so variable, wet one year and dry the next. Or we can even have periods of excessive wetness and periods of excessive dryness in a single season. But as described above, some of either extreme or combinations of extremes can be mitigated in some way. Any gardening questions? Email them to me at garden@ leereich.com and I’ll try answering them directly or in this column. For online and live workshops, see leereich.com/ workshops.

made of wood and comes with a removable liner. It’s available in natural, dark mahogany and white. • Use the Selena hook rack ($98, anthropologie.com) to hang mesh laundry bags, reusable grocery bags, totes and other items. The 18-inch brass rack with a bronze finish has four hooks and can hold up to 16 pounds. • Although Romanek likes to have some closed storage in a laundry room, not everyone’s space (or budget) has room for that. Marble wall-mounted shelves ($69.95-$99.95, cb2.com), made of Carrara-style gray and white marble, add storage and style. The shelves are available in two lengths, 24 and 36 inches, and are eight inches deep. They come with metal brackets in a brass finish.
The Toy Chest and Bench plan, No. 248, is $9.95 and includes full-size traceable patterns, assembly instructions, construction diagrams, a shopping list and cutting schedule and a toll-free help line for project questions. Please include $3.95 for postage and handling and allow

• Corral loose towels with interlocking towel organizers ($33 for a set of two, west elm.com). Available in black or white, they are 5.7 by 11.8 inches and can lock together to create multiple sections to hold hand or bath towels. • A drying rack is a must for clothes that need to airdry, but that flimsy foldable model you used in college has to be dragged out each time you need it. A wall-mounted drying rack by Iris Hantverk ($75, helenmilan.com) can be hung within arm’s reach of your machine, and it folds back against the wall when you’re not using it. It’s made of solid oak and has three 21.75-inch bars. • Reduce visual clutter on open shelves by decanting detergents and other laundry products into refillable dispensers, such as clear half-gallon glass jugs with labels from Church Street Designs ($35-$110, etsy.com). There are options for caps and pumps, and the bottles are sold individually or in sets of two or three. • Add texture and warmth with a hamper in a natural finish. Romanek likes the basket-weave Marjan hamper ($293, luluandgeorgia. com), made of teak. A fun and simple way to add storage space to any child’s room, it features a safe, sturdy design, a handy bench top perfect for reading or tying shoes and, of course, plenty of room for toys inside. Cut from a single sheet of plywood, the project requires just six pieces in all and includes full-size patterns for all the curves. To build, simply trace the pieces onto plywood, cut everything out, sand and assemble with glue and nails. Finish with nontoxic paint and decorate with stencils (as pictured) or decals, or personalize the project with the child’s name. ‘Goat and Bee’ fable engraved on porcelain jug
HELSEA PORCELAIN was made in Chelsea, England, about 1750. One of the famous pieces is the “Goat and Bee” milk jug that was designed by Nicholas Sprimont (1716-1771). He was born in Liege (in what is now Belgium) and started working in London about 1742. An auction of important early porcelain was held recently by Doyle in New York City and some “Goat and Bee” jugs were sold. Each was marked with the incised triangle and script mark used by the Chelsea Porcelain Factory and designed by Sprimont. Other examples of the jug can be seen in at least three museum collections. The jug has an irregular pear shape and is decorated with colorful flowers. A goat is resting on one side of the base and another goat is on the other side. A large black bee with yellow wings is resting on a flower. The jug is 4 1/4 inches tall. There are several fables and tales about two goats and a bee. They all start with the two goats trying to cross a ravine on a narrow bridge. In Aesop’s Fables, the two goats are trying to cross a ravine on a narrow log. They were on opposite sides of the ravine but did not have room to pass. They were both too stubborn to let the other go so they ran across, bumped, and both fell into the ravine. Moral of the story: Sometimes giving way is better than stubbornness. The “Goat and Bee” jug in the Doyle auction sold for $3,780.
CURRENT PRICES Current prices are recorded from antiques shows, flea markets, sales and auctions throughout the United States. Prices vary in different locations because of local economic conditions. Glass sock darner, blown, yellow amber, round top, tapered handle with sheared & ground end, American, 1840-1870, 6 inches, $60. Sterling silver cheese plane, Acanthus pattern, stainless steel slit blade, design by Johan Rohde 1915, post-1944 Georg Jensen hallmark, 8 1/2 inches, $140. Furniture, book stand, revolving, mahogany, carved, three graduated tiers with open slatted sides, turned vase-shaped support extending to splayed tripod base, American, early 20th century, 44 x 17 1/2 inches, $280. Bronze door knocker, dragonfly shape, intricate textured detail along stem & wings, stamped with unidentified maker’s mark, mid- to late-20th century, 7 x 7 1/2 inches, $370. Lamp, electric, white marble base, cylinder on block form, four-sided tapered shark skin shade, Italy, c. 1950, 20 inches, $470. still being made. The bud vase was part of the first set of pieces introduced in 1936. It was discontinued in the mid-1940s, so old Fiesta bud vases are only found in the original six colors (red, cobalt, yellow, light green, old ivory and turquoise). They are still being made today in new colors (lapis was introduced in 2013 and claret in 2016) and the original molds. The post-1986 vases look almost identical to their vintage counterparts. You didn’t get a bargain and may have overpaid by $10 or $20. But they are
pretty, so enjoy them!
Q. I still have some of my
daughter’s Polly Pockets, which were popular in the 1990s. Are they collectible?
A.
Polly Pockets were made by the British company Bluebird Toys starting in 1989. Polly Pocket toys were plastic cases that opened to form a dollhouse or other playsets for Polly Pocket dolls. The 1-inchtall dolls folded in the middle, like the case, and had circular bases which slotted into holes in the case interior. The dolls also came as pendants or large rings. In the late 1990s, Mattel bought the company and redesigned a new, larger

30-year US mortgage rate down to 2.77% By Kathy Orton
The Washington Post
The 30-year fixed mortgage rate, the most popular home loan product, has been on a six-week slide, a downturn fueled by rising apprehension about the pandemic. According to the latest data released Thursday by Freddie Mac, the 30-year fixed-rate average dropped to 2.77% with an average 0.6 point. (Points are fees paid to a lender equal to 1% of the loan amount. They are in addition to the interest rate.) It was 2.8% a week ago and 2.88% a year ago. The 30-year fixed
