I
Save seeds for next year’s garden
AM SAVING SEEDS OF some of this year’s juiciest tomatoes and most colorful flowers to plant in next year’s garden. Why? Saving my own seeds from year to year gives me a bit of independence from seed companies, which, for one reason or another, may stop offering certain varieties. It’s also a way to maintain an annual supply of seeds that seed companies never offer, so-called heirloom varieties that have been handed down for generations from parents to children and from neighbor to neighbor. This year, for instance, I grew a giant canning tomato from seeds given to me by a friend. Where did my friend get the seed? From another friend. Heirloom seeds are from plants whose flowers self-pollinate. Commercial hybrid seeds, in contrast, are produced when the pollen of one specially selected plant is made to fertilize the flowers of yet another specially selected plant. Hybrid plants often are more robust than their parents — they have so-called “hybrid vigor.” When it comes to flavor of vegetables and beauty of flowers, hybrid is not always “high-bred.” New varieties of sweetpeas have beautiful flowers, but they cannot match the intoxicating fragrance of an heirloom variety such as Painted Lady, which was introduced nearly two centuries ago. The old Golden Bantam corn may not be as sweet as newer hybrids, but has much richer, cornier flavor. Seeds won’t come true from hybrid plants. Take the seeds out of a hybrid tomato, such as Big Boy, and you will not get Big Boy fruits on those plants next year. So you must purchase seeds of hybrid varieties. That said, this year I did plant, on a lark, seeds of the delectable hybrid cherry tomato called Sungold. Surpris-
The first step in saving tomato seeds — after tasting the tomato — is to squeeze the seeds into a container, then add water. (LEE REICH PHOTO)
ingly, the fruits were almost identical to those on neighboring plants raised from hybrid seeds. And thankfully so, because Sungold seed is occasionally in short supply from seed companies; if my nonhybrid plants produce nearly the same fruits year after year, I won’t have to worry about not being able to buy the seed.
If you choose to save seeds from your own garden plants, select plants that are healthy. Let fruits or flowers mature, whether they are the dry pods of lettuce or radish plants, the juicy fruits of tomato or cucumber plants, or the dry seed heads of marigolds or zinnias. You can take a few seeds out of tomatoes as you eat them, but a mature cu-
cumber with ripe seeds is unfit to eat. Rinse well, then dry the seeds from juicy plants. No need to do anything with the dry seeds you pop out of radish pods or rub from the heads of marigolds or daisies, except to pack them away. What kinds of plants you end up growing next year will depend on whether the seeds you collect are from hybrid plants, and whether the seeds were from flowers that were self-pollinated or cross-pollinated. Cucumbers, for example, have separate male and female flowers, so readily cross-pollinate. Propagate heirloom cucumber varieties by preventing cross-pollination; either grow them in isolation from other cucumbers or
else bag and hand-pollinate a few female flowers with male flowers on the same plant. The most predictable outcomes when saving flower and vegetable seeds will be with those taken from nonhybrid plants that have not cross-pollinated or do not do so readily — like heirloom varieties of peppers and most tomatoes. (Potato-leaf varieties of tomatoes do frequently cross-pollinate.) Expect some interesting results with the others. Any gardening questions? Email them to me at garden@ leereich.com and I’ll try answering them directly or in this column. For online and live workshops, see leereich.com/ workshops.

Toleware reigned supreme in 1700s New England
OLEWARE WAS popular in New England and nearby areas in the 1700s. Collectors today identify the existing pieces by similarities in the shapes and painted decorations on newly discovered pieces. Two paint colors were used as the base coat to protect the tin from rust; black or red was used in Pennsylvania, but only black was favored in parts of New England. Pennsylvania makers usually made a straight spout and a handle with an extra piece to reinforce the curve in the handle. New England makers favored a simple curved handle. The body was a lighthouse shape, and tinsmiths made a gooseneck spout. Yellow, green, red and white flowers and leaves were stenciled on as decorations. The tinware lost favor when copper and silver plate became more available because tin often rusted. But some of the small utensils, such as cookie cutters and funnels, remained in use.

was founded in Jamestown, New York, in 1888. It started out making lounges but by 1900 was making a variety of case and upholstered furniture. The Feudal Oak line was made from 1928 until the 1940s. The machine-carved pieces were made from oak trees that grew near Jamestown. The company was sold in 1978 and closed in 1983. Dark, heavy oak furniture is not in style now, so it might be hard to sell. Some Feudal Oak pieces sell for low prices, a center table for about $150, chairs for $25 each at auction, some in shops.
Q. Can you tell me the
possible price of a silver cake or pie server from the 1939 New York World’s Fair? It has a picture of George Washington, standing, at the top of the handle and five stars below that. The wide part of the server has seven flags above “New York World’s Fair 1939.”
A.
The New York World’s Fair opened on April 30, 1939, the 150th anniversary of George Washington’s inauguration as president of the United States. The fair ran until the end of October 1939. It reopened in May 1940 and closed in October. Your souvenir cake server is silver plated and made by National Silver Company. The company started before 1904 but stopped making flatware in the late 1950s. The value of your World’s Fair souvenir cake server is $10 to $20.

Child-size classic
A
S STURDY AND well-proportioned as its full-size cousins, this child’s rocking chair project is perfect for reading, watching a movie or even the occasional “time out.” Just in time for the holidays, the project makes a wonderful gift for any child (or grandchild). The chair measures 25 inches tall at the back, and the rockers are 21 inches long. The seat is 15 inches wide and sits 11 inches off the floor. Designed with safety in mind, the project has no sharp points and all the edges are rounded and smooth. The rocking chair is built from just eight board feet of oak (other woods will work) and a few oak dowels, and all the pieces are traced from full-size patterns. The most challenging part is shaping the recessed area in the seat, but with a little patience it’s easy to get great results. To build, simply trace the parts onto wood, cut everything out and sand. Next, assemble using dowels and glue. Finally, apply your
finish of choice. The Child’s Rocking Chair plan, No. 734, is $9.95 and includes complete directions with step-by-step photos, full-size traceable patterns, a shopping list and cutting schedule and a toll-free help line for project questions. Please include $3.95 per order for postage and handling and allow about two weeks for delivery. Like most of us, mortgage rates seem to be languishing as summer winds down. According to the latest data released Thursday by Freddie Mac, the 30-year fixed-rate average edged up to 2.87% with an average 0.6 point. (Points are fees paid to a lender equal to 1% of the loan amount. They are in addition to the interest rate.) It was 2.86% the previous week and 2.91% a year ago. The 30-year fixed average has remained below 3% the past two months. Freddie Mac, the federally chartered mortgage investor, aggregates rates from around 80 lenders across the country to come up with weekly national averages. It uses rates for high-quality borrowers with strong credit scores and large down payments. Because of the criteria, these rates are not available to every borrower. The survey is based on home purchase mortgages. Rates for refinances may be different. As of Aug. 1, borrowers refinancing their mortgages will no longer have to pay the adverse market refinance fee. The fee, which was imposed on mortgages sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, added about $1,500 to a $300,000 loan. The surcharge was intended to offset covid-related losses. The 15-year fixed-rate average moved slightly higher to 2.17% with an average 0.6 point. It was 2.16% a week ago and 2.46% a year ago. The five-year adjustable rate average slipped to 2.42% with an average 0.2 point. It was 2.43% the previous week and 2.91% a year ago.
