Special to The Republican

Readers have raved again, and now our coveted awards season is here! We were “Red Hot” in 2019, and we loved Rock-N-Roll in 2020; we even

tried our hand at a little La La Land movie magic with 2021’s drive-in theme, but this year it’s Game On as we celebrate our All-Star 2022 Reader Rave winners! Now in its 12th year, Reader Raves is back after being sidelined to a virtual celebration due to the ongoing pandemic, with the Reader Raves banquet’s triumphant in-person return. While bragging rights have their merits, this year’s winning MVPs will party like All-Stars when they are honored at the annual Reader Raves Celebration, which will be held at the Log Cabin Banquet & Meeting House in Holyoke on Wednesday, October 13, 2021. While accepting their award, Reader Raves 2022 winners and their guests will enjoy a celebratory evening of food, fun, and plenty of surprises. Reader Raves winners will receive two complimentary tickets, while tickets thereafter can be purchased for $55 each by contacting Coleen Dunn at 413-788-1250 or cdunn@repub.com. Thursday, September 30th is the last day to RSVP. Amassing over 61,000 category votes,

voting for Reader Raves 2022 commenced on June 6 and concluded on August 1. Throughout that period, participants were able to vote for their favorite businesses (once per valid email address on ReaderRaves.com) falling under Recommended Services, Where to Shop, Food, Fun & Fitness, and Ask a Local. Featuring 100 categories, this year’s new Reader Raves Hall of Fame inductee categories included Best Locally Owned Coffee Shop, Best Local Record Shop, and Best Place for Live Music. Reader Raves recipients aren’t the only winners! The ball was in their court, and participants who voted in 25 or more categories, won gift certificates to a Reader Raves category winner of their choice. Congratulations go out to our grand prize winner Stephanie Johnson, who won a $500 gift certificate as well as our first runner-up, who won a $250 gift certificate. Both elected to use their gift certificate at Big Y. Reader Raves wouldn’t happen without the team of Ravin’ Republican staff and other contributors who knock

They include Dave Brinnel (Dave’s Creative), Coleen Dunn, Michelle Johnson, Gretchen Halasi-Kun, Curtis Panlilio, Jenell Smith, Maureen Sullivan (Maureen Sullivan Media), yours truly, Tiera Wright and Reader Raves emcee, Mark French. So, let’s get the ball rolling as we present and congratulate the 2022 Reader Raves winners! aystate Medical Center has for the fifth consecutive year been named Best Local Hospital in The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2022. “Our numerous recognitions over the years as Best Hospital sends a consistent message to our doctors, nurses, and the entire healthcare team that their high level of skilled and compassionate care is making a difference in the health and well-being of the many communities we serve,” said Frank J. Cracolici, MHA, RN, interim president, Baystate Medical Center. “This year’s Reader Raves award, which comes at an unprecedented time as the coronavirus continues to rage across the country, further acknowledges the

selfless and heroic work of our healthcare team on the front lines of saving lives during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he added. The roots of Baystate Medical Center hark back to the formative years of the modern American hospital, when under the name of Springfield City Hospital in 1873 it was one of only 178 acute care hospitals in the country. In was renamed Springfield Hospital in 1883 and later moved to its current location on Chestnut Street in 1889. Baystate Medical Center was established in 1976 with the merger of the Medical Center of Western Massachusetts and Wesson Memorial Hospital. Today Baystate Medical Center is nationally-recognized for quality and safety. An independent academic

medical center, it is home to the University of Massachusetts Medical School – Baystate. The medical center has one of New England’s busiest emergency rooms and is the region’s only Level 1 trauma center. Baystate has long provided the region with the highest level of care for conditions such as cancer, acute and chronic cardiovascular illness, and a wide range of other major diseases. BEST PET SUPPLY STORE A.W. Brown’s

BY KEITH O’CONNOR

Special to The Republican

When it comes to their pets, owners only want the very best. They have voted A.W. Brown’s as the Best Pet

Supply Store in The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2022. “We are incredibly grateful to the community who voted for us and who have supported us throughout the

year and during 18 months of tough times to be out in the world during this terrible pandemic,” said Annie Wheeler, general manager of the family run business. “Knowing people have so

many choices in the local area, as well as online, the fact that voters choose us again and again speaks volumes to our staff about how much they care about what they are doing. We know the pets and faces who come in by name,” she said. Wheeler noted they are “problem solvers.” “Many people come in who are getting a puppy or cat in a couple of weeks and have questions, including about getting them the best food when faced with so many options,” Wheeler said. For new pet owners, A.W. Brown’s offers checklists on their website which provide information on “the essentials” and “how to keep your pet healthy.” Not only does A.W. Brown’s carry all the supplies

necessary to take care of your pet - food, bedding, litter, hay, toys, treats, salt licks, water dishes, dispenser and more - they sell live critters including hamsters, mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs and gerbils, as well as fish, birds, hermit crabs, and reptiles such as snakes and geckos. BEST LOCALLY OWNED COFFEE SHOP Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters BY CORI URBAN

Special to The Republican

The Republican/Masslive Reader Raves Award for Best Locally Owned Coffee Shop is causing quite a stir among customers at Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters. “They were very excited!” said Annabelle L. Lytle-Rich, Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters general manager/owner. Coffee lovers Kathy Lytle and Curtis Rich began Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters more than 20 years ago to bring the joy of artisan coffee to others, first selling it at fairs and festivals. A year later, they opened their first café in Shelburne Falls. From there the business grew; it now also has two

shops in Northampton plus one in Easthampton, Greenfield, Hadley and East Longmeadow. What has made it possible to expand is “the incredible support of our customers and staff,” Lytle-Rich said. Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters also offers fresh pastries and continually adds new goodies to the menu. Signature blender drinks feature fresh squeezed fruit juices. The menu also includes savory breakfast and lunch sandwiches. For more information, go to shelburnefallscoffee. com.

Glenmeadow offers a full range of services in addition to assisted living from at home care to independent living. Residents in assisted living apartments at Glenmeadow benefit from escorts to meals and activities, assistance with dressing, and monitoring medications. They have access to Glenmeadow’s full-time social service team, as well as their licensed nursing staff on site 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Glenmeadow also offers a variety of opportunities to nurture the mind, body and spirit from fitness classes, water exercise, music and art programs to discussion groups, nutrition workshops and more. There are also day trips and travel

excursions and much more. When considering the assisted living community that is right for you, Thomas recommends visiting the community and interacting with those who live and work there. Are the residents happy and engaged in different activities? Do you hear laughter? How long have staff worked there? Also, ask to talk with family members of some of the residents. “We have built a tremendous reputation over time since being founded as a nonprofit providing care since 1884. We are known for our service and are routinely referred by senior professionals and family members,” Thomas said. Glenmeadow is located at 24 Tabor Crossing in Longmeadow. BLUE Hair & Beauty Studio BY KEITH O’CONNOR

Special to The Republican

BLUE Hair & Beauty Studio wasn’t even open a full year when they received last year’s Best Beauty Salon in The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2021. Once again, voters have rated them #1 in The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2022. “It’s overwhelming to be honored twice in a row, especially during the pandemic. It tells us we are doing something good and right for our customers and the community,” said owner Nildalys Santos. BLUE Hair & Beauty Studio with its three stylists caters to all textures

of hair, specializing in color, cuts, blowouts, extensions, facial waxing, eyelashes, and derma cleaning. Owner Santos specializes in ethnic hair. “We worked together at another salon where the owners decided to liquidate. We are still a “baby” business, but each of us has over 15 years of experience,” Santos said. So, where does the name BLUE Hair & Beauty Studio come from? “I was looking for something easy and unisex. One day when driving home I remembered all of our vacations as a young adult…..how blue the water was and how blue the sky was and how very calm and tranquil it felt. I realized then that

our name had to have the word ‘blue’ in it because I wanted a comfortable, homey, calming atmosphere for people to come to where they would be respected,” Santos said. “Everyone is welcome. We have a very strong male clientele as well, and have kids as young as three getting their hair cut here,” she added. BLUE Hair & Beauty Studio is located on 401 Broadway St. in Chicopee. It is open Tuesday through Saturday with each of the three stylists working varied hours and days. For more information, call 413-592-3000 or visit their Facebook page.

Before coming to America in 1992, Chawla was part of the hospitality industry in India where he worked in hotels and brought his cooking talents to restaurants. While in Miami, he worked for a cruise line company, later moving to West Springfield in 1994 and working in a couple of restaurants before opening his own. “I felt there was a need locally for a good fine dining experience,” he said about opening Pintu’s Indian Palace some 25 years ago. And voters in The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2022 agree with his decision to open Pintu’s, voting his restaurant #1 for Best Indian Cuisine. “It is a good feeling to be honored for our hard work…..so humbling…..a real morale booster. We offer a product that is consistent in quality along with service with a smile. And I think our customers recognize and appreciate that,” Pintu said. When it comes to the exotic spices that provide the unique flavors to Indian cuisine, you won’t find the chefs at Pintu’s Indian Palace skimping on what makes their dishes so spectacular tasting. “Many fear attempting Indian cuisine because they are wary of spicy foods and mistakenly think that the preparation of exotic ingredients is beyond their taste,“ writes owner Pintu Chawla on the restaurant’s website. But it doesn’t have to be. “When opening my restaurant, I didn’t want to Americanize our traditional dishes, so I don’t hold back when it comes to adding our spices. But I do offer milder versions for those who ask,” Chawla said, noting his Chicken Tikka Masala is most

Being voted Best Auto Repair shop in The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2022 should be a happy time for staff at Brad’s Service Center. But, it is also bittersweet. Brad Leveillee, who built Brad’s Service Center from the ground up back in 1980 passed away in February, just one year after celebrating the shop’s 40th anniversary. “Receiving the Reader Raves award is a tribute to the talents and strength of our team members, many of whom have been with us since the late ’80s and early ’90s and are like family. They have developed many professional relationships with our customers, just like Brad did over the years. It is a tribute to my father that our customers took time out from their day to vote, and it makes me feel what we continue to do in his absence is worth it to our customers,” said Brad’s son Peyton. Peyton, who while growing up worked in his father’s shop during the summer, has returned to the area to lead the family business. “I can’t emphasize enough how thankful I am to our customers for their continued business and trust during the transition. We’re happy to be here in Chicopee to serve the automotive needs of the public,” Peyton said. Reader Raves is not the only accolade Brad’s Service Center has accu-

Walking through the doors of Coopers Gifts in Agawam offers customers an opportunity to shop until their heart’s content before leaving with gifts for everyone and every occasion, even for themselves. “It is wonderful to be #1 and to feel the love of our customers who voted for us,” said owner Kate Gourde about being named Best Gift Boutique in The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2022. “Our customers have been so loyal throughout the pandemic. We were closed for 85 days and I tried to run the entire store by myself…..selling online, offering curbside pickup, and even delivery,” Gourde said. Shoppers will find gifts for every occasion at Coopers where Gourde said they are “always looking for something new and different, exciting, and affordable for customers.” Also, Coopers Gifts has a curtain loft and sells apparel, jewelry and accessories. “We have a strong focus

on selling local products and items made in America,” Gourde said. She noted it is important to give back to the community which has supported her for so many years. “Back in 2014 we established a Round Up Program at the store to benefit a different local charity every month. We ask customers if they would be willing to round up their purchase total to the next dollar and then we match 50% of the total collected. So far, we’ve raised close to $35,000 for charities in need,” she said. Coopers Gifts goes “the whole nine yards,” Gourde noted, and offers complimentary gift wrapping. “That means you can pick out a gift, have it wrapped, then go right to the party afterwards,” she said. BEST LOCAL PET GROOMER The Dog Shop

Praise has been unleashed for The Dog Shop at 15 Baldwin St., East Longmeadow, as voters in The Republican/ MassLive’s Reader Raves named the business Best Local Pet Groomer. BY CORI URBAN Special to The Republican

“We were ecstatic” to learn of the award, said Sandra St. Germain, manager. “We were just so excited about it.” The Dog Shop is a full-service pet salon that provides professional all-breed dog grooming, creative dog grooming, doggie day care, training classes, a self-service dog wash and retail dog items. “We do a lot for our customers and believe that if they bring their dog in for service, they should get exceptional service. We go over and above for our customers,” St. Germain said. The Dog Shop has six full-time employees but is looking to hire more. “Business has increased considerably” since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, St. Germain said. The Dog Shop’s main business is grooming, providing services for 18-25 dogs each day. And some 10-20 dogs attend day care there. All retail dog products sold there are “US made,”

St. Germain said. These include collars, leashes, toys, magnets with dog pictures and homemade dog cookies. St. Germain has worked at The Dog Shop for 22 years. “It’s a job I love,” she said. “I love working with animals. BEST COMMUNITY HERO Andy Yee BY KEITH O’CONNOR

Special to the Republican

This year’s Best Community Hero category in The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2022 has been awarded posthumously to Andy Lee. Restaurateur and businessman Yee - known for his hospitality and devotion to his family and their business Bean Restaurant Group died in May at age 59. “Andy Yee was the king of hospitality. Never met a customer he didn’t like, even the ones who complained. When we did the Fort comeback campaign together, he’d jump up from a meeting to replace a light bulb or top off a low salt shaker. Whatever needed to be done. He had a good eye and never missed

It’s a new year and a brand-new building for McKinstry Market Garden in Chicopee. Last December the wrecking crews came in and demolished their longtime farm stand to replace it with a modern 7,500 square foot building, almost double the size of the old stand. The new store opened in May and now has air conditioning for the warm summer months, as well as heat for the cooler days. “We usually close for the season in October, but now the plan is to stay open until at least Christmas. The boys have a few ideas and we might even stay open lon-

ger,” Nicole McKinstry said, who operates the farm with her husband Willard. The “boys,” as she calls them, are their sons, Will, 22, and Warren, 21, who are poised to continue the family tradition. Customers will find nearly all types of vegetables and early corn and tomatoes at the store during the New England growing season. They also sell flowers, operate a bakery, and now serve ice cream. As a further celebration of a new era for McKinstry Market Garden, voters in The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2022 have shown their support of the century-old farm by selecting it as Best Farm Stand.

“We are very excited about receiving the award and owe it to our customers. It means so much to us that they support us every day. We are passionate about what we do and I believe we have the best produce in the Pioneer Valley,” McKinstry said. Located on 753 Montgomery St. in Chicopee, McKinstry Market Garden is currently open during the season from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit mckinstryfarms.com or call 413-536-2043.

walls, some plumbing for leaky pipes and garbage disposals, and a long list of other projects both residential and commercial. In addition to Reader Raves, Mr. Fix It’s other accolades include Angie’s List Super Service Award honoring professionals who have maintained exceptional service ratings and reviews on Angie’s List. A lack of product and workers due to COVID-19 has created a backlog of home improvement jobs in the industry. “Other than for real emergencies, consumers need to be patient and plan ahead when looking for work to be done,” Gardner said, whose business also received a Reader Raves 2019 award. VOTED BEST HOME IMPROVEMENT CONTRACTOR 3156516-01

How many times have you heard someone refer to a handy friend or relative as “Mr. Fix It?” Well, the “real” Mr. Fix It is Lorenzo M. Gardner, owner of Mr. Fix it Handyman & Remodeling Services, serving Springfield and the surrounding areas for 13 years. “We are problem solvers, that is what we do, helping the community solve issues both big and small projects at an affordable price from insured and licensed contractors,” Gardner said. “I feel really honored and am grateful to our many customers who submitted their votes for us as Best Home Improvement Contractor,” he said about The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2022. A native to Springfield, Gardner formed Mr. Fix It about 12 years ago after

moving back to the area from New York where he operated LG Construction. “Winters are always the most difficult to work outdoors for contractors, and I began to wonder why there wasn’t a local professional handyman company,” he said about his move and focus on creating a handyman business. Nothing is too small for Mr. Fix it. “We’ve been called for everything from dismantling beds to mounting televisions on the wall to helping someone close a stuck window. I try to squeeze in these smaller jobs before the actual workday begins and after it ends, as well as on the weekends,” Gardner said. Bigger jobs include, kitchen/bathroom and basement remodeling, as well as replacement windows, painting, flooring, carpentry including decks, small extensions, removal of interior
