Baby, You’re A Star: Reader Raves 2024!
BY TIERA N. WRIGHTSpecial to The Republican Readers have raved again, and now our coveted awards season is here!
Last year we raised a glass and cheered for 10 years of Reader Raves; and this year we are shining bright with a night amongst the stars. Who needs an Oscar when community support and a Reader Raves plaque is up for grabs. Among the 100 categories, our shining stars include new winners like 6 Brick’s for Best CBD Shop/Dispensary and Loomis Communities for Best Retirement Living Community. While the winners for Best Electric Company and Local Food Truck, Goodless Electric and Macken’s Sliders, respectively, have multiple gold stars under their belts from past years’ wins.
While bragging rights have their merits, this year’s Reader Raves Walk of Fame inductees will take the stage when they are honored at the annual Read-
er Raves Celebration, which will be held at the Log Cabin Banquet & Meeting House in Holyoke on Wednesday, October 18, 2023. In addition to accepting their award, Reader Raves 2024 winners and their guests will enjoy a celebratory evening of food, fun, and plenty of surprises. Reader Raves winners receive two complimentary tickets, with tickets thereafter available for purchase for $75 each by visiting ReaderRavesCelebration.com, or by contacting Coleen Dunn at 413-788-1250 or cdunn@repub. com. Monday, October 2 is the last day to RSVP, but don’t wait –tickets are going fast!
Amassing over 62,000 category votes, voting for Reader Raves 2024 commenced on Sunday, June 4, 2023 and concluded on Monday, July 31, 2023. Throughout that period, participants were able to vote for their favorite businesses (once per valid email address on ReaderRaves.com) falling
under Recommended Services, Where to Shop, Food, Fun & Fitness, and Ask a Local. Reader Raves recipients are not the only winners! Participants who voted in 25 or more categories, won gift certificates to a Reader Raves category winner of their choice. Congratulations go out to our grand prize winner Robin Nagle, who won a $500 gift certificate as well as our second-place winner, David Sanders who won a $250 gift certificate. Both elected to use their gift certificate at Big Y, with Robin Nagle opting to generously donate hers to the Springfield Rescue Mission. Lastly, Deb Gauthier won a $150 gift certificate for West Side Bar & Grill in West Springfield.
As always, Reader Raves would not come together without the team of Republican staff behind it. Most notably, special thanks and recognition are extended to Dave Brinnel (Dave’s Creative), Coleen Dunn,
Michelle Johnson, Gretchen Halasi-Kun, Curtis Panlilio, Jenell Smith, Michele Tingley, yours truly, Tiera Wright and Reader Raves emcee, Mark French.
So, let’s roll out the red carpet as we present and congratu-

There is no denying the popularity of hometown fairs with local folks, but when it comes to voters in The Republican/ MassLive Reader Raves 2024, they have voted The Big E as Best Fair.
“We are honored and humbled to have been selected by MassLive and The Republican readers as Best Fair. People have numerous options for entertainment and we are grateful to

the many residents of western Massachusetts who make The Big E part of their September recreation each year. We have hosted five or more generations of fairgoers in our 107 years, and we look forward to seeing all of our local friends, September 15October 1, for our best Big E yet,” said Gene Cassidy, President and CEO, Eastern States Exposition.
The culmination of a visionary idea first expressed by Joshua L. Brooks, his big idea took shape in the spring of 1917, when 122 of

the nation’s foremost manufacturers presented their products at the Industrial and Export conference in Exposition Park. And, in the fall of that same year, the very first Eastern States Exposition was opened to the public. A total of 138,000 people gathered at what would become an enduring tradition: the annual September event now known as The Big E, “New England’s Autumn Tradition.” More than one million people now attend the annual 17-day Big E.
The Big E has everything, and more, found at smaller local fairs, but on a much grander scale - thus The “Big” E. Big name entertainment this year like Third Eye Blind, BTO, and Chris Young in special ticketed concerts and free daily entertainment at the Court of Honor Stage including O-Town, Dokken, Jose Feliciano and other great acts. A big menu to munch on from one end of the fair to the other. A world-class circus under the Big Top. The Big Parade every day
including authentic Mardi Gras floats. More livestock competitions and agricultural exhibits than you can ever imagine. And that’s just for starters.
Tickets at the gate are $20 for adults, $12 for children ages 6-12, and free to kids 5 and under. Opening day is “Be A Kid for A Day” when all ages are admitted for $12. Visit thebige.com for additional ticket specials and a full line-up of everything happening at this year’s fair.

Best LocaL FamiLy Destination, Best Bakery & Best PLace For Live music The Apple plAce
BY KEITH O’CONNOR Special to the Republican Voters in The Republican/ MassLive Reader Raves 2024think so much about their favorite place to go to that they have recognized The Apple Place with not one, not two, but three awards in the categories of Best Local Family Destination, Best Bakery and Best Place for Live Music.
“We are thankful to our customers for their votes. They are the ones who make this place what it is. They support us by coming here repeatedly to have a good time and their kind words always lift us up,” said Cindy Normandin, owner of The Apple Place with her husband Neal Normandin.
The Apple Place has been a family run fruit farm since 1971, and the property has been farmed since the early 1800s. They are an orchard with over 50 varieties of
apples and also grow peaches and pears. They are a bakery with their taste-tempting pastries made every day on the farm, including cider donuts, all kinds of pies, muffins, scones, cookies, breads, turnovers, and other delights, as well as quiche, soups, and lemonade, iced teas, coffee and more to wash it all down. They are a creamery where they scoop locally-churned ice cream from Maple Valley Creamery in Hadley. And they are a farm with pigs, roosters and chickens to see up-close.
Live music during the warmer weather months, set to the picturesque background of the orchards, is an additional draw for families.
“It’s a peaceful place..... more of a natural environment with muted lighting. People aren’t on their cells. Kids are eating ice cream and dancing. Bands love it as op -
posed to being in a noisy bar, it’s a totally different experience for them,” Normandin said.
When fall arrives, the Normandins open their sixacre “Hometown Carnival” themed corn maze on the weekends through Oct. 29.
“It’s very interactive with games to play throughout the maze, so it doesn’t get boring just looking for the next turn,” Normandin said.
Located on 540 Somers Road, Route 83, in East Longmeadow, The Apple Place is open from April through Thanksgiving. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. They are closed on Mondays.

Best Deli Frigo’s
BY KEITH O’CONNOR Special to the Republican“We’ve always tried to keep our standards high. We’re a small family business, not a franchise, so you get that personal touch. We were taught years ago to always buy the best product to serve to our customers, even if it costs us a little more,” said owner Joe Frigo.
For those reasons and more, voters in The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2024 have once again voted Frigo’s Gourmet Foods as Best Deli.
“We don’t take the award for granted. It’s a great honor.....like a pat on the back as
gift baskets, pates, imported pastas, olive oils, meats, aged balsamic vinegars and much more. They also offer catering services for business functions as well as special celebrations like baptisms, graduations, work events, weddings and fun family and friend get togethers.
The history of Frigo’s dates back to the early 1900s. That’s when the family began immigrating to Chicago from Italy, later opening a cheese factory in Wisconsin. Years later Amadeo Frigo wanted to expand sales and began selling cheese in Connecticut, before opening a store in 1950 in Springfield’s South

Best College or University Holyoke Community College
BY CORI URBANSpecial to The Republican
Question: What do respondents in the annual Republican/Masslive Reader Raves poll think is the Best College or University?
Answer: Holyoke Community College.
Best College or University was but one of 100 categories in the poll that asked for “the best” of things in such categories as Where to Shop; Food, Fun and Fitness; and Recommended Services.
“It is an honor to be named best college or university by Reader Raves and is especially exciting to repeat the honor for the second year,” said Holyoke Community College President George Timmons.
“This is a credit entirely to our faculty, staff, board lead-
ership, alumni and donors who create the environment in which our students can succeed and thrive.”
The college — begun in 1946 as the city-sponsored Holyoke Junior College — now is housed on a
multi-million-dollar, 135acre campus, equipped with state-of-the-art technology in specialized learning facilities.
In addition to academics, it also provides a variety of recreational and cultur-
al activities from sports programs to music festivals for students and community members alike.
An innovative spirit, a sincere concern for students and a commitment to strive for even greater success are
the values that have created a tradition of excellence spanning more than six decades and are enabling Holyoke Community College to meet today’s challenges.
“Our values of innovation, collaboration, kindness, inclusion and trust guide everything we do, and when you are rooted in your values, that is felt by the greater community,” Timmons said. Holyoke Community College’s mission is to educate, inspire and connect.
The annual Reader Raves banquet will take place at the Log Cabin in Holyoke on Oct. 18. Reader Raves 2024 winners and their guests will enjoy a celebratory evening of food, fun and surprises as they take the stage to accept their awards.

Folks who have found peace from taking yoga classes at Heartsong Yoga in East Longmeadow have voted them Best Yoga Studio in the annual The Republican/ MassLive Reader Raves 2024.
They recognize Heartsong studio as a safe, warm and welcoming place for everyone to come and learn about yoga, meditation, mindfulness and healthy living.
“We really love being recognized as excellent in what we do. It validates our work in the community for the past 30 years,” Sheila Magalhaes, owner of Heartsong Yoga with her husband Tony Magalhaes, said.
“Our staff is truly experienced in what they do. They are well-trained and certified and many have been with us since we opened,” she added.
Magalhaes likes to remind her students that “yoga is not just about the physical body.”
“It’s more than exercise
and movement, it is also attention to cultivating kindness and compassion and acceptance of self and one another,” she said.
Heartsong offers Kripalu Yoga and Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga classes for beginners to more advanced students. Ashtanga Yoga is a hot, vigorous, flowing practice for those looking for a more physically challenging pace. Ashtanga combines breath and movement in a specific sequence to create an intense internal heat and purifying sweat, and the result is improved circulation, a light and strong
body, and a calm and quiet mind, or as Magalhaes is fond of saying, “something for ‘every-body.’”
Heartsong Yoga is located on 264 North Main St. in East Longmeadow.

Amazingly today the sales of vinyl records are back on the rise, hitting a new high in 2022 accounting for 71% of all physical music format revenue, as CD sales slouched by 18%.
Joe Demers knows the answer why, and he just happens to be owner of Joe’s Albums in Northampton, voted in this year’s The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2024 as Best Local Record Shop.
“I went down to the basement one day and pulled my dormant record collection upstairs, hooked up my old turntable and fell in love again with the warm sound you get from listening to vinyl records,” Demers said. “I saw a void for selling vinyl in the local area, which eventually
Best LocaL RecoRd shop Joe’s Albums
led to my opening our first store in Worcester in 2012,” he said.
“As nostalgia reigns, others my age are also rediscovering their old vinyl records and experiencing the sound they once enjoyed. And they are turning once again to buying new and used records. Even the younger crowd who enjoy streaming or other services, a certain population prefers more tangible goods and CDs aren’t quite as aesthetically pleasing,” Demers said.
Joe’s Albums has a unique vibe and isn’t one of those stores that cropped up years ago with nothing but racks of used vinyl for sale - no matter what the quality.
“Our focus is on high quality used records which go under rigorous cleaning and a good listen to from us before selling them,” Demers said.
And it’s not just used vinyl. They are a full-service record store selling an extensive line of newly-released vinyl records and a small selection of used compact discs. Joe’s Albums also sell music-related
apparel, mugs, memorabilia and more, including serving as an authorized dealer of Backgroove turntables, amps and other stereo accessories.

BY KEITH O’CONNOR Special to the RepublicanGoing to the dentist isn’t anybody’s idea of fun, but the team at Kasperowski Family Dentistry is making people smile with their painless and anxiety-free dentistry.
The staff’s warm and welcoming manner from the front desk to the dentist chair makes every patient’s visit enjoyable and informative. They believe that a combination of gentle dental techniques, cutting-edge technology, and patient education can minimize nearly any dental fear.
For those reasons and more, voters in The Republican/MassLive Reader Raves 2024 have voted Kasperowski Family
Dentistry in Westfield as Best Dentist or Orthodontists.
“It’s an honor no doubt, but mostly it’s a reflection of our amazing team and of our core focus to be patient centric,” said Dr. Bryan Kasperowski, DMD FAGD.
Dentistry has come a long way today in making dental work painless.
“Technology has certainly made procedures more predictable and comfortable, but our biggest asset is our people. They are very professional, compassionate, experienced, and friendly. This certainly creates a very warm and caring environment which can go a long way to alleviate anxiety,” the popular dentist said.
In addition to Dr. Kasperowski, the dental team includes Dr. Alison Leecock and Dr. Meghan Kelley, who are assisted by a highly-qualified team of dental assistants and hygienists.
Kasperowski Family Dentistry provides comprehensive preventative, restorative, cosmetic and implant dentistry services, as well as Invisalign clear aligner therapy.

BY KEITH O’CONNOR Special to the RepublicanMcKinstry’s Market Garden in Chicopee is true to their motto: “Picked Fresh Daily.” And their customers know it.
That’s why voters in this year’s The Republican/ MassLive Reader Raves 2024 have let their feelings be known - McKinstry’s Market Garden is Best Farm Stand.
“We are excited and thrilled to know once again that our customers have chosen us Best Farm Stand. It tells us that our customers are loyal and here to support our family farm and will continue to be with us as we pick fresh daily. It’s just amazing to be recognized for what we do,” said Nicole McKinstry, owner of the farm along with her husband Willard McKinstry.
Visit their website mckinstryfarms.com for a chart by month of fruit and vegetables available at the store and what they are currently picking.
The farm currently operates on many acres of land throughout the Pioneer Valley, where they grow all types of fruits and vegetables, specializing in early corn and tomatoes during the New England growing season. They grow 40-50 different varieties of corn, mostly yellow and white. And they are still picking.
“It’s an exciting time for us right now. We are in the midst of harvesting all of our winter squash and some 20 varieties of pumpkins in different colors. We will be picking sweet corn until mid-October and tomatoes hopefully into November, all depending on the first
frost,” McKinstry said.
Speaking of the weather, McKinstry noted it is a farmer’s best and worst friend.
“We had 16 acres of crops in Hadley flooded with the heavy rain this summer,” she said.
McKinstry’s Market Garden also sells flowers, operates a bakery, and serves ice cream.
Located on 753 Montgomery St. in Chicopee, McKinstry’s Market Garden no longer closes for the season in October and is now open all year long from Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

BY CORI URBAN Special to The RepublicanLorenzo M. Gardner has built a successful handyman and remodeling business, Mr. Fix It Handyman & Remodeling Services — so successful that it was named Best Home Improvement Contractor in the recent Reader Raves poll conducted by The Republican and Masslive.
Founder, owner and president of “the original” Mr. Fix It Handyman & Remodeling, he said what makes the business stand out is its ability to handle more than one job.
With construction supervisor and home improvement licenses, Mr. Fix It can handle a variety of residential and commercial exterior and interior jobs including decks,

But also key to the business’ success is quality work. “When we complete the job, it’s done so it lasts,” Gardner said. “We basically have zero call back” for repairs.
But it’s not just quality work that customers appreciate. Gardner said “it’s the whole ball of wax” including punctuality and returning calls.
