CENTRAL PRINCIPAL, THADDEUS TOKARZ To the Parents and Guardians of the Class of 2020, on behalf of the entire faculty at Springfield Central High School, I want to thank you for giving us the opportunity to spend the last four years educating your children and for trusting us to deliver an education that provided the growth and development necessary for your child to be successful in our 21st century society. We hope we met your expectations. To the Class of 2020, words cannot describe how proud I am of your accomplishments and how sorry
I am that we cannot celebrate those accomplishments together, in person. The Class of 2020, you have had a storied four years at Springfield Central High School. From the moment you entered the building, until the last day of your senior year, your positive impact was felt throughout every aspect of our school. Your professionalism, willingness to
accept all challenges, and ability to overcome any obstacle is how you will forever be remembered. Class of 2020 has reached historic success both academically and athletically. Academically, you will leave Central High School posting a graduation rate of over 90% and earning almost 10 million dollars in scholarship money. Athletically,
your class has had one of the greatest senior years in the history of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, winning three State championships in only two seasons and being awarding athletic scholarships to some of the finest colleges and universities in the world. We all know, however, that none of these accom-
plishments came easy. The Class of 2020, the grit, perseverance, and integrity needed to accomplish these goals is what you need to carry with you as you begin your next chapter. In your life, you will undoubtedly come across instances where you will struggle. Thoughts of quitting, giving up, and deserting your responsibilities will sometimes creep into your mind. In those times, please reflect to when you had a similar situation at Central and what you did Please see Tokarz page 4

to effectively overcome your troubles. Your toughness, resilience, and determination is why you are a Springfield Central High School graduate and a Scholar and a Champion. You are a Golden Eagle and are prepared to overcome anything and everything that may stand in the way of your hopes and your dreams. Please understand that your relationship with Central High School is just beginning. You will now enter the prestigious family of alumni who will help
guide and support you through this monumental transition. And remember, when times get tough, and things seem overwhelming, you always have a home at 1840 Roosevelt Ave that you can stop in to get the advice, support, understanding, and love that you may need. In closing, it is my wish that you will miss Central High School as much as Central High School will miss you. Good Luck, God bless, and Congratulations on this great accomplishment. -Principal Thaddeus Tokarz
speakers, hearing “get in” the second the bell rings, rushing to take your hoodie off the second you see a principal, running from the shopping carts during a sweep, these became our norms. This became what we were used to and soon enough four years flew by and we were done. Except this year, this class was different. We didn’t get the last two and a half months of our high school life. We went to school on March 12th and never came back. It’s hard to think about what we would’ve done differently had we known. But that’s the thing about life. You never know when things are gonna change in an instant and your whole world gets flipped upside down.
It’s important that from this we learn to always live in the moment, and embrace life for what it truly is. You never know what tomorrow or the next day may bring so live in today. We have to focus on what we do have and what we can do in the future. We are now officially high school graduates from Springfield Central High School. We are officially starting on our journey into adulthood. Starting on the road that leads us to our families and future lifestyle. So it’s important that we look back on high school and reflect on what we learned and not on what we missed. At Central we learn to be responsible for our own things and we learned that there are consequences if
you don’t follow through. At Central we learned about balance and time management whether it be with academics, clubs, or your social life. At Central we learned how to find “our people”. At Central we became a family and we are a strong family. A family that through our ups and downs will always stick together. We will forever be united and known as a class that kept moving when the world came to a halt. Now together and separately we are all starting our journey. It may seem scary, going into the unknown again, having to repeat the cycle. But remember we aren’t alone. This isn’t goodbye, it’s just see you later.

We all entered those doors on our first day feeling a whirlwind of emotions, determined to make these next four years the best years of our life. Determined to make the most and make everlasting memories, and friends. Following advice from previous freshmen such as don’t wear your school ID on your lanyard or don’t take your schedule out while walking in the halls. Trying to not get lost in the hallways, figuring out which lunch we had, going from one end of the school to the complete other end of the school in four minutes, waiting in long lunch lines, forgetting your ID and having to get a temp, listening to the announcements over barely audible

Welcome Commerce graduates of the class of 2020. Welcome to the families, friends, and fans of the
Commerce class of 2020 graduates. Congratulations on making it to this day. When was the last time you started something new? A new relationship? A new adventure? A new challenge? Or even a new start? You are on the doorstep of that time right now. This isn’t the graduation you expected. You are not with friends. You are not planning visits to family. You are not going to graduation parties. There is a new normal now. The new norms may seem frightening. They may seem unfamiliar. These norms may feel like they are holding you back. But these aren’t the first obstacles you’ve en-
countered. There have been many other mountains in your way over the years – whether that was with passing classes, making new friends, and growing into the person you are today. You have succeeded despite the norms that have held you back. The old norms are behind you now. And that brings us back to the new norms. What are they? Despite a worldwide pandemic, some new norms are providing hope in the world where there was none. In India, there are blue skies in the day and stars at night over the capital city of New Delhi for the first time in years, the Himalayan moun-
tain range is visible on the horizon from a great distance for the first time in years, and rivers that were clogged and filthy for years are now flowing cleanly. Although people there have been apart and living in fear, the new norms have brought hope too. The new norms are bringing blue skies and stars for you as well. This is your opportunity to be leaders. To create and define what the new normal will bring to the world. Your world. The new norms make space for your creativity. To build. To discover. To dream. And to make your dreams a reality. The new normal is the right time for you to be creative.
The old answers don’t apply anymore. The world will look to you for new answers. What will you do? How will you lead? Who will go with you. Parents. Caregivers. Grandparents. Teachers. Friends. Call on the relationships and memories from your past to drive you ahead. Go bravely forward into the new normal. As leaders. As learners. As stewards. As graduates. Go out and find your new horizon. Congratulations Class of 2020!
years of high school. I was even given the responsibility of team captain in just my sophomore year, a position that I took with immense pride and seriousness. I went through my years in high school without belonging to any specific “cliques,” but instead becoming a part of a smaller group of friends who in turn, changed my high school experience for the better. On a more personal note, I want to share with you all parts of my life story that I strongly believe played a substantial factor in my drive & perseverance to finally make it to this day we’ve all been waiting for; our graduation. As some of you may know, I live in a foster home, and have been for the last 2 years. I started my first year of high school living in a group home, a large house with anywhere
from 8-11 other girls also living there at a time. I lived there for almost a year, and my time there was certainly anything but normal to come home to. For most teenagers, or even children at any age, adjusting to multiple different settings and living situations can be difficult. Moving from place to place many times throughout my life and experience with DCF, has helped me to adapt to the natural ability of adjusting quickly to each new house, city, and situation I was placed in. However, regardless of where I was, or how well I was proving to do, there was always the stereotype that I was expected to fail. Unfortunately, this expectation may also sound a bit more familiar to some of my fellow classmates as well, DCF or not. Many of us are

I want to begin my speech by offering you all a bit of insight on myself. I was not born and raised in Springfield. I moved here the summer before freshman year, and the thought of attending high school in the city was both a new and exciting experience for me. Before moving to Springfield, I had lived in quite a few other small towns.
In these towns, there was one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school for everyone to attend. Oftentimes in these towns, you are going to school with the same people you’ve known since kindergarten; growing up together, raising havoc in middle school, attending your first school football game, first day of high school, prom, and all other memorable school events. This is something that is very different compared to the situations in inner-city schools such as our own. Four years ago I was a new student at an inner city school: The High School of Commerce. The uniforms, the people, and the size of the school were all a new adjustment for me, but ones that I believe I adapted to fairly well. I continued my dedication to softball by playing for the school’s team all 4

HEAD OF SCHOOL, DR. PAUL HARRINGTON This has been an extraordinary time in our lives and while the end of high school is not how any of us imagined it, I commend our seniors for their positive spirit and for the way they have embraced adversity with class. I know I speak on behalf of the teachers, coaches, and staff at Pope Francis Preparatory School, when I say we are all so proud of their accomplishments and we congratulate them on the completion of this huge milestone in their life! I have been immensely impressed by how the Pope Francis Prep community, particularly our senior class has come together during these unprecedented circumstances – how our faculty and staff have adapted to ensure that learning continues and how our students have remained engaged in their studies and have been

bright-spirited and kind in their response to the changes we have had to make. I am thankful too for the parents, alumni, and friends of our community for their willingness to work together to continue this forward momentum for the past few months. To our senior class: This incredible journey we call high school has brought
us to this time to celebrate your achievements and accomplishments. Your journey has been supported by the generosity of hundreds of benefactors who have provided their time, talents, and treasure to support your education. I am grateful to your parents for entrusting you to our care and for serving as our partners and ambassadors in Catholic education. We are grateful for their continued support and prayers. And, you would not be here at the finish line without the compassion, talent, dedication, and generosity of the faculty and staff at Pope Francis Prep. They have had your back the whole way! I am very optimistic and excited for you! I believe that you are well-equipped to face any challenge. I have seen that you can be reflective, prayerful, and compassionate. Our faculty have pushed you to learn from one another and to devote yourself to your studies. Per-
severance was required to thrive in a Pope Francis Prep classroom and on the courts and the fields and the rink. Your teachers and coaches stood by your side and encouraged you to pick yourself up and continue trying. I look forward to seeing how each of you put your Pope Francis Prep education to work in different fields, professions, and graduate programs. You are a talented and diverse bunch, and I am confident that you will make us all very proud. Strive to keep Pope Francis Prep’s core values a part of your life. Live a life of faith and compassion and place the needs of others before your own. Persevere through life’s challenges to better yourself, your family, and your community. In addition to our core values, your class shares values that our society needs, like a commitment to service; a genuine concern and respect for the environment; an appreciation of different views; and an understanding of the importance of collaboration across and within communities. As you explore the world, remember the time that you spent here at Pope. Keep in touch with each other and with us. I will continue to pray for each of you as you embark on the next chapter of your life and I ask that you pray for future Cardinals who will sit in your seat one day. My most sincere congratulations to you, the Pope Francis Preparatory School Class of 2020!

As the Class of 2020, we are supposed to represent 20/20 vision. Even though no one could have seen this future that we inhabit now, we are better than that. 20/20 vision is average visual acuity, but I believe that our visions for the future are much brighter and clearer than just average. Before me is an incredible class who established a legacy for Pope Francis Preparatory School. Our innovators, artists, and athletes paved the way in the otherwise uncharted territory before us. Four years ago, we became the matriculating class of PFPS. Four years ago, we entered a way-toosmall building where we got stuck in senior walls. Four years ago, we met many of our classmates that are here with us now who would go on to change our lives. Four years ago, I chanted, “Four more years! Four more Please see Commisso page 13

years!” with my Latin class. Four years later, I am extremely proud to congratulate our class for all our achievements; the brilliant, talented, and compassionate people we matured into; and for making it to this milestone we celebrate today. Our futures may have been hazy before, but whether it is eight, four, two, or no more years of traditional education left, we are all on a journey of securing what lies ahead. A continual source of inspiration I’ve turned to is the One Punch Man anime theme song, with lyrics translated as, “Hero! The tallest mountain started as a stone. I once was weak but now I’ve grown. Hero! I know the weakness within is my greatest foe.” For everything that was thrown at our class, from moving, to Surfaces, to corona, we have demonstrated our fortitude. We can be the heroes of our own lives by continuing to be the good people we truly are and by standing tall in the face of adversity, remembering that only our weaknesses within can hold us back. I would like to thank everyone who helped us become the strong, passionate, and kind class we are today. Thank you to our faculty, staff, teachers, friends, families, and parents who played a significant role in our development as students, young adults, and people ready to impact the world. In my journey, Mr. Anziano,
Mr. DeCoteau, Mr. Estabrook, Mrs. Kinsey, Dr. McGlathery, Mr. Salloum, Mrs. Woltschlaeger, and all my friends made my high school experience more enjoyable and guided me to the future I have now. Thank you. I also want to thank someone who has had one of the biggest influences on my life, as my mentor, best friend, and brother. Nick, I have looked up to you my entire life—literally—and I owe my successes to you. To my entire family, thank you for being my teachers outside of school and for your incessant love. I love you all. Most of all, thank you, God, for lighting the way to this point. Our resilience remains strong because of Your protection over us for all these years and into the beyond. As we move into that beyond, let us remember someday. Someday, we may be highly successful in whatever form that success takes. Someday, we will laugh at our memories of high school. Someday, we may appreciate the opportunities this pandemic brought to us. We say someday, but right now is someday, too, so snatch up the opportunities, learn everything you can, laugh at yourself, and maintain a vision for your life that is much more vivid than 20/20. I most sincerely thank you for offering your kindness and friendship to me for these four years. I look forward to reading about your successes. Congratulations to our class of 2020!

ourselves up for what is to come. Undoubtably, this class is one of Putnam’s most successful classes in history! It is very unfortunate that we can’t all be together today due to events that are happening in the world but think about it this way, we’re the first high school class ever to graduate virtually, this is indeed the future. Graduates, you are all destined for greatness, each and every single one of you have grown to become strong, intellectual individuals and all of us have the ability to change the world and leave a great impact on this earth. At Putnam, we were presented with many challenges and obstacles that we had to over-
CLASS PRESIDENT, XAVIER BONIFACIO On behalf of the Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy’s class of 2020, I would like to welcome and thank faculty, alumni, family, and friends for joining us on this beautiful day where we celebrate this first momentous stepping stone into our adult lives. To my fellow class of 2020, we finally made it! I remember freshman year like it was yester-
day, everybody coming into high school ready to have the best 4 years of our lives, going through Putnam’s shops and having glimpses of what our future might be within them, but then there was academics. Throughout these 4 years Putnam has provided us with the tools we need to be successful in life and to build
come such as waking up in the morning on time, and working on the next classes homework during lunch, but at the end of the day it
made us more powerful mentally and emotionally. This year did not end like we would have hoped but even though we aren’t together we all will always be a family till the very end. There’s these two quotes that I always look back to and I want to share them with you, “Make your life a masterpiece; imagine no limitations on what you can be, have or do” - Brian Tracy, and the other is, “The habit of persistence is the habit of victory” - anonymous. So as we part ways into a life full of challenges, look back at these quotes and follow your dreams the way you want to and never let anybody stop you or get in your way, we are the future and nothing will ever hold us back. When you feel like your being held down, look back at today and know that if you did this, you can do anything you put your mind to. Be phenomenal, as the great street poet Drake once said, “When writing the story of your life, don’t let anyone else hold the pen”. Congratulations class of 2020, we did it!

RENAISSANCE PRINCIPAL, ARRIA COBURN Congratulations to the class of 2020! I’ve struggled with what to say to all of you for some time, partly because of the magnitude of what needs to be said. Your creativity on how to enhance the list of options granted by the senior license, was cut short! All the planning you did leading up to this moment was disrupted, and I am so sad for all of you. But let’s look ahead! You are graduating during a time when your voice is needed now more than ever. Unlike times when graduates have embarked on the months after graduation with plans to check items off their bucket-list, your list of action items

confident that each of you will rise to the challenges and duties required to be a sounding board for the future--because that’s what we do; WE. ARE. PHOENIX. As the class of Cultural Sensitivity, your voice within our walls has been invaluable, holding your peers, teachers, and leaders accountable to having tough conversations and working toward change. This is what you need to bring to the world. Be loud, be the voice for positive change in the world—make it what you want it to be. I do hope you will all come back and visit! Go out and be bold! RENAISSANCE CLASS PRESIDENT, ABBY BRUNTON To the Springfield Renaissance Class of 2020, First, I would like to start off by giving each and every one of you a huge congratulations. You did it! You all are high school graduates. The amount of pride that I have for this class is unimaginable. The growth I have witnessed over the past seven years has been amazing. We are no longer those tiny sixth graders making sure we had a binder and pencil for Mrs. Ekmalian’s math class. We are future college students, military personnel, and active members of the workforce. All that we have worked for over the years is finally paying off. Our class is truly one of a kind. I can bet that every single senior if asked will tell you that the Class of

2020 is the best Renaissance has seen yet; they might even say that we carry Renaissance on our backs! And although I may be slightly biased, I truly believe that this class is a game changer--not just in the classroom, but out in real life. We are a group of passionate, young leaders who were unafraid of difficult (and at times uncomfortable) conversations. We were okay with breaking the norms when needed in order to enact change, whether it was within our school or in life outside of Renaissance. Being able to grow up with you all and see the
young adults you have become has been beautiful for me. Some of the shy ones have become the most passionate, some of the class clowns have become serious, the non confrontational have found their voice. Your voice. That is one thing I want each and every one of you to take with you, whatever your next chapter is. Do not be afraid to use your voice. You have it. We all know how to use it--trust me I have seen it. Ask for the raise, ask for help, advocate for yourselves. You all have so much potential; do not let anything get in your way. I know the world is not pretty, I know that some of you are going to have to work ten times harder to be seen, but I want you to know that you deserve to be seen and do not let anyone say otherwise. Be kind. Be great. Be you. Best of luck to everyone and please stay safe. #Renway Abby Brunton

Welcome Everyone, I want to first start off with greeting Mayor Sarno, Superintendent Warwick, School Committee Members, Principal Lalime, Administration, teachers, family, and fellow graduates of the Class of 2020. Thank you everyone for coming out to support and congratulate the Class of 2020. I know that things have been rough throughout these past few months due to the virus, but I want to let the whole class know that I am proud of you guys. Our senior year
was not easy, but we managed to pull through and finish strong. Throughout these past four years, many of us have grown into the young adults we are today. Some of you already have plans for after high school, and some of you may not. I know we didn’t have the ideal senior year due to COVID-19, such as not being able to have prom, class day, senior skip day, etc. No matter the difficulties, we all managed to pull through. Now we’re all here today, starting the next chapter of our lives. Each and every single one of you should be beyond proud. Everyone has their own challenges, no matter what you have gone through, you managed to complete high school and that’s a huge

Congratulations. Your hard work, dedication, honest emotion, and love for your child is the primary reason we are all gathered here this evening. For that I thank you. Thank you for making this night possible. Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to work with your son or daughter throughout the last 3 years. Thank you for trusting me, trusting the High School of Science and Technology, and keeping us honest each step of the way. Thank you. I leave you with these words from Legendary Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, that capture what will be needed as you continue moving forward in your child’s future: Put it there if it weighs a ton That’s what a father said to his young son I don’t care if it weighs a ton As, long as you and I here, put it there. Now the Graduating Class of 2020 Ladies and Gentlemen: I am truly sorry we are not able to be together to celebrate your achievement in the traditional sense—but—the Class of 2020 is not traditional. The Class of 2020 is Historic. The Class of 2020 will never be Forgotten. Your Legacy will forever be entrenched in the Future of the High School of Science and Technology. There are many emotions being felt tonight: happiness, sadness, confidence, and fear. These are all Good Feelings, These are feelings that will make us stronger. I am all these feelings right now. I am happy for all your success and future accomplishments there will be many I am happy to have worked with you over the last three years. The ups, the downs, the ex-
citement, the frustration, the lunch periods, the staying after school until seven pm chilling, the fact that at some point we were all Out of Control. Makes me very happy thinking about it right now. I am sad, I am sad knowing that I will not be having breakfast with you each morning. I am sad because soon I will no longer be able to tell you Lets Go, Lets Go, Lets Go ! I am sad because the High School of Science and Technology will no longer be involved in your decision making process you will be on your own. And now I am scared I fear that you will make a Sci-Tech Salutatorian, mistake the wrong decision, Bryan Martin that you will be hurt, that you Reminder Publishing submitted photo will not have the right answer. I am afraid that I will no longer be able to help you, Students, faculty, friends, guide you, talk to you, and yes and family. Today, I am proud tell you Lets Go, Lets Go, Lets to congratulate the class of Go. I am afraid that things will not work out, that you will be all alone. Fear Transcends. Then I remember, you are a Cybercat, a life-long member of the Sci-Tech family I am confident that you will succeed, that you will challenge and that you will be challenged, and that you will continue to persevere. I am confident that you have been given the skills needed to distinguish yourself and have the self-confidence to be yourself. I am proud. I am proud of you, I am proud of your accomplishments, your grit, your hopes and your dreams. I am proud to be here with you for one last day, For one las moment, for one last time to say Lets Go, Lets Go, Lets Go. So Go Now and Do us Proud, Work Hard and Take Chances And Always Be Sci-Tech Strong Congratulations Class of 2020.

2020. Despite the challenges we have faced this year, we have come out stronger. I would like to thank all of my teachers but would like to give a special shout out to my choir teacher, Mr. P, not only for teaching me how to sing but for making it fun along the way. During my four years at SciTech, my teachers have pushed me to reach my fullest potential, by helping me get into advanced classes. In my life I have overcome many challenges. I was diagnosed with autism at the age of three although few may see this as a disability. I have never let this define my life or my achievements. I have never viewed myself as different. Because of my autism I was
given alternative devices for learning and communicating with others. I chose to not use them because I wanted to be seen as equal. To think that in preschool I was not able to talk and now am standing here today to give a speech to my class and encourage others like me that they can also succeed. I would like to end this with a message, there is no such thing as normal our differences make us human. Thank you to my family, friends, and teachers who have helped throughout this journey. It was an honor to be the salutatorian of the SciTech Class of 2020. Good luck seniors and I hope you continue to persevere in this new chapter of your life.
