When Samuel Bowles founded the paper in 1824, he not only was publisher, but also editor, typesetter and printer.

The Republican’s current business model would amaze and confound the first of the three Samuel Bowles who guided this newspaper.

Today, The Republican is more than a daily newspaper. We are one of the largest commercial printers of newspapers and periodicals in the northeast.

We pride ourselves on printing high quality products that are delivered on time, and right to your door.

Your go-to source for high-volume, high-quality commercial printing.

Fonts

Type and font usage can be a little tricky on newsprint. A common element that many overlook is 4-color black. It’s pretty much impossible to register a font (or any detailed graphic) in 4-color black on a web press running newsprint. The final result will be a blurry or hazy outcome - when all the colors don’t line up perfectly. Using colored type can be done effectively however. Limiting your color combination to one or two colors and using type that is bigger and bolder will help. Knock outs, or white type on a colored background, follow similar principles. The bigger the type - the better, limit your colors and avoid using knock out text over photos or backgrounds with many colors.

Small type is defined as:

• Sans-serif type that is 7 points or smaller

• Serif type that is 12 points or smaller

• Fine-serif type, such as Bodoni, that is 14 points or smaller

Reversed Rules and Type:

Type smaller than 12 points should not be reversed on a four-color background and type smaller than 10 points should not even be reversed on a single-color background. Serif type and fine-serif type should not be reversed at sizes smaller than 12 points, and even in cases of larger type, it is best to check with the printer. Type should not be reversed on a yellow or other light-colored background.

Newspapers are printed at high speeds which means reverse fonts and hairlines are dependent on perfect registration to maintain legibility. Though newspaper presses are highly technical, the physical limitations of high speed printing on newsprint results in registration variability. Keep this in mind when files are created.

Photos

When adding photos into a printed product on newsprint it is important to know (and use) the correct resolution. Resolution refers to the number of tiny dots it takes to create the image. For a computer screen 72 dots per inch (or dpi) is all it takes for a clear image. A much higher resolution is required when products are printed. For exampleimages printed in a glossy magazine require a resolution of 300dpi at the intended print size for that image. For newspapers a dpi of 200 is preferred. An image with a dpi over 200 will print the same as a 300 or 400dpi image... but the files will be much larger in size.

Line art and single color logos:

For line art and logos that are composed of a single color, a file at print size should be 600dpi for the best detail.

A few quick pointers

• Check your resolution.

• Make sure the photo is in CMYK color mode.

• The higher the contrast the better for reproduction. Photos will consistently print a little darker on newsprint. Newsprint is porous and will absorb the ink. This is called dot gain.

Color Usage and Paper

Printing and designing with newsprint is a unique medium that is much different than other types of printing and design. Below are a few differences to keep in mind.

COLOR: Reproducing all the colors from your computer screen on paper is impossible, and even more limited on newsprint. Keep in mind less is more when using color. Colors that are deeply saturated will reproduce very dark, muddied and dull. Using coverage less than 220% for any color will help keep colors brighter. For example Cyan: 100% + Magenta: 20% + Yellow: 100% = 220% coverage.

PAPER: Newsprint in any weight is porous. When designing for, and printing on this type of paper it is good to keep in mind that the colors may bleed slightly. This is called “dot-gain”. So when two colors are printed closely together, the point where they meet or overlap may bleed slightly. Newsprint is never bright white. The paper has varying degrees of a gray-ish tint to it, which is another reason to try and keep your colors on the brighter side.

Customer Testimonials

The Daily Gazette company made the difficult decision to close our printing facility in July of 2023 and put the future of our newspapers in the hands of The Republican printing company. They have been outstanding partners and have treated our products as if they were their own. We could not be happier with our decision and I would suggest that anyone in the geographic area consider using them.
