honeymoon DESTINATION INSPIRATION:
Compiled by Allison Litera
When planning a wedding sometimes the very last thought will be your honeymoon. Planning for your honeymoon can be a huge undertaking in itself, especially if you travel abroad to some place you’ve never been before. If you’re stuck on a place to go, we asked local brides and grooms where they went for their honeymoons to give you some inspiration!
ITALY “We went to Italy for 10 days and it was incredible! We went in April, whichwasn’t peak tourist season so that was nice. We stayed in Venice, Tuscany, and Sorrento, but Tuscany was our favorite. So amazing, and we were afraid it would feel more like a trip than a honeymoon but it didn’t at all. We highly recommend it, so romantic!” – Kate and Vincent B. “Our honeymoon was in Taormina, Sicily, and then a tour traveling Italy.
8
We went through a travel agent from Doyle Travel Center in Chicopee, MA. In Taormina we stayed at Villa Carlotta. I did a LOT of research on where to stay in Sicily. We knew we wanted to relax after a very busy week of wedding prep and the wedding itself. I found that Taormina was where Italians like to go for their own vacations and listed as a top romantic destination. This Villa was a top Travelers Choice of 2014. We stayed in the love nest, which is a private apartment up the street from the Villa on the top floor with a large private terrace overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and Mount Etna. For excursions in Taormina we visited the beach, the Greek theater, public gardens, walked everywhere and ate/ drank our way through. Taormina is small with a ton of shops, bars, restaurants, cafes, and history. The second half of our honeymoon was a Globus tour, the Italian Tapestry, which was set up through our travel agent. The tour included Venice, Florence, Siena, Rome, Sorrento and Capri.” – Nikki and Jonathan C.
PACIFIC NORTHWEST “The majority of our trip took place in and all over Washington state in July. We spent three days and two nights hiking in the backcountry in a place called the Enchanted Valley, near Quinault and part of Olympic National Park. After that we traveled to Orcas Island via ferry. While on the island, we stayed in a tiny house at Pebble Cove Farm, an inn and organic farm. That was neat. We collected eggs for breakfast from the farm’s chickens and snacked on vegetables from the garden. While on Orcas Island, we hiked, swam, kayaked, ran, and ate a lot of delicious food. It was a magical place. We then made our way to the Sahale Glacier Camp, which is part of the North Cascades National Park. We hiked six miles in and set up camp in the most breathtaking place we have ever been. We finished the trip in Seattle for two nights, spending time with friends, going to a concert, eating lots of delicious food, and enjoying tourist time. We stayed in an AirBnB apartment in the Fremont
neighborhood. We had considered going somewhere tropical during the wintertime but did not want to contend with snowstorms potentially impacting flights. Washington was appealing for the massive amount of outdoor options, its beauty, and because neither of us had spent much time there.” – Krysten F. and Brad M. MEXICO “We stayed at the Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso in Riviera Maya, Mexico (about 45 minutes from the Cancun airport). The entire Iberostar property in Riviera Maya has five resorts that are all separated from each other. The Grand Hotel Paraiso is adults only, which made it extremely appealing, and it granted you access to all restaurants, pools, activities, etc. at the other four properties onsite. Excursions included ATV rides through the rain forest in Riviera Maya and a canopy ropes course. The resort itself offered paddle-boarding, sailing, and snorkeling, included in our stay so we took advantage of those activities as well. In addition, we chose this destination based on its high ratings for food and beverage. We are foodies, so this was important to us. The restaurants where we stayed had amazing options, and there were tequila experts at each venue that offered us different selections with meals. Each room at this resort has its own butler included in the cost, which was a nice addition to our honeymoon.” – Chrissy and Brian K.
DISNEY WORLD “We stayed at the Polynesian Resort in Disney World! We were only there for four days because of the school year (we both work at an elementary school), but it was so much fun! We loved that Disney did so many fun things for our honeymoon like special treats and surprises around every corner.” – Nicolle and Patrick M. DISNEY WORLD… AND THEN THE BAHAMAS “First stop was Disney World. We stayed on property at Port Orleans Riverside. We went to all four Disney theme parks as well as Universal Studios. We chose Disney because we both hadn’t been since we were young children and wanted to go together and have lots of activities to do. After that we traveled to Nassau, Bahamas. We stayed at the Sandals Royal Bahamian. We chose the Bahamas because we wanted somewhere tropical, relaxing and all-inclusive after the wedding and Disney. We ate, drank, and sat by the pool and beach. We didn’t leave the resort property.” – Stacey and Kevin P. COSTA RICA “We spent a week at Westin Playa Conchal in Guanacaste (Pacific Coast side) in their adults-only section. It was phenomenal! All inclusive, great food, fab excursions and a true place to just enjoy each other. We want to go back for an anniversary trip!” – Karla A.S.R. and Eliel N.D. “We stayed at Tree House Lodge on the Caribbean coast for five nights, then drove 8-9 hours north to stay in Secrets Papagayo Resort & Spa for
seven nights! The long drive was the only downside, but we made a fun road trip out of it. It was the most gorgeous country we’ve ever been to. The food was delicious and the people we met were so kind and friendly!” – Nick C. and Bailly M.C. ARUBA “It was great staying at an all-inclusive adults-only hotel, the Hotel Riu Palace Antillas. We liked that you could book excursions through the resort and that it had its own beach. We did a sunset sail and an ATV tour of the island. We could also take a cab into the capital to explore.” – Mark and Rebecca S. JAMAICA “We stayed at the Sandals in Negril. Absolutely loved it! The food was amazing, the room was beautiful and the ocean was calm and clear. Only thing is that it kept getting hotter, we wouldn’t recommend going in July or August.” – Chenoa and Aaron M. ST. LUCIA “We went to Sandals Regency La Toc All Inclusive Beach Resort in Castries, St. Lucia. There are many, many different variations of rooms; our room specifically was called the Sunset Bluff Oceanview Room. We got married in June but wanted to wait a week after our wedding, which we both highly recommend. We wanted a week in between to recoup as the wedding took a lot out of us! Our main objective during out honeymoon was to relax and unwind so we didn’t pick many excursions. We did one excursion, a four-wheeler ATV. We went to St. Lucia because we wanted something that was all-inclusive but

in a reputable area. We had both been to St. Lucia before and thought it was beautiful. We would HIGHLY recommend an all-inclusive resort. There is just something about being able to leave your room and walk to dinner with a glass of wine in your hand that is so heavenly after the stress of wedding planning. It is also super romantic!” – Jillian and Ben C.
“We traveled to Soufriere, St. Lucia in February and stayed at an Airbnb, which was amazing. It was called with your choice Serrana Villa and our host was of a variety of truly incredible, providing us with fillings & icings food, information about the area, transportation to and from the airport, and on-call chauffeurs to drive us to various locations in the area. The house Cupcake was clean and had two bedrooms, two Wedding Trees bathrooms, an office, a large kitchen, and Fancy a living room, and a deck with a pool Cookie that had a view of the Piton Mountains. Platters for The house also had WiFi, which was Receptions really helpful. We stayed in Soufriere the whole time because there was no Cake tastings at your convenience need to go anywhere else! We went 195 Russell Street to three different beaches: Sugar Route 9 Hadley • 586-9900 Beach, Hummingbird Beach, and Anse Republican Wedding Ad.pdf 1 8/13/19 8:05 PM Open: Tues.-Fri. 8-5 • Sat. 8-4 • Closed Sun. & Mon. Chastanet. You could spend a whole Wedding Cake Delivery Available on Sunday
day at Sugar Beach and Anse Chastanet because there are amazing, picturesque restaurants, clean bathrooms, and fun activities such as boat rides and snorkeling. We also went to two different waterfalls, one of which was heated by the volcano. There were mud baths, which was a fun and very affordable experience. We did not tour the volcano, although that is an option. There are other nature-based activities around the island, including hiking the Pitons and going zip lining, but we decided to opt out of those activities this time around. Lastly, we went to Hotel Chocolat, where we made our own chocolate bars out of cocoa butter, cocoa beans, and sugar. We didn’t know much about St. Lucia before we booked our honeymoon, just that it was in the Caribbean. We heard that St. Lucia was one of the most romantic islands in the Caribbean, so we decided to just book a house and explore! It was the trip of a lifetime and we wouldn’t change a thing. We plan to return someday soon!” – Kristin and Dean M. *Note: the hotels and destinations mentioned in this article have not paid to be featured in this story in any way.

sparkling stars will catch the light and onlookers’ eyes.
Complete your head-to-toe bridal look with what’s trending as toppers. Bridal shops and Etsy.com are starting to see a larger variety of veils and bridal headpieces to truly customize a bride’s look.
VINTAGE Birdcage veils are fantastic for a bride who wants to keep her veil on all night. This style can be adhered to the head with a small bow or a jeweled cap. For vintage-loving brides who want more coverage than a birdcage veil, opt for a Juliet cap veil. This style is a long veil fit snug to the head with an embellished bandeau or a flower crown. Or try a delicate Mantilla veil or drop veil, which are secured to the head with nothing but a small comb or several hair pins, giving an effortless look. If you want to get a real vintage topper, seek out local vintage shops or don your mother or grandmother’s headpiece from their own wedding day.

EMBELLISHED VEIL Whether it’s decked out with crystals, pearls, floral or filigree embroidery, consider choosing a finish that compliments your dress. If your dress is plainer, an embellished veil can add some extra flair. If your dress already has a lot to it, a simply embellished veil can add the right finishing touch. CELESTIAL VEIL Starry, starry brides who want to glitter their way down the aisle can choose a veil with sparkling star details. Glittering details like clusters of
OMBRÉ OR COLORED VEILS If you’d like a pop of color without
being too bold, try a delicate veil in a shade of peony, light blue, or lavender. If you want a bit more of a punch, look for a dip-dyed veil with a bright color like yellow or orange for a summer wedding, or deep blue or aqua for a winter wedding. The fade-out from white to a bold hue will show some serious spunk. CAPES Bridal capes have made their debut over the past couple of seasons, adding the drama of a veil while keeping the face and hair free from coverage. Capes can range from a simple layer of tulle to more luxurious pieces dripping with embellishments. Plus, they can be detachable just like a veil! STATEMENT HEADPIECES These vary from crowns made of crystals, flowers, gems, ribbons, or a large bow. If you have a simpler gown,

SPARKLING ACCENTS If you love sparkles, keep the bling going! Take your sparkle to the next level with a glitzy headband with extra gems, or a scattering of sparkling hair clips throughout your updo. The sparkles will draw the attention upward to your face and hair. Who doesn’t want to shine on their wedding day? AU NATUREL Add a sprig of flowers to your updo or weave some fresh rosemary or lavender into your locks for a delicate scent. Winter brides could consider hairpieces made from natural objects like small pinecones or pine branches pinned into a side swept hairdo.

this is a great opportunity to go bold and wow your partner and your guests with something unexpected.
UNDERSTATED AND SIMPLE‌ OR NONE AT ALL A veil may not be your style, and that is ok! If you want something in your hair but want to keep it extra-simple, select a few metallic hair pins or add some white ribbons that’ll flutter as you walk down the aisle. Whatever you choose to top off your wedding look, make sure it is reflective of your style and makes you feel GREAT!

showcases Belle Skinner’s distinctive style. From leather wall coverings to intricate floor tile patterns to carved marble fireplaces and woodwork, the historic mansion is filled with luxurious and eye-catching custom details. The Italianate Music Room designed by Belle in the early 20th century was built to house her renowned collection of musical instruments. With vaulted ceilings, parquet floors, and whimsical musical-themed details in the plasterwork, the space is a surprising and special addition to the rest of the historic property. Another defining feature of the property is the wisteria vines that grow up the sides of the mansion, after which the house was named. The vines, which are still the originals planted in the late 1800s by matriarch Sarah Skinner, stretch two stories up the building’s exterior and burst into bloom every spring with fragrant purple and white flowers. “Many people still come year after year when the flowers are at their full glory,” says Sara, “and many couples hope to be the lucky ones who book their wedding or photo sessions here at just the right time to have the gorgeous blooms be the backdrop to their special day.” As an active cultural site and history center, Wistariahurst only hosts a small amount of weddings each year “This allows our team to get to know each and every couple who choose to get married here,” concludes Sara. “The couple will work closely with our event staff to make sure that their day lives up to their dreams. Despite its historic origins, our site is welcoming and comfortable, and we invite families and guests to make themselves at home.” For more information, you can contact Sara English at (413) 322-5660.

s l i a t e d g Weddin YOU CAN EASILY SKIP
By Allison Litera
SPECIAL TO THE REPUBLICAN
Tight on cash or don’t want to stress about big things or tiny details? Here are some things you could consider cutting from your wedding:
AN ENGAGEMENT PARTY
There are so many ways to celebrate your engagement, from a small gathering or dinner with your family and closest friends to a huge bash with everyone you intend to invite to the big day. If you want to forgo a party, remember that news always travels fast via social media or a quick phone call!
BRIDAL PARTY
There are obviously pros and cons to
20
having a group of your closest friends and family as a big part of your day. If you’re freaked out about the thought of a bridal party, save time, money, and extra stress you know you might not be able to handle and fly solo on your big day. Or just stick to your sibling(s) or single closest friend.
PAPER RSVP CARDS
ELABORATE INVITES
Bachelorette and bachelor parties have hit an all-time boom with extravagant insta-worthy weekends to destinations like Nashville, Las Vegas, and Disney World. If corralling 5-25 of your closet friends stresses you out, just do a day trip or stay overnight! With plenty of fun activities around Western Mass, you’re sure to find something that
Odds are most of your wedding guests will throw these away as soon as the wedding is over (unless they are super sentimental…hi Mom). Consider options like all-in-one invitations from Minted.com where attendees can simply detach the bottom part of the invitation and send it back!
If you’re more tech-saavy or want to help save the planet and paper (and maybe even postage), ask guests to RSVP right on your wedding website, if you have one.
AN ENTIRE BACHELOR/ BACHELORETTE WEEKEND
fits your style. Have a girls’ night out to The Big E or rent a party bus and spend the day hopping to local wineries or breweries. Remember that it all comes down to spending some quality time with your besties, not who posts the best photos on social media!
A HAIR/MAKEUP ARTIST
If you’re more of a no-frills natural bride, consider doing your own hair and/or makeup for the big day. Check out YouTube tutorials to glam up your everyday look and practice at least a couple times before the big day.
WELCOME BAGS
When people travel, they will bring the necessities they need. Save yourself the hassle and don’t worry about welcome bags. If it matters to you, select a local hotel that has complimentary snacks and beverages for your guests when you reserve your hotel block.
FAVORS
People are there for you and your significant other. They might not care for another monogrammed jar of candy or miniature wine glass to put away in their kitchen shelves.
a buffet or stations instead. This pricesaving option will actually help move people around the room and reduce wait times if placed strategically.
A SIGNATURE COCKTAIL
You Dream It... We Create It
People will drink what they want to drink. Don’t stress over the extra effort/ signage. There’s a big chance a lot of people won’t know you have one unless you tell them beforehand.
EXTRA GOODIES IN THE BATHROOMS
Some couples like to leave baskets of mints, tampons, bobby pins and other small necessities in the bathrooms at the reception venue. Don’t stress about this. Some venues will even do it for you. Ask them if this is something they offer already.
A FAR-AWAY HONEYMOON
Relaxation doesn’t mean you have to go halfway across the globe! You can still get away from it all in the U.S. The Florida Keys are a fantastic option and the closest to the Caribbean that you can get on U.S. soil. Napa Valley in California is a romantic and doable escape, too.
Best Diamonds... Best Quality Best Craftsmanship One of the Largest Selection of Wedding Bands in the area.

A FANCY GUESTBOOK
Keep it simple: Use a nice notebook and have guests write their messages there, or create a photo book of engagement photos and have people sign it with sharpies. Especially if you just want to stick it on a shelf later on.
A HOTEL ROOM THE NIGHT OF
If you want to save some extra cash, just head home after the festivities. It’ll feel great to hit the pillows in your own bed as a newly wedded couple, too.
TONS OF FLOWERS, PARTICULARLY LARGE BOUQUETS.
Even if it’s a small spray of greens that you hold, or nothing at all, it’s ok! Opt for centerpieces with greenery and candles instead of flowers.
DÉCOR
Let your ceremony and reception spaces speak for themselves, especially if you’re getting married outdoors or in an ornate indoor space. If you’re into a more casual dinner, do

Symbolically, the bread signified that the couple would never go hungry, the salt warned them to cope with life’s difficulties, and the shots – one filled with vodka, another with water – are offered first to the bride, who must make her selection without knowing which is which. The selection of vodka determines who will rule the household. The glasses were then tossed and broken for good luck. The bride received the vodka!! THEME: Modern Rustic
