12 songs from past 6 decades that speak to the season

n some way, this year may be a “cruel summer” by comparison with others, and the song by that title may be playing in a lot of corners. But with the season now upon us, we thought we’d take a look at some other summer songs that speak to the season in various ways. Since there are scores and scores of them, we pared the list down to a dozen: two each from each of the past six decades.
Now, some decades have a bigger swath of great summer songs than others, but these are rules we decided on. So let’s kick things off with two classics from more than 50 years ago. The 1960s had a surfeit of summer songs to choose from. But these two captured two diverse senses of the season. “Summer in the City”: This urgent anthem to the grime and shine that only a city can squeeze out of summer was a slightly different mode than the Lovin’ Spoonful’s usual cheery sound. “Hot Fun in the Summertime”: A soulful, loping tune about the simmering joy that summer brings to everyday life. One of Sly and the Family Stone’s best. Likewise, the ’70s had plenty to choose from and these two sum up summer pretty well: “School’s Out”: A hardrock ode by Alice Cooper that hails the freedom that summer brings to students of all ages, even though that feeling is probably muted this year due to the shutdown. “Ridin’ in my Car”: A poignant and wistful remembrance of lost love from a summer past by NRBQ. Breezy and danceable yet still heartfelt. With songs like the aforementioned “Cruel Summer” by Bananarama and Bryan Adams’ “Summer of ’69,” the
Tom Petty, above, offers a different look at how summer may affect a person in “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.” At left, Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” is just as catchy as the Bananarama ’80s hit with the same name. (RICK DIAMOND / GETTY IMAGES FOR SACKS & CO; RICH FURY / GETTY IMAGES FOR IHEARTMEDIA)
’80s had its share of catchy tunes for riding with the top down. Here are two of the best: “Boys of Summer”: The riff alone sounds like a summer evening drive out on a stretch of abandoned highway. You were probably sick of hearing this Don Henley hit not long after it was released, but it remains a poetic classic paean to the warm-weather season. “Suddenly Last Summer”: A sensual and sweltering vocal by lead singer Martha Davis haunts this cinematic
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince rap about summer’s ability to let you chill in their ’90s hit “Summertime.” At left, Alice Cooper’s ’70s hard-rock ode “School’s Out” hails the freedom that summer brings to students. song about loss of innocence and the end of summer. The song has the same name as a Tennessee Williams play, but is otherwise unconnected to the work. The ’90s were not especially chock full of summer songs, but these two represented the range of the decade:
“Summertime”: DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince rap and wax rhapsodically about summer’s ability to let you chill and just enjoy the world around you. “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”: This Tom Petty classic isn’t specifically about summer, but the protagonist feels a
certain dread as summer is “creepin’ in.” A different look at how the season may affect a person. The 2000s has a lot of hits during summer, but not a wide range about the season. These two capture the season well:

Bon Jovi compares love to a summer’s day in “Summertime.” (SIMONE JOYNER / GETTY IMAGES)
“Summer Love”: Justin Timberlake implores the object of his affection that their relationship can’t just be a summer fling, doing so against a solid groove and catchy riffs. “Summertime”: Referencing summer totems like beach blankets, wine bottles and warm breezes, Bon Jovi compares love to a summer’s day, although a little less poetically than Shakespeare. Like the 1990s, the 2010s lacked a lot of summery
songs, but here are two that many readers will know and sing along with: “Beat This Summer”: This is not country Brad Paisley; this is pure-pop Brad Paisley, as he bemoans a summer love slipping away with an infectious melody. “Cruel Summer”: This tune is not a remake of the Bananarama song, but rather a Taylor Swift tune that is equally as catchy. But unlike the ’80s hit, T-Swizzle doesn’t feel the summer is cruel due to loss of love, but rather the actual presence of the problematic paramour in the Country music singer Brad Paisley delivers an infectious pop lyrics. melody with “Beat This Summer.” (PETER KRAMER / GETTY IMAGES)

As things start to open up slowly, people are enjoying a few things they’ve gone without for a few months, mainly dining out. Fans of live music are still left wanting and may remain that way for the foreseeable future. However, there is one local venue where you can catch a variety of music seven nights a week — mainly because the shows are held outdoors: UNO Pizzeria & Grill in downtown Springfield, which once again is offering its Summer Courtyard Series. I always thought that being a teenage bull shark would be amusing. What’s not to like about getting into life-ordeath fights with alligators or terrorizing upwardly-mobile sun worshipers whose life choices negatively impact a marine ecosystem? But as someone who isn’t getting any younger, I was pleased to find out that an elder bull shark is liable to have a lot more fun – picking on tougher fauna, making quick work of shark hunters and surviving out of water for a longer period of time – making it that much easier to take a bite out of the leisure class. “Maneater” is a moderately funny, environmentally conscious, open-world shark game that puts players in control of a female bull shark whose task is to grow larger and more powerful by consuming as much as possible. Structured around a series of episodes, the game imitates the form of a wildlife TV show complete with a snarky unseen narrator and a couple of recurring characters, Scaly Pete and his son Kyle LeBlanc, who serve as the shark’s human antagonists. Scaly Pete, a sort of low-rent Ahab, is a Cajun fisherman who develops a special enmity toward the female bull shark. She had, after all, bitten off his lower arm after being caught (he threw her back into the water for being a small fry). Pete is an old salt through and through whose rough-andtumble personality clashes with his son’s more reserved nature. A fateful run-in with the shark when she is older only increases his bitterness. “Maneater’s” narrative plays off the types of personality clashes and individual obses-

Northampton this month due to COVID-19. The Irish rock band scrapped its two-night stand at the Iron Horse Music Hall. The dates, June 24 and 25, will be rescheduled and tickets will be honored for the new shows. The entire June calendar has now been scrubbed as the venue looks to late July for the chance to host a concert. Gaelic Storm formed at O’Brien’s Pub in Santa Monica and turned a brief appearance in the movie “Titanic” (they performed as the steerage band) into a stellar 20-plus year career. The New Jersey rock band’s 2006 release “The Black Parade” was certified double-platinum. My Chemical Romance split as a group in 2013, and reunited for an L.A. concert in late 2019.

Fans of sculptor Ursula von Rydingsvard’s powerful exhibition last year at the National Museum of Women in the Arts will not want to miss “Ursula von Rydingsvard: Into Her Own,” a thoughtful and visually arresting overview of the life, career and creative process of the 77-year-old artist, who is best known for monumental natural forms, in rough-hewed cedar. The film by Daniel Traub uses the standard documentary interviews with the artist, along with family members, art world peers, curators and collectors to shed light on what Washington Post critic Sebastian Smee called Von Rydingsvard’s “violent and yielding, fiercely willed and oddly relaxed” work. But the film is at its eloquent, if wordless best when it simply shows us the making, from start to finish, of some of her haunting forms. Unrated. Available at nga.gov. A quiet but passionate love story tops the new DVD releases for this week. “Portrait of a Lady on Fire”: A painter, Marianne (Noemie Merlant), travels through choppy waters, commissioned to do a portrait of the mysterious Heloise (Adèle Haenel). Heloise’s mother (Valeria Golino) reveals that Heloise wore out the previous artist by refusing to pose for said portrait. Since the artwork is supposed to be sent to Heloise’s wealthy suitor in Milan, whom she absolutely doesn’t want to marry, it’s her one form of feasible protest. Instead, Marianne must masquerade as a walking partner for Heloise, who’s been kept in her room following her sister’s death. But that’s just one secret in this beautiful, tragic love story. Longing glances and extended silences may as well be supporting characters as the two women fall for each other, while they help a maid, Sophie (Luana Bajrami), with a secret of her own, and dread the clock ticking toward the end of their time together. Director Celine Sciamma’s sparse but pointed script elevate the tension and desire brought on by Merlant’s and Haenel’s magnificent performances, with imagery mirroring a retelling of Orpheus’ inability to not look back at his newly deceased bride, Eurydice, while attempting to rescue her from the underworld. Alas, for these women, the patriarchy of late 18th century France is a hell of its own.

Dining out returns as restrictions ease
HE ROLLOUT OF restaurant reopenings across the country has been greeted with considerable enthusiasm by owners and restaurant patrons alike. Consumer polling done during the various lockdowns and stay-at-home orders has consistently identified “going to restaurants” as one of the activities that people were most eager to resume. Thus, not surprisingly, as states and jurisdictions have permitted the resumption of on-site restaurant operations, the public has shown a marked willingness to dine out once again. COVID-19, however, has not “gone away,” and in order to prevent a resurgence of infections, public health officials have had to impose a considerable number of operational mandates on restaurant owners. These include capacity limits, social distancing, extra sanitation measures, and contact tracing. Anyone familiar with how the industry operates knows that these mandates aren’t going to be easy to comply with, especially given the financial and operational disruption the typical restaurant has experienced over the past three months. Preliminary indications from those areas of the country opened first are that compliance with pandemic “best practices” has been far from universal.
Twenty-five tables are available and parties of up to six can be accommodated. Steaming Tender is also continuing its promotion for takeout customers. Lawsuit gives Iron Duke chance to ‘promote’ itself
A
S A NEW YORK GIants fan, I have a newly found soft spot for Duke University, the college where second-year quarterback Daniel Jones played. Before then, I was iffy on the school, despite its vaunted success in basketball. Some of my family members were big fans, however, and I respected that. And I even gave up some begrudging respect to the oft-vilified Duke hoops star Christian Laettner after seeing ESPN’s “I Hate Christian Laettner” program. But after some recent news concerning the school and a local brewery, I may have swung back to disliking the home of the Blue Devils. According to a MassLive. com story by Nick O’Malley, Iron Duke Brewing in Ludlow has given up trying to defend itself against Duke in a trademark infringement case.

So as (the soon-to-be-former) Iron Duke looks for a new name, I have a suggestion. Since duke (and duchess) is the nobility title listed as third in rank after

5 classic white wines under $10 perfect for summer

REAT WINES TASTE GREAT anytime of year. If someone’s opening up a bottle of 20-year-old Bordeaux or Burgundy and it’s the hottest day of the year, count me in! But there’s also a reason why most of us drink more white wine during the summer. Nothing tastes quite as refreshing as a nice, chilled glass of white wine. So to kick off the start of the summer, I thought I would write about five classic white wines under $10 that are perfect for hot afternoons and warm summer nights. The five wines I picked represent some of the most popular white wine grapes. Or in the case of one wine, a particular wine that can only come from one region in the world. Chardonnay. soft spot for sauvignon blancs from New Zealand’s Marlborough region, which is why I picked the following wine. 2019 Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc Region: Marlborough, New Zealand Tasting notes: When it comes to sauvignon blanc, New Zealand consistently produces some of the best, refreshing and affordable sauvignon blancs in the world. New Zealand’s Marlborough region on the northern tip of New Zealand’s south island in particular reigns supreme when it comes to crisp, refreshing white wines. This particular popular sauvignon blanc deserves all the attention it gets. In a taste test with the other New Zealand sauvignon blancs that cost less than $10 a bottle, I personally found that this one stood out with its crisp, signature fresh-cut grass flavors that made New Zealand’s Marlborough region famous. There’s also a slight hint of citrus and ripe green apple flavors as well. Absolutely delightful and thoroughly refreshing.
3. Riesling
History: Riesling wines first began being made in Germany in the 1400s. And of all the white wines described this week, riesling wines are probably the most dramatically different from one winemaker to the next. In fact, even the same winemaker might produce very different rieslings. Some can be extremely sweet while others can be bone dry. Location: Germany (particularly the Mosel region) continues to produce outstanding rieslings. But you can also find great ones made in many other parts of the world, including Canada’s Niagara region, France’s Alsace region, several regions in New Zealand and the United States. But I decided to pick a wine from Washington’s Columbia Valley region since I personally think they make some of the best dry, affordable rieslings in the world. 2018 Chateau St. Michelle Dry Riesling Region: Columbia Valley, Washington Tasting notes: I’m going to say right up front that I’m a big fan of dry white wines. So if you prefer your rieslings on the sweeter side, this wonderful, dry wine might not be the one for you. Don’t get me wrong. I love certain sweeter rieslings, especially when it comes to dessert
