The Super Deluxe Edition includes a 120-page hardcover book containing an array of previously unseen photographs along with Prince’s handwritten lyrics for many of his popular hits, such as “U Got The Look,” “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man,” and “Hot Thing.” The book also features liner notes from comedian Dave Chappelle and musician Lenny Kravitz. Donnie Moorhouse Also included in the Super DeLiveWire luxe Edition is a DVD containing a complete and previously unreleased New Year’s Eve benefit concert performed at Paisley Park on Dec. 31, 1987. The evening marked Prince’s final show of the “Sign O’ the Times” tour and his only onstage collaboration with jazz legend Miles Davis. In all, the set includes eight CDs, a DVD, the book, and the first remastered version of the original album. The set will feature 45 previously unreleased studio songs. “Sign O’ the Times,” was Prince’s ninth studio album, and included singles “If I Was Your Girlfriend,” “U Got the Look,” the title track, and “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man.”

Liner notes • While various artists have taken to drive-in movie screens to perform concerts this summer, the Rolling Stones are releasing a concert film to fill the big screen this summer. “The Rolling Stones: Havana Moon,” a concert filmed in Havana, Cuba, in 2016, will be screening across the U.S. and Canada beginning tomorrow. The movie documents the band’s 2016 concert at the Ciudad Deportiva de la Habana sports complex. Several artists have taken to livestreaming concerts on drive-in screens as an answer to COVID-19 restrictions for large gatherings in arenas. Garth Brooks undertook the most ambitious drive-in event by hosting a show that was fed to over 300 drive-in screens across the country. The Stones were forced to postpone the 2020 “No Filter” tour that was scheduled for U.S. stadiums this summer.

Winwood have rescheduled a 2020 summer tour to 2021. New dates have been announced for shows that were originally scheduled for June 30 in the Boston area and July 1 in Saratoga Springs, New York. The new dates are June 30, 2021, at Xfinity Center in Mansfield, and July 1, 2021, at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band was founded in 1972 by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. Two years later, the duo retired from live performing and became a studio-only band. The group has sold over 40 million records and is known for hits like “Deacon Blues,” “Reelin’ In The Years,” and “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.” Fagen and Becker eventually returned to touring together up until Becker’s death in 2017. Winwood has his own place in classic rock history as a member of The Spencer Davis

“Bigger Love” tour comes back around. Legend will play 2021 dates at the Grand Theater at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut, on Aug. 27, the Koussevitzky Music Shed at Tanglewood on Aug. 28, and Boston’s Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion on Aug. 30. Tickets purchased for the original dates will be honored. Legend is a rare EGOT artist, a performer who has won an Emmy (television), Grammy (music), Oscar (film) and Tony (stage.) He joined “The Voice” for Season 16, winning with his mentee Maelyn Jarmon, and is currently a judge on Season 17.

ronistic is going on because soon after Peet wakes up in Wren’s house (he’s still in a coma) he passes a portrait of her and a young boy with enormous smiles on their faces. It is dated 1952, long before the advent of voicemail. To uncover what’s going on with Peet, players will have to explore the village and chat with other kids who generally don’t seem perturbed that most of the adults have gone missing since they went searching for Wren. The children Peet encounters gently tease him for being generally clueless. “Neversong” fuses elements of platforming and adventure games. As Peet roams around the town and its neighboring areas he has the opportunity to solve puzzles and do favors for the children he comes across. Occasionally, he comes into conflict with adults who take the appearance of large monsters. By defeating them or poking around the town Peet learns notes for different songs that can be played on Wren’s piano. Doing so unlocks different upgrades that are hidden

about the house such as a baseball bat that can be used to clobber Peet’s foes. Neither the puzzles nor the combat in “Neversong” are particularly difficult, making it very approachable. Health is generously distributed throughout so one can blunder through the boss fights without much fuss, and over its relatively short playtime new mechanics, such as a skateboard, are timely introduced. Although I was impressed that the game is largely the product of one person – Thomas Brush, who handled its story, art, and music – I found its ending to be both predictable and a letdown. The strongest aspect of “Neversong” is its atmosphere, which benefits from the actor Dick Terhune’s warm voice-over narration and the cheeky dialogue of the characters. Still, neither of those elements, nor the game’s relatively simple gameplay, help to sustain a sense of dramatic tension over the long haul. No doubt Brush is a talented developer, but “Neversong” strikes me as a minor work. It lacks the punch to make it more than the sum of its parts.

“Neversong” is a low-key game which, at first blush, appears to be about a boy struggling with regret. In fairytale form, it tells the story of Peet, a lonely young orphan whose life is transformed after he falls for a charismatic girl named Wren who teaches him to play the piano. The two children are inseparable until a dreadful day when they venture out to a decommissioned asylum where Wren is kidnapped in front of Peet by a pale-faced man. The incident so traumatizes the boy it sends him into a coma. In the world of Peet’s unconscious, children have taken over his hometown, Redwind Village. The town’s adults are caged, transformed into monsters or running around with sharp objects and homicidal intentions. At the start of the game we see Peet wandering through a series of dimly lit halls. He walks past walls with “Believe” and “The” ominously painted on them and past doors with letters above them that together spell the word “SMILE” and “LIE.” Adding to the mystery, he comes across a ringing, old-fashioned rotary phone on which he answers. He hears a voicemail from Wren. It is clear that Peet is suppressing something. Evidently, something anach-

The milestones are literal and figurative in “John Lewis: Good Trouble,” a timely and necessary documentary that examines the life and career of the civil rights leader and Georgia congressman, who still bears the scars from the fractured skull he incurred at the hands of law enforcement. (Lewis, now 80, was struck by an Alabama state trooper wielding a nightstick during the famous 1965 voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.) Archival footage of that march, in which troopers attacked peaceful protesters, includes, at one point in the 54-mile journey, signage indicating how far demonstrators had left to walk. But in speaking more metaphorically at the start of the film – in which Lewis and others reminisce about their struggle, and how far we’ve come toward equality and justice – Lewis himself notes that, “We’re not quite there yet.” His understatement is all the more painful, given current events, which lend “Good Trouble” (a reference to a phrase that Lewis, who has been arrested multiple times in his life, uses in speeches about the necessity of stirring things up) the urgency of a call to action. It’s a film that,

“Trolls World Tour”: Its theatrical release an early victim of the coronavirus pandemic, Universal offered “Trolls World Tour” as a digital rental in April, which the studio said broke records as its biggest debut for an original digital release. The colorful animated family flick reunites the main characters from the 2016’s “Trolls,” as Queen Poppy (voiced by Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) once again set off to save the kingdom. This time the threat comes from the Queen of the Hard Rock Trolls (Rachel Bloom), who aims to take over all the Troll kingdoms, each of which represent a different musical genre: Pop, Funk, Classical, Techno, Country and Rock. As Poppy and the gang witness the ravaged Symphonyville and later become imprisoned in Lonesome Flats (turns out a bunch of sad country-singing trolls aren’t wooed by the “rad medley” Poppy et al sing to cheer them up), Cooper (Ron Funches) embarks on a quest to find trolls that look like him, and is found to be royalty in the Funk kingdom (unsurprisingly the most fun, out-ofthis-world Troll kingdom). Eventually the threat becomes an existential one. What happens when one tribe wants total domination, destroying all other types of music? Is it better to have separate tribes in separate kingdoms, or does the Troll universe achieve harmony in coexistence? It’s a nice, especially timely message for kids and parents, though a clunky one at times via the script, written by Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger, Maya Forbes, Wallace Wolodarsky and Elizabeth Tippet. We encounter subgenres like K-pop, reggaeton, smooth jazz and yodeling via rogue characters, not quite knowing where they fit in (one character points out that

5 paths to check out for every level of hiker

By Steve Smith

Special to The Republican

here are 1,846 hiking trails in Massachusetts, according to AllTrails, a mobile app popular with hikers. That’s one trail for every 3,737 people in the state. For comparison (and as an incentive to hike), there are 1,156 Dunkin’ Donut franchises in Massachusetts, or one for every 5,900 people in the state. So you say you can’t find a good trail near you? I dough-not think so. There are dirt trails, paved trails, short trails, long trails, sun-dappled trails, shaded trails, steep trails, flat trails, wooded trails, open-meadow trails. There is a trail for every level of hiker. And if you are nervous about the coronavirus, experts say you are far safer outdoors on a trail than you are in the paper goods aisle in your local supermarket. Just bring a mask in case you meet someone on the trail, and maintain social distancing. Here are five trails you might like:

The Quabbin Reservoir was built between 1930 and 1939 to provide drinking water to Boston and 40 other communities in Greater Boston. There are dozens of trails within the Quabbin watershed. Some of the trails are short, such as the Outlook and Hank’s Meadow, less than a half-mile. There are longer, more challenging trails (called gates) such as Gate 50, which leads to a 5.1-mile trail and Gate 11, which leads to a 4.4-mile trail. They are moderate in difficulty. Gate 40 leads to a 3.9-mile, out-and-back trail that will take you to the now ghost town of Dana. You’ll see foundations of a school and church. It’s a wide path with a gentle incline. The elevation is nearly 1,600 feet, and you may have to scramble over some rocks. It is a popular trail so, as always, bring a mask in case you need it. SEE TRAILS, PAGE E8

Reservation The Rock House Reservation Trail is a 2.2-mile trail located within a 196-acre property that was carved out by a glacier that left boulders in odd places. You’ll see the Balancing Rock, and ask yourself, “How did that get there?” The Rock House Reservation was closed during the initial several weeks of the coronavirus stay-athome orders. The Trustees of Reservations ask that visitors wear a mask at all times. It is located on Route 9 in West Brookfield. The centerpiece of the Rock House Reservation is a large rock enclosure once used by Native Americans as a winter camp. It is located near what historians say were two Native American footpaths. The trail also features a cabin built in the 1930s that The Mount Tom State Reservation offers a number of trails, provides scenic views of many with wonderful views of the Pioneer Valley. man-made Carter Pond. once-a-year crops such as russet potatoes for baking and french fries may even last well into 2021. The expectation is that harvests of tree fruits such as apples or peaches will be minimally impacted, although localized COVID-19 flare-ups could lead to labor shortages at picking time. Produce marketing specialists suggest that chefs and managers start preparing now for future supply blips and price run-ups. They’re encouraging operators to develop menu strategies that will allow a restaurant to quickly shift from using “fresh” to frozen or canned alternatives as changing circumstances warrant.

• With this year’s federal “tax day” deadline rescheduled to July 15 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a few dining establishments have decided to mark the occasion with special deals. NYONE WHO HAS visited a supermarket during the past few weeks has probably noticed that the food distribution system seems to have mostly recovered from the problems it experienced back in March and April. However, experts in restaurant logistics are encouraging those in the food service industry to be prepared for more disruptions down the road, especially given the COVID-19 outbreaks now being experienced in parts of the South and Midwest. While the production of beef and pork had returned to near-normal levels in June, there are still some gaps in meat-product inventories. The skilled labor necessary to make specialty items like sausage, bacon, and ham remains in short supply, so the manufacture of restaurant industry staples like pepperoni is at the moment proving barely sufficient to meet demand. Chicken, however, is currently plentiful. Export markets remain weak and adequate reserves of poultry products are being held in cold storage. Produce supplies may also be erratic in the months ahead, depending on the particular crop and the circumstances under which it’s grown. The overall cratering of demand back in March as ]stayat-home orders led to farm operators cutting back on their planned spring plantings. As the market has since partially rebounded, produce industry specialists are warning that spot shortages of fresh vegetables may now occur as the growing season progresses. Regionalized flare-ups of COVID-19 could have an impact on produce supplies, especially in late fall and winter, when much of the fresh produce in the U.S. originates in California, Arizona, Florida, and Mexico. As a result of reduced plantings, supply shortages of some

Some midyear brew news

ELL, WE’RE AT the midpoint of the year — and what a year it’s been— so I thought I’d take a look from a few angles at where we are with craft beer. First up is a peek at craft beer sales and how the numbers may be skewed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While it’s too early to assess the entire picture, data seems to indicate that people are still buying a decent amount of craft beer. However, although people may be buying it, they are obviously doing so at stores, not in bars and restaurants, which have been largely closed since March. I’m not an economist, nor am I an expert on beer cost markups at various levels, but there has to be some sort of lost revenue here (beyond the general suppression caused by the pandemic in general), since selling draft beer at a venue costs less than canning or bottling it for selling in stores. Some of this “live” beer selling will return as venues start to open up, but I have a feeling that bars (not in eateries) will not be able to safely reopen for a while, and not even all restaurants will be able to do so. I will not get into the politics of what should be open and when, but there is no denying that the coronavirus is still very much with us and any sort of vaccine is still a long way off. (It takes at least a year for trials, etc.) So right now, these reopening schemes are based on best guesses by various public officials. And if we’re being honest, not all of this guesswork has gone particularly well in some states. Breweries that have taprooms, but which don’t serve food, are at particular risk, since they can only sell

These places are on a tight enough margin to start with, and I fear for their survival. But if their retail sales numbers are strong enough, here’s hoping we can all make it through to the other side. Next up is some good news for airline travelers. Delta Air Lines has restored wine and beer service for most of its domestic flights. The move comes three months after Delta eliminated alcohol from flights as the coronavirus surged. Flight attendants will now deliver your beer via serving trays, which eliminate points of contact between themselves and customers. Beer is different and easier than mixed drinks, which involve mixing and stirring and often adding fruit or other ingredients by hand.

• IHOP restaurants have added five new options to their summer-season breakfast food repertoire. The choices include a Classic BreakFEAST Sampler that incorporates three breakfast meats, eggs, hash browns, and two buttermilk pancakes as well as a Crepes & Cakes BreakFEAST variation that’s further enhanced by two crepes topped with glazed strawberries and vanilla cream drizzle. A Kickin’ Maple Chicken BreakFEAST adds a buttermilk-battered fried chicken breast and drizzles the chicken with a maple-flavored, sweet and spicy syrup. IHOP kitchens are also preparing Creme Brulee Pancakes — buttermilk pancakes that are served topped with a vanilla custard and caramelized sugar crystals. For those who like it hot, a Green Chile Omelette is available. Stuffed with marinated pulled pork, jack and cheddar cheeses, and roasted pepper, the omelette is finished with green chile sauce and served with a stack of buttermilk pancakes. There are IHOP locations on Riverdale Street in West Springfield and at the Five Town Plaza in Sixteen Acres.

Few venues, however, are as well suited to outside dining as is the Boathouse in South Hadley. Although I am leery of any travel that confines me with others in a contained area, if I had to board a plane, I’d be happy to have a beer or two available to calm my nerves — and not just about flying itself. Last but not least, a nice story out of Chicago: Laurin Mack, the greatgreat-great-granddaughter of 19th-century brewer Conrad Seipp, decided she wanted to taste her ancestor’s beer and did just that, even though the Conrad Seipp Brewing Co. has been out of business since Prohibition. Mack collaborated with Metropolitan Brewing Co.’s Tracy and Doug Hurst to bring back the old-style German pilsner. Seipp Brewing was at one point the largest brewer in the country, according to a story on wttw.com. The story also quotes Doug Hurst, who pieced together the recipe, as saying that the beer back then, compared to larger brands today, was “a little bit different. It was stronger in flavor, it had more hops, but it still used corn or rice like they use today.” So if you’re going to be near Chicago and want to sample a truly old-school brew, you can find where to get it at the brewery’s website.
