embers of St. Mark Armenian Church in Springfield will continue their more than 25-year-old tradition of serving traditional Armenian dinners and baked goods, but this year the food will be served in drive-thru style rather than at an in-person festival.

The new Fest-To-Go Drive Thru will allow customers to bring home the same meals and baked goods always offered at the parish’s annual Armenian Festival, but they will procure them from the safety of their cars. The COVID-19 pandemic is responsible for the change, but church members did not want to cancel their largest fundraiser, so they decided to shift to the drive-thru model. Among the reasons for the change rather than cancellation were the financial component and tradition. “Rather than cancel our festival, we decided that we can hold our fest in a way that is safe for everyone,” said David Jermakian, a St. Mark parishioner and Fest-To-Go organizer/volunteer. “We put on a great event and feel that the community looks forward to it each year, and during these difficult times we hope our food will bring some joy to the community.”

The drive-thru will take place on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., at the church, 2427 Wilbraham Road, Springfield. Dinners — served with rice pilaf, pita bread and tomato/ cucumber salad — feature chicken kebabs and losh kebabs (Armenian beef/lamb burger). Baked goods will include cheese boreg (ready-to-bake filo dough triangles with cheese filling), choreg (traditional, slightly sweet bread with sprinkled sesame seeds on top), paklava (sweetened layers of filo dough with walnut filling), khadayif (sweetened, shredded filo dough with custard filling — also available by the pound for pre-orders), nazook (rolled pastry with sweet buttery filling), khurabia (tender butter cookies rolled in powdered sugar), katah (slightly sweet bread with sweet buttery filling) and Armenian string SEE FEST, PAGE E3

cheese (mild, moist braided cheese, smooth with a nutty accent). “We’re fortunate to have great chefs in our parish who have their specialties that they prepare for the fest every year, either in their homes or through baking workshops, Jermakian said. Though baking workshops are not as feasible this year, baked goods still will be prepared in parishioners’ homes. The dinners will be prepared by shifts of parishioners at the church while following social distancing and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. One dollar from each dinner purchased will be donated to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. “During this unprecedented time of COVID-19, we know that many people in our community are experiencing food insecurity, and the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts is helping people in need throughout our region and the need continues to rise, Jermakian said. “We want to do our part to support an organization that is on the front lines helping individuals and families. In addition to donations to the Food Bank, proceeds from the Fest-To-Go will benefit the ministries of St. Mark Armenian Church. The church went months with no in-person services, from mid-March through July 26, which has been difficult both spiritually and financially for members. “Not being able to be together with our church family was very hard, he said, but the church streamed Sunday services on Facebook Live each week, and the pastor provided weekly spiritual talks via Zoom, which kept church members connected. Following CDC guidelines, St. Mark’s now offers in-person services. An online ordering system for the Fest-To-Go can be found on the church’s website, stmarkarmenian church.org/2020-aftg-

ATTHEW SZLACHetka, who works professionally utilizing only his surname, Szlachetka, has once again been feted in Rolling Stone. Once pegged as one of the magazine’s “Top New Country Artists You Need the Know,” the Longmeadow native was recently highlighted for his new song “Earthquake,” which was named as a “Pick of the Week” in the country genre. “I feel really fortunate that they have taken an interest in my music,” said Szlachetka. “I’ve read Rolling Stone my entire life and to have them come on board as a champion of my music is an amazing feeling, I’m truly grateful. They have really helped open up some doors for me.” Szlachetka’s musical journey started in Western Mass., included a stay in L.A. with his band The Northstar Session, and landed in Nashville in 2017. Like everyone, he has had to adjust his approach to his work and career due to COVID-19. “I’m hanging in there and trying to roll with the punches the best that I can,” he said. “I think the biggest thing right now is trying to figure out what my next major pivot will be. I had to completely rethink my album release strategy.” Szlachetka’s new album “Young Heart, Old Soul” was produced by Grammy winning producer Scott Underwood (drummer/ founding member of Train) and was scheduled for a July 31 release. “When things started looking like COVID was going to last more than 2 months, I decided to pull the album release and leak it out as a collection of singles,” he said. “Since May, I have released a single every month, or month and a half. I think it’s actually working out better in terms of getting more attention for each song.” The artist has been promoting the songs with a weekly Facebook Live concert every Sunday at 7 p.m. (CST). The music is just one of the projects under development for Szlachetka.

MOVIES DVD RELEASES

‘Irresistible’ too snarky for satire Steve Carell stars as Gary Zimmer in “Irresistible.”

By Katie Foran-McHale

Tribune News Service

A Jon Stewart feature misses the mark in new DVD releases for this week. “Irresistible”: After the devastating loss of the 2016 presidential election, Democratic consultant Gary Zimmer (Steve Carell) aims to bounce back by latching onto a small-town Wisconsin man, Jack Hastings (Chris Cooper). Caught on camera giving an eloquent speech about overcoming differences, Hastings goes viral, and, presuming the town to be Trump country, Zimmer thinks it’s just what the party needs to recalibrate and encourages Hastings to run for mayor. As the race attracts national interest, Republican consultant Faith Brewster (Rose Byrne) rolls into town to support the incumbent (Brent Sexton). Written and directed by Stewart, the film is far too snarky to be considered satire. While Wisconsin may be a target on late-night shows for certain Midwest stereotypes — this writer grew up near Milwaukee, and yes, the state sure does have nice folks and great beer and cheese — the premise just misses the mark. Gary constantly belittles Hastings and his campaign for assuming small-town conservatism without anyone demonstrating it; then when the town pulls one over on him, it’s played as a big reveal, that we should be surprised these people had the know-how to do so. With the film not shot in Wisconsin and not featuring one single hearty Wisconsin accent, Gary’s disregard for the Midwest is a fair analogy for how the film treats the region, too. Throw in the odd coupling of Gary and Hastings’ daughter, Diana (the always great Mackenzie Davis), as well as the odder relationship between Gary and Faith, and this is a tale that is absolutely resistible.

15 shows you should watch this fall

By Los Angeles Times Staff

Los Angeles Times

n mid-May, just two months or so into the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, we launched our summer TV preview with more than a little concern that we might, at some point in the not-toodistant future, run out of television. Now, as we turn our attention to fall – boy, time flies in a crisis – it increasingly seems as though those fears were misplaced. With film and TV production (haltingly) starting to resume, under health and safety measures designed to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, we’re still a long way off from the fire hydrant of content we’ve become used to in the years of “peak TV.” But a combination of quarantine productions, foreign imports and unscripted and animated series, along with the streamers’ and cable networks’ long production pipeline, means that there’s plenty in the hopper to hold you over as the days get shorter and the weather cools off. Intrepid viewers all, the TV team at the Los Angeles Times decided to use our fall TV preview to help you narrow things down. Here are the 15 TV shows we’ll be watching this fall – and that you should be watching too. “Transplant” In a time when headlines are dominated by COVID-19 death counts, essential worker exhaustion and critical shortages of personal protective equipment, you may not have the capacity for yet another hospital drama. But “Transplant” puts a twist on the venerable TV genre, starring Hamza Haq as a doctor who fled war-torn Syria and is working to rebuild his career in emergency medicine in a new country. Earlier this year, the 13-episode season became the most-watched Canadian original series and earned critical praise for tackling topics such as the refugee crisis and problematic power structures in the medical field. Even my boyfriend – a nurse who has been treating COVID-19 patients for the past six months, and usually doesn’t watch any hospital-set shows – wants to check this one out. featuring an all-star cast, will be revisited in a new series from National Geographic. The eight-episode project will air on Disney+ and launch with a two-episode debut Oct. 9. Unlike the film, the cast of astronauts here is composed of relative unknowns: Patrick J. Adams (“Suits”) plays Major John Glenn, while Jake McDorman (“Limitless”) plays Commander Alan Shepard. Leonardo DiCaprio joins showrunner Mark Lafferty (“Castle Rock”) and others as an executive producer on the series. (Disney+, Oct. 9) – Greg Braxton “Roadkill” Back when Hugh Laurie (“House”) was avoiding engagement to Honoria Glossop and doing disastrous favors for Gussie Fink-Nottle opposite Stephen Fry in “Jeeves & Wooster,” one would not have predicted for him a future playing antiheroes and villains. In this story of post-shame politics from playwright and screenwriter David Hare (“Collateral”), Laurie, as far as I can make out from the press release, plays a compromised conservative British politician coming under public scrutiny and not caring a jot. It probably has to do with Boris Johnson, but no one is going to stop you from bringing that metaphor closer to home. With Helen “Narcissa Malfoy” McCrory as the prime minister. (PBS, Nov. 1)

– Robert Lloyd “The Crown” The last time we caught up with the Windsors – 1,000 years ago, in 2019 – Prince Charles was falling hard for Camilla and Queen Elizabeth was grappling with middle age. When “The Crown” returns for its fourth season on Nov. 15, the lavish drama will dive headlong into the scandal-plagued Diana years. Based on the recent teaser trailer, the series has evidently spared no expense in re-creating the Princess of Wales’ ginormous wedding dress (or her iconic feathered bob). “The Crown” has thrived when dramatizing less familiar moments in the lives of the royals; it will be fascinating to see how creator Peter Morgan navigates this more recent, exhaustively chronicled chapter of British history. (Netflix, Nov. 15) –Meredith Blake “Emily in Paris” With the number of times I’ve written about “Younger,” it’s no secret that I’m a champion of the glossy romantic comedy. So of course I’ve been counting down to the debut of “Emily in Paris,” the latest series from Darren Star (“Sex and the City,” “Younger”) and his frequent collaborator, costume designer Patricia Field (also of “Ugly Betty” and “The Devil Wears Prada”). The underrated Lily Collins, also a series produc-

Reilly play wouldbe astronauts living in a lunar simulator in the Arizona desert and hoping to qualify to go to the moon. Fourth cocreator Jonathan Krisel (“Portlandia,” “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”) directs. A pre-COVID production, but isolation is conveniently a theme we’re living through. (Showtime, TBA) – Robert Lloyd “Selena: The Series” After nearly two years of waiting – and waiting! – Netflix’s series about Selena Quintanilla will finally make its debut this fall. Billed as a coming-of-age story, the series stars “The Walking Dead’s” Christian Serratos as the late Mexican American singer and will chronicle her rise to becoming the queen of Tejano music. Cringeworthy beer names

’VE WRITTEN ABOUT beer names several times before, covering everything from great brew names to trademark lawsuits over names. But today I’m taking a different take on the subject: Bad beer names (and ones that might discourage you from drinking or trying them). Before we begin, allow me to offer this caveat: I’m not in any way saying these beers are bad or unworthy of trying. In fact, I have not had most of them so I can’t give an opinion. I’m guessing most if not all of them are good. This column is solely about the names of these beers. And frankly, I don’t really care about a beer’s name as long as it tastes good. But sometimes a name alone will put you off for one reason or another. Some of these beers were one-offs and thankfully some seemed to have been retired. And one last thing: Some of the beer names I found researching this column were so bad that they simply are not suitable to print, so the ones below aren’t even the worst, sadly: Village Idiot Brewing Co.’s Thong Remover Belgian Tripel Ale: The archaic, sexist and adolescent idea of beer (or alcohol) as a way of getting women to remove their clothing should not be a route that craft brewers should embrace. The craft beer community needs to be inclusive, and this sort of thing isn’t exactly inviting to women. Ridgeway Brewing’s Reindeer Droppings: I’m a big fan of the Christmas season, and I like a lot of the holiday beers, but this one doesn’t exactly warm me in the same way that holiday lights and the smell of pine trees do. Klamath Basin Brewing Co.’s Butt Crack Brown: What’s the deal with poopthemed names? Does anyone find them appealing? I know it’s jokey, but we are dealing

Frankly, I don’t really care about a beer’s name as long as it tastes good. But sometimes a name alone will put you off for one reason or another. with something you drink here. Loose Shoe Brewing. Abbie’s Black Eye P.A.:OK, the “Eye P.A.” is a semi-clever turn on IPA, and a black eye isn’t offensive in its own right. But when it’s a woman (Abbie) with a black eye, this strays into the area of domestic abuse. Loose Shoe seems to have been told to do better and it did, as it looks as though it removed the name “Abbie” from the beer. Big Sky Brewing’s Moose Drool: I’ve actually had this one and it’s a fine brown ale, and compared with others on this list, the name is only mildly off-putting. But still: yuck. Duclaw Brewing Co.’s Sweet Baby Jesus: Look, I don’t care what religious beliefs anyone has (or doesn’t have), but since a good segment of society (across the board around the globe) take their spirituality seriously, maybe it’s not a good idea to use a casual phrase with major deity as a beer name. (See also New England Brewing Co.’s Gandhi-Bot IPA which is a fine brew, but … no.)

Prices rise amid pandemic

M

OST RESTAUrant customers, whether as dine-in guests or curbside pickup patrons, have noticed that what they’re paying for their meals is more than before the pandemic began. No one likes menu price inflation. Customers certainly don’t welcome it, and most restaurant owners are skittish about price increases, knowing a proportional decline in customer count most often ensues. But the COVID-19 pandemic and the public health measures it necessitated have imposed financial burdens on restaurant operators in the form of lost business, increased labor costs, and extra expenses. The PPE for required for kitchen and dining room staff can easily run several hundred dollars a month. And then there is the cost of Plexiglas barriers, scanning thermometers, and additional sanitizing supplies, as well as any expenses associated with setting up outside dining spaces. At the same time disruptions elsewhere in the economy have led to increased costs for food and supplies being passed on to restaurants themselves. Since running a food service enterprise is a notoriously low margin proposition, few operators found themselves in a position to “eat” these additional costs. The question then became how to pass those expenses along to customers. Some restaurateurs opted to add COVID-19 surcharges to the bills presented to patrons. These surcharges ranged from a small percentage of the total to a fixed charge of a few dollars, and operators going the surcharge route hoped it would be possible to adjust or even eliminate the charge as costs stabilized or declined. Other owners, often needing to reprint menus in a single use format anyway,

simply adjusted their menu prices upward to reflect their new cost realities. Not surprisingly, neither approach proved particularly popular with customers, but having a “COVID-19” surcharge printed on one’s restaurant check touched a

nerve with many. Social media quickly lit up with complaints about surcharge-enhanced restaurant tabs, and many of the owners and operators imposing such extra charges found themselves quickly backtracking. The psychology, it seems, was against them. No one wanted still another visible reminder — in the form of a dollars-and-cents surcharge — as to how COVID-19 was disrupting their lives. reece. Just saying that word puts a smile on many people’s faces. Images of warm, sandy beaches spring to mind. Cristal clear, blue water and endless skies. It’s the land of lovers and ancient poets and anyone romantic with a beating heart. No wonder my wife and so many other people around the world adore this sundrenched paradise made up of thousands of islands sprinkled throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. But there’s one thing many people outside of Greece often don’t think of when they think of this country – wine. And not just ordinary wine. Really great wine. Then again, it shouldn’t come as a surprise since so many other fruits and vegetables thrive throughout Greece, whether it’s olive or fig trees and some of the freshest vegetables you’ll ever taste in your life. So this week, I decided to focus on several Greek wines, especially since so many of them taste so great on warm, summer afternoons. The six different Greek wines featured this week are each made with a different grape – two reds, two roses, one white and one only-inGreece wine. One of the great things about Greek wines is the wide array of less well-known grapes used to make many of the wines there. Sure, you can find Greek wines made with chardonnay grapes and other familiar names. But why limit yourself when you can discover what wines made with other types of grapes taste like? Let me add that all six of these wines were purchased for $82 at Provisions in

The documentary “Class Action Park” offers an (at first amusing) oral history of Action Park, a notoriously unsafe New Jersey water park that operated from 1978 to 1996 and whose reputation for injury included lacerations, concussions, missing teeth, dislocated joints, a broken back, the loss of a finger – and death. That history lends the film its title – taken from the one of the park’s jokey nicknames (it was also known as Traction Park). Through reminiscences from former park guests (including actors Chris Gethard and Alison Becker), past employees and journalists who covered its many run-ins with courts, a picture emerges of a toxic blend of lax safety standards and thrill-seeking teens. For much of the film, the tone is all weren’t-we-crazy? – until, of course, the film shifts to discussion one of the park’s most grisly deaths.
