Take a hike

5 late summer trails

as anyone ever told you to take a hike? Then listen to naturalist John Muir, an early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States. “Of all the paths you take, make sure a few of them are dirt,” he said.

Summer is fading. The outdoors is still among the safest places you can be. There are nearly 2,000 trails in Massachusetts. So answer nature’s call and take a hike. There is a trail for every skill level. Most are usually well marked. Think of the directional arrows taped to the floors of your supermarket, herding shoppers into aisles to maximize social distancing. It’s something like that. Too many people ignore the arrows in the supermarket. Ignore the markers on the trails at your own peril. Here are five trails to consider:

Above, the Arcadia Loop trail in the Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary in Easthampton is good for all skill levels. At right, Mount Norwottuck is the highest peak in the Holyoke range. The trail to the top and back is 3.4 miles. (STEVE SMITH PHOTOS)

Mount Norwottuck The views are great. It’s the highest peak in the Holyoke Range at 1,106 feet above sea level. You may need to remind yourself that the views are great during your climb through the ledges. There are sections that are strenuous. The rest is rated moderate in difficulty. The 3.4-mile loop combines the Robert Frost Trail (orange markers) and the Metacomet-Monadnock trail (white markers). Start at the Visitors Center on Route 116 in Amherst. Look for the historic Horse Caves, located to the east of the summit. The caves are actually ledges. According to local legend, some men fighting with Daniel Shays in the Shays’ Rebellion hid there after being defeated by the Massachusetts militia. SEE HIKE, PAGE E3

Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary If you’ve ever been told you can’t see the forests for the trees, visit this Mass Audubon site at 127 Combs Road in Easthampton. You will certainly see the forests for the trees, with its diverse terrain of forest, meadows, grasslands and wetlands. There are 4 miles of trails with educational signage and benches along the way. This trail is rated easy in difficulty. This is a birding hot spot. Arcadia and Quabbin Park are tied for the most bird species seen over the years in all of central and Western Massachusetts, according to the Mass Audubon website. More than 200 species have been observed in Arcadia. Look for the spotted turtles, too. And look for the observation tower, where the Audubon staff has marked a post showing how high major floods have reached in Arcadia. You will crane your neck to see the mark showing the level of the 1936 flood. The trails are open, but the buildings and restrooms are closed. It should be noted that Arcadia and its many programs have educated young and old in the Pioneer Valley for decades.

with its natural rock slides. The water is cold, but the experience is very cool for kids. Chapel Brook — a tributary of the South River — flows through a dense hardwood forest before cascading over the ledges that provide the natural slippery slides. It is a playground built by Mother Nature. That sounds better than calling it a geological wonder. This a 4.1 mile, out-and-back trail. The Two Bridges section extends from Chapel Falls to the Bullitt Reservation. And, yes, you will cross two bridges.

Just across the street from Chapel Falls is a steep trail that goes to Pony Mountain. The 100-foot vertical rock face is popular with rock climbers. Local legend says a distraught Native American rode his horse over the edge of the cliff after being jilted by a woman. Most locals take this as horse bleep. Whoa, they say. No horse would do that. something for everyone. The trail begins at the John Woolsey Trail just off the parking lot. That takes visitors along the Connor Pond before it joins the Rutland Brook Loop Trail. A scenic pond and a gurgling brook — all within the first mile of the trail. For a more strenuous hike, visitors can take the moderately steep Ridge Trail. The Sherman Loop Trail will take visitors through a land of boulders. There is also a loop trail called Porcupine Ledge, named for a porcupine den. Visitors give this trail very high ratings. The Mass Audubon has done a great job marking these trails. Blue markers show you in, and yellow markers show you out. The Rutland Wildlife Sanctuary is located off Allen Camp Road in Petersham.

Jamie Kent delivers new single

AMIE KENT CHECKS in from his Nashville home with news of a recording project that has spawned a new single. “Alone” was released recently through digital platforms as a prelude to a new album. The album was recorded with prolific producer / musician Marti Frederiksen, whose list of credits runs from Aerosmith and Ozzy Osbourne, to Sheryl Crow and Faith Hill. The single “Alone” is a brilliant ballad-anthem for the times. It’s Americana / country feel would fit nicely on Springsteen’s “Western Stars” or Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers.” The single, available on jamiekent.com is accompanied by a moving video as well. “It features all fan submitted photos from quarantine, showing silver lining moments of love found during these crazy times,” says Kent. “There’s engagements, weddings, new babies, first steps, sourdough ... a pretty cool reminder of what really matters.” Kent was a star on the

Domino’s Pizza makes push for recycling

D

URING THE CURrent pandemic many restaurants, independents and chains alike, haven’t had the time or inclination to focus on issues of sustainability. Instead, a day-to-day struggle for survival has necessarily become their primary business concern. Domino’s Pizza Inc. has been an exception. This July, the pizza delivery giant created a “Don’t Trash the Box” campaign, an effort to get more pizza box cardboard recycled. Described by company officials as “an opportunity to make a difference when it comes to packaging and recycling,” the campaign was created in partnership with its primary box supplier, Atlanta-based WestRock Company, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of corrugated paperboard and cardboard containers. The objectives of the campaign are twofold — to dispel the belief that pizza boxes can’t be recycled and instead persuade more recycling programs to accept the boxes as a reclaimable part of the trash that would otherwise end up in landfills. WestRock’s part in the process was to first conduct research into whether or not the food residue and fat left

behind in a used pizza container did, in fact, preclude the box from being recycled. With the help of the American Forest & Paper Association, the study concluded that such residue did not create quality problems in finished cardboard made partly from recycled pizza boxes. The second part of the

campaign is educational, with both WestRock and Domino’s working to inform pizza customers that boxes can be recycled. In situations where recycling programs expressly forbid the collection of pizza boxes, Don’t Trash the Box is challenging such recycling practices. Domino’s has also worked with WestRock to increase the

amount of recycled cardboard used in the chain’s own pizza boxes. Domino’s and WestRock both participate in The Recycling Partnership, a nonprofit entity dedicated to the promotion of recycled materials. The Partnership has prepared an information kit for local government and recycling companies that outlines ways recycling programs can be tweaked to take pizza boxes. More information on this effort is available at recycling. dominos.com. DINE & WINE

The perfect wine, food pairing? Sometimes nothing

D (KEN ROSS PHOTO)

In real life, at the right time and the right place, the right wine can be magical all on its own.

URING A RECENT online wine tasting I attended, someone asked several winemakers what food they would serve with one of their wines for their final meal. No pressure there. And there’s something happy to think about. But after suggesting certain food pairings — ranging from duck to lamb to barbecue — another winemaker said something you don’t normally hear when you read about wine and food pairings. One of his favorite pairings with one of his favorite wines? Absolutely nothing. Instead, he said he sometimes enjoys spending several

Caskmates a nice marriage between beer and whiskey

T

HIS WEEKLY COLUMN IS called “Beer Nut” and indeed, beer is my favorite adult beverage. However, I must confess that it often runs neck and neck with whiskey. I appreciate both finer whiskeys as well as standard ones. (I’m not a scotch drinker, although I do enjoy some of them. I’m just not big on the abundance of peat in many single malts.) As readers might guess if they have read this column for any length of time, I’m a big Irish whiskey fan. I’ve had all sorts, from super-cheap to fairly expensive. When you get into the pricier stuff, I’m a big fan of Middleton Green Spot. If you ever get a chance, try it. Of course my go-to is Jameson. I’ve had several types of Jamo, and my favorite is called Jameson Crested. (It used to be called Crested 10, and you can’t get it in this country, but it’s probably Jameson’s best effort.) But why am I going on and on about whiskey in a beer column? Good question. The reason is because Jameson issued some whiskeys a while back that were aged in

ed the whiskey flavor. The series is called Caskmates, and I was able to try the whiskeys that were aged in India pale ale barrels and stout barrels, respectively. The casks came from the Franciscan Well brewery in County Cork, a fine establishment that I’ve visited several times. Technically, the brewery used old Jameson barrels to finish their beers, then sent the casks back to Jameson for reuse in aging George Lenker the whiskey. Beer Nut Let’s go alphabetically and start with the IPA version. To my nose, the IPA cask softened the usual slight The stout version is a whiskey sting that often hits my nose whole different ball with regular Jameson. The floral game, however – as aspect also seemed more prominent, with maybe a hint of grassiness. different as baseball is The flavor follows this trend, and from the ancient Irish the casks definitely softened the sport of hurling (which is initial bite that Jamo often has on first sip. The hoppiness of an IPA my favorite sport on the isn’t really present — or if it is, it’s planet, by the way). hidden by a soft, slight spiciness. By the time you breathe it in, the finish beer barrels, and I finally got around is classic Jameson and the IPA aspect sampling them. So I thought it would is no longer a factor. I’d recommend be fun to share my impressions about this to those who find standard Jamo how the beer barrels/casks affecta bit harsh.

The stout version is a whole different ballgame, however — as different as baseball is from the ancient Irish sport of hurling (which is my favorite sport on the planet, by the way). Unlike the IPA version, the initial bite that Jameson often chomps you with is still present. But the overall nose and taste seem more complex than either standard Jamo or the IPA version. There is an element of cocoa, which is to be expected with a stout, but also a hint of woodiness. It’s a bit sweeter and fruitier, but the vanilla character of a normal Jameson seems dialed back, maybe due to the dark malts of the stout cutting the vanilla prominence. It finishes nicely with the chocolate aspect lingering a bit, and doing a little Irish step dance with the whiskey malts. It’s not the same as sipping a Guinness (or a Franciscan Well Shandon Stout) with a Jamo, but it’s a nice alternative if you’re short on time. So, although I enjoyed both of them just fine, I’m more of a traditionalist and will probably stick to buying regular Jameson along with any beer I want to drink alongside it.
