hroughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Derek J. Heidemann, coordinator of historic trades at Old Sturbridge Village, has seen people turning more and more to crafts as a means of coping with the uncertainty around them.
“I think that for many people, the pandemic has encouraged them to dive into the world of craft and develop a new appetite for creating things with their hands,” he said. So the upcoming Craft Weekend event will celebrate the talented staff at Old Sturbridge Village and give them a platform to showcase their abilities. “It also serves as a means to bring together our community around crafts that they are passionate about,” Heidemann said. A new addition to this year’s event is the “Exhibition of Craft,” which invites visitors and museum staff to
enter examples of items that they have made this year in an unjudged exhibition. Old Sturbridge Village will host its annual Craft Weekend Saturday and Sunday, showcasing the major industries and crafts of the early 19th century and their relevance and impact on life today. Planned demonstrations in a variety of subjects have been adapted for viewing outdoors and feature a full schedule of events, including tailoring, quilting, bonnet making, wool dyeing and knitting, book binding, making tin coffee pots, making ladies walking shoes, basket making, straw braiding, and timber framing conOld Sturbridge Village potters will fire struction. up the 15,000-brick kiln outside the Village potters will fire up the SEE VILLAGE, PAGE E4 pottery shop. Bruce Springsteen to release new album next month
R
UMORS THAT have circulated for weeks regarding a new Bruce Springsteen album release were authenticated last week with an announcement on the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s website. “Letter to You,” a 12-track studio album recorded with the E Street Band, is set for release on Oct. 23. The title track and lead single is available now through brucespringsteen.net and streaming on YouTube. Longtime Springsteen fans will recognize several song titles, such as “If I Were a Priest” and “Janey Needs a Shooter,” which go back decades, but have been rebirthed here with the E Street Band. “I love the emotional nature of ‘Letter To You,’” said Springsteen in a released

15,000-brick kiln outside the pottery shop. The 24-foot-tall structure heats up to more than 1,900 degrees Fahrenheit and can fit up to 800 pieces stacked 10-feet high within its walls. “While our artisans on staff at the museum are regularly demonstrating their crafts throughout the year, Craft Weekend is a chance for them to take on particularly difficult projects that give them the opportunity to both challenge themselves and highlight their experience and skill,” Heidemann said. The craft program at the museum is popular with visitors, and this weekend gives them the opportunity to immerse themselves in activities that often only happen once a year. For example, Craft Weekend is the only time that museum staff fires the wood-fired pottery kiln each year.

This year there will be an evening component to the program that will allow visitors to view the kiln firing and other craft demonstrations after hours. For many visitors, a highlight of their experience when visiting the museum is not only viewing craft demonstrations, but being able to purchase objects made by the artisans. “Not only are these objects special in that they are handmade, but they remind people of their own experience visiting Old Sturbridge Village and hopefully encourage them to become involved in a craft themselves,” Heidemann said. ‘Devil All the Time’ journeys into humanity’s darkness

t’s the sonorous narration that grabs you at first, a voice lush and resonant with time and place, warm, yet almost ominous, recounting a tale set in Knockemstiff, Ohio, and Coal Creek, West Virginia, back in 1957. This is the voice of author Donald Ray Pollock, of Knockemstiff, who worked at the local paper mill until age 50, when he decided to enroll at Ohio University to earn a degree in English. He sold his first short story collection, “Knockemstiff,” in 2008, before his debut novel, “The Devil All the Time,” came along in 2011. This is his yarn, and he recounts the bone-chilling events within it beautifully.

Pollock’s voice is the guiding light through the film adaptation, directed and co-written by Antonio Campos, and his authorial voice is the discovery that’ll knock ya stiff. “The Devil All the Time” is a gooey slice of Appalachian noir, and Pollock tears the lid right off the pie that is 1950s small-town Americana: cute waitresses, church picnics and crooner tunes (and white, heteronormative, patriotic, pious). Underneath the golden exterior, he exposes a lurid world of murder and mayhem. Sticky red pie filling sure does look a lot like blood, after all. The world Pollock reveals is ruled by lust, death, violence, war and religious fervor. From this soil is borne Arvin Russell (Michael Banks Repeta, then Tom Holland), son of Willard (Bill Skarsgard) and Charlotte (Haley Bennett), grandson of Emma (Kristin Griffith), stepbrother of sorts to Lenora (Eliza Scanlen). Survey finds customers happy with restaurants, but cautious about dining out
B
ESET BY SIX months of shutdowns, supply disruptions, and mandated capacity constraints, the restaurant industry continues its struggle to understand what the future might hold for it. On the macro level, August showed overall gains in restaurant sales, producing some of the best numbers since the pandemic shutdowns began in March. The pace at which sales improved, however, has slowed, in turn suggesting that the industry needs to prepare for a persistent slump that’s likely to last well into 2021 and beyond. Data aggregated by Black Box Guest Intelligence, a firm that tracks restaurant industry performance, suggests that customers remain cautious about returning to restaurants even though they report general satisfaction with the quality of food, service, and cleanliness they are encountering when they do. One growing negative is consumer perception of value in dining out. Beset by rising costs, operators have increased menu prices, and consumers have noticed, creating concerns for some customers as to whether or not they can afford to dine out as frequently as they did pre-pandemic Adding to that negative value perception is weak overall consumer confidence and general economic uncertainty, two factors that are likely to make consumers think twice about their future levels of restaurant spending. Counterpoint to IPA craze

FEW WEEKS back, I wrote a column extolling India pale ale and its market dominance. Well, not everyone took kindly to what might have been seen as a bit of trashtalking. To make matters worse, one of the folks who took exception to my column was a priest, the Rev. Matt Foley, who is decidedly not a fan of the style. I was raised by an Irish Catholic mother, so it makes me uneasy to have a man of the cloth on the other team. So, to balance the ledger a bit, I decided to write a sort of a devil’s advocate column (oops, sorry for the terminology, Father Matt!) about why some folks are not exactly thrilled about how IPAs dominate the craft beer world these days.

The bartender delivers our beers and F-Sharp takes a good haul off his choice, a “I like to believe Prior’s Double Dark. that my favorite “Where did you get that?” I ask, astounded. Kosher wines perfect for Rosh Hashanah
NEW YEAR STARTS at sundown on Friday this week. The start of the Jewish new year. The two-day celebration known as Rosh Hashanah also marks the beginning of the High Holy Days, including Yom Kippur, which takes place on Sept. 27 and 28 this year. And for those of you celebrating the start of a new year, here are a few, great kosher wines to celebrate the occasion. I’ve written about some of these kosher wines in the past. Many of these wines cost less than under $25, including a few under $15. Most of these wines are from Israel, but I also included two outstanding kosher Champagnes from France because who doesn’t love sparkling wine when it comes to celebrating the start of a new year? Let me add that both Champagnes listed below are kosher according to kosherwine.com. In addition, I have also included several, delicious kosher wines that were recommended earlier this year for Passover by Michael Quinlan, Fine Wine Buyer for Table & Vine in West Springfield. Hope you enjoy.
Kosher wines for Rosh Hashanah • 2017 Recanati Upper Galilee Chardonnay ($14.99 at Table & Vine in West Springfield) • 2017 Or Haganuz Amuka Shiraz ($17 Suggested Retail Price) • 2016 Jerusalem Vineyard ‘4990’ Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($25 SRP) • Laurent Perrier Non Vintage Brut ‘La Cuvee’ Champagne ($45 SRP) • 2008 Laurent-Perrier Brut Millesime ($80 SRP) Michael Quinlan’s recommendations • 2017 Dalton Canaan Red ($16.99 at Table & Vine)

are kosher. Fortunately, many kosher-certified wines say so on the bottle. And many wine stores often have a kosher wine section so customers can easily find such wines in their stores.

• 2017 Barkan Vineyards Classic Chardonnay Dan Israel ($13.99 at Table & Vine) • 2017 Barkan Vineyards Classic Pinot Noir Negev Israel ($13.99 at Table & Vine) What is kosher wine? Kosher wines are different than organic wines or other, similar agricultural designations. That’s because kosher wines must adhere to Jewish dietary laws in order to labeled kosher. Specifically, in order for a wine to be considered kosher, it needs to made by people who observe the Sabbath. There are lots of other rules governing kosher wine as well, including making sure that all the ingredients
Wine tasting notes 2017 Recanati Upper Galilee Chardonnay One of my favorite kosher wines, this clean, crisp, dry chardonnay has a beautiful, light floral finish. This chardonnay almost has a sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio like finish. If you love light, clean, crisp white wines, you’ll love this chardonnay from Israel.
2017 Or Haganuz Amuka Shiraz For those of you who prefer lighter red wines, this understated shiraz may just be the wine for you. Very light with a subtle hint of raspberry flavors, this easy-drinking red wine goes well with a wide range of foods, from sweet desserts to lighter meat or fish dishes. SEE WINE, PAGE E12

But turning serious, he admits he has softened his view, if only a tad. “Well there are some excellent IPAs, and even double IPAs, that I will drink as long as they have a balance to them and create a beer synergy,” he said, sipping a bit of a whiskey that he ordered. “What I don’t like sometimes is when I walk into a nice beer bar, and instead of asking what type of beer they have, I have to ask “what else do you have besides IPAs?’ If you have nine beers on tap and six of them are IPAs and there are just only three other styles, that’s rather silly and shortsighted.” But being a pragmatist who used to sell beer himself, he also understands supply and demand. “Look, if the market is driving it, and the demand is there, then so be it. But I like variety and like trying new things,” he said with a shrug. “I like to believe that my favorite beer is one I haven’t had yet.” He draws the line, however, at the newer so-called “New England IPAs,” which are known for their cloudiness. “I think it’s a shame that the region of New England has to be associated with that style,” he said. “Having been an amateur brewer for a number of years, we always tried to remove the yeast from the beer, not put extra in. I’m sure there are some good ones, but it’s not a style I’m particularly gravitating toward.” Our chat wanders over to how great the Spirit Haus was far before its time, and days (and nights) spent at The Drake in Amherst. But those tales are for another day (and upcoming column). We’ve now finished a few beers each, and as F-Sharp throws down for the tab, he sums up his attitude: “I just like things that are balanced between the hops in the malt,” he said. “And doesn’t leave me more thirsty after I drink it than when I started.” Cheers to that.

2016 Jerusalem Vineyard ‘4990’ Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon The 4990 on this stunning red wine refers to the Hebrew year when Ramban, a Spanish Talmudic scholar, who immigrated to Jerusalem in response to destruction of his homeland in Spain by crusaders. But you don’t need to know the back story of the wine’s name to appreciate its intense, earthy, complex flavors. Give this wine at least 20 to 30 minutes to smooth out after opening the bottle. This powerful red wine then has a very soft, fragrant, subtle finish. Laurent Perrier Non Vintage Brut ‘La Cuvee’ Champagne One of my favorite Champagne producers, Laurent Perrier has been making great champagne since 1812. (And remember, Champagne can only come from the Champagne region in France.) I could have easily picked several other Laurent Perrier Champagnes (including their “Brut Nature,” another outstanding one) but I decided to recommend this one since it’s affordable, readily available and delicious. Its flavors are crisp, dry, slightly nutty (think roasted almonds) and refreshing.
Michael Quinlan’s recommendations 2017 Dalton Canaan Red When asked to recommend a kosher wine for Passover, Quinlan’s first recommendation was this easy-drinking, medium-bodied red wine from Israel. “I think the quality of this wine is really good,” Quinlan said earlier this year. Table & Vine’s website also describes this wine as having “notes of black pepper, cherries, and plums, low tannins and soft vanilla tones.”
2017 Barkan Vineyards Classic Chardonnay Dan Israel (Also recommended by Ken Ross) Quinlan’s other recommended kosher wines included two wines made by Barkan Vineyards in Israel. “It’s such a particularly warm environment to be growing grapes and yet their wines are really well mannered, really well balanced,” Quinlan said. I couldn’t agree more. Last year, I recommended Barkan’s Classical Chardonnay, which has a fascinating blend of soft, subtle flavors ranging from peach to sea salt, roasted butter and a slight hint of green apple.
