other Nature is at it again. Each year from late September to early November, she takes her brush and paints a landscape of breathtaking colors — vibrant reds, shiny golds, Halloween oranges and some browns mixed in — on leaves from oak to maple to hickories and other species of trees.
This magical transformation sets the scene for leaf peepers each fall who travel to parks, woodlands, countrysides, mountains and even in the cities to relish the beauty that only Mother Nature can provide. Just as everyone asks the magic question, “What type of winter are we going to have?” wondering about the snow and cold, they also ask a similar question each season about how colorful the leaves will be. According to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the leaves won’t be as vibrant

as last year because of a lack of rain this year. They are also predicting a shorter foliage season, beginning earlier than in the past, with maple trees peaking in early October and oak trees in late October. When Peter Tomyl, president of the Mohawk Trail Regional
Tourism Council, is asked to predict what type of “leaf peeping” to expect in a given year, he tells them, “Only Mother Nature really knows.” “The leaves change color through a combination of cold nights and warm days as sumSEE LEAVES, PAGE E3

from afar maybe even staying overnight somewhere, which all helps the local economy. The fall foliage season also brings visitors in to see what we have to offer such as the area’s many attractions including the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame or the Dr. Seuss Museum right here in Springfield, she said. If you are planning a long day trip, or sleeping overnight at a bed and breakfast or hotel, Town&Country magazine recommends the following routes to drive or hike: • New Hampshire’s Kancamagus Highway • Lake Winnipesaukee Loop in New Hampshire • Vermont’s Route 100 • The Shires of Vermont Byway • Maine’s Coastal Route 1 • Maine’s Acadia National Park • Connecticut’s Route 7 and Route 9 • Route 6A in Massachusetts • Rhode Island’s Ocean Drive • The towns of Montgomery and Woodstock, Vermont; Bethel, Maine; and the city of Boston.
Tomyl is predicting a banner year for leaf peeping as far as peepers go. “We started getting calls this year much earlier than ever before, in July, from people who wanted to know more about driving the trail during foliage season. I really think COVID-19 has something to do with it ... people are anxious to get out of their homes,â€? he said. That means more people will be on the road in search of the perfect palette of colors, especially during Columbus Day Weekend. The AARP notes autumn can lull drivers into inattentiveness and recommends the following tips to stay safe: • Drivers tend to slow down when leaf peeping to enjoy a beautiful display of color. With both peepers and fallen foliage, make sure you have plenty of stopping distance to avoid a rear-ender. • Have your sunglasses handy because of the autumn glare resulting from the shifting of the sun on the horizon. • Fallen leaves can turn into a slick mess on wet roads. Beware of reduced traction when putting on the brakes.

We already have some beautiful colors visible along the higher elevation of the trail, he said. Considered as one of the first auto-touring roads in the United States, the 63-mile scenic byway opened in 1914 and stretches from the Massachusetts-New York line to Millers Falls on the Connecticut River. There are over 100 attractions along the route including country inns, gift shops camping areas, restaurants, and more. Area leaf peepers can begin their scenic drive along the Mohawk Trail in Greenfield and travel to Williamstown. Visit mohawktrail.com to download some driving tours. Locally, Mary Kay Wydra, president of the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau, said there are “some great places to view right here in Western Massachusetts. “You will find as the season progresses some really incredible views with a full array of colors. There are plenty of beautiful vistas to search out in the area from Mount Tom in Holyoke to Skinner Mountain in South Hadley to Mount Sugarloaf in South Deerfield. And don’t forget the many biking paths and trails in your area to observe the changing leaves, as well as our many forests and parks such as Forest Park in Springfield or Stanley Park in Westfield, she said. Wydra noted that leaf peeping season is also good for the economy. “During their travels people stop to get a bite to eat, do a little shopping, stop to participate in typical fall activities such as apple picking or visiting a pumpkin patch, and if they are

came to be president. Whether he’s looking at “Hillbilly Elegy,” “How to Be an Antiracist” or “On Tyranny,” Lozada argues that these books show us who we really are. “Ten Lessons for a Post-Pandemic World,” by Fareed Zakaria (Oct. 6) CNN anchor and Washington Post columnist Zakaria approaches the new realities of 2020 with his usual sangfroid, delineating the systems we must implement and the fears we must face to come out on the other side of the novel coronavirus. Zakaria considers the digital economy, the resilience of cities, the lessons of socialism and the deepening rift between the United States and China to deliver a small-scale syllabus for global course correction. “She Come by It Natural: Dolly Parton and the Women Who Lived Her Songs,” by Sarah Smarsh (Oct. 13) As she did in her 2018 memoir, “Heartland,” Smarsh offers a feminist take on America’s rural working-class women who eschew the term “feminism.” The author looks at how songs by Dolly Parton and other country-music performers illuminate stories of women who might otherwise be overlooked: tired waiters, pregnant teenagers, spurned wives, loyal daughters. “Red Comet: The Short Life and Blazing Art of Sylvia Plath,” by Heather Clark (Oct. 20) Whether or not you care about Sylvia Plath, her poetry matters, and Clark’s new biography demonstrates why. Clark examines the poet’s life and work, claiming access to unpublished writings, and showing doggedness in tracking down the writer’s friends, family members and colleagues. With its balanced attention to the poet’s personal and professional struggles, this is a major addition to Plath’s legacy.
Novel,” by Emily M. Danforth (Oct. 20) Everyone needs a delicious Gothic tale in October, and Danforth’s first novel for adults (following her YA debut, “The Miseducation of Cameron Post”) provides a tasty brew of creepy shuttered prep school, creepy reopened prep school, queer feminist legacy and modern adaptation of said legacy. The Brookhants School for Girls and its students will make you crave more of Danforth’s smart, funny prose. “150 Glimpses of the Beatles,” by Craig Brown (Oct. 13) Brown’s “Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret” captured that British icon in a unique way, and now he turns his blend of reportage, memoir and anecdote to the “lads from Liverpool.” Interviews with celebrities (including Tom Hanks and Bruce Springsteen) are interspersed with stories that never made their way into larger projects. A delight for Fab Four fans, a surprise for everyone. “The Cold Millions: A Novel,” by Jess Walter (Oct. 27) In early 20th-century Spokane, orphaned brothers Gig and Rye Dolan meet everyone from a suffragist to a large-living vaudeville performer known as Ursula the Great and a detective named Del Dalveaux who deems the Washington city where they all live a “right blood blister of a town.” Another triumph for the versatile novelist behind “Beautiful Ruins.” “Memorial: A Novel,” by Bryan Washington (Oct. 27) Ben and Mike, a gay couple, live in Houston’s historically Black Third Ward — which Ben’s middle-class Black parents disdain and Mike’s Japanese parents haven’t seen. When Mike flies to Osaka to care for his estranged, dying father, he leaves Ben and his own visiting mother, Mitsuko, together. What unfolds is a beautiful, unusual examination of the difference between love and care, and what happens when they merge.

at the Grand Theater will look for a 2021 date. Originally scheduled for Dec. 11, the rock show has been postponed to a date to be determined. Tickets purchased for the original date will be honored. Foxwoods has entered a new phase in its pandemic response, announcing social-distancing guidelines and COVID-19 capacity restrictions for a handful of upcoming shows. Those shows will feature standup comics for the time being. • Country music group Dan + Shay were scheduled for their first ever arena headlining tour this year before COVID-19 put those plans on hold. The pandemic caused the postponement of Dan + Shay’s Oct. 10 performance at Mohegan Sun Arena. That show has been moved to Sept. 11, 2021. Tickets purchased for the original date will be honored. The country pop duo is composed of vocalists and songwriters Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney. The pair won a 2018 Grammy in the best country duo category for their song “Tequila.” • Live events continue to be scrapped from the local concert scene due to coronavirus concerns. Add a performance by former J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf to that list. Wolf and his band, the Midnight Travelers, were scheduled to perform at Infinity Hall in Norfolk, Connecticut, on Oct. 16. That show has been postponed, and fans await the announcement of a future date. Tickets purchased for the original date will be honored. • Industry trade publication Pollstar has been tracking livestream numbers since the pandemic broke and recently released two new charts to its catalog. performances while the Top 50 Livestreamers recognize the artists that have racked up the most online traffic. The initial Livestream chart recognizes the virtual heavy metal Wacken festival which aired from July 29 to Aug 1 and garnered over 11 million views. French DJ David Guetta’s May 30 show came in second with over 7 million views followed by Dropkick Murphy’s (with Bruce Springsteen) May 29 “Streaming Outta Fenway” performance. The Livestreamers chart tabs Norah Jones as the top individual artist online with nearly 7 million views of her Facebook Live performances. The big winner in the alternative concert space seems to be country music as the weekly Opry Live shows have earned over 18 million views and almost 50,000 “shares.” The Opry Live shows have featured artists such as Keith Urban, Vince Gill, Luke Bryan, and Reba McEntire.
• Post Malone is gearing up for a big night at the Billboard Music Awards as the artist has landed a whopping 16 nominations. Post’s nominations include top artist, top Billboard 200 album, top male artist and top Billboard 200 artist. Malone’s 2019 album “Hollywood’s Bleeding” debuted on top of the Billboard 200 charts, selling nearly a half million copies in its first week. The awards show, originally scheduled for April, will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. on NBC. • At 93 years old, one would think Tony Bennett has a finite number of postponements left in his legendary career. Nonetheless, Foxwoods has moved the crooner off of the calendar once again. Originally scheduled for a March 13 date at Foxwoods Resort Casino, the show was moved to June 6 in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic. That performance at the Grand Theater was pushed off until Dec. 11, a date that has now been rescinded. Bennett will now appear at the Grand Theater at a date to be determined, presumably in 2021. Tickets purchased for his March show or the make-up dates are valid for the eventual new date. If fans cannot make the new performance date and want a refund, they must email their confirmation number to FWTicket@ foxwoods.com.

o you want to get in the Halloween spirit? Many TV shows for all ages tell stories of vampires, ghosts, witches, zombies and more, offering the perfect outlet to dive into a visual spookfest. So turn off the lights, curl up under a blanket, grab some popcorn (or perhaps a pumpkin-spiced treat) and check out these TV series suggestions for your supernatural viewing pleasure.
‘American Horror Story’ Each season of this horror anthology is contained within itself, and you’ll notice familiar faces as actors take on new roles. However, as the series progresses, astute fans can piece together how all the stories are intertwined. The best seasons to check out are “Murder House” (season one) about a family who unknowingly moves into a house haunted by ghosts of former residents and their victims; “Coven” (season three) about a group of witches; and “1984 (season nine),” which parodies summer-camp slasher films. Other seasons take place in an asylum, at a circus and inside a hotel inhabited by vampires and ghosts. Fair warning: It’s spooky and supernatural, but it can be gory at times.
Watch nine seasons on Hulu. ‘Bates Motel’ This psychological horror drama is a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.” It depicts the life of Norman Bates and his mother prior to the events of the 1960 film. Watch five seasons on Netflix. ‘Courage the Cowardly Dog’ Courage overcomes his fears to protect his owners Eustace and Muriel from ghosts, monsters, aliens, zombies, vampires and more in this horror cartoon. While it is a cartoon, “Courage the Cowardly Dog” may be too frightening for younger viewers and is recommended for ages 10 and older.

Watch it on Shudder. ‘Goosebumps’ “Goosebumps” adapts the creepy collection of tales crafted by author R.L. Stine for the TV screen. From a mask that can’t be removed once donned to a horror theme park, killer camera, werewolf and dummy that comes to life, spooky adventures abound for ages 8 and older. Watch it on Netflix. ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ Sabrina Spellman discovers she’s a witch on her 16th birthday and lives with her peculiar aunts, who teach her the ways of witchcraft, until going away to college. And who could forget black cat Salem, who provides many comedic moments through all of his scheming plots? The sitcom is based on a 1960s comic-book series and an animated series that aired in

And there are some new faces in Picard’s crew: Alison Pill as Dr. Agnes Jurati, an expert on androids with a few secrets; Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker, an old colleague of Picard’s with a tortured past, and Santiago Cabrera, as rogue pilot Chris Rios, ferrying Picard across space. Beef, poultry supply returns to normal
HERE’S GOOD NEWS for consumers and restaurant owners alike — the production system for fresh meat and poultry continues to recover from the earlier bottlenecks the pandemic brought about. As reported in the Wall Street Journal, processing levels for beef, pork, and chicken has returned to normal, resulting in prices for those commodities retreating to their pre-pandemic levels. Echoes of the ongoing constraints on restaurant operations can be seen in the market for specific beef and poultry products. Primal beef ribs, the source of the restaurant-favorite prime rib, were down more than 10% last month over January 2020 price levels, a decline driven by weak food service sales. With many fewer weddings and banquets booked, the restaurant-driven demand for prime rib has been much less than normal, causing prices to decline markedly. Similarly, chicken wings are cheaper than they were a year ago. A bar food staple, demand for raw wings has been less than robust during the pandemic. Many fewer are being fried and sauced as sports venue concessions, bars and restaurants remain closed or operate on a limited basis. Don’t look for this drop in wholesale prices to result in immediate menu price declines, since cash-strapped operators are likely to retain any savings on their food purchases to help fund other expenses. Some chains and independents might instead offer “specials” that take advantage of plentiful supply and lower wholesale costs. Family pack of chicken wings, anyone? Unibroue cleans up at World Beer Awards
I
USED TO THINK THAT the best Belgian beers were made in Belgium. That only makes sense, right? I mean, I had had plenty of American breweries’ attempts at Belgian-style ales, and while a lot of them were good, I never found any that were on the level of, say, Rochefort 10 (which is possibly my favorite Belgian beer). Then, around 1999, I discovered Unibroue, a fantastic brewery in Chambly, Quebec, Canada. (The brewery had been going since 1992, but just never landed on my radar – and this was four years before I even started writing this column.) And its beers made me reassess my whole way of thinking about Belgian beer.

an easy wine to love. I’ve long been a big fan of these hearty, flavorful white wines. This gewurztraminer illustrates why. Floral, licorice-like flavors abound in this fragrant, dry wine. There’s also hints of anise and tropical fruits in the taste and aromas. Let me add that the Sparr family has been making wines in Alsace since 1680. So it should come as no surprise that this refreshing white wine tastes so great. Practice makes perfect.
Tasting notes: Fans of clean, crisp, dry white wines likely already know all about pinot gris wines. This particular one raises the bar. A beautiful blend of subtle, fruit flavors (apricot, lemon and blood orange), this pinot gris also remains wonderfully dry and refreshing. There’s also a hint of minerality to the wine that makes it ideal for spicy or heartier fall foods like duck, turkey or lamb. A truly delicious wine and a great example of Alsace’s gracious pinot gris wines.

and Mexico is interconnected with illegal drug trafficking by Mexican cartels and the associated violence – as well as the role of the United States in all of it. Co-directors Sebastian Junger and Nick Quested chew on these legal, social, political and economic themes by framing the film within a simple context. “Blood” begins with stories about two migrants: 17-year Ludy from Honduras, and Sara, the matriarch of a family from Guatemala, both of whom are shown traveling via caravan toward the U.S. border. The rest of the film grapples with the violent work of narco-traffickers, and the failure of all concerned parties – chiefly the Mexican and U.S. authorities – to see the interrelatedness of poverty, drugs, immigration and violence. As one of the subjects notes, the problems are neither Mexican nor American, but “regional.” At times in this film, these problems seem greater than any one documentary can fully or finally digest.
