very music fan with blood burning in their veins has felt the sting of missing live shows since March, but the pain has been particularly acute for Bruce Springsteen, an artist who has spent the past six decades onstage, yet says he’s just now hitting his stride.

“I’m at a point in my playing life and artistic life where I’ve never felt as vital,” he said on a Zoom call from his New Jersey home. “My band is at its best, and we have so much accumulated knowledge and craft about what we do that this was a time in my life where I said, ‘I want to use that as much as I can.’” Springsteen, 71, was stationed in a small, utilitarian home office, with primary-color file folders hanging on the wall in place of flashier décor, to discuss “Letter to You,” his first record with the

E Street Band in six years, and an Apple Plus film of the same name that captures the kinetic experience of recording it last November. Both are out tomorrow. “Letter to You” often harks back to a time much earlier than that, though: The elegiac rocker “Last Man Standing” is an ode to the band Springsteen joined as a teenager, the Castiles (and a meditation on the fact that, after the death of his friend George Theiss in 2018, Springsteen became the only surviving member). And three of the album’s songs originated almost 50 years ago,

when Springsteen was an unknown, writing florid, Bob Dylan-esque ballads. “The record is the first record that I’ve made where the subject is the music itself,” he said. “It’s about popular music. It’s about being in a rock band over the course of time. And it’s also a direct conversation between me and my fans at a level that I think they’ve come to expect

over the years.” These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

Elle Fanning reigns in ‘The Great’ By Katie Foran-McHale

“The Great: Season One”: For those who loved 2018’s critically acclaimed raunchy satirical period piece “The Favourite,” co-writer Tony McNamara is back as creator of Hulu’s “The Great,” also a critically acclaimed raunchy satirical period piece, this time centering on a barely true retelling of Empress Catherine the Great’s introduction into Russian royal life. New to Russia, Catherine (Elle Fanning) is an idealist, set on spearheading the country’s education policy and eager to please her husband, Emperor Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). She quickly discovers he’s not only a dolt but a sadistic one, and the two begin to plot against each other. The jokes are acerbic and profanities abundant, but as the season progresses, so grows the series’ heart. Fanning’s performance in particular carries “The Great,” wrote Los Angeles Times critic Robert Lloyd in his review. “The dialogue is crisp and a little eccentric, the performances impeccable, the production first-rate, Nathan Barr’s score subtly arresting,” wrote Lloyd. “Above all there

is Fanning, a porcelain figurine come to complicated life, who grounds the series even as she seems to float through it.” Also new on DVD “Alone”: A killer (Marc Menchaca) hunts a woman (Jules Willcox) who escaped from his clutches in the Pacific Northwest wilderness. “Amulet”: A woman (Carla Juri) and her elderly mother invite an ex-soldier (Alec Secareanu) into their home of terrifying secrets. “Cut Throat City”: A group of friends plan a heist in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans. Transposed from early 20th-century Oakland, California, to a vaguely mid-century Naples, filmmaker Pietro Marcello’s Italian-language adaptation of Jack London’s 1909 novel “Martin Eden” features an intense performance by Luca Marinelli in the title role of an unschooled aspiring writer consumed by love, ambition and politics. It’s a performance that won him the best-actor prize at last year’s Venice Film Festival, and deservedly so. Marinelli’s acting, which unfortunately includes some rotten teeth and strange hair color changes as the character finds publishing success (but inner misery) late in the story, is fiery and polemical. Martin rails against a world that has let him down – in love, presumably – even as he achieves fame and success. As in the novel, Martin is mistaken for being a socialist (like London, who was one), but he actually believes only in the power of the individual to improve himself, through education. London’s novel was a critique of such a selfish worldview, but it’s often difficult to parse the arguments that Martin – or rather Marcello, assisted by his co-writer Maurizio Braucci – makes, ad nauseam, throughout the film. That’s because the story is set in an unrecognizably fictionalized “Italy” in which the country’s actual political gyrations are freely

dispensed with for nonspecific allusions to an unnamed war and generic class inequality. Ultimately, it’s a story of unrequited love: Martin is spurned by his cultured girlfriend (Jessica Cressy) until he has made it, by which point it is too late. His passion is palpable and moving, but that part of the story is weighed down by dull political theory. Unrated. Available at afisilver.afi.com and virtualavalon.org. In Italian, Neapolitan and French with subtitles. 129 minutes. Two rather different but worthy prison-themed documentaries are out now. “Time” follows New Orleans car dealer Fox Rich (formerly Sibil Fox Richardson) as she works to free her husband Rob Rich (formerly Rob Richardson), who was sentenced to

60 years in prison for the 1997 armed robbery of a Louisiana credit union. “Belly of the Beast” is an exposé about the illegal practice of sterilizations performed on women in California’s prison system without informed consent. The latter film is the more traditional of the two movies, following crusading attorney Cynthia Chandler – co-founder and former executive director of Justice Now, which advocates for the abolition of prisons – and Kelli Dillon, who was unknowingly sterilized while incarcerated. It’s shocking to hear the rationale for forced sterilization, articulated by former prison OB/GYN James Heinrich (as reported by journalist Corey Johnson of the Center for Investigative Reporting): It’s cheaper than welfare. The black-and-white “Time,” on the other hand, is a more artful and ambitious work in scope and tone, mixing fly-on-the-wall footage shot by filmmaker Garrett Bradley with home movies shot by Fox Rich over 21 years, after she herself was released from 3 1/2 years in prison for her role as an accessory to the crime. Bradley’s film accomplishes two things at once. It’s a portrait of a woman with a steel will and undying love; and a meditation on the passage of

Safety of indoor dining worrisome

HOUGH THE TOPIC hasn’t been grabbing headlines recently, the question of indoor dining’s relative safety during the current pandemic lingers in the minds of diners and restaurant owners alike. Many jurisdictions, most recently New York City, have permitted restaurant dining rooms to open as long as certain protocols were observed — scaled-back capacity, socially distanced seating, staff with masks and gloves, and face coverings worn by patrons except while actually consuming food or drink. Recent guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has, however, called into question the efficacy of “social distancing” in indoor settings, with the agency citing the disease transmission risk from airborne particles that can float in the air for hours. The National Restaurant Association has updated its guidance to those establishments reopening their dining rooms, encouraging owners and operators to provide proper ventilation, citing “some (COVID-19) transmission risk” from airborne particles. DINE & WINE White Lion is a refreshing throwback to just good ol’ tasty beer that has flavors that sit mostly in the middle of the “wildness” spectrum: certainly not boring, but also nothing any beer drinker has to fear trying.

Outstanding Burgundy red wine under $30

Y

OU COULD LITERally spend your entire life exploring the charming French villages in Burgundy and easily never taste the same wine twice. For such a small slice of France (many of the best wine villages here take up a narrow, 43-mile-long slice of land about the same distance as Springfield to Greenfield), Burgundy produces an astounding array of red and white wines due to a complex blend of different soils.

This week’s recommended wine, an outstanding Burgundy wine under $30. (KEN ROSS PHOTO)

NE GREAT ASPECT of being a columnist (as opposed to doing straight news or features) is that you get to state your opinion. This is somewhat crucial when writing about subjects such as music, film, and beer, of course. One negative aspect is that you rarely ever get to break hot stories. That lesser side of the job reared its head this week with the news that White Lion Brewing announced that it had finally started brewing at its downtown Springfield location — making it the first brewery to do so in the city since before Prohibition. Since this column is weekly, and I turn my copy in almost a week in advance, you’re just hearing about it from me today.

Best of all, this delightful red wine is relatively affordable (less than $30 a bottle), something that’s not always the case when it comes to many great Burgundy wines, which can easily cost hundreds of dollars or more for a single bottle.

And even though most villages in Burgundy produce only two types of wine – pinot noir and chardonnay – the difference from one village to another, or even one vineyard to another in the same village, can be mindboggling. (A winemaker in Burgundy once told me you could give the exact same grapes to several different winemakers and each one would produce a completely different wine and I agree, but that’s a different story.) That’s why I wasn’t especially surprised when I recently tasted the 2018 Domaine Parize Pere Et Fils Givry 1er Cru Clos Les Grandes Vignes ($26.99 at Table & Vine in West Springfield), another outstanding pinot noir from Givry, a less well-known village in the southern part of Burgundy.

About Givry Givry is the name of a village in the southern part of Burgundy. Specifically, Givry is located just south of Mercurey, a better-known wine village in the Cote Chalonnaise region of Burgundy just south of Cote De Beaune. Confused already? Don’t worry. All you need to know is the Cote Chalonnaise region is relatively unknown compared to Cote De Beaune, which is the southern part of the better known Cote D’Or region, the name given to some of the best wine growing villages in Burgundy. Givry is best known for producing some of “the most charming and the most stylish” red wines of the Cote Chalonnaise region, according to Clive Coates in his 2008 book, “The Wines Of SEE WINE, PAGE E12

going to be a process before people are comfortable rubbing up against one another again. But if somebody told me, “That’s never going to happen again,” that would be a big life change for me. That act of playing has been one of the only consistent things in my life since I was 16 years old. I’ve depended a lot on it not just for my livelihood but for my emotional well-being. So if somebody said, “Five years from now, maybe” – that’s a long time, particularly at my age. I’m 71, and I’m thinking, “Well, I know one thing. I’m in the mood right now to burn the house down for as long as I can.”

Burgundy.” I definitely agree based on this wonderful red wine from Domaine Parize Pere Et Fils. In particular, Givry has 25 “premier cru” vineyards, a term used to describe wines made from exceptional grapes. One of the “premier cru” vineyards in Givry is Les Grandes Vignes, the vineyard where the pinot noir grapes were grown to make this week’s recommended wine. About Domaine Parize Pere Et Fils This family-owned winery (“fils” is French for “sons”) has been making wine in Burgundy for six generations, according to the winery’s American importer, Ideal Wines. Like most wineries in Burgundy, Domaine Parize Pere Et Fils produces pinot noir and chardonnay wines, along with a small amount of aligote, a distinct white wine produced by several other wineries in this southern part of Burgundy. The winery is has been fully organic for several years and produces roughly 4,000 cases of wine each year.

Tasting notes 2018 Domaine Parize Pere Et Fils Givry 1er Cru Clos Les Grandes Vignes

I will confess that I was a bit skeptical about how good such a young red wine would taste at this early point in its development. I personally tend to enjoy many red wines (especially from Burgundy) after they’ve had a few years or more to mature. Such fears were completely unnecessary. I’m sure this wine will age beautifully over the next three to fivw years, but why wait? This wonderful wine tastes great right now. This charming, vivacious wine abounds with fresh, ripe fruit flavors, including fresh-picked raspberries and blackberries. Right from the first sip, this pinot noir delivers a fascinating blend of vibrant fruit notes along with hints of dark chocolate and a slightly meaty texture. Let me add that while the fruit flavors are lively and prominent, they are not overwhelming or sweet or cloying. Instead, they simply hit all the right notes like a skilled jazz pianist. One more thing, as Lieutenant Columbo used to say. I last had a sip of this wine several minutes ago and I can still taste and feel its soft, silky finish on the tip of my tongue, always a great sign. A truly delightful wine that deserves more recognition. Cheers! Wine Press by Ken Ross appears on Masslive.com every Monday and in The Republican’s weekend section every Thursday.
