rganizers of this year’s cider event that has blossomed beyond Franklin County are hoping they will be racking one success after another. The annual CiderDays has taken on a new form — the season-long Cider Trail 2020 — which leads visitors to 16 stops where they can explore the world of cider and apples.

Local orchards and cider makers will welcome guests for fresh picked apples, sweet cider, hard cider, cider donuts, apple brandy and spirits all in safe, socially distanced venues. The change is disappointing, said Lisa B. Davol, marketing and events manager for the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce. “The events and workshops and tastings are core to CiderDays, but the biggest aspect of the event is the community that it engenders. People come not only for the workshops but to see their ‘cider family’ each year. … They look forward to the familiar faces and camaraderie around cider.” CiderDays usually takes place during the first weekend in November and has grown
in the past 26 years into an internationally recognized event that draws some 4,000 visitors from the United States, Canada and Europe. It features apple tastings, orchard tours, workshops on making sweet cider, cooking demonstrations, fermenting hard cider and more. This year, because of COVID-19, the celebration of all things apple will be a fall self-guided tour of orchards, cideries and related venues. Organizers decided that this year, with restrictions on crowds and other pandemic-related limitations, to suspend the big gatherings they usually have, encourage people to come to Western Massachusetts for a longer period than

In 2003, the documentary filmmaker Errol Morris made “The Fog of War,” a masterful portrait of former defense secretary Robert McNamara in which McNamara’s singular combination of protective justification and self-awareness created a fascinating, densely layered psychological profile. Morris used the same strategy to less edifying effect in “The Unknown Known,” about Donald Rumsfeld. Now, with “American Dharma,” the format has reached the rock bottom of diminishing returns. In this ambitious, frustrating and finally toothless film, Morris sets out to interrogate Stephen Bannon, one of President Donald Trump’s most notorious advisers and, not incidentally, a filmmaker himself. Using clips from Bannon favorites such as “Twelve O’Clock High,” “The Searchers” and Orson Welles’s “Chimes at Midnight,” Morris seeks to create a grand unified theory of Bannon’s psyche, leading him in a wide-ranging conversation about his philosophical evolution from a “touchy-feely” liberal to right-wing culture warrior. When “American Dharma” made its North American debut at Toronto two years ago, Morris insisted that his aim was to “understand our enemy.” But in the absence of genuinely probing questions or intellectually vigorous pushback, the film winds up letting Bannon run out the clock, flattered by Morris’s attention – Bannon tells Morris that “The Fog of War” inspired him to make documentaries – and increasingly delighted when he realizes his interlocutor isn’t laying a glove on him. (For a fair, engrossing and entertaining depiction of Bannon and his agenda, watch Alison Klayman’s far more effective “The Brink.”) “American Dharma’s” final image might be the most revealing moment in a film that turns out to be a dual portrait of two men equally entranced with the

2 outstanding vegan wines from Italy
ANY PEOPLE know and search for organic wines. Biodynamic wines have also gained a loyal following in recent years. But what about vegan wines? What does it take for a wine to be considered vegan? And are they any good? Based on this week’s wines from a winemaker in Italy, some vegan wines are absolutely outstanding. Both red wines recommended this week come from Bocale, a vegan-certified winery located in Italy’s Umbria region. Below, you can learn more about this winery, vegan wines and read a short interview with Valentino Valentini, owner and producer at Bocale. Hope you enjoy.
This year we wanted to increase our efforts, gaining the vegan certification for our wines and starting a threeyear path to obtain the organic certification. This is the result of a different concept of agriculture, that we pursued since the beginning.

we focused more and more on the consumers and their health. Bocale’s wines are therefore produced without any animal derivates, eggs or dairy products. This is the first step to protect our customers, not only the ones that choose a vegan lifestyle, but also those affected by allergies. Our priority is to produce high quality and unique wines, made from our indigenous grapes that are good for men’s and environment’s health.

As many vegetarians probably know, something classified as vegan cannot contain any animal products, including eggs or dairy products. Many wines contain animal products used to process and clarify the wine. Such processing agents often include milk protein (casein), gelatin (animal protein) or egg whites (albumin). In recent years, some wineries have stopped using such animal products to process and refine their wines, including Bonny Doon Vineyards in California and

Choral Festival. Her recordings include “Telemann’s Day of Judgment,” Mozart’s “Mass in C minor,” Monteverdi’s “Vespers of 1610,” and Sousa’s “Desiree.” Brunssen’s students have gone on to win many competitions including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and have sung professionally and in young artist programs with the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Washington National Opera and many others. She is constantly active as a clinician, master teacher, panelist, adjudicator, and presenter worldwide, most recently at the 2020 Online Eurovox Conference for the European Voice Teachers Association, the 2020 Classical Singer Virtual Conference, etc. Asked about her own early singing history, Brunssen remembered, “My mother says I was singing in tune at the age of 1-1/2 years when she could recognize the tune, but not the words, to ‘Jesus Loves Me,’ when I’d be left to play in the crib until she could come and get me. “At age 6 I took some piano lessons, and the teacher eventually called my mother to say I should just quit. ‘Karen has no abilities,’ the teacher said. ‘Her mind wanders too much.’ So I quit, but I loved singing always and learned to play a few chords on the ukulele when I was 9 or 10.” Brunssen loved the folk music of the time – songs like “Michael Row the Boat Ashore,” “Kumbaya,” and “500 Miles.” When she was 11, her parents bought a spinet organ and arranged for six free lessons. “I loved it and continued to improve quickly,” she said. “By age 13 I played my first church service at our Lutheran church and by 10th grade I was our church organist. I sang in junior high with a robust, chesty sound. I learned to play the guitar and went around singing for events as Karen and Her Guitar. Her high school choir director gave Brunssen some serious voice lessons and helped her
to find her head voice, and her vibrato. He gave her her first solo opportunity and she was sold on singing. “I majored in voice at Luther College, got lots of solo opportunities, and loved choir with Weston Noble. I had no big singing plans, by my voice grew. I went to Yale School of Music for one semester, then quit and came home and worked as a front desk clerk at the local nice hotel from 6-2 p.m., then came home and taught a steady stream of high school voice students from 3-8 three nights of the week.” Brunssen participated in the Summer Blossom Festival for three years, then married her college boyfriend. “That was almost 44 years ago now,” Brunssen said. “His career was as a high school choral director, so my teaching continued. We lived in Chicago and I got into Music of the Baroque, Chicago Symphony Chorus, etc. I started getting lots of solo gigs with ensembles and finally got an agent in New York (Dispeker) and got to sing all over the place.” Brunssen always taught voice as well, first at the high school level, then at Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois, and finally at Northwestern, where she has been “very happy” for 27 years and is a full professor. Her vast experience as singer, teacher, and clinician is put down in print in her book, and it offers her a great deal of information for such presentations as the one she will give on Saturday to the PVS audience. She hopes to instill in her listeners the confidence “that singers can and should sing throughout their entire lives, and that their physical bodies change constantly, requiring them to consider what is best for their voices to do.” “Expectation for ourselves and those we may be working with as teachers or conductors need to be realistic and are not the same from age to age. Take pride in what you can do, and let go of what you can’t do, but always enjoy the effort to do your best.” Further information and tickets at $15 each for Brunssen’s presentation are available on the PVS website, pvsoc.org.
