While many cities across the country are increasingly opening up, the state of entertainment remains bifurcated. Socially distanced indoor shows have returned to live-music venues like City Winery in New York and Nutty Brown Amphitheatre in Austin, Texas, while NY PopsUp is offering a series of indoor and outdoor performances at locations across New York state, leading up to the eventual reopening of Broadway. But until vaccination numbers increase, livestreamed shows will continue. And as the traditional concert seasons near, the scale increases. For example, the Glastonbury Festival (which will not occur in person until 2022) is holding a concert featuring customary top-tier artists. But while signs of a recovery might be in the air in some places, COVID remains top of mind. So kick back and safely enjoy tuning in to some of these multigenre continent-spanning shows. Van Morrison The day after the release of his latest album, “Latest Record Project: Number 1,” the Northern Irish artist will perform songs from it, along with some bestknown hits, in what will be his first virtual concert. Morrison has made waves in recent months with his anti-lockdown stance, which included a threat to sue the Northern Ireland Department of Health, and recently released three songs addressing the shutdown, including “No More Lockdown.” None of the three will appear on SEE CONCERTS, PAGE E5

FILM REVIEW
Dave Grohl’s new rock doc is an epic road trip By Karla Peterson
The San Diego Union-Tribune
Gather ’round the pop-culture campfire, boys and girls. It’s time for Uncle Edge and Cousin Exene and Grandpa Ringo to tell you a story about a crazy, beautiful time when future rock stars roamed the Earth in smelly vans, logging thousands of road miles for the privilege of playing live for you and a few dozen of your sweaty friends in a small, also-smelly nightclub near you. Remember live concerts? Dive bars? The joys of discovering amazing bands long before they became famous? Foo Fighters leader and massive rock geek Dave Grohl remembers, and with his new documentary, “What Drives Us,” he wants to make sure that you and your fellow rock ‘n’ roll friends never forget. Released Friday on Amazon Prime Video’s new Coda Collection channel, “What Drives Us” finds Grohl interviewing dozens of rock stars, indie icons and up-and-comers about their origin stories. What inspired them to make music? What were those early road trips like? And how did the hours they spent crammed in a van with their cranky bandmates change their lives forever? “All of the biggest bands in the world, they had to start somewhere. Everybody I know started like this,” Grohl says. “In a van.” Or almost everybody. “I realize that I actually never toured in a van,” Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich says to Grohl at the beginning of the 88-minute film. “Can I go now?” He’s just joshing. One of the beauties of “What Drives Us” is that everybody is more than happy to talk to the gregarious Grohl, who gets some very famous people to say some

They are separated by many decades, but they share a passion for music that is so powerful, doing anything else has never been an option. There are worse problems to have than too much of many good things, but the whirlwind pace means that “What Drives Us” never has time to go deep on any of the subjects its interviewees are so keen to talk about. And except for the small chunk devoted to Dead Kennedys drummer D.H. Peligro and the drug problems that consumed him after the band broke up, there is no real talk about the tolls you pay when you hit the rock-life Dave Grohl of the band Foo Fighters performs at the Rock in Rio music festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sept. 29, 2019. AST YEAR, SPRINGfield singer-songwriter Peter J. Newland created a social media initiative #thxcrgvr (Thanks Caregiver) to make it easy for everyone to send messages of support and appreciation to front-line health care workers via a message using that hashtag on Facebook and Instagram. Newland also wrote a song about the pandemic. “I began writing ‘Lean On Me\Stand By You’ when I realized the difficult times we were headed toward,” he said. Now the song has become a video. Newland, formerly of FAT, teamed up with West Springfield photographer/videographer Walt Steinmetz, Andrea Newland and David Newland to create the production team. The video stars Erin Greene Wallace from Greene Room Productions in Monson. The song and video will premiere in a livestreamed event from Total Eclipse Studios today, which is National Nurses Day, at 7 p.m. There will be a 45-minute live performance by Peter and his band RadioX, followed by the first-ever screening of the “Lean On Me\Stand By You” video. The event will be streamed on both YouTube and Facebook. https://www.you tube.com/channel/UCvE_ iJNCXDb42gcg31wNb7Q and Facebook: https://www. facebook.com/peter.new land.71

From exposés to zombies and serial killers, the month’s new movies and shows have something for everyone. ‘The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness’ In 1976 and ’77, New York City was rocked by a series of shootings and stabbings perpetrated by a serial killer who left teasing notes, calling himself “The Son of Sam.” Eventually a postal worker named David Berkowitz was arrested and pleaded guilty. Later, Berkowitz insisted he was part of satanic cult that aided in his spree, but subsequent investigations produced no further arrests. Director Joshua Zeman (best-known for the chilling documentaries “Cropsey” and “Murder Mountain”) revisits the murders in this four-part series with Paul Giamatti narrating as the voice of Maury Terry, a journalist who wrote newspaper articles and a book suggesting that Berkowitz did not act alone. ‘Mythic Quest’ Season 2 “Ted Lasso” has been Apple TV+’s most talked-about show so far — and rightly so — but this other Apple sitcom deserves just as much buzz. Season 1 introduced the staff of a popular video-game company, led by gifted egomaniac Ian (played by Rob McElhenney, who also cocreated the show) and brilliant but neurotic programmer Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao). As in the previous episodes, this new season derives its humor from the pretensions and preoccupations of a bunch of committed gamers, but gets its heart from how much passion they have for what they’ve built together. Streaming Friday on Apple TV+.
‘Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World’ The anti-poverty organization Global Citizen is embarking on an ambitious mission with its Vax Live concert to both endorse vaccination against COVID-19 and advocate for global access to doses. The show, which was taped at Southern California’s SoFi stadium Sunday, will be hosted by Selena Gomez with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle serving as campaign chairs. President Joe Biden will also appear, while Jennifer Lopez and the Foo Fighters will be among the acts performing. Saturday, 8 p.m.; airing on ABC, CBS, Fox and YouTube
‘Monster’ This courtroom drama debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018 before falling into distribution limbo, despite largely positive reviews. In the years since, lead actor Kelvin Harrison Jr. has excelled in several high-profile dramas. Here he plays a Harlem teenager who gets arrested for murder after standing near the wrong bodega at the wrong time. Based on Walter Dean Myers’ National Book Award-nominated young adult novel, “Monster” alternates between scenes from the trial and glimpses of the relatively privileged life he led before. The movie
also features the always-riveting John David Washington (pre-“BlacKkKlansman” and “Tenet”) in a minor role. Streaming Friday on Netflix. ‘The Crime of the Century’ The latest investigative documentary from director-producer Alex Gibney is a two-part exposé in which several experts argue that some major American pharmaceutical companies deliberately helped fuel the opioid crisis. With the help of some of the Washington Post and New York Times journalists who have reported in depth on “Big Pharma” (and with the input of Patrick Radden Keefe, whose book “Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty” was published this April), Gibney and his crew trace the long, often sordid history of legal narcotics. It also relies heavily on some shocking video footage from legal depositions and sales conferences, revealing how corporate decision-makers may have exploited their customers. MOVIES DVD RELEASES
Daniel Kaluuya shines in Oscar-winning film Tribune News Service A leading awards-season contender that just nabbed two Oscars headlines the new releases for this week. “Judas and the Black Messiah”: Daniel Kaluuya recently won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his portrayal of Illinois Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton, killed in his sleep by Chicago law enforcement in 1969, with LaKeith Stanfield nominated in the same category for playing the “Judas” in question, a man who infiltrates the Black Panthers at the behest of the FBI. Writing for Tribune News Service, critic Katie Walsh lauded director Shaka King for his focus on Hampton’s words and revolutionary beliefs, saying the movie is “an inspiring portrait of the young activist, paired with an examination of the FBI’s insidious cultivation of informant William O’Neal [Stanfield], who was integral to their surveillance and murder of Hampton. King’s dual focus and stylish cinematic approach makes for a biopic that is at once rousing, maddening and desperately tragic.” Walsh also praised the performance of the film’s future Oscar winner, saying “Kaluuya, one of the best working actors today, is transformed, and riveting, as Hampton; it’s hard to imagine a better performance by an actor this year.” In addition to Kaluuya’s Oscar win, the film also claimed best original song, for “Fight For You” by H.E.R., Dernst Emile II and Tiara Thomas. “The story of Fred Hampton has always been one of frustration, sorrow and anger at [FBI Director Jay Edgar] Hoover’s sick obsession with destroying civil rights leaders who dared to imagine racial justice and equality,” Walsh concludes in her review.

Daniel Kaluuya in a scene from “Judas and the Black Messiah.”(WARNER BROS. PICTURES)
“While ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ allows space for that rage, it also reminds us of the power of Hampton’s words, offering a powerful tribute to the activist whose legacy looms large.” Also new on DVD “The Little Things”: Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto star in this pulpy thriller from director John Lee Hancock. Washington is Joe Deacon, a sheriff ’s deputy who becomes embroiled in the search for a serial killer, led by Malek’s young detective character. The investigation comes to focus on a creepy loner (Jared Leto), but is he really the killer? “The Virtuoso”: Anson Mount plays an assassin sent to a small town on a job by his mentor, Anthony Hopkins, who recently won his second best actor Oscar for “The Father.” Left minimal instruction, the methodical assassin must decipher a cryptic clue to identify his target, with an added complication presented by an alluring woman (Abbie Cornish). Out on On Demand “Dark State”: A small-town reporter’s investigation of a mysterious car crash leads her to uncover far more than she expected. In the end, she must decide — expose the truth or accept that a global cabal known as the Dark State may actually be ruling the world.

Marriage is scary in horror tale ‘Things Heard & Seen’
A
By Adam Graham
The Detroit News
Manhattan couple moves to a farm community in upstate New York in “Things Heard & Seen,” and when an acquaintance reminds them they’re in Headless Horseman country, it’s not surprising that those things heard and seen aren’t going to be puppy dogs and rainbows. But this slow burn drama is just as much a character study as it is a ghost story. It doesn’t have jump scares a la the “Conjuring” movies or loud crashes like the “Insidious” chapters, but it’s an intriguing story about
a faltering marriage and a house built on a foundation of lies, with the spirit world lingering just within reach. Amanda Seyfried is Catherine Claire, an artist married to her professor husband George (James Norton), who has just accepted a new job at a small university in Chosen, New York. George quickly becomes the most popular professor on campus, especially with his female students. His open flirtation with one young girl in town (“Yes, God, Yes’” Natalia Dyer) yields unsurprising results. Meanwhile George’s department head Floyd (the great F. Murray Abraham) is an open believer in the supernatural. When Catherine reports to him a series of strange occurrences inside their house at night, he opens her eyes to the hidden history of their home and the patterns of the past her marriage is following. Directed by Shari Springer

Berman and Robert Pulcini (“American Splendor,” “The Nanny Diaries”), “Things Heard & Seen” is a quiet study of a man whose world is unraveling set against the backdrop of a psychological horror tale. (It’s based on Elizabeth Brundage’s 2016 novel “All Things Cease to Appear,” which frankly has a better title than “Things Heard & Seen.”) Seyfried and Norton are believable as the couple at its center, and Berman and Pulcini paint them into a world that’s beginning to crumble around them. Yes, things go bump in the night, but in “Things Heard & Seen,” the scares are mostly of the domestic variety.

The challenge, at least for the foreseeable future, will not be just getting customers back in the door. Restaurant managers and owners will also have to find — and keep — the employees needed to serve those returning diners.
T’S ALWAYS GREAT when a beer brewed to benefit a good cause is actually a really good beer. I always want to support good causes, but I also don’t want to tell readers to buy a less-than-tasty brew. This is especially true for me this week, as the good cause is one that is close to my heart. Leadfoot Brewing in my old hometown of Chicopee just finished brewing a batch of a new beer named Summer Setter. HE “HELP WANTed” signs are hard to miss. They’re everywhere — in restaurant windows, on parking lot signs, and embedded in social media posts. As restaurants reopen and expand their operating hours, most find themselves with a new crisis on their hands in the form of a staff shortage. Even though it is estimated that some 2 million former restaurant workers remain unemployed, food service outlets, whether chain-operated or independent, are finding themselves unable to attract enough candidates to fill the jobs they have available. The current restaurant employment crunch is thought by many in the industry as having multiple causes. First of all, many who had restaurant jobs and lost them during shutdowns in March 2020 have moved on, taking positions in warehouse operations, delivery, food retail, and e-commerce, all of which have enjoyed rapid employment growth as a result of the pandemic. Some former restaurant employees are undoubtedly remaining on the sidelines, willing for now to rely on enhanced unemployment benefits. Those benefits can, under the right circumstances, produce as much income as a full-time restaurant job might pay. Others, it’s assumed, are shying away from restaurant jobs, especially front-of-thehouse work, out of fear. Being around a dining room full of customers with their masks off might not come across to an unvaccinated 20-something as an entirely safe working environment. Some restaurant owners have dealt with their recruiting problems by bumping up the hourly rate they’re willing to pay, but that solution isn’t an easy one to implement,

An end-of-day food donation program is one of the sustainability options now available to franchisees. Dunkin’ operators can elect to donate bakery items and unclaimed catering orders to local food banks rather than trashing those leftovers. Dunkin’ is additionally setting up programs to handle coffee grounds and the other compostable organics the brand’s donut shops generate. The chain has also switched the coffee stirrers it gives out from plastic to wooden. Favorite wine memories involving my mom
OR MANY REASONS, this wine column would not even exist if it weren’t for my mom, Gloria Ross. First, there’s the obvious reason why. I wouldn’t even exist without my mom. Second, my family’s obsession with wine started with my mom. In the past, I’ve written here about my mom’s favorite wines. In honor of Mother’s Day this year, I thought I might write about some of the favorite wine memories involving my mom, who still loves wine and loves life with gusto at 84 years old. I hope you enjoy. About my mom My mom was born and raised in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park. The daughter of a train conductor and a milliner, my mom loved to do a wide range of things as a kid, from playing baseball to learning how to play the piano, reading or riding her bike around her neighborhood with her two, small dogs in a basket perched on her handlebars. My mom went to college in Iowa at 16 and studied to be a dietitian. And that’s exactly what she did after she graduated and moved to New York City. But there’s more to my mom than what she did for work. My mom was — and remains — passionate about the arts. And that love flourished in Manhattan in the 1950s and ’60s. She saw numerous plays working as an usher and still has hundreds of theater programs to prove it. She used to live above the Thalia movie theater on the Upper West Side and would go several nights week to see movies by Bergmann, Fellini or whatever else was playing. She regularly went to art museums and spent hours looking at the paintings, something my mom still loves to do. Living in Manhattan in the early ’60s, my mom also
experience was exhilarating. One winery I remember my mom enjoying in particular was Robert Biale Vineyards in Napa Valley. The winery is famous for its Black Chicken Zinfandel, which has long been a family favorite. My parents first had this dry, red wine at one of their favorite restaurants (Bayard’s) in New York City, which sadly is no longer open. (I still dream about its souffles.) The sommelier at the restaurant, who now handles the wine list at Harry’s Cafe & Steakhouse as well as at several other restaurants in the city, raved about this wine. It remains one of my mom’s favorite wines and its great to be able to taste this wine together at the actual winery. adaptation of the 1993 “Without Remorse” book, which provided an origin story for Clark in a series that also features the popular Jack Ryan character. In addition to channeling the dark emotions experienced by Clark in the film, Jordan performed his own stunts, which were “pretty wild,” the actor said. “The stunts in it were just very specific to what I was doing,” Jordan, 34, explained. “When you do ‘Creed’ and projects like ‘Black Panther,’ the choreography is specific to the action as well, but when you throw in elements like vehicles and planes and a lot of guns, and you deal with underwater things and explosions, there are so many other elements that you have to think about, and prep of what you’re getting ready to do. I think out of the sheer scope of how many, I would say probably ‘Without Remorse’ is in a class on its own.” Jordan also produced “Without Remorse,” which

“I sincerely believe that it’s really important that a movie reflects the society we are living in.” Stefano Sollima
was directed by Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima. Sollima enjoyed providing a modernized take on the franchise. He notes Clark — who was played in previous movies by Willem Dafoe and Liev Schrieber — is white in the novels, while the supporting character of Greer, portrayed by Jodie Turner-Smith in his film, was formerly depicted as a man. “I sincerely believe that it’s really important that a movie reflects the society we are living in,” Sollima told The News. “To me, it was absolutely necessary to update the story (while) of course trying to be respectful of the story, of Tom Clancy.” Jordan also relished the chance to do something “fresh” with the series. “The universal stems from the specific,” Jordan said. “Telling it through a lens like myself, I feel like it changes the intensity and scope of
the situations that John finds himself in.” One reason Jordan was able to thrive in his depiction of Clark is that he has “this humanity that you can read through his eyes,” Sollima said. “Even when he’s doing something that’s really gritty, brutal and violent in search of his revenge ... we wanted to be able to know that he’s still a good guy, and what he’s doing is right,” Sollima explained. For Jordan, Clark is a character eager to defend what matters most to him. “John is somebody with a strong belief and faith in this country, in this system, in his family, and would do anything for them,” Jordan said. “I would say that’s the best way to describe him. He’s loyal and dedicated to the things that he loves, and he’s also a guy that you don’t want to cross.”

It’s a Belgian-style Witbier that uses a blend of wheat and European malts. It’s a perfect summer wheat beer. It’s incredibly thirst-quenching because it kicks off with the classic “bubblegum” (or banana/clove) flavors that you often find in great Hefeweizens, but this aspect is not overwhelming like it can be some wheat beers. The flavor also immediately dries out a bit, bringing forth a nice tart note. There’s a citrus
clean and makes you want more. One amusing side note for regular readers: Tom was incredibly grateful that Leadfoot was doing this and while he would have been happy with anything it brewed, he did have one request: Make it anything but an IPA. Of course, readers know that IPAs are my favorite style, so now I have to wonder if Tom and I are even really related! Anyway, this beer will go down incredibly easy on any day where it’s even slightly warm. But it’s especially made for hot days, in my opinion. A great beer for a great cause: Can’t ask for a better combination.
