CITY, CULTURE AND POLITICS Three generations of writers, intellectuals and journalists have joined us since 1979 to form a vibrant intellectual society. For more than 30 years Res Publica has had its our focus on culture, politics and society, influencing media, academia and political institutions. We believe in civil liberties with a stress on republican values and practices in public life. We are independent of any political parties in Poland or abroad. Several distinguished international authors have published or have been republished in our journal volumes and books, regardless of their ideological inclinations. Among them are Isaah Berlin, Hannah Arendt, Michael Oakeshott, Pierre Manent, Leszek Kołakowski, Aldonus Huxley, Bohumil Hrabal, Alasdair MacIntyre, Slavoj Zizek, Timothy Snyder, Ivan Krastev, Irving Kristol and many others. Since 2007 a third generation of Res Publicans has taken over, starting new programs besides print media. These include: ‣ Internet website www.res.publica.pl with original translations of top debates and issues (in cooperation with Eurozine- the European network of cultural journals and Free Speech Partnership Program); ‣ City DNA - Res Publica focus on city’s communities and planning; ‣ Central European Dictionary of Political Concepts - seminars, debates and book project focusing on Central Europe; ‣ public debates at Universities and culture institutions; ‣ book publishing and many other
BISLA BISLA is the first liberal arts college in Slovakia and the only one in Central Europe as an independent institution. It opened its gates to the first class of students in September 2006. BISLA was founded on a decade of prior experience, being the natural heir to the Society for Higher Learning (founded in 1996) – an ‘invisible college’ that graduated hundreds of exceptionally talented students from various fields of humanities, provided them additional education, tutorship and stipend.
CENTRAL EUROPEAN DICTIONARY OF POLITICAL CONCEPTS - CONCLUSIONS FROM SEMINARS IN 2010 • A companion rather than a dictionary! • The structure of work: • working groups / ”cluster editorial boards” consisting of 4-5 people • each broader topic covered by 4-5 essays focusing on more specific issues (approx. 10 pages
each) • essays within each section written by participants of a particular „cluster”, but also by authors invited by them to contribute to the volume • the work and output of „cluster editorial boards” co-ordinated by chief editors (Pawel Marczewski and Wojciech Przybylski)

HOW WE PLAN TO GET FROM CLUSTERS TO DICTIONARY OR COMPANION? • We work in cluster groups on selecting topics and themes for discussion as well as readings • We use WikiMedia tech, eg. www.spinnet.eu • We discuss them during seminar in June 2011 and on-line • At the conference in June 2011 we decide upon specific topics and authors • We commission work and wait for contributions • There is peer review and editorial work already in arrangement with a publishing house of
our choice • Publishing process begins • We ask “Big names” to write endorsements etc.
