EVIPNet REACH Uganda: Introduction for "Increasing Access to Skilled Birth Attendance" evidence brief for policy This EVIPNet evidence brief on ‘Increasing Access to Skilled Birth Attendance’ packages the best current knowledge on facility‐led interventions to reduce maternal mortality. Uganda ’s MMR is still high at 430 per 100,000 live births. The slow trend of annual decline is unlikely to meet the MDG target of 168 per 100,000 live births by 2015. The proportion of pregnant women delivering from public and private non‐profit facilities is still low at 34%. Increasing skilled birth attendance is desirable to reduce maternal mortality through provision of intrapartum care at first level or primary level health facilities, working with the private‐for‐profit sector and use of maternity waiting homes. 4 - EDITORIAL ARTICLES Evidence-based policymaking in global health - the payoffs and pitfalls
Yamey, G., & Feachem, R. (2011). Evidence‐based policymaking in global health – the payoffs. Evidence‐based medicine, 10, 3. “The good news is that evidence can matter. The bad news is that it often does not.” If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the clinicians and clinical epidemiologists who promoted evidence‐based medicine in the early 1990s should feel flattered. Evidence‐based medicine now has many imitators: from evidence‐based nursing, dentistry and public health through to evidence‐based social work and social interventions. To this growing list, we can now add evidence‐based global health policy, a ‘movement’ that is gaining increasing prominence.
5 - RELEVANT PUBLICATIONS Evidence Informed Policymaking in Education in Europe Gough, D., Tripney, J., Kenny, C., & Buk‐Berge, E. (2011). Evidence Informed Policymaking in Education in Europe. London: EPPI‐Centre, Social Science Research Unit, Institute of Education. The objective of the call for proposals was to develop knowledge brokerage mechanisms in the field of education and training and to strengthen the links between research, policy and practice. The EIPEE project contributed to this objective through discovering and exchanging information on the different types of brokerage activities and mechanisms that are used to link research evidence to policy in Europe and provided concrete tools to assist with the discussion and analysis of such information. The project’s broad aims were to raise awareness of evidence informed policy in education, create a network of those working in the area, and encourage the adaptation and testing out of new approaches and ideas in evidence informed policymaking in education.
