Message from the Southeast Regional Symposium Chair
W
elcome to the Southeast Regional Symposium on Reconnecting Vulnerable Communities Before, During and After a disaster sponsored by the Intercultural Cancer Council. Like America, Nashville is a diverse community. We come from different ethnic groups, religions, socioeconomic status, educational background, gender, family type, and physical condition. However in disasters we are all “just humans. We all have our humanity and need to survive at the highest possible level as a basic connector. There was a time when we only heard of disasters after the fact, by word of mouth unless they happened to us. However, the explosion of media and technology permits us to see disasters as they take place anywhere in the world. We do not know what form the next disaster will take: floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, terror attacks, nuclear accidents, chemical mishaps, or some yet unknown occurrence. We must work collectively to identify multiple resources right in reach in this community that can and must be harnessed for the common good. You are invited to help us frame and initiate an alliance to protect ourselves, our families, and fragile neighbors and friends. Let us come together, listen, think, share, plan and act. Right now we are all vulnerable. There is no reason to remain so.
David Jones Jr., EdD Minister, Schrader Lane Church of Christ Southeast Regional Symposium Chair Nashville, Tennessee
Message from the Meharry Site Principal Investigator
T
he needs of vulnerable populations are intensified by disasters. Medical and mental health requirements including prescriptive drugs may outweigh other pressing and critical needs such as employment, housing, and food security. Working together as a community, we can provide the necessary information and infrastructure to address the needs and concerns of vulnerable populations in Nashville before, during, and after a disaster. Through disaster preparation, training, and knowledge of community resources, individuals and families can return to stability as quickly as possible.
Patricia MatthewsJuarez, PhD Site Principal Investigator for the SECURE Gulf Coast Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs and Development Professor, Department of Family and Community Medicine Meharry Medical College Nashville, Tennessee

As a community, we must examine health disparities and social determinants and include our findings in a holistic approach that we develop in responding to the impact of a disaster on personal and community health. We look forward to starting the conversation about disaster planning for all communities and persons.
Message from the Baylor College of Medicine Principal Investigator
“W
hen in the courses of human events…” is of course associated with the declaration of independence. However, lately it is those events of “mother nature”, technology failures or those inhumane acts of terrorists that are getting our attention. Being prepared for the unexpected today is important for we have now come to understand that in reality the unexpected is really expected! What we may not know is the form, timing, and extent of an impending disaster. I have learned a tremendous amount from the resilience of individuals from all over the world. Congratulations to Nashville for bringing its communities together in a forum that can help ensure its people are better prepared, capable of responding and recovering when the unexpected happens.
Message from the Lead Principal Investigator “Speaking with one voice” is the motto of the Intercultural Cancer Council. We believe that through collaborations with such organizations and agencies that have come together today to discuss this highest relevant topic of disaster and and vulnerable populations that we can make a difference.
Lovell A. Jones, PhD Director, Center for Research on Minority Health Department of Health Disparities Research Professor, Department of Health Disparities Research Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX
Armin D. Weinberg, PhD Director, Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Research Center Site Principal Investigator for the SECURE Gulf Coast Professor, Department of Medicine Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX
I want to thank those of you who have elected to spend their time and energy to contribute to addressing the issue of how we should prepare for the next impending disaster. It’s not a matter of if, but a matter of when such disasters will occur. Meetings such as these will allow us to be better prepared. I want to extend my congratulations to the host institution, Meharry Medical College and SECURE, and the organizers of this meeting. I am sorry I can’t be with you, but know that I am there in spirit.

Message from the Intercultural Cancer Council Chair
W
elcome to the Intercultural Cancer Council Regional Symposium. This is a timely subject as we witness the recent devastation in the south, mid-west and northeast during recent tornadoes and floods and remember Katrina, Rita and other natural disasters. We are bringing together community-based, faith-based, the business community and disaster management organizations to encourage and mobilize the Nashville community to establish and sustain emergency disaster preparedness. “This meeting will connect people, community and Nashville service organizations to build knowledge, skills and resources from within the community to promote resiliency in the face of future disasters. The Intercultural Cancer Council (ICC) promotes policies, programs, partnerships and research to eliminate the unequal burden of cancer among racial and ethnic minorities and the medically underserved. We are pleased to join hands with our Nashville partners to ensure that within the holistic approach to disaster management. Thank you for scheduling time out of your busy schedule to participate and contribute to this most important program. We are appreciative of the collaborative efforts.
COL (Ret.) James E. Williams, Jr., MS, SPHR Chair, Intercultural Cancer Council (ICC) Chair, Pennsylvania Prostate Cancer Coalition (PPCC) Member, Patient Advocacy Committee, American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ASCOSOG)

he Intercultural Cancer Council (ICC) continues to advocate for the plight of people who do not have access to quality health care following a disaster, nor the knowledge on how to prepare themselves and family for disaster to meet their health needs. ICC works to inspire partners to join our efforts to make the elimination of health disparities a reality and to ensure the continuation of health care following a disaster. As we come together these next three days, I can only believe that these days will bring together all communities to begin the process of partnering and working together to bring about the change regardless of color, gender, age, ethnicity, religion or political affiliation on the matter of disaster preparedness and management. In the past, our communities have been resilient in the face of adversity and will continue to do so. We must begin to share our experiences and resources to overcome these difficulties we face in disaster.
We look forward to continuing to work with the Nashville community and hope that this symposium will help to mobilize vulnerable communities to meet the challenge of establishing and sustaining a community-based alliance on disaster preparedness.
