Great Beaches, Excellent Food
By Tim Johnson and Isabelle Labrosse
Is there anything better than a day at the beach? Warm sun, soft sand, and a light breeze – it’s your own little paradise. And to top it all off, sunset watching over dinner or drinks. Here are five spots that elevate beachfront dining (and drinking) to a new level.

1609 BAR & RESTAURANT, BERMUDES
Hanging over the Atlantic with sea breezes blowing through the open sides, this just might be the best place in Bermuda to enjoy a Dark ‘n’ Stormy, the island’s signature drink. Come for the drinks, stay past sunset, long into the evening, tucking into fresh oysters and calamari and fish tacos and sandwiches made from local wahoo. Find the 1609 Bar & Restaurant at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club.
TIKI TERRACE, HAWAII
It’s rare to find a farm on one of Maui’s most expensive beaches. But here on the island’s west side, set back from a busy boardwalk and the Pacific beyond, Executive Chef Thomas Muromoto oversees a plantation of banana trees, lemongrass, aloe and taro, one of Hawaii’s time-honoured staple crops. This homegrown culinary talent integrates these ingredients with others he sources on the island and recreates the cuisine of his childhood, including a traditional option that pairs local fish with ogo (a local seaweed), Maui onions, sweet purple potatoes, ginger, papaya and homemade poi, prepared and served in a pouch made of taro.
BAMBOO BLU, JAMAICA
Experience true oceanfront dining at Bamboo Blu, a hidden gem located directly on a private beach along the Caribbean Sea. This spectacular open-air venue offers a mouth-watering dining and cocktail menu complete with views like no other. Join locals and tourists alike for a taste of succulent dishes prepared by Executive Chef Osmond Brown – who previously worked in well-known hotels like Couples Resort – such as the coconut snapper, freshly caught grilled lobster, “Jamaica’s Jerkiest Chicken,” or their special bruschetta that combines saltfish and bammy, a traditional Jamaican cassava flatbread.
