(NC) - Carbon monoxide is called the “silent killer” because humans cannot see it, smell it, or taste it. And since exposure to this deadly gas mimics the flu, making it very hard to diagnose, it is little wonder that CO is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America.

“Like smoke alarms, it takes time for people to adopt new technologies even if they can save your life,” says Carol Heller, a home safety specialist with Kidde Canada. “It's an issue of education. Many Canadians think they don't need a carbon monoxide alarm because they have an electric stove. But they completely overlook the fact that they have a gas water heater, a gas furnace, a gas or wood fireplace, or a garage or carport attached to their house. All these are potential sources of CO.”

Natural gas and wood are fossil fuels that give off carbon monoxide as a byproduct when they are burned. So long as carbon monoxide is vented out of the home there is no danger. However if appliances or heating systems are not properly maintained, or chimneys and vents become blocked or cracked, that deadly CO can seep back into your home…and you won't even know it.

Go for a lightweight handheld model such as the PT-1090 from Brother, available at office supply stores or online at brother.ca The Four Container Method If you apply this simple system to getting organized, you'll save yourself lots of headaches. Get four boxes and label them as such: 1. Trash - this should include items that you don't need and are not in good enough condition to sell or donate. 2. Donate/Sell - think about the use someone else might get out of your unwanted items by donating to a charitable organization or selling them at a garage sale. An electronic labeller can also be a handy way to price-tag everything. 3. Store - put items in here that you cannot part with but do not need on a regular basis. Make an inventory of the items before you box them. Group similar items together and clearly label each box before you store it. 4. Keep - this should be your smallest category. These are items that you use on a regular basis. If the items in this box will not fit into your home without creating clutter, try to reassess if you really need them. A good rule to follow is if you have not used or worn it in over two years, then you do not need it.
