From laptops to accessories, the latest products in the market.

Khalid Wani from WD shares insights on My Cloud.

HP Jason McMillan from HP discusses the trends in the growing printer and peripheral market.

Microsoft Bruno Delamarre from Microsoft Gulf maps out insights on cloud solutions.

Epson Epson’s Ahmad Qasem discusses the opportunities in the Middle East market for ink tank printers.

Dell Rajat Rallan from Dell on the company’s tablet business.

We received positive feedback on the first issue of ‘The Shelf’ and we hope the publication will continue to inform the Middle East channel ecosystem on some of the key developments within the consumer IT landscape. Consumers today are buying more devices than ever before across the world. This is substantiated by the fact that the manufacturers selling these products have seen an increase in units shipped, even though the number of manufacturers have increased. That said, the same may not be the case in the margin-per-unit earned by manufacturers, distributors or resellers. Most IT products are standardised across the globe - a tablet bought in the United States will be the same if bought from China, India or the UAE, although these markets exhibit different consumer preferences. The question that arises is: does the IT industry need to pick up ideas from the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry, which has achieved enviable growth in revenue and shareholder returns over the past few decades? For example, the Coca-Cola Company recognized the Chinese preference for pulpier juices, and so launched Minute Maid Pulpy, which became the company’s first billion-dollar brand developed for an emerging market. However, the growth in the CPG industry is not just attributed to understanding local needs - the fact is that this understanding has led to an increase in acceptance of products from the CPG industry. Similar to the CPG industry, the products offered by the IT industry are deeply ingrained into an average consumer’s lifestyle. There may be unaddressed opportunities which could be unveiled through a more in-depth evaluation of consumers in the region. This could help develop a differentiated offering for consumers which, in turn, could help drive additional margins. We are always keen to differentiate our business and create new opportunities. A better understanding of consumer behaviour and market dynamics could help companies identify new opportunities and/or maximise existing ones. With this thought, we hope you will enjoy reading this issue of ‘The Shelf’. Yours Sincerely Raj Shankar Managing Director, Redington Gulf

How has the launch of My Cloud helped grow the business in the region? Today’s consumers are more educated than in years gone, are increasingly mobile and rely on multiple computing devices to create and consume content. For these consumers, internal storage or direct attached storage (DAS) devices (USB/Firewire for example) are unable to fully service their needs. With the My Cloud family of products a consumer is able to easily centralize data on a single storage point, he can upload data directly to the device even while on the move and, can access all of this data from any of his computing devices. Given the positive reviews by regional press, powerful features and ease of use, the acceptance of the My Cloud product family by regional consumers has been healthy, which has positively impacted our overall business numbers in the region.

www.redingtonmea.com

With security threats increasing, what kind of measures do you have in place? Generally speaking, personal cloud storage can be considered safer than web-based cloud services, be it public or private clouds. Nefarious individuals prefer to target large data repositories (such as public or private clouds) that are likely to contain the personal data of hundreds of thousands of users. A single user or even a family’s personal cloud storage is of, comparatively, little interest. WD has, nevertheless, taken a number of steps to ensure that the personal cloud storage offered by the My Cloud product family is protected using thoroughly up-to-date security techniques. At the same time we’ve also made sure that any user, regardless of his technical know-how can securely take full advantage of the My Cloud’s broad features. How is the product different from similar solutions offered by competitors? With the My Cloud product family WD focused on delivering a powerful yet seamless user experience. Any user can purchase a My Cloud and begin using it, regardless of his or her level of IT knowledge. As the world’s largest

“Personal cloud storage is poised to be the storage option of choice for the foreseeable future.”

storage provider and given the immense experience garnered from having launched numerous personal storage products over the years, we’ve been able to design and produce a product that fully addresses the needs of today’s consumers. As an example, our My Cloud app not only allows end users to access and upload data from remote locations but it is also able to easily integrate with popular cloudbased services such as DropBox and SkyDrive (soon to be known as OneDrive). Thanks to features like this, there’s no limit to what an end user can do with a My Cloud. Cloud solutions are still relatively new to the region, with only a handful of players seriously implementing it. Is there a huge demand for personal cloud storage in the region in such a scenario? Absolutely! Today’s consumers are more informed and are no longer purchasing vanilla storage devices but rather is looking for a product that can fully address their digital needs; this includes remote access to data and OS-independent access. As a result of these needs, the personal cloud storage segment has been growing steadily in recent years and is

projected to continue for the foreseeable future. How do you see this business evolving in the next few years? Personal cloud storage is poised to be the storage option of choice for the foreseeable future. Consumers who started their personal cloud journey with a My Cloud may look at investing into more advanced personal cloud storage solutions that give them even higher storage capacities coupled with data redundancy. The My Cloud EX4, as an example, allows users to have up to 16TB of personal cloud storage but if data redundancy is a concern, the user can easily configure the device to run in RAID 5, which while reducing the overall storage capacity (since some capacity is used for parity information) provides data redundancy. So, in case of a single drive failure, the user won’t lose his data and will, rather, be able to rebuild his My Cloud EX4’s RAID array with ease. What are your business plans for 2014? In the coming months we’ll continue delivering the best and most exciting products and solutions to end users, while forging long term, mutually beneficial relationships with our partners.

HP

Expanding into new horizons The Shelf meets up with Jason McMillan, Channel Manager, HP to understand the trends in the growing printer and peripheral market.

How has the printer and peripheral market evolved over the last two years? The printer and peripheral market in the Middle East region has continued to deliver leading results and our market share has been strong throughout CY13, our share has remained >57% across all print devices. If you consider Ink on its own our share is >60% and we continue to innovate with the introduction of the world’s fastest desktop printer, the OfficeJet X series, in retail. And in the consumer market, the innovation of Ink Advantage has clearly differentiated HP from our competitors and delivers real value to the consumer with double (2x) the amount of pages per cartridge. The Laser market share has been consistently above 55% share and our innovations in the MFP market with a completely new lineup has enabled us to 12

gain share. The channel MPS (managed print services) program is delivering good results and our channel partners are specializing their resources with HP. What kind of emerging trends can we expect over the next few years in this space? The innovation in the printing and peripheral market is immense, new ink technology with the officeJet X-series page wide arrays. This new technology allows our new printer to be able to print up to speeds of 70ppm in full colour. The cost per page is lower than laser and the power consumption truly in line with green computing! Flow MFP differentiates HP in the world of Big Data and document management. How is the company leveraging these trends? Our digital worlds are growing with tremendous speed. This creates business challenges and forces organizations to rethink how they interact and manage the proliferation of data. In this new reality, businesses need a technology partner who can help them navigate these new challenges allowing them to focus on their core business. HP is helping them do just that with innovations like our HP Flow MFPs. These devices are smarter than the average printer, providing both an on-and-off-ramp to and from the cloud to help organizations store, manage and organize their information. In terms of investments, which are your key areas? The key area of investment for our channel is in the print solutions segment and being able to sell print services in a variety of flavours. Manage print services through our channel partners is a very lucrative and strategic business model. It allows the partner to www.redingtonmea.com

leverage the broad portfolio of HP’s lineup, financial services capabilities through HP financial services in key selected countries and the technical capabilities of HP’s services organization. This business builds future annuity income for our channel and stickiness to our customers for the future. Managed Print Services and enterprise printing solutions will also be business focus for 2014. HP plans to make its debut in 3D printing market this year. What kind of scope do you see in this region? The 3D printing market is showing an annual growth rate of plus 27% over the last three years. Worldwide sales of 3D printers and services in 2012 was $2.2B and expected to reach $10.8B by 2021. Is the laser printer market growing faster than inkjet? The laser market in the Middle East has traditionally been very strong and with the elimination of certain competitors from the Inkjet business their dependency on Laser is far higher. At HP we continue to innovate and bring to market new products and technology in both Ink and Laser. Ink remains the most cost effective solution for printing in the mid to low monthly print volume(MPV) segment. The cost per page of a clour printed page in inkjet is far lower than laser and the associated power consumption is significantly lower with inkjet technology, these savings and TCO factors should be clear in the minds of the consumer and business decision makers. The medium size enterprise and printing solutions for higher monthly print volumes will be better served by laser technology and we have numerous new devices to dominate in this market.

“ The key area of investment for our channel is in the print solutions segment and being able to sell print services in a variety of flavours.”

How will your mobile print solutions transform the way businesses function? How has the market responded to these solutions? HP is the market leader in mobile print solutions with our ability to print from anywhere or any device. HP ePrint, airPrint, wireless, wireless direct, tap-to-print and all mobile solutions available from HP. ePrint and airPrint is standard in almost all of our devices from the entry level ink advantage series to the highest end MFP. Mobility is one of the strategic pillars for HP. For printing this means that there is a strong emphasis on making it easy to print from any mobile device. We will continue to innovate in the mobility space to provide expanded customer choice and flexibility. From established solutions like HP ePrint Enterprise to new offerings like the HP Mobile Print Accessory, we are focused on increasing business productivity by helping today’s organizations work when, where and how they want. Which of your new products are best-selling in the region? The HP print portfolio is the most extensive in the industry packed with successful products and technology. In the consumer/SOHO segment we have great success with Ink Advantage and the OfficeJet series. Enterprise and the mid-market segment have been very successful with our MFP range of products while leveraging our strong position in the single function and office laser devices. Anything else you would like to add? HP Flow CM Professional is an easy-touse, cloud-based solution designed to help businesses securely store and access information for better collaboration.

Epson

Go-getter Epson’s Channel Sales Manager, Ahmad Qasem shares with The Shelf the opportunities in the Middle East market for ink tank printers and more.

It’s almost a year since the ink tank printers were launched. How has the market responded? When we launched this product last year, we had initially expected a slow response from our target markets as it was a totally new concept that needed more market awareness. However, the response picked up and we are now enjoying good feedback from this product--being the only solution offering in ultra-low print. In terms of cost, these ink tank printers does not need frequent ink refilling as the first refill is required after printing 12,000 pages. These printers are certified green products that do not compromise on the quality of the output. What kind of opportunities are present in the region for ink tank printers? These ink tank printers can be positioned as a direct replacement for all types of inkjet and mainstream laser printers, which makes these devices ideal for home users and small to large offices. There is also a special ITS printer that has been specifically designed for photographers and photo enthusiasts.

Dell

Keeping a tab The Shelf speaks to Rajat Rallan, Senior Client Merchandising Manager, Dell about the company’s tablet business.

Dell previously had a line of smartphones named Venue and Venue Pro, why are you reusing a brand name that didn’t do well in the past for the new tablets? Dell was in the smartphone business for a short period of time with products named Venue and Venue Pro. While they weren’t considered to be commercial successes, customers tested well with it. We feel that the Venue name can grow to resonate with customers and likewise fit in with the brand ethos. The definition of Venue is ‘the place where something happens’, which reflects how tablets are essential companions for people and how they connect and share experiences with others. And going forward, the Venue brand will be only for tablets. Dell had said that they were committed to the Windows 8 platform, what changed now? Nothing has changed. We are always evaluating different operating systems to provide the best experience for our customers. Our belief is that 26

our products should be ‘open’, and we have a long-standing commitment to offering customers OS diversity and we will continue to seek and partner with companies that reinforce and support our vision. Is Dell now offering Android because it hasn’t seen a strong adoption for Windows 8 tablets? The Windows 8 platform provides tremendous opportunity for customers to use a device that can be brought into the enterprise seamlessly with the same manageability and security as on a corporate laptop. It also allows customers to have a tablet with full Microsoft Office, and to easily share content across devices with the same familiar user interface. That being said, some customers prefer a tablet primarily for media consumption and want to have access to hundreds of thousands of apps, music and videos through Google Play. We are looking at expanding our product offering and providing new experiences for our customers through our partners and innovative solutions.

Dell had Android tablets in the past with its Streak line, which were not successful. How does Dell plan to be successful this time around with the new Android tablets? Dell has a strong tablet strategy in place that meets the needs of our home and business customers. We have developed a range of tablets that will enable people to select the one that best suits their needs – whether for business, for personal use, or for a bit of both. In the time since we first launched the Streak tablet, we’ve done a lot of learning and listening to what our customers are looking for, and we believe we have a competitive tablet offering that will resonate with our customers. Does the company see higher tablet growth potential in the consumer or enterprise space? We see interest in tablets in both the commercial and consumer markets and we will continue to deliver the best solutions for all of our customers. IT departments are increasingly adopting a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) model for tablets due to strong demand from employees. Our goal is to offer products, services and solutions that maximize end user productivity and IT control and deliver the best overall experience on the market. Can Dell truly compete against the rise of non-traditional players who are the perceived leaders in the tablet space namely, Amazon, Google and even Barnes & Noble? Our focus extends beyond pure content consumption. We are confident in our ability to www.redingtonmea.com

provide a unique product that offers differentiated features from other participants in the tablet space. Our mobility portfolio, including integrated mobility solutions, bridges the gap between systems designed solely for personal or business use. The leaders in the tablet space are creating an ecosystem that binds hardware with software, ensuring seamless interoperability. What is Dell doing in this regard? Dell’s commercial offering is designed to stand up to the rigorous demands of business computing, integrate seamlessly into existing IT environments and offer security and manageability. Our key differentiator is the ability to offer a wide variety of mobility solutions – from the device to mobile security solutions to custom application deployment services. IDC recently published a report highlighting the decline of PC sales worldwide. Is Dell worried that tablets will cannibalize its core PC business? Dell believes tablets are complementary (+1) devices for enterprise, small and medium business users, and even consumers who seek an ecosystem of devices to create and consume personal and professional content. We believe that more and more devices will come on to a corporation’s network and the profile and number of those devices will have different footprints and usage models (i.e. consumption vs. creation of data).

“Dell’s commercial offering is designed to stand up to the rigorous demands of business computing, integrate seamlessly into existing IT environments”

and form factors to continue to change. There will still be a need for ‘static’ computing on desktops, but there will be a real need for mobile devices. Wearable tech is an interesting development and we’re investigating it closely, as with other emerging industry trends. Our first priority is to meet our customers’ varying needs and provide them with the best experience possible today and in the future. How is the retail share trend after distribution exclusivity with Redington? We have full confidence in Redington’s abilities to excel in the retail business in the Middle East from an end-to-end perspective. We are seeing a great value in our partnership, from planning to execution, which is very evident from recent GFK reporting in the UAE. For example in the Gitex month of October 2013, Dell’s retail market share went north of 20%, which proves that our overall go-to-market strategy is working very well.

Final take

point of view Today, tablets, smartphones and accessories are the most visible and talked about product categories in the channel and end-user space. This time, I would like to bring your attention to a category that is usually never in the limelight—Printers. This current issue of ‘The Shelf’ tries to focus more on printers by inviting participation from a couple of vendors who manufacture printers. For the past six quarters, Redington has seen a consistent upswing in the shipment of printers in the Middle East market, which has been experiencing an overall decline. In stark contrast to the global trend, the market for printers and consumables is on a rebound in the region, thanks to robust demand from the commercial sector. Besides, technology advances have helped bring down the prices of high quality printers to a point where most SOHO users can now afford an excellent printer. As far as mainstream consumers are concerned, print quality is the most key attribute they look for while buying a printer. As per IDC, the region is a fertile ground for technologies such as multifunction printers and digital copiers. The research firm says it’s also a sustainable market with growing number of vendors investing in managed print services and document solutions. For Redington in the Middle East, the printer category has been a consistent performer, something the channel partners should pay close to attention to, as this is still a business that provides a consistent opportunity. We would love to receive feedback from our partners on the printer business, do write to us at sales.volume@redingtongulf.com to share your views and thoughts.
