HP
Leading the pack Pawel Miszkiewicz, Printing HW Category Manager, Imaging & Printing, PPS, HP Middle East, sheds light on print security trends and measures to stay proactive.
What are the key market trends in IT security in the printing segment? Have you ever sent a document to the printer, and then forgotten to pick it up until hours later? Internal data breaches are the most frequent type of breaches for businesses, as confidential information is often left sitting on a printer. A recent study found that nearly 90 percent of enterprises have suffered at least one data loss through unsecured printing. IT security spending continues to grow, as regulatory fines are enforced and security breaches are on the rise across all industry. As the cost for a single data breach is significant (on average USD 5.4 M), the increase in IT spending are being justified, especially since the threat is real and 65 percent of these threats are actually internal.

Isn’t print security neglected by companies in the region? Most companies have taken limited actions when it comes to developing a comprehensive print security policy. You invest in several security measures for your PCs like network security, access controls, monitoring and management, system updates such as BIOS and operating systems, device security or data protection. Network printers and MFPs pose the same risks as a PC on the network and need all these similar security measures put in place. Plus they introduce additional risk in data protection and document security. Let’s go one by one. First point network security - data in transit, potential entry point to network or cloud access. Second point access controls - lack of access controls can lead to unauthorized use or abuse of devices, functions, and data. As for a PC, monitoring and management is equally important - not monitoring print fleet security leads to non-compliance to corporate policies or industry regulations, outdated firmware means missing security patches. Next point will be device security - device or hard disk theft can lead to loss of sensitive data thus data protection - data on hard disk, data-in-transit (secure email, capture and route, secure print or mobile print) will be another risk. Last point is document security, which creates additional risk

around the physical document. XTOUCH is a recent player to the Middle East market, how do you stack up against competition, especially when you consider the extremely crowded smart devices segment? Yes, XTOUCH is a very young brand and that’s where our strengths are. We are young, energetic and passionate about our brand. There are many brands available in the market and the competition is fierce, however, the smartphone market is growing at a healthy rate worldwide, which means there is room to accommodate more brands. We are confident that with the kind of

trendy, feature-rich, cost-competitive and value for money smart devices we offer, we have created our own niche in the market and acceptability has increased over the period of time. We will continue to offer better user experience to our existing and new customers. What are the opportunities present in this market? There are infinite opportunities present, especially in emerging markets. The CAGR for smartphone has been over 30 percent in EMEA region, which is our focus market. We are very proud to be in Dubai as we do not sell in China. We design our products according to the market requirements in EMEA region. In tablets, our growth has been spectacular. We have been recognized as top five brands in the UAE market by recent IDC report. We are upbeat about the market and ready to seize any opportunities. Though we are a young brand, our growth has been impressive - we have grown over 820 percent over the last three years. What is your go-to-market strategy for the region? We have been working on pull and push strategy together with a right kind of marketing mix for uniform and consistent communications. We have

been increasing our footprints in the region and expanding our products offering. In the UAE, the power retailers are dominant players while in other GCC countries, independent retailers are dominating the markets. We are addressing both the channels in a proper manner. There has been a demand shift from feature phone to entry level smartphone with all social media enablement and we are working hard to keep offering better products in this segment as well as multimedia focused large screen smartphones that are 5-inch and above. What plans can the regional channel partners expect from XTOUCH in 2015? The regional channel partners can expect a better product mix and competitive prices. We are redefining our product portfolio with respect to all our products. We will be launching new series of smart devices in coming months. Will you continue to focus on the value segment? Yes, we will continue to focus on the value segment. We kind of own that segment with our product offering. But for us, value doesn’t mean rock bottom price rather we offer products, which means better specifications with better pricing. However, it doesn’t mean that we will not be offering high end products.
You have begun operations in Africa earlier in the year, could you elaborate on your expansion strategy? Africa is core to our market development strategy. We already have offices in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. We are reaching out to all corners of Africa from Egypt in the north, Nigeria in the west, Kenya in the east and South Africa in the south. In most of the region, we are working with our esteemed partner, Redington, for the distribution. Our products are sold in many countries in Africa not only in the four countries mentioned here. Can you comment on the evolving regional channel landscape? Channel landscape in the region is evolving continuously. Not many years ago, independent retailers and mom-and-pop stores were the dominant players in the market. Now some of them have developed into organized retails with multiple branches. In the UAE, organized retail is stronger that unorganized one while in some other GCC countries, unorganized retail continue to be dominant. Africa has distinct market dynamics, which greatly varies from country to country. Some of the larger countries show the growth of power retailers while other are still traditional markets.

Sustaining success
is maintaining client relationships and never giving our clients a reason to complain. That is actually a lot tougher than it sounds, because it involves customer service, a fast and efficient team, pricing and availability at all times.
Sachin Gehani, Director, Accent Office Supplies, shares market strategies and business focus for 2015.
Are there any consumer trends that are governing the sector? The export sector has been diminishing more and more and it appears that the corporate sector is becoming more powerful. This is from the clients’ side. From a suppliers’ perspective, power retailers and e-commerce have picked up huge momentum. In order for resellers to survive, we must pull up our socks and provide value-added services.
Can you share some highlights at Accent Office supplies for 2014? Accent won the partner of the year award from Canon Middle East due to the outstanding efforts in selling a wide variety of Canon products over the last financial year. Apart from this, Accent was also awarded a ‘sales revenue award’ from APC. These awards reflect Accent’s vision to grow in a variety of fields and constantly endeavour to find new revenue streams, and excel in them.
Going forward, what is your business focus? Growth, growth and growth. A huge effort in marketing and a huge investment in newer and better products to generate higher revenue and margins will be our focus. However, it should be said here that this is not easy to achieve. One must constantly be on their toes at all times.
How do you plan to expand your business in 2015? Our growth model is simple – to excel in whatever we put our hands into. There is a dedicated team to look after every region and all clients’ requirements. In 2015, we plan to add agencies for certain brands that we are currently working on as well as to open branches in other key countries. The process is already ongoing but the turnaround time is taking a bit longer than expected. All that should be ironed out and we should be ready to go in 2015. What are some recent market initiatives that you have undertaken? Participating in GITEX every year is a given. Besides that, we also participate in a number of exhibitions overseas to increase our market presence. We also undertake a number of branding initiative to improve our brand value. Can you discuss your product portfolio? Broadly it includes printers, printer consumables,
www.redingtonmea.com
notebooks, desktops, LEDs and accessories. However, we are constantly evolving and still treat ourselves as a fairly young company. We are always looking for new products and initiatives to drive ourselves forward. What is your market strategy? Client relationships have always been the key to our success. Yes, pricing and product range are also important. However, what is more important than that
“Client relationships have always been the key to our success. “
Can you discuss the support Redington has given you? Redington has been phenomenal. What sets Redington apart is the wide product and brand portfolio, also having dedicated account managers for each brand is a big plus. I must commend one of Redington’s strategies – their policy of market visits. Each week, at least one representative from Redington personally visits the entire market to get a feel of what market trends are there at the moment. This helps Redington stay ahead of the game as compared to other distributors. Anything else you would like to add? Our motto: Come, partner with us, and you will experience first-hand, what it’s like to deal with true professionals.

Final take
All that begins well‌ Having commenced the year on a positive note, the regional market is well down recovery road from the economic upheaval it experienced a few years ago. However, contrary to expectations, the latter part of the year was relatively quiet. While the retail sector has performed exceptionally well this year, we have failed to see a similar sense of buoyancy in the regional channel space. Over the last one year, the Middle East channel has experienced several swings in fortune with market volatility and protracted weak demand impacting business and the industry on the whole. A silver lining for the channel amid a weak IT spending environment has been strong growth in demand for product categories such as tablets and smartphones. What has fueled growth in the devices market is innovation combined with inspiring form factors. A case in point is hybrid devices that are both laptops and tablets in one, which grabbed consumer attention. It might only be a fraction of the overall mobility product market, but it is still a lucrative market that offers very healthy margins. Over the year, we have seen the IT product industry shifting the focus more towards mobility products, which was initially dominated by a few large brands, and we expect the demand to be robust next year as well. This demand is being driven by the independent retail channel and the growing acceptance of mobility solutions within verticals such as education and hospitality. We foresee more and more industries following suit as they adopt mobile computing to satisfy the evolving user demands and this ‘mobile-defined world’ spells good sales opportunities for partners. At Redington Gulf, this has been an eventful year. We have had our biggest ever presence at GITEX and clocked a year-onyear growth at both the editions of the show. The holiday season will help us to close the year on a high note and now with the Dubai Shopping Festival around the corner, we are bullish that the market sentiment will remain positive.
Sukhil Nair, Vice President - Systems Group , Redington Gulf
We look forward to continuing our relationship with our vendor and channel partners into 2015 and will also focus on expanding our portfolio. Wish you a great year-end and a prosperous 2015.
