ABOUT COSTFORD The Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Development (COSTFORD), is a nonprofit organisation founded in 1985 by C. Achutha Menon, Kerala’s former Chief Minister; K.N. Raj, Economist and former Chairman of the Centre for Development Studies (CDS); Laurie Baker, Master Architect; and T.R. Chandra Dutt, Social Activist. COSTFORD is dedicated to changing the social, economic, and political position of marginalised and disadvantaged groups in society. In the mid-1980s, COSTFORD focused heavily on improvement of housing and made significant gains in providing alternative philosophy and technologies for providing cost-effective, energy efficient, and more appropriate housing for culture and climate for all income groups. By the late 1990s, COSTFORD, with the Main Office in Thrissur taking the lead at the District Centre level, embarked upon second generation programmes in extending assistance to weaker sections of society. By 1997, studies indicated attention needed to be focused on empowerment of women. For example, women were not properly compensated for their work in the home and often lacking skills to earn income outside the home. The economic potential of women needed to be increased with emphasis on education, skill-based training, and support services addressing gender related challenges in society. Kerala is famous for modeling positive results in education and health care, through decentralised governing strategies and stemming the flow of the rural poor to urban slums through rural enhancement programmes. The State’s long history of enlightened society building is a model for less overdeveloped societies and a signal to overconsumptive societies about what is possible with relatively modest means. In its capacity as an NGO, COSTFORD primarily seeks to change the social, economic, and political position of the marginalised and disadvantages groups in society. To this end, COSTFORD draws on the expertise and experience of a spectrum of talent in serving in an advocacy capacity relating to societal challenges, helping empower poor communities, conducting research and development activities, assisting with local level development and planning, promoting the transfer of appropriate technology, assisting with human resource development, conducting studies relating to a range of societal concerns, disseminating information, and serving in a consultancy capacity.

BUILDING TECHNOLOGY COSTFORD constructions are the results of scientific and rational study of the pre-existing techniques and approaches of constructions. With each technique used, utmost priority is given to strength and then to its appropriate application based on the property of the material. We truly believe in the honesty of use of material and not masking it again with texture or color of other materials, which simply does no justice, either to itself or to the material it has engulfed. Our first line of action still remains, saving energy, materials, and cost by using less energy-intense materials and more indigenous materials, which, apart from probably being cheaper, are environmentally more responsible. Technical innovations also include mud stabilizers, combination mortars, bamboo reinforced surface beams, arch designs, and SUBO septic tanks.

Lawrence Wilfred “Laurie” Baker (2 March 1917 – 1 April 2007) was a British-born Indian architect, renowned for his initiatives in cost-effective energy-efficient architecture and designs that maximized space, ventilation and light and maintained an uncluttered yet striking aesthetic sensibility. He was a pioneer of sustainable architecture as well as organic architecture, incorporating in his designs even in the late 1960s, concepts such as rain-water harvesting, minimizing usage of energy-inefficient building materials, minimizing damage to the building site and seamlessly merging with the surroundings. Due to his social and humanitarian efforts to bring architecture and design to the common man, his honest use of materials, his belief in simplicity in design and in life, and his staunch Quaker belief in non-violence, he has been called the “Gandhi of architecture”

SETOUT AND EXCAVATION

FOUNDATION AND RUBBLE WORK

1. Site clearance 2. Obtain setout plan 3. Get the neccessary equipments ready (Steel rods, hammer, rope, tape, marking tools) 4. Setout usually starts from southwest of the site. 5. By using pythogoras theorem, we will mark the perpendicular walls. 6. Setout the baseline and mark it, baseline is always marked outside. Mark the baseline with mortar and waste bricks. 7. All the inner walls are to be marked to the center of walls and outer walls to the outer edge of walls. 8. Bathroom walls and partition walls do not need earthwork, plinth belt provided for its support. 9. Avoid touching the setout ropes at the junction to maintain accuracy and also ensure all the ropes should be horizontal. 10. Once the setout is done, the excavation is done manually or mechanically. 11. While excavating mechanically the bucket of JCB should be 11/2 bucket to achieve 0.45m width rubble work. 12. The foundation is properly made into shape by labors and then the foundation works starts.

Small stones are then used to fill the gap between them.

RAT TRAP BOND 1. This double wall technique uses bricks on edge with a cross brick between each and produces a 9 inch thick wall with an insulating air cavity in between. 2. This technique reduces the number of bricks required by 25%, thereby reducing material used, including mortar (1:8 mix), and overall cost. 3. Rat-trap technique is equal to the strength of a solid 9-inch wall in either Flemish or English bond. 4. For constructing the walls the setout for the walls are done, then bricks are placed using mortar. After placing one brick of the second layer the verticalityis checked. 5. The same procedure id repeated and for neat finsish line point and patch point is done.

FILLER SLAB 1. This is based on the principle that for a simply supported roof, the upper part of the slab is subjected to compressive forces and the lower part of the slab experience tensile forces. 2. Concrete is very good on withstanding compressive forces and steel bears the load due to the tensile forces, thus the lower tensile region of the slab does not need any concrete except for holding the steel reinforecements together. 3. Lightweight, inexpensive materials such as lowgrade Mangalore tiles, bricks, coconut shells, glass bottles, etc. are used as filler materials in filler slabs to replace the redundant concrete in tension zones. 4. These materials are laid in the grids of steel reinforcement rods (6mm or 8mm dia.), and concreting is done over them. The concrete mix used is 1:2:4. 5. The grid size depends upon the design, span, and the material used. For Mangalore tiles (size 23cm by 40cm), the grid size is 33cm by 50cm. The slab thickness is 10 centimeters. 6. This technique saves energy-consuming concrete. Roofs and intermediate floors account for 20-25% of the total cost of the house. This roofing costs 30-35% less than conventionally used concrete roofing. 7. This technique also reduces the unwanted dead load of roofing. Compared to other roofing systems, it is thermally comfortable and has no health hazards. LBC training filler slab demonstration

BAMBOO CONSTRUCTION 1. For most parts of the India, bamboo is a locally available material and has been used as building material for centuries. It can be easily grown and is one of the cheapest construction materials. 2. A good bamboo cut into strips has the tensile strength almost equal to that of steel. It is used for reinforcement, shuttering, scaffolding, roofing, piles, filler material and much more. 3. Bamboo in lime concrete can be used for foundations, especially in the sandy areas along the seacoast. It is resistant to seawater and remains intact whereas other foundations will crack with shifting sands. 4. For places where stones and bricks are not available, foundation for mud walls can be of moist soil with layers of split bamboo reinforcement inserted. However it needs experience to know about the quality of the bamboo and it is difficult to calculate the exact strength of slabs with bamboo reinforcements. BOTTLE WORK 1. The caps of the bottles are thrown away, bottles are then cleaned and dried properly before starting the bottle work. 2. The mould is made of appropriate dimensions of the opening using wooden planks. The mould is 2cm smaller from all the sides than the opening size so as to place mortar and fix this mould. 3. Then M-sand is laid in the mould then the glass bottles are placed according to the design. 4. Steel rods are placed in between the gaps of the bottle and then mortar is laid such that the bottle is seen after the neck portion of the bottle. 5. Once the mortar gets dried partially the edges are cleaned and stains of mortar on the bottle is also cleaned using brush and proper finished surface is achieved. 6. As the mortar gets dried completely the bottle work is then fixed in the opening using mortar.
