LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

shelter are a wonderful place to focus that attention this time of year. Attribute it to politics or what have you, it seems our world is in dire need of this personal attention. The kind that delivers dinner to that neighbor in need, pays for a stranger’s coffee during the morning rush or just makes a promise to give a wide-eyed smile to each person you meet today.

One way you can give back is by volunteering with Meals on Wheels of Tampa (mowtampa. org). From our family here at Resident Magazine to yours near and far, may your Turkey Day be blessed, your feast plentiful and your pants ever-stretching!

T

he month of Giving Thanks is upon us once again, a tradition imparted by President Lincoln more than 150 years ago as a celebratory day of “ humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged.”

It’s often difficult to pull ourselves away from the ever intriguing attachment of social media or the relentless pull of the office. Although I highly suspect this was not among Mr. Lincoln’s intentions at the time, what better time to set aside that list of obligations for just a bit, and focus our sights on those physically in front of us? Family, friends or that line of strangers in need down at your local homeless

ven people who are financially secure can fall into money traps that put their future at risk, or miss out on opportunities to further strengthen their financial position. Here are several commonmistakes made by financially accomplished people — along with a few tips to counteract them. Overspending. You’ve worked hard to get where you are. Don’t abandon the budgeting strategies that helped you come this far. Give your discretionary fund a boost if you must, but continue to keep an eye on what you spend each month. You can easily fall behind in your financial goals by consistently overspending in small amounts, which add up to large sums over time. Not having an emergency fund. If you earn a healthy sum each month and have

money set aside in investments, you may not think you need other savings. However, having a workplace plan (like a 401(k) or 403(b) plan) or an IRA is not an emergency fund. Withdrawing funds earmarked for retirement prematurely can incur costly tax penalties, and make you lose out on potential future earnings. Instead, store away three- tosix months’ worth of income in liquid savings to provide a cushion in the event of job loss, natural disaster, illness or another unexpected event.

your retirement savings and want to set aside funds for your budding student, be strategic and diligent about creating a plan to achieve both goals. Being underinsured. Take a critical look at what you own. How easily could you replace those items if an unexpected event occurs? Standard policies may not cover as much as you think, especially if you’ve recently upgraded your home or added to your art collection. Check in with your insurance agent and upgrade your coverage as needed. If you live in an area prone to severe weather, you

Failing to diversify. You heard it a million times growing up — don’t put all your eggs in one basket. If your money is tied up in your home, or if your investments are overor under-weighted in one sector of the market, you may be on risky ground. Work with your financial advisor to evaluate your level of diversification within the context of your goals. Prioritizing saving for college over retirement. As the cost of a four-year degree in the U.S. continues to rise, it may be tempting to put your child’s tuition ahead of your own future. Yet, boosting your retirement savings should take priority. Your child has an array of options to finance college tuition, including job earnings, merit-based scholarships, and various loan options. When you retire, you simply won’t have access to these external sources of funding if your retirement savings come up short. Happy Aromatherapy Month

A

romatherapy is a century old homeopathic practice used to remedy ailments through smell, skin absorbing, and digesting all natural plant extracts. Whether you’re suffering from heartburn, headaches or hangovers, aromatherapy can solve it naturally. When I first was exposed to aromatherapy I had a young child with trouble sleeping. I used a lavender and jojoba oil blend and was so surprised when it worked! Why aren't other people using this I wondered? Little did I know, it was due to the storm of companies that rushed in and grabbed the market. I tried just about every brand and quickly discovered they were not created equal. Some burned my skin while others left me nauseated. I’m not an aromatherapist knew very little on the proper mixing ratios. Almost losing hope I fell upon an amazing company, they stand behind their product and in my opinion, have the best oils, remedies and all natural organic products. I do not work for this company so I consider myself a non-bias promoter and anything that can make you feel better naturally I’m all for. I contacted one of my doTERRA reps for these amazing suggestions, here are a few quick remedies you can use for everyday

Stress Relief

The warm, woody aroma of Balance, the doTERRA grounding blend, creates a sense of calm and wellbeing. Spruce, one of the oils in Balance, used by Native Americans for spiritual reasons and is still used today to bring harmony to busy lives. Ho Wood, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile relax the body, while Frankincense supports an overall appearance of well being.

Sleep doTERRA Serenity Restful Blend has a calming and relaxing aroma that provides a unique experience. This perfectly balanced, tranquil blend can be felt immediately, transporting the user to a state of blissful repose to lessen feelings of tension and calm emotions, and support a restful sleep when used aromatically. Apply one to two drops to the hands and inhale throughout the day to help reduce worry from life’s daily stressors, or diffuse at night to help quiet a restless baby or child. The addition of Cedarwood, Ho Wood, and Vetiver essential oils gives doTERRA Serenity a grounding aroma that calms the mind and soothes the senses.

Hot Flashes

Clary Calm blend of essential oils provides a soothing and calming effect and works at balancing hormones for both men and women. A topical blend of Clary Sage, Lavender, Bergamot, Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Fennel, Carrot Seed, Palmarosa, and Vitex, ClaryCalm provides a cooling effect to the skin and helps balance emotions. ClaryCalm utilizes FCF (furnaocoumarinfree) Bergamot essentail oil to prevent sun sensitivity. These are just a very few remedies. There are so much more to know. t 19 years old, Steve Hopper was just one year into a ten year prison sentence and it was time for lights-out. “There I was, in this pitch black cell, alone. This particular night when that steel door slammed shut at 9:00 pm, the weight of the world just came crashing in on me. I don't really know why it happened on this night as opposed to others but I was consumed by emotion. Every emotion you can imagine...helplessness, hopelessness, remorse, fear, regret... “ Steve remembers, “all of it, I crouched down in the corner of my cell, pulled my knees to my chest and just cried.”

than it is today, no picnic tables or pavilions only palmetto bushes. His first offense, trespassing. As with most public beaches in the area, after dark the beaches are closed. For good reason.

A few hundred teenagers, a bonfire on an open beach and plenty of alcohol likely equals a recipe for disaster. As he recalls, a fight broke out between one of his teammates and a boy from another school. As most would do for a teammate, Steve engaged in the fight. Three days later, the Today Steve is a motivational Hillsborough and peak performance speaker County Sheriff's traveling the world, speaking at Department business conventions, churches and showed up at his to youth. doorstep with a warrant for his arrest. "My father had turned me in and my bond had been revoked while charges were pending." Life around him moved forward, his friends attended homecoming and enjoyed their senior year in high school, as Steve was lodged in the Hillsborough County jail. For three months he waited to see

if the boy in the coma’s condition would improve. Would he be charged with murder, or attempted murder? Steve recalls, "After those three months, I remember calling home and my mom answering the phone crying. I still remember her words,'Son, he came out of the coma and he's going to live.' It was the best news I'd ever heard. When I talk to middle schools and high schools around the country, I always try to impart on them that when you make bad choices,

there are almost always bad consequences. For me, those consequences were going to be huge. The media had gotten a hold of the story and at the time, there had been a lot of fighting going on in the area so they made an example out of me and I was sentenced to 10 years in a Florida state prison at 17 years old." Nothing in life prepared him for the world he was about to enter. He was sent to one of the most violent prisons in Florida, a prison which has since been shut down. He recalls that first year being absolutely terrible, having to fight for his life on numerous occasions. While other kids his age were heading off to college, Steve watched as other inmates were beaten or stabbed to death right before his eyes. It was a far cry from anything he'd ever known. Nothing in life can prepare a 19 year old boy for that world. The Darkest Moment It was about a year into his incarceration and time for lights-out . presence, remembering his Grand-dad's words from all those years ago." For the first time in his life the thought of suicide crossed his mind. He felt like his life had no meaning and no purpose. As he sat there contemplating suicide, he remembered something his grandfather told him when he was little. He and his sister had spent their summers in Tallahassee where their grandparents owned property. As many grandfathers do, his grandfather would preach and impart his wisdom over their time together. Steve remembers one summer, “he asked me to promise one thing. He said, 'Just promise me if you're ever at the darkest moment in your life, your back's against the wall and you feel like you don't have any way out, just promise you'll drop to your knees and you'll cry out for God’.” He was there. The darkest moment of his life. No way out. So he took his granddad’s advice, and he asked God for help. In that very moment his life took a dramatic shift. All of a sudden it was like his life was given purpose and the meaning returned. He knew, deep inside there was something big he would do with his life. At 19, he Page 16 | November 2017

STEVE HOPPER

had no idea what it was yet. First, he needed to survive this place. After all, he was only one year into a ten year sentence and needed to find a way to survive the next nine inside. He began studying everything going on around him, watching people and interactions. In doing so he began to learn how people connected with each other. Survival Mode Steve began to eat, sleep and drink every ounce of self development material he could get his hands on. At the time, he didn't even know why. He just knew he needed to develop himself from the inside out. He began by reading books on personal development, not knowing what he would even use it for. Never knowing one day he'd be an international motivational speaker, or that he would hold leadership conferences and seminars for business professionals and coach the youth of our nation. It all began in prison, teaching other inmates how they could change their lives before they were even released. Steve had begun changing the lives of others before he even realized he had begun changing his own. He served seven years of his ten year sentence before he was released, becoming a free man when he was twenty-four years old.

A Second Chance He had become incarcerated as a seventeen year old kid and was being released into a world expecting him to be a responsible, productive member of society. Although he had used his time more wisely than most, studying business as much as possible while incarcerated, he would undoubtedly need some help reintegrating. He focused on protecting his mind while behind bars, helping him to better integrate back into society when released. Something he credits to the positive literature and material he submersed himself in early on. Even so, being institutionalized took a great toll on him, and he still remembers the overwhelming feelings he had on his first trip to the grocery store after prison. Decent jobs can be tough for convicted felons to come across, but an auto dealer took a chance on Steve. Someone said, "despite your record we're going to give you a chance to prove yourself." Within a short time he earned a top sales position, was moved into a leadership position within the company, promoted to management and became a national sales trainer for the company's employees. Creating Destiny In 2008, when the economy saw a decline in the job market, like many others, Steve found himself

in the unemployment line. Reality hit. He was an ex-con with no college education in an economy where even someone with a college degree couldn't find employment. That's when that little voice inside spoke up again and he decided he would create his own destiny: his own marketing company. After all, it wasn’t just his own destiny depending on his success now, but also his wife, Lauren, and their four beautiful children, Chloe, Cory, Katie, and Cody’s futures were in the balance as well. Steve began networking and built a successful marketing company from the ground up, yet even with monetary success, he still felt there was a missing component. He didn't feel like he was doing the great things he envisioned in his cell that night in prison. That's when he started to pray, "whatever it is you created me for God, I'm ready. Whatever my purpose is tell me, let me go after it." While attending a networking event he'd struck up a conversation with a gentleman who, unknown to him at the time, was a magazine editor. The two met for coffee a few weeks later and the next thing he knew, his story was a feature in a magazine. Steve recalls, “After the feature, my phone, email, everything just

exploded. I was overwhelmed with an outpouring of invitations to speak at youth groups, churches, companies and leadership conventions, with scheduled events five or six nights per week at least.” Jokingly, Steve remembers his wife expressing her admiration for his work one night about a year into his speaking but also inquiring as to when and if he would be making any financial gains from the hours he was putting in. That was when he began designing the business model for Steve Hopper International. This was the missing component. Motivational speaking, helping others to achieve more, to push themselves to be the best version of themselves in any aspect of life. Steve's story of rehabilitation is one that inspires, not only within

faith based communities but also from a business standpoint. He now focuses his time as a keynote speaker and peak performance coach, inspiring others to perform at a higher level. Since that revelation, Steve has stepped up his game to expert level in the speaking world, reprioritizing his company’s purpose to inspire strength and extraordinary in everything he contributes. RM (Resident Magazine): Tell us about your present-day motivational speaking business. SH (Steve Hopper): I am now a peak performance coach, I inspire people to perform at a higher level, to find that strength inside of them to go and do something extraordinary with their life or business.

RM: How do you envision modeling your business? SH: I'm training and mentoring a lot of speakers right now and that component could definitely be implement into the business model in the future. Right now, my focus is in delivering keynotes at large corporate events and conventions, and also church and youth events. One event I hold is called the Hundred-Thousand Dollar Handshake. it's a two day intensive designed to teach business owners to grow their business through joint ventures and relationships. What happens during my seminars for many business professionals is a realization that what is holding them back are the limiting thoughts and negative beliefs are keeping them from achieving

the success they want. It’s not that they cannot network or advertise properly. The reality is, everyone has a story. Everyone has been through something that has changed their life and affected them in some way. If they're still holding on to those things, that can really affect the direction their business or life is heading. When I got out of prison, it's important to remember that it took me years, YEARS, to tell my story. I had convinced myself telling my story was a bad thing… that it would prevent me from being successful or stop me from having any good opportunities in life. So I wasn't sharing my prison experience with anyone. It

SH: One of my favorites is a book by John Maxwell called The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader. What this book does is break down what people are going to buy into. I believe our success in business and in life is dependent on our ability to influence others in a positive way. The reality is, in order for us to influence others, they need to buy into us. This goes back to the authenticity of a person as well. If I want to do business with a person, I need to trust them before anything else. This really goes for anything and everything... even our kids are not going to do what we tell them unless we have the ability to influence them to do so. The great thing about that book is that it breaks down what characteristics you need; character, integrity, appearance, attitude and all these different things that go into leadership. In fact my number one, signature keynote speech is called The Ability to Influence. When I go into corporate America, I share my story and then head into what we need to possess every day when we walk out of our house if we want to influence others. the limit. Your relationships will improve and your business will grow to a level you never dreamed it could reach. In the beginning I never would have dreamed I'd become a motivational speaker or write my own book, From Prison to Purpose. It wasn't until I had person after person asking me when was I going to write my story, that I finally told myself I needed to just do it. Once I sat down, it just flowed out of me. I always encourage people I come into contact with to write a book. It has the potential to be a legacy. If you think about it, someone in California can buy my book, read my story and it can impact their life. Even though I've never met them, I can still have an impact. Not to mention my grand-kids, will always have access to that knowledge. A book is such a powerful thing. You don't have to have a crazy prison story, it's just a matter of having something positive that you can put back out into the world that can encourage, inspire or teach someone something. We all have that. We all have a story, an experience that has the potential to help someone else. My first, From Prison to Purpose, is the story of how my life came to be what it is today. Right now

I'm currently working on three new books. One is The $100,000 Handshake, in line with my event. Another is The Incarcerated Heart, which I am co-authoring with my mom. This book is for moms and families of young men who are incarcerated. The fourth book is The Ability to Influence, which will be on how to go about finding your purpose in life. RM: If you could put up a billboard anywhere and have it say anything, where would you put it and what would it say? SH: I would put it in a high traffic area, on the interstate. It would say 'true success in life is when you become part of someone else's story'. That is what I live by. I have to, any time you value your success based on money or status you can very easily be mislead in life. When you impact someone else's life, that is powerful. What does it take to become a speaker of this magnitude? If you ask Steve Hopper, he would tell you just as with any industry, you find your niche and you get what you ask for. You want to become a doctor? Find a medical school and study the right information to become a doctor. Want to become a speaker? Study the industry. Once you find your desire start sharing it with others. Tell others what you want to do. Tell everyone, share your passions with the world. Before you know it, the people you come into contact with will start opening doors for you. We meet new people every day, and unless we share our desires with them, they won't know to open those doors. Steve Hopper is available for speaking anywhere and everywhere. He resides in Lutz on the county line and speaks at leadership conferences, seminars, churches, all youth and sporting events. He has something special for every audience. In 2017, the Wiregrass Wobble Turkey Trot is celebrating its fifth year of the event’s existence. With the help of sponsors and participants, over $110,000 has been raised and distributed to local charities since its inaugural race in 2013. The DisComfort

How long can you BE with a crying baby, slow-moving traffic, starting a business, retiring, the dog barking, changing jobs or any situation that can wreak havoc on your ego-mind? Learning to hang out at your edge of discomfort in yoga will help to quiet your mind and center yourself during bouts of chaos, change or growth in your life, MEANWHILE expanding your edge of discomfort beyond where it just was.

ZONE I

n our yoga practice, we willfully move our bodies into an asana (posture) and allow ourselves and our minds to relax in to the “sweet spot,” where for a moment, you feel like you could be in that posture forever. We breathe in to the posture, rest in the moment and simply BE. Joy may even arise in that silent space when both judge and jury of the mind are replaced with the calm witness. Ahhh. Another moment passes and your knee begins to quiver. Your quiet mind becomes agitated, annoyed, frustrated and concerned. It may begin negotiating with you, convincing you to get out or give up. You can hardly stand the noisy thoughts blaring in your head and just as you are ready to follow your ego-mind and snap out of the posture, you hear the teacher say, “Breathe and sink a little deeper into the

Page 22 | November 2017

pose.” Now, you have entered The DisComfort Zone. Throughout my corporate career, I can’t tell you how many times I heard or read in the latest corporate self-help book, “Get out of your comfort zone,” or “Life happens outside your comfort zone,” “Live outside your comfort zone” and we label people derogatorily as non-risk takers or small when we judge those who appear to be staying in their comfort zones. Now I shout STAY, LIVE, FLOURISH IN YOUR COMFORT ZONE!!! AND (there is always an “and,”) willfully, gradually and gently slide in to The DisComfort Zone. Let your knee shake longer than your mind wants and feel the energy as it pulsates, vibrates or otherwise quivers. I have seen students drop out or pop out of poses stating they aren’t strong enough. This is the ego-mind on loud speaker. Strength is hardly ever the issue: the ego-mind is

typically the culprit. Pressing against your edge of discomfort and staying with it inside The DisComfort Zone is what stretches and expands your comfort zone without getting out, giving up, or popping off the mat. Yoga is dynamic and we practice keeping the body safe from injury. When we are holding a posture and you have entered The DisComfort Zone, you make micro-movements against your edge to deepen the sensation, thereby expanding your edge further and further without risk of hurting yourself. You can also give yourself permission to ease up on the edge slightly allowing the monkey mind to settle down. While at your edge of discomfort, witness the edgy thoughts, see them as they run amok like deer at dusk. Using your mind’s eye, direct your breath to the edgy area of your body. Allow for the

Blessings T

here’s too much bad news. At some point we have to throw up our hands and do something good. Good overcomes bad. Every single time. This is a month of thanks giving, so let’s intentionally be grateful—literally count our blessings. Write a list. Add to it every day. There is something good in every day even if small and fleeting. I suspect that we mostly ignore it: an extrahelpful bagger in the grocery store, the police officer who responds to your fender bender, an unexpected gift from a friend. These things count. One day recently, I did not listen to the news all day. I didn’t do it to bury my head in the sand, but to give myself a respite. A news fast can be one of the best things we can do for ourselves. It truly helped my psyche. I did something else on the news fast day: I went to a piano recital given by beginner piano students. Our church is blessed with two very fine musicians, their music is sublime. They are students at the USF School of Music. Albina K……….is our pianist, and her husband, Eduard Teregulov, is a cellist. They are brilliant musicians. Eduard teaches piano and it was his recital that I attended. Eduard’s students who played were 9 years old, 11 years old, a couple of electrical engineering students in their 20’s—they played with four hands, and one 73-year-old. Eduard and Albina also gifted us with their playing.

There was a classic piece. Many hymns. And “Yellow Submarine.” All of the pieces were balms for my weary soul. The latter was just sunshine, or as we say in South Louisiana, lagniappe—“something extra.” Each introduced him or herself before playing, played their selections, then stood and bowed at the end. Piano lessons are different from when I was a child, as Eduard is teaching the grace of the whole performing experience. But then again, I was not a serious student. You have to really practice for that. Each part serves to mature the student in poise, speaking in front of people, and playing in front of them too. They are stretching themselves. And they are growing. That is good. The 73-year-old student always wanted to learn and is grateful for a teacher who is patient with her. Good outshines bad. Every single time. What a joy that moment was, and such a privilege to be let in on this precious time for the students.

Do yourself a favor in this month of thanks giving: like these wonderful piano students, where can you stretch yourself? How might you give joy? Share your gifts? Learn? Risk? Where can you find peace? (News fast for a day or so?) How might you support someone who is learning something new? The holidays will put us on fast forward—how might we put the brakes on? What is necessary? What can you drop? For what are you thankful? The holidays give us plenty of opportunity to practice patience. What does that look like to you? How can you be the good that the world needs?

OTB Delight Café 2653 Bruce B Downs Blvd Suite 121 Wesley Chapel, FL 813.973.8880

May you have peace this season. May the news grow better, not worse. May you see the good that outshines the bad. This is my prayer for us.

TRAINING vs. PRACTICE? ROCKSTAR ELITE SKILLS TRAINING

learning. Learning both the basic skills of the game for future success along with social, behavioral and mental learning, all while having fun. I see so many underdeveloped players never reaching their full potential due to years of practice with too little or improper training. Spending training time practicing is a waste of parent’s money and the instructors precious time. You practice at home to progress: you attend training to learn what to practice. Baseball is a complex and technical game that takes years to gain proficiency. Even when a young by Coach Ryan Pryor player shows good skills and advancement there is much to do am often asked why we mentors. Unfortunately, parents to keep that player ahead of the call everything here at are bombarded with too many Rockstar Elite Skills training options these days. Parents ever changing game. Training...TRAINING... beware, many are nothing more I always ask the players, “What and not practice. Practice is than babysitters or worse, a sales a player’s responsibility to do pitch in disguise by an unqualified is IT you do in baseball?” They entertain me with a reply “HIT on their own time at home to instructor. IT, THROW IT AND CATCH improve individual abilities. IT”. IT will be the same whether Training is a place of skilled The question is where to put your learning by instructors and child for the best development and playing youth, high school, college

or maybe one day in the MLB. Your level of proficiency and play will have to increase to stay in the game or have the positive youth experiences that every parent wants for their young player. Hopefully we can see the importance of training. Basically, you don’t know what you don’t know! Practice is essential, you must train to determine what is best to practice. That will change depending on your purpose. The internet is not training, knowledge yes, but not training. You can see what to do, but nothing replaces guidance by a trained professional. This does not mean someone that played professional ball. Unfortunately, that is one of the biggest traps with training. You should gain knowledge at training and be able to take something away to practice on at home. Skills need to be broken down in ways players can progress. Instruction needs to be age appropriate with good progressions

and transitions for higher levels of play. For example, take Catching IT, how would you start the basic instruction before even discussing the mechanics of catching and different types of catches. Here is a Rockstar Tip of the Day that extends to all levels of catching from youth to the pros. We call it the 3R’s: 1. 2. 3.

READ- the ball (where is the ball going) REACT- to the ball for the best positioning to make an out or transition to throwing RECEIVE- the ball correctly depending on your position and the type of ball

Experience comes two ways, trial and error on your part or passed on from the experienced. Both are necessary, but learning from others saves all kinds of pain, money and relationships. Yes! Relationships. With your son or daughter, your wife, your friends and your community. There are so many traps, hidden doors, politics, hurdles and most can be avoided if you are armed with good information in your training and practice accordingly on what you do know and not on what you don’t know.

or breaking skills down age appropriate, that is a RED FLAG, run and save your $$$. Training is knowledge gained, therefore listen and learn so you can apply your new knowledge to your practice routine and overall game performance. Training and practice work together for true success and development so get started today and grind it out. Here at Rockstar Elite Skills Training we have a little quote to train and practice by ….. be so good they can’t ignore you!
