Signature Event: 34th Annual Helen Drake Invitational April 12-16, 2017 Recognized as one of the largest USTA (United States Tennis Association) adult events across the country, the Helen Drake has been a staple tournament at TOPS’L for the last 34 years. This year’s event is expected to have more than 250 players, competing in their age division from Open to 80s.

Meet the Tennis Pros
Meet the Tennis Pros Director of Tennis Joe D’Aleo Joe D’Aleo has been with TOPS’L since 1995 and has played a vital role in making TOPS’L one of the best tennis resorts in the country. His passion and devotion to the game have given him an accomplished tennis background as a player, coach and teacher. Joe started playing tennis when he was three-years-old with his parents in Miami Beach, FL. Joe was ranked #5 in the state of Georgia in 1989, which led him to play collegiate tennis singles and doubles for Georgia Tech in Atlanta. He has coached many state and nationally ranked juniors and adults during his career. In 2003, he was voted Best of the Emerald Coast teaching professional. Joe has been certified with the USPTA as an Elite Professional for 20 years and was nominated USPTA 2006–2007 District Pro of the Year, Florida division for the Panhandle. He was the USPTA FL District President for District 1 from 2010–2013 and currently serves on the USPTA FL board as Vice President. He has been awarded USPTA FL District President of the year for 2011 and 2012 and received the prestigious honor of USTA FL & USPTA FL service award in 2011.
Head Tennis Professional Sam Vickroy Sam Vickroy has been part of the TOPS’L tennis staff since 2004. His father started him in the game of tennis in Nashville, Tennessee, which led to Bill Tym coaching Sam throughout his junior tennis career. Sam was a top-ranked junior player at the state and southern levels. Sam played college tennis at Virginia Intermont NAIA, where he went undefeated his senior year in #3 singles and #2 doubles, with the team finishing 14th in the nation that year. After college, Sam went to work for world-renowned professional Bill Tym at Richland Country Club where he got the opportunity to work with some world-ranked juniors. Sam has been a USPTA Elite professional for 15 years and continues to grow his knowledge of the game year after year. His enthusiasm and love of teaching makes him a great instructor for both private lessons and group clinics. Sam’s experience adds a lot of expertise to the tennis program at TOPS’L, and we look forward to many more years with Sam as part of the team.

Assistant Tennis Professional Tyler Marengo Tyler Marengo joined the TOPS’L tennis staff in 2013. Tyler’s junior tennis career marked him as one of the top players in Michigan in both singles and doubles. During his junior career, Tyler also earned a Division 1 State Championship title in doubles. He later attended Ferris State University, where he proved to be a valuable asset, as well as a leader of the men’s varsity team. Tyler’s singles/doubles career of 82-27 earned the record for Best Singles Career and second Best Doubles Career at Ferris State. Tyler is a USPTA Elite Professional and enjoys teaching players of all ages and abilities.
Ferris State University’s Professional Tennis Management program was not only the first of its kind in 1986, but remains one of only two to this day, and is the largest bachelor’s degree program accredited by the USPTA. Tyler graduated Ferris State University in 2013 with a degree in Professional Tennis Management with an emphasis on Business Administration. During his college career, Tyler also completed summer internships at the Birmingham Country Club in Michigan, as well as the Greenwich Country Club in Connecticut.

Meet Our Culinary Leader Scott Hutchinson TOPS’L Food & Beverage Manager 844-577-6472 When did you join the TOPS’L Team? July 2015 Where and how were you trained? US Navy training- chef onboard USS San Francisco (Fast Attack Submarine), White House (chef and butler), French Embassy (chef) & also Certified Estate Manager (Butler) How did you get into the culinary business? Ever since I can remember, I have had a taste for the unique and decadent when it comes to food. Variety is not only the spice of life, but rather the most basic ingredient of my diet. What is your most popular food or drink item TOPS’L? On the Blue Dunes Pool Deck, the “Destin Refresher” with Pinnacle Vodka and Cruzan Coconut Rum with pineapple and cranberry juices with a splash of lemon-lime soda is our biggest selling drink. One of our most popular foods is our Cuban Sandwich.
What is your first food memory? My first food memory involves frying eggs. I remember being about 7 years old and frying eggs when my parents weren’t home. I was more paranoid about the eggs looking and tasting beautiful than I was about the spanking I would get if they caught me cooking without an adult around! What are some of your signature dishes? More than a signature dish, I have more of a signature philosophy about food. It is important to me to respect food by sourcing local ingredients, supporting our local vendors who put their hard work into their outstanding products, and being true to the craft of cooking. I believe in Slow Foods, it takes time for perfection. Here at TOPS’L, we will be exploring much more of this philosophy as time goes by. Is there an ingredient you use a lot that would surprise people? It may surprise people, but I appreciate the use of good fats as there is no substitute in flavor or satisfaction. What would we find in your kitchen at home? Fresh, non-processed foods waiting to be thrown together in a unique way using techniques from a variety of cultures throughout the world. Variety…no repetition… Love that! What’s your go-to snack? I’m a sucker for homemade flavored popcorn as a snack.
What drives you to be in the food & beverage industry? What drives me each day is to please people with great food and thoughtful service. It’s as simple as treating others as you would like to be treated. I love eating interesting food and receiving topnotch service!

through the years The Clark brothers out of Dallas, Tex., had the vision for TOPS’L back in the 1980s, and not a moment too soon. The land changed ownership many times over the years, and the latest owner had plans to develop an automobile racetrack. Luckily, these enterprising young developers had a vision to create a “residential-commercial resort community” on the 52 acres of land we now refer to as TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort. On September 20, 1983, they formed the TOPS’L Master Association with documents that still govern how TOPS’L operates today. Throughout one year, 1986, they developed roads and infrastructure, along with the sales and check-in office, TOPS’L Club, tennis courts, Tennis Village and Beach Manor. Immediately following the completion of these

projects, the Clark brothers were affected by sweeping changes to income tax laws which forced them to release control of the property. In 1994, Abbott Realty (the former business name for ResortQuest) joined forces with a prominent businessman from Memphis, Tenn., to purchase the property and continue to build out the plans for the resort. From 1996 to 1999, The Summit, Captiva, Sierra Dunes and The Tides were constructed. TOPS’L has three undeveloped parcels approved for construction throughout the property; however, at this time none have immediate plans to be developed.
