Welcome

TO GULF SHORES & ORANGE BEACH A beach community full of history and culture. By Melissa Watson

Fort Morgan 180

GULF OF MEXICO

The Gulf Shores & Orange Beach area was a well-kept secret to the outside world until Hurricane Frederic in 1979. The aftermath of the storm contributed to the areas rebirth as a tourist destination, bringing condos, beach homes, and many exciting attractions, to include golfing, fishing and so much more. This development set the stage to attract families and long-term winter guests to the area, starting family vacation traditions that still carry on today. Kaiser Realty was introduced into the market in 1980, celebrating a milestone anniversary in 2020. That’s 40 years in the Vacation Rental business in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, making the Kaiser legacy one of the most respected names in the business.

6

Over the years growth has certainly been recognized, as the Kaiser family has joined forces with leading vacation rental brands to elevate the business and stay the leaders in the vacation rental industry. Most recently combining forces with Vacasa, marking an incredible milestone, as we unite to help families and friends create lifelong memories in more than 23,000 vacation rentals, worldwide – and growing!

Our 32-miles of white sand beaches along this 27,000-acre island boast crystal-clear water and sugar-white sand, and have been named some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Inland areas provide a different landscape all together with freshwater lakes, bayous, rivers and coves to leave endless exploration and possibilities when returning to vacation over the years.

Nestled between Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida, and easily accessible from many southeastern states via Interstates I-65 and I-10, the Gulf Coast of Alabama borders the Intracoastal Waterway to the north, the Gulf of Mexico to the south, Mobile Bay to the west and Perdido Bay to the east.

1970s. Like many coastal towns, commercial fishing has led the way for tourism, and today, 26 million visitors explore the area with their families and loved ones on vacation. Fondly known as “Small Town, Big Beach”, many of the small-town features that made the area so charming in the early years are still intact and the tradition carries on for locals and visitors to enjoy.

The Gulf Coast of Alabama is rich in history and culture. Both the Gulf Shores & Orange Beach communities were settled as fishing villages in the mid-1800s. In addition, the area was also known for farming, specifically orange groves, which is how Orange Beach got its name. Military buffs can experience the fortress that guarded the Mobile Bay by vacationing or spending the day in Fort Morgan. A short ferry ride to Dauphin Island will allow you to tour Fort Gaines, a three-hundred-year-old fort. Instrumental in attracting visitors to Alabama’s Gulf Coast was the opening of the Intracoastal Waterway in 1937. The removal of the wetlands made the beaches accessible and the first hotel was opened in 1947. This also led to a rise in the coastal shrimping industry. Shrimping, oyster harvesting and

C E L E B R ATING

40 YEARS Continuing the Kaiser Legacy with Growth and Innovation By Brook Jones

vacasa.com/alabama | Reservations: 866-563-4986

Launching into the vacation rental business in 1980, the Kaiser name has become one of the most respected brands in the business. Over the years, growth has certainly been recognized in the vacation rental industry, as the Kaiser family has joined forces with leading vacation rental brands to continue to develop the business and lead the local industry in worldwide market growth. Most recently, Kaiser Realty Vacation Rentals has combined forces with Vacasa, an international vacation rental company providing property management services in the U.S, Europe, Central and South America, and South Africa. This collaboration marks an incredible milestone, as we unite to continue the legacy of helping families and friends create lifelong memories in over 23,000 vacation rentals, worldwide – and growing! As we embark on this new journey, we fondly remember the 40 years leading up to this monumental moment. We reflect on our guests and friends that have become family while on this journey with us, including our property owners and wonderful staff of professionals. We would not be where we are today, if it were not for them, and for that, we are grateful. We look forward to continuing to make memories with you for years to come.

here as immigrants from Germany, they staked their claim and began farming the rich, fertile land and still do today. No strangers to dedication and hard work, when it comes to seeing opportunity and having a vision to make dreams a reality, you’ll find that common bond throughout the Kaiser family. Leonard Kaiser, the middle of eight children, (Yes, you read right--eight) always dreamed of owning his own business. Already in the real estate sales business, and owning the Shell Station at the foot of the Intracoastal bridge, in 1980, following hurricane Frederick, he launched Kaiser Realty, Inc.

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Kaiser family establishing the vacation rental business in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, we trace their lineage back to their great grandparents coming to Elberta, AL. Traveling Reservations: 866-563-4986 | vacasa.com/alabama

Leonard recruited his nephew, Randy Kaiser, and the two together, set out in defining the vacation rental industry in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Over the years, several Kaiser family members have made their impact on the business, helping the vacation rental, property management and real estate industry grow and evolve to what we have today, 40 years later. The Kaisers’ main focus was to share the secret of the Alabama Gulf Coast’s beaches and support the local community, provide a quality vacation rental product, and deliver exceptional service with true Southern Hospitality. Their company’s mission statement “For a vacation or a lifetime, our family is committed to yours”, guided their path. This vision would drive the Kaiser Realty brand to be recognized across the country as a leader in the vacation rental industry. In addition to the management of private vacation homes, Kaiser Realty helped usher in the new era of condo manage-

ment with their first condo, Summer House, in Orange Beach, AL. Today, there are over 19,000 vacation rentals along Alabama’s 32 miles of coastline and in 2018, over 6 million visitors came to enjoy the sugar-white beaches and blue green water. “As a kid playing along our beaches, I never thought about how unique of a travel destination we had right under our feet.” Leonard Kaiser shares. “It wasn’t until I began traveling the country and seeing how other beach destinations were being developed that I knew how truly special our coastal resources were right here at home.” The uniqueness of the destination is exactly what Kaiser Realty, Inc. focused on when marketing Gulf Shores & Orange Beach to guests and travelers. “Gulf Shores & Orange Beach has grown considerably since we first began welcoming guests to the island,” Randy Kaiser explains, “But the charm that first ignited our area’s popularity is still very much here.” We take this time to reflect on the past four decades, remembering fondly the traditions that still continue today. We pride ourselves on providing outstanding customer service as our amazing employees continue to eagerly help our guests select the perfect vacation home for making priceless memories with their friends and family. And, we confidently embrace this exciting growth and innovation opportunity as we transition from the Kaiser Realty Family to the Vacasa, Alabama Family.

Beach 101 Leave only footprints

HOW TO BE A GOOD BEACH GOER: Tips and tricks to have a fun-filled and safe beach day By Samantha Jones

Picture this: you just arrived at your vacation home along the stunning Alabama Gulf Coast, and are excited for an action-packed day on the beach, soaking up the sun and dipping your toes in the sand. With more than 32 miles of pristine beaches, a variety of watersports activities and plenty of indoor and outdoor fun alike, you are sure to experience an unforgettable beach vacation during your time on the Alabama coast.

Here are a few tips to help you “leave only footprints” and ensure a safe and happy beach experience:

As a visitor to the area, we hope that you enjoy every grain of sand as much as the beach lovers before you. With your help, we can ensure future generations also will be able to experience the vacation of a lifetime when visiting our lovely coast. We hope to see our guests enjoying all the beach has to offer, while continuing to make Gulf Shore & Orange Beach the stunning stretch of coastline we all know and cherish.

• The relaxing sound of the waves hitting the sand may set off fireworks in your heart, but please keep the flames stoked in your heart and not on the beach.

Come, stay, play and enjoy all of the natural beauty that the Alabama Gulf Coast has to offer. We simply ask that you take with you all those happy beach memories, and leave only your footprints.

20

• When packing your cooler with the essential beverages for a successful beach day, be sure to make room for aluminum and plastic containers instead of glass. Water bottles, sports drinks and your favorite soda are a great way to stay hydrated throughout the day.

• If your vacation home is away from the beach, driving may be a must-do. Leave the tire tracks on the pavement and only footprints on the sand by using the designated parking areas a safe distance away from the beach.

• One fascinating aspect of visiting Gulf Shores & Orange Beach is all the wonderful wildlife native to the area. While photos of your wildlife sightings are encouraged, be sure to use the beach accesses instead of the sand dunes. • Everyone deserves rest and relaxation while on vacation, taking in the breathtaking views of the Gulf of Mexico, building sandcastles and playing beach games, all while making lasting beach memories. To allow everyone to experience the same, please keep large tents (more than 10’ x 10’), metal shovels and general litter away. • Beach chairs, umbrellas, pop-up tents, coolers and wagons are easily caught and carried during gusts of wind, so be sure these things are secured. Remember to remove them each night as the tide comes in and they will get washed away.

BEACH SAFETY

Our number one priority is your safety. Please review and discuss the beach flags with your family, prior to arrival.

RIP CURRENTS Rip currents may form in nearshore sandbar breaks. Although rarely more than 30 feet wide, rip currents can extend 1,000 feet offshore, reaching 100 feet in width, and can travel up to 3 mph. Some are present a few hours, others are permanent. Rip currents are prevalent after storms. Rip currents may have darker color surf.

What To Do

How to Help Someone Else

• Do not panic or try to swim against the current.

• Notify a lifeguard • Call 911, give accurate landmarks

• Relax. • If you cannot break out of the current, float calmly until it lessens, swimming parallel to the shore until out of the rip current, or shout and wave for assistance. • The best way to avoid a Rip Current is to heed the Beach Safety flag system.

• Do not enter the water, you too may be caught in the current • Throw the swimmer a flotation device • Try not to lose sight of the swimmer

Fun 5 Low Cost Vacation Adventures Ideas by Adam Pfaff

Vacations are that time of year when families dream of breaking out of the ordinary and escaping into some much-needed time together. Tight schedules and sales pitches are traded in for salty air and sand between your toes; the perfect backdrop for building new family memories. While most planners focus on the family budget during the preparation process, it’s easy to get pulled into high-cost excitement once you arrive at your destination. Here are five family-friendly and affordable adventures to help keep everyone happy during your stay.

24

1. SAND VOLLEYBALL – The feeling of sitting down, the sand between your toes, with your favorite beverage in hand is a feeling that most of us lust after all year. However, if you have little beach lovers in your group, you know that sitting still is a short-lived experience. One of the easiest things you can do is set up a volleyball net in the sand outside of your beach home or condo and play games such as volleyball, badminton, hoover ball, or whatever your creative kiddos can come up with. Don’t forget: be sure to take your net back to your property when you leave the beach for the day.

2. SHELLING – The Alabama Gulf Coast is an amazing ecosystem filled with excitement for curious vacationers. Collecting shells along the shoreline is a wonderful way to see everything that Gulf Shores & Orange Beach has to offer. From clam and conch shells to sand dollars, starfish and beach glass, walking along the coastline searching for uniquely beautiful gifts from the Gulf is a great way to teach everyone in your group about the beauty of our water systems.

Just Add a Splash of Water! By Zandra Wolfgram

GRAB A BOARD Do you prefer your hair wavy or straight? Either way, the calm Back Bay waters are a great place to go from bed head to wet head. Stand up and balance on a long, broad paddle board and glide on top of the surface. This hot new water sport is great exercise and an easy way to explore calm waters. GO BANANAS! Pile your friends on top of one of Ike’s bright yellow inflated banana boats and go absolutely water world wild while being towed along the waves. LET’S SURF! Gentle to moderate-sized waves are perfect for first-time enthusiasts looking to rip and ride some waves to shore. Local surf shops have everything you need to gear up. Looking for a lesson? Try Innerlight Surf Shop in nearby Pensacola. For local surf spots, weather updates and a full surf report before you hit the beach visit surfline.com. SKIM THE SURFACE Thrust your skim board in front of you onto the sand just after the wave breaks, hop on and glide across the foamy water. In no time you’ll join the

3. BICYCLE RENTALS – While the costs of vacation fun can easily creep up, renting bicycles during your stay is a great way to stay active and explore the coast during your travels. With 32 miles of beaches to visit, hopping on some cruisers and exploring the Gulf State Park or utilizing the city’s bike lanes to safely travel is not only an amazing way to spend quality time together, but also help to earn some extra desserts during your time on the island.

4. NATIONAL NAVAL AVIATION MUSEUM – When the unexpected rain shower tries to put a damper on your beach time, there is nothing better to do than pile in the car and drive to the nearby National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola for a day of sky-high fun. From World War II aircraft to catching glimpses of the Blue Angels practicing their routine, visiting the museum is a wonderful excuse to try something new during your travels (and learn a little history about our great country, too).

Float along the emerald coastline alone or with up to two friends on U.S. Coast Guard approved vessels at Chute for the Skye and find out why this vacation experience will have your troubles drifting away. GO DEEP AND DIVE IN With natural and artificial wrecks, reefs and dive sites teeming with exotic sea life, Gulf Shores & Orange Beach is the place for amazing dive adventures. Be sure to check out Allen Reef, Wallace Reef and Sparkman Reef. Dive in deep or hover above it all with a snorkel and mask and let this underwater world amaze you. Certification, private and group trips are available through many dive shops and charter companies. RUN THE WAVES For full-throttle fun, rent a wave runner for the day. Parents can safely ride with kids in tow. Teens can test out spins and tricks. Experience your own private dolphin tour or explore inlets and islands. There are tons of rental companies to choose from who will have you zooming in no time. Don’t forget your waterproof camera; this is one adventure for the scrapbook. MOONWALK ON THE WATER Well, maybe not moon walk, but the Wind & Water Learning Center does host a monthly Full Moon social event with live music to raise money for local charities. Plus, they will gear you up and launch you with a Kayak Fishing Guide, which will have you reeling in tons of fun on the enchanting Back Bay waters.

5. Hundreds of species of birds call the trails home filling the air with fun chirps while countless vegetation varieties add beauty and charm to the quiet, rustic pathways.

FINDING VALUE in being a

Service to Others By Melissa Watson

When you use your time to serve the world, you will also find that the world serves you, and we believe it is an honor and pleasure to be able to contribute to the community in which you live. Community service is part of the culture that has made the Kaiser legacy in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach such a valued and respected name, and we intend to carry that into the future as the company continues to thrive and grow, joining forces with Vacasa. You will find the heart of our company remains in the loyal employees who call this place home and who dedicate their time and resources to giving back to this wonderful community and many local organizations. We are in the business of serving others. Hospitality, it’s what we do for a living. We know if we take care of our community, it will in turn be there for us. Our commitment to our community can not only be found in monetary donations and sponsorships, but also in the heart and dedication of our valued associates who volunteer their time. We truly believe one of the greatest gifts you can give is the gift of time. We are invested in organizations who share vision for our local community and we stand by them in their missions… some to find a cure, others to make sure our environment is clean and thriving, and everywhere in between. We look forward to continuing a legacy that is invested in our people and the community we serve.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Partnering with Art on Parade By Samantha Jones

The Alabama Gulf Coast is a melting pot of many unique animals and sea creatures, adding to the colorful landscape and lifestyle associated with the community. One marvelous creature in particular to call our sandy beaches home is the sea turtle, making Gulf Shores & Orange Beach its sacred nesting ground. Nationally protected and monitored by grassroots groups along the coast, sea turtles have grown to become one of the most exciting subjects for beach photography, especially as their hatchlings make their first walk to the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. The city of Gulf Shores has partnered with the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber and the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance to “raise awareness and support of environmental conservation, sustainable tourism, and community arts and culture,” through its Turtle Tracks program. Carried out by the Art on Parade group based in the Gulf Shores & Orange Beach area, Turtle Tracks partners with local businesses, groups and organizations to sponsor unique sea turtle designs that are placed at specific locations along the Alabama Gulf Coast. Each turtle display is made from a custom fiberglass mold and stands about four feet tall and is individually designed by local artists. This trademarked public art project made its debut in 2014 at the 43rd Annual National Shrimp Festival and has had multiple sponsored turtles since, each with their own intricate and unique details.

initiatives and raising awareness for the environmental conservation of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach.

We take pride in sponsoring our very own vacation inspired sea turtle - whose design is inspired by the Kaiser Realty legacy and their beach ball logo. This incredible art piece was on display with the other exquisitely-designed turtles at the Orange Beach Welcome Center throughout 2018 for tourists and locals alike to learn about the importance of sea turtle conservation efforts. Come visit the Front Desk in the Gulf Shores office to see our turtle creation. For more information visit Turtle Tracks online at TurtleTracksGS.com.

We are proud to be a part of the Turtle Tracks program, showing full support for our community’s arts programs, sustainable tourism

THE UNDERWATER FOREST Presented by This is Alabama, written by Ben Raines

Just off the coast of Alabama, an ancient forest swarms with sea life just like a coral reef. How did it get there? The Underwater Forest is an ancient cypress forest found sixty feet underwater in the Gulf of Mexico, due south of Gulf Shores, Alabama. The forest dates to an ice age more than 60,000 years ago, when sea levels were about 400 feet lower than they are today. The forest appears to be a wholly unique relic of our planet’s past, the only known site where a coastal ice age forest this old has been

preserved in place. It is considered a treasure trove of information, providing new insights into everything from climate in the region to annual rainfall, insect populations, and the types of plants that inhabited the Gulf Coast before humans arrived in the new world. Scientific analysis of the site is ongoing. The scientists believe the forest was buried beneath the Gulf sediments for eons, until giant waves driven by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 uncovered it. Raines and AL.com collected the first samples from the site, and participated

34

in every scientific mission to the site, beginning in 2012. Dropping 10 fathoms down, below the green waves of the Gulf and back in time to this prehistoric world amounts to a sort of time traveler’s journey. Nothing like the forest, in terms of age or scale, has ever been found. The oxygen-free underwater environment has hermetically sealed the trees in a sort of natural time capsule.

These trees sprouting from the sea floor off Alabama are so much older that they provide a window into a past scientists are still trying to understand. And there are thousands of them, part of a vast and swampy floodplain forest. The scientists believe the trees were buried under layers of mud in an age when sea levels were suddenly on the rise. That mud protected the trees from decomposition because they sealed them away from the oxygen-rich Gulf water. Underwater, where there is no oxygen, there is no decomposition. In effect, the trees have been hermetically sealed in place in a sort of natural time capsule. In this earlier ice age, when much of the water on Earth was locked up in glaciers, sea levels along the Gulf Coast were about 400 feet lower than they are today, and the Gulf shoreline was between 30 and 60 miles farther offshore than our modern beaches. Dauphin Island and the Fort Morgan peninsula on the Alabama coast were veritable mountains at the time, towering hundreds of feet above the surrounding landscape. And Mobile Bay was a valley with a river running through the middle. At various points in the distant past, the rivers that today drain into the Mobile-Tensaw Delta ran south until they hit the Mississippi River, which in this ancient era made a sharp turn to the east in Louisiana and ran along the Mississippi and Alabama coasts toward the Florida Panhandle

before entering the Gulf. Mobile Bay was a forested valley at the time, with rivers running through it. It was in this now inundated zone between the modern shoreline and the more distant ancient shoreline that the Underwater Forest sat. Scientists believe this portion of forest was miles back from the Gulf shoreline at the time, as cypress trees cannot tolerate exposure to salt. Scientists continue to explore the site and learn more about the local ecosystem during that time and how it can be a prediction for future climate changes. You can watch the The Underwater Forest, co-produced by This is Alabama on Youtube, or on This is Alabama’s Roku and Apple TV apps or order DVDs of the documentation at TheUnderwaterForest.com.

at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

Located in the coastal town of Gulf Shores, world-renowned for its beautiful white-sand beaches, the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is one of the most popular family attractions in the region. Also known as the “Little Zoo” for its starring role in the 2006 hit documentary series, The Little Zoo That Could on Animal Planet. This non-profit zoological park is not just a little community zoo; it’s home to over 600 animals, consisting of 199 species, 31 subspecies, and haven to 8 endangered species. The zoo is about a mile from the beach and sits adjacent to a protected nature reserve. Tucked just off the main highway, visitors feel like they have entered a tropical urban oasis filled with intriguing sounds from the rich diversity of exotic animals. Whether it’s the distinctive call from the peacocks, chatter from the monkeys or the occasional roar from one of the lions, you are instantly transported out of life’s hustle and bustle into our peaceable kingdom. Spread out over seven and a half acres with wide pathways, yet providing close-up views of the exhibits, the zoo also has shaded

picnic areas, rest stops and benches, a seasonal concession stand, and a gift shop filled with awesome animal-themed “merch”. It is ideally suited for all ages and levels of mobility, from moms pushing strollers to seniors leisurely strolling. It is also disability accessible and offers free parking! Voted the “#1 Zoo in Alabama” for two years running, it’s more than your typical zoo experience. Whether you’re parents looking for leisurely stroller outing with toddlers, want a fun, educational animal experience for older kids, or even want to take a family time-out from the beach, the zoo has you covered. Got an hour for lunch? Alabama Marine Resources Division

The behind the scenes, biologists, law enforcement officers and staff of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources/Marine Resources Division (AMRD) work along our coastline and in adjacent waters each day to ensure sustainable natural resources are available for the use and enjoyment by our residents and visitors and to protect our threatened and endangered species. PROTECTED SPECIES Alabama provides a year-round or temporary home to a variety of sea life including sea turtles, bottlenose dolphins, and manatees. Our beaches have had almost 1,000 successful sea turtle nests since 2013! AMRD patrols the beaches to educate our residents and visitors on ways to safely avoid disturbing these nests and what to do if they encounter a sea turtle. They also patrol the waters to remind boaters to pay attention to signage in ecologically sensitive areas where these animals feed, mate and migrate. Seeing these animals in the wild is a memorable experience. The following items should be followed to ensure these

At the end of the day, please remove all tents, chairs, trash and other items that you bring with you to the beach. These items can prevent a sea turtle from nesting if they are left overnight. If you are enjoying our beaches after dark, please use a flashlight that produces a red light as it is less noticeable than white light to turtles and reduces disorientation. If you see a turtle on the beach, please turn off your flashlight, stay back at least 100 feet and call 1-888-SEA-TURTLE immediately to report the location. You will be advised what to do. Sea turtle nests are identified and clearly marked by volunteer groups. Please do not enter these areas. Bottlenose dolphins are found in all waters around Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Please do not approach them in any vessel, feed them, or make any attempt to touch them. If you see an injured or stranded dolphin, please call the Marine Mammal Stranding Network at 1-877-942-5343. If you see a manatee, please call the Dauphin Island Manatee Sighting Network at 1-866-493-5803.

Alabama’s state parks provide many thousands of visitors each year with the opportunity to share the natural, cultural, and historical assets of the state. From a single park in 1930, the system has expanded to include 22 parks that are vital to conserving the environment and that provide the public with a variety of recreational choices. Currently, there are 48,000 acres of preserved land designed for state parks. The Gulf Coast Alabama State Park system boasts 6,500 acres of protected lands. It includes 2.5 miles of beach, three fresh water lakes, a nationally recognized scenic nature trail, beach pavilion, fishing pier, picnic area, campground, cabins and cottages and a new 350-room gulf-front lodge and conference center. The nature center has permanent exhibits and seasonal programming. Twenty seven miles of paved/enhanced trails wind through the park, perfect for a day of exploring.

SANDOLLARS - Indigenous to Gulf waters, these fragile sea creatives have no arms or legs, but move around by tiny spines on their bodies. Sandollars are usually found lying in a bed buried under a layer of sand and are most commonly found by digging your toes in the sand. Nature’s riches indeed! SEA TURTLES - Since 2003, more than 50,000 endangered loggerhead, kemps ridley and green sea turtles have hatched on the shores of Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Each summer, mother turtles return to the same beaches to lay their eggs. The Alabama’s Share the Beach program rallies volunteers from May through October to patrol the more than

50 miles of nesting habitat. A time-honored tradition by locals and visitors alike is to sponsor a turtle nest. Sponsorships help provide funding for tracking and monitoring equipment and ensure that more turtle hatchlings have the opportunity to make their treks from the dunes to the Gulf.

MODERATE MONARCHS With an average year-round temperature of 77 degrees, wildflowers bloom every day of the year in Alabama. Attracted to these flowers, monarch butterflies make their annual fall migration along the Gulf Coast to Mexico each year.

THE BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN A symbol of good luck to sailors since ancient times, the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin is not a fish; it is a mammal. They swim in the water, but need air to breathe. You’ll find bottlenose dolphins in the warm bay and Gulf waters feeding on fish and frolicking in the boat waves.

NORTHERN FLICKER - The yellowhammer, also known as the northern flicker or yellow-shafted flicker, became the official state bird of Alabama in 1927. Soldiers from Alabama were nicknamed “yellowhammers” in the Civil War due to their grey and yellow uniforms, which matched the colors of the bird.

The Hangout in Gulf Shores

AND BE

Merry By Melissa Watson

Because few things go better than a frothy libation, a white sand beach and emerald green water, paired with the sound of your favorite tunes, being strummed away from the beachside stage. So, we’re here to tell you about the must try cocktails, craft beer and the local establishments that serve them up, with a side of live music and Southern charm.

Live Bait, Food & Fun

THE BUSHWACKER

THE SHARK ATTACK

SEE HOW WE GET DOWN

Yes, we said bushwacker. This must try beverage was made famous at the Flora-Bama Package & Lounge. Though a staple now along the Gulf Coast, you haven’t been truly bushwacked, unless you’ve ordered one from the Flora-Bama. This ice cream based drink mixed with rum, Crème de Cacao and Kaluha will help you chill out. So, pull up a chair, get ready for some live tunes from the stage and get your bushwacker on. You’ll be glad you did!

The signature drink at The Hangout in Gulf Shores is a dynamic cocktail mixed with Malibu Rum, Blue Curacao and pineapple juice. What makes it a shark attack? Well, a splash of grenadine adds a hue of red and a touch of sweetness. Top it off with an actual shark (toy) and this drink is complete. Drink at your own risk!

Live Bait, Food & Fun, where music, dancing and special events are the talk of the town. The nightclub features rocking bands, the hottest DJ’s, dance parties, and special concert nights showcasing national touring artists. Live Bait is committed to fun, great food, and exceptional service; and don’t forget about their famous libations! There is always something exciting happening at Live Bait.

Tacky Jacks Grill & Tavern

Yoho Rum & Tacos

Gt’s on the Bay

BE A PART OF HISTORY

IT’S 5 O’CLOCK SOMEWHERE

THE CRAFT BEER MOVEMENT

The Original Tacky Jacks has evolved over the years, from its humble beginning in the 1970s, well before the city of Orange Beach was established. At the time, the area was a small fishing community with few full-time residents. Just off Marina Road, sat a business that consisted of a small marina that supplied fuel and fishing tackle for fisherman coming to the area. Its location, with easy access to the Gulf of Mexico, made it a perfect spot for a small bar and grill to relax and visit after a great day on the Gulf. Thus, in 1979, Tacky Jacks Grill & Tavern was established.

And that means it’s the perfect time for a margarita, any time. And if you’re looking for the best, look no further than Yoho Rum & Tacos, a premium casual taco concept where custom cocktails are infused with fresh ingredients. So grab a drink at The Boat Bar near the marina and enjoy some live music with your handcrafted cocktail.

Because no beach vacation is complete without a great local brew, am I right? And with the rise of craft beer on the Alabama Gulf Shores, thanks in part to breweries such as Avondale, Back Forty, and Good People, places to sip a tasty local brew are easy to find. One of our favorites, GT’s on the Bay. GTs features a diverse and one-of-kind menu. Guests can savor unique culinary choices and a blend of local favorites, in addition to special creations with a family friendly atmosphere. Enjoy a stone hearth oven pizza and freshly made salad bar as well as craft beers and daily happy hour.

DESTINATION WEDDING Stefanie Kaiser & Zachary Phillips Photo credit: Leslie Davis - Leslie Davis Photography

Make your dream wedding a reality. Contact a Wedding Sales Specialist at 844-438-7753. THE BIG DAY: October 26, 2019 HOW THE COUPLE MET: Zac and Stefanie met at Birmingham Southern College in 2011. They connected through mutual friends and remained friends throughout their time together at BSC. Stefanie graduated two years before Zac and moved to Auburn for graduate school. Two years later Stefanie was moving back to Birmingham. Zac did not hesitate to reach out. He opened the door by connecting on Facebook and asking Stefanie to join him at his current CrossFit gym. Stefanie joined the gym shortly after and quickly found a new workout partner. The two worked out together for almost a year and on December 9, 2016 they found themselves sitting together at the annual Crossfit Over The Mountain Christmas party. Fast forward 3 months, Stefanie’s birthday was approaching. Zac approached Stefanie at the water fountain in the gym and asked “what can I get you for your birthday?”…Stefanie’s response, “A date with you”. Let’s just say she got what she wanted and more.

THE PROPOSAL: On October 14, 2018, Zac and Stefanie were headed to Ozan Winery just south of Birmingham, for what Stefanie thought was going to be a birthday celebration for Zac’s mom. Upon arrival Zac walked Stefanie up the empty front porch of the winery, and as part of the plan told one of the workers they were there for the birthday party. Zac walked Stefanie over to a table with a view of the vineyard behind it and asked Stefanie to read the wine bottle labels. As she leaned down to take a look, Zac dropped to one knee. She turned around in quiet surprise and the two enjoyed the special moment together. Zac arranged for all of their close family and friends to drive in all at once to surprise Stefanie. Everyone enjoyed a celebration afterward with a wine tasting and party all planned and decorated by Zac’s mom.

FORT MORGAN

FORT MORGAN Off the Beaten Path History Comes Alive The remains of this historic fort illustrate the barrier used by soldiers during times of war. Fort Morgan played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864, and was an active military structure during the Civil War, Spanish-American, and both World Wars. Preceded by Fort Bowyer during the War of 1812, Fort Morgan is a Third System masonry fort built between 1819 and 1833. Standing guard where the bay meets the Gulf of Mexico, the site showcases the evolution of seacoast fortifications and adaptations made by the U.S. Army for the defense of the country. In 1946 the site was turned over to the State of Alabama as a historic site, and offerings now include nature areas, a boat launch, picnic area, and beaches for visitors to enjoy. Whatever your reason for visiting, make sure Fort Morgan State Historic Site is a part of your visit to Alabama’s beautiful Gulf Coast!

Explore a pillar of Civil War History Located on Mobile Point, at the end of Scenic Fort Morgan Peninsula, Fort Morgan Historic site, has a diverse number of activities to make your vacation a memorable one. Although now a peaceful site of reflection, from 1900 to 1923 the fort was Alabama’s largest permanent military post and a vital tool in the success of the armies during key battles at the beginning of the century. After wandering the site, you can explore the museum, featuring exhibits that showcase letters, uniforms, weapons and photographs of the men who served the fort. If you or a member of your family are an active duty service member, explore the exhibitions free of charge.

Once again our family’s vacation is in the memory book, and once again it was more than we anticipated! From making the reservation, to receiving updates from Kaiser, to check in and check out, everything was perfect. We stay at “our” same beach house each year and each year it is clean and comfortable with several pleasing upgrades the past several years. The Kaiser staff is friendly and dedicated in making sure we have a great visit. I especially appreciate the mobile app which keeps us in touch with Kaiser staff and provides us weather updates and suggestions for activities in the area. We have been vacationing in Gulf Shores for many years now and our children and now grandchildren can’t imagine not spending time at the beach house. Thanks, Kaiser, for helping us make wonderful memories for these many years. - Chris W.

Over the decades, Gulf Shores has grown into a beach destination for families, adventurers, and locals, traveling near and far to enjoy the sugar white-sand beaches, beautiful sunsets, world-class festivals, and mouth watering fresh, Gulf seafood. This town is rich in history and culture and carries many traditions forward, passing them on to future generations.

GULF SHORES

GULF SHORES A small town feel with a big beach atmosphere. What shaped our future This 10-mile strip of pristine beach, fondly adopting the tagline “Small Town, Big Beach” has seen its fair share of growth and renewal over the years, as it has continued to increase in popularity amongst beach loving travelers, over the years. When visiting Gulf Shores, you will quickly understand how it’s maintained the local feel while boasting beautiful homes, condos, restaurants and area attractions. The community’s roots are planted in generations of families that have called this area home and love to share our slice of paradise with visitors and locals alike. The completion of the intercoastal waterway in 1937, and the opening of the Gulf State Park in 1939, were both crucial factors in attracting people to the Gulf Shores area. As a primary revenue source, robust shrimping and oyster harvesting found its way to the area in the early 1900’s, and local business owners began seeing a need to offer services as families started to build vacation homes and visitors started to experience the Alabama Gulf Coast beaches. At one time, the area even had its own casino, “The Big Casino”. This all paved the way for the Gulf Shores community you see today.

A Gulf Shores Staple, Then and Now. Ever since the late ‘50s, The Hangout was a popular place to, well, you know – hangout. The original beachfront Hangout was always popular with the younger crowd, offering

dancing, drinks, beach fare, beachwear supplies and more. Fast forward to 2020 and not much has changed (except for the building, after undergoing renovation that occurred following Hurricane Ivan), the Hangout is still the happening place for locals and visitors. Oh, and did we mention the Hangout Music Festival that brings over 40,000 people each year for its spring concert series, Hangout Music Festival, featuring artists such as Jimmy Buffet, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz and many more top performing artists.

Orange each B

Orange Beach has come a long way from a quiet fishing village that boarded up their homes and storefronts after Labor Day. Travel to Orange Beach now and you’ll find a booming beach destination, year-round. World-class sportfishing, sugar-sand beaches, plentiful attractions, and award-winning cuisine are just a few of the things you will find while exploring the area. Orange Beach offers its visitors the option of spending the day on the breathtaking beaches or relaxing on the back bay (dolphin sightings and hermit crabs can be found on both bodies of water). Beyond the beach, this area connects to the Gulf State Park of Alabama where visitors can take in nature with a leisurely bike ride, kayaking, or a stroll through the park. Rest assured, no matter where you spend your day in Orange Beach, you’ll be in awe of the opportunity to experience wildlife and gorgeous scenery around every bend.

ORANGE BEACH

ORANGE BEACH A beach destination with deep roots The Early Years The Orange Beach community was settled as a fishing village, dating back to the mid 1800s, and in addition, the area was also known for farming, specifically orange groves, which is how Orange Beach got its name. These groves were wiped out by a travelling salesman who brought blight infested seedlings which killed all of the groves. This peninsula is and always has been a major attraction for fishing, fish tales of the “Big Catch” were often not an urban myth, and we have photographic proof of this! The waterway continues to play an important role in transportation and trade that continues today through the coastal canal. The canal has also become a popular spot for people looking to partake in water activities. Most days you will find folks, fishing, boating, skiing and so much more.

Paving the way for Growth The Alabama Gulf Coast is no stranger to the wrath of Mother Nature. 2005 brought Hurricane Ivan and Orange Beach was ground zero for the category 4 storm. The aftermath of this historic storm was instrumental in bringing growth during the rebuilding of the town. The people and the community have always been committed to taking care of the area’s natural resources, while taking the necessary steps to welcome growth and development insuring their guests have the best experience possible and whether facing adversity or not,

94

Orange Beach continues to expand its local attractions, shopping, and dining options to help sustain the economy and to give its visitors a world-class experience every time they visit. boat launch, picnic area, and beaches for visitors to enjoy. Whatever your reason for visiting, make sure Fort Morgan State Historic Site is a part of your visit to Alabama’s beautiful Gulf Coast!

Local Flavor & Attractions Every vacation has a “must do” checklist and Orange Beach is no different. Amongst the many local favorites, the Flora-Bama Lounge Package & Oyster Bar tops our list. The land where the establishment sits was given to the State of Alabama by the State of Florida (thanks y’all), in return for the construction of the Perdido Pass Bridge and in the early days, was practically the only thing in the area.

Fast forward to 2020… and you have The Oyster bar, The Yacht Club and Ole’ River Grill. Plus, live music 365 days a year and legendary events that keep people coming back for more… I mean, a mullet toss? Yes, please!

ORANGE BEACH

Booked with ease, checked in with the friendliest gentleman ever. He was superb! The APP you are sent when you book was AMAZING!! The house was great and honestly the cleanest rental I’ve ever been in. Great stay and I love that I was able to click a link to check out and drop my keys in the drop box. Will definitely be booking again with you guys!! Thanks for making my surprise beach trip for my kids one of the best times of their lives. Everything about booking the house, booking, checking in/out and the rental itself literally could not have been better! Thank you so much!!! - Jessica A.

Condo was ready for us earlier than expected, it was clean, comfortable and had all the amenities and supplies as promised. Everything was in working order and we had no issues throughout the length of our stay. Staff was friendly and willing to help. On this trip, the love of my life proposed to me! So it will always hold a special place to me! - Rachel R.

ORANGE BEACH

We just arrived home from a week in Orange Beach and everything was perfect! The staff at Kaiser was so helpful and easy to deal with! Our condo was clean and had everything we needed - especially loved the in-room washer and dryer! I even accidentally washed a beach towel with our unit towels and turned 6 pink!!! I called customer service to see if I needed to pay for the towels or replace them and the gentleman was so kind (even though he laughed a little, which I would have as well!). He assured me that the cleaning service could send them out and didn’t charge me for them even though I expected him to and he had the right to! I would definitely recommend this rental company!!!! - Melissa J.
