Fort Morgan Located at the southernmost tip of Alabama between Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida, and easily accessible from Interstates I-65, I-10 and the Beach Express, coastal Alabama’s geographical borders include the Intracoastal Waterway to the north, the Gulf of Mexico to the south, Mobile Bay to the west and Perdido Bay to the east.

SIMPLY PUT, THIS STRETCH OF THE ALABAMA GULF COAST IS PARADISE FOUND. For 32 miles sugar-white beaches stretch along a 27,000-acre island on the northern most coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The beach boasts turquoise waters and sugary-white sand dunes blanketed in sea oats, while inland areas are shaded with stately live oaks and proud pines. Freshwater lakes, rivers, bayous and coves add nearly 400,000 acres of protected water to the Baldwin County map. Within this picturesque setting, the city of Gulf Shores spans approximately 30 square miles, and the city of Orange Beach covers about 13 square miles. Both enjoy eight miles of beautiful beach.

Historical Commission, formed in 1966 with a mission of safeguarding Alabama’s historic buildings and sites, it is a well-preserved cultural attraction that boasts 14 miles of coastline. The completion of the Intracoastal Waterway in 1937, and the opening of the Gulf State Park in 1939, were both pivotal in attracting people to the Gulf Shores area. Though there certainly are plenty of modern conveniences now, Gulf Shores & Orange Beach channels the nostalgia of a classic beach town. Progress hasn’t come too quickly here. In fact, the first post office didn’t open until 1947. Up until then, the area was sparsely populated with the exception of a small fishing community, which dates back to the early 1800s. The destination first “hit the map” when incorporation began in 1956 with the Town of Gulf Shores becoming official in 1958. Originally the town centered along the banks of the Intracoastal Canal. The area is rich in culture. Fort Morgan is a historic masonry Pentagonal bastion fort at the mouth of Mobile Bay. It and Dauphin Island, on which Fort Gaines is situated, enclose Mobile Bay. Named for Revolutionary War hero Daniel Morgan, it was built on the site of the earlier Fort Bowyer, an earthen fortification important to the final land battles of War of 1812. by a cantilever bridge. By the 1960s the town was thriving with family-owned grocery stores, restaurants, cottages, and motels for the summer tourists. To generate business in the quiet fall season, the community arranged fishing rodeos and a National Shrimp Festival began in 1971. Held in October, it has now become a national tourist attraction with upwards of 200,000 people in attendance over a four-day extended weekend. In 1979, development surged with increased construction of condominiums, restaurants, and retail outlets. It was during this time the town became the City of Gulf Shores. Shrimping, oystering and fishing employed almost everyone in the area throughout the early settlement years until the 1970s. Like many coastal towns, commercial fishing has given way to tourism. And today, 26 million lucky visitors flock here each year. The slogan “Small Town, Big Beach” was adopted … and clearly explains why this distinctive destination in the Heart of Dixie is surely the jewel in the crown of awe-inspiring Alabama.

In class when you raised your hand the teacher always said, “If one person asks then there are most likely others who would like to know the answer, too.” With that in mind, here are answers to our guests’ most frequently asked questions. Q: Who owns your vacation rental properties? A: All of our rental properties are privately owned by individuals who place their property on our Kaiser Realty vacation rental program. Because each rental is privately owned, the décor and style varies as you can see from paging through this Vacation Guide or viewing images on our website. Q: What’s the difference between beach homes and condos? A: Really, it is just your preference. Nightly, weekly and monthly rates are available for both beach homes and condos. In the summer season, most beach homes require a Saturday to Saturday stay and a four-night minimum length of stay in the fall season. Condominiums usually have either a two-night or three-night minimum length of stay in the fall and winter. For the best selection, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and make your reservation at least 30 days in advance, longer for longer length of stays. Q: What’s included in my vacation rental? A: All of our properties are fully furnished and come with towels, bed linen, blankets, pillows, essential kitchen items, start-up supply of soap and paper products. On-site amenities vary depending on the complex and property you choose.

Q: How often is housekeeping service? A: Housekeeping is provided at departure. A mid-stay cleaning, can be arranged for a fee. Q: What time is check-in and check-out? A: Too late and too early. (Just kidding.) Check-in is at 4 p.m. and check-out is at 10 a.m. Q: What can we expect the weather to be like? A: Pleasant. Our year-round average temperature is 73°. The warm season is from May to September, with an average daily high temperature above 84°F. The hottest day of the year is July 23, with an average high of 89°F. Fall is known as the “perfect season,” because the weather and Gulf is just that during these months. The cool season is from December to March, with an average daily high temperature below 67°F. The coldest day of the year is January 29, with an average low of 44°F and high of 62°F. Q: Do you take pets? A: Though we are animal lovers, please leave Fido at home or consider contacting an animal boarding service. Be sure to make these arrangements before you confirm your vacation reservation. Q: What if I need to cancel? A: Though it would be very sad for you not to join us for a fabulous beach vacation, you may cancel with at least 30 days advance notice for daily and weekly stays, monthly stays require 90 days advance notice to cancel. Tripp is a real honey who hails right here from the beautiful sugar-white beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama. As his name suggests, Tripp is passionate about travel. When he is not looking for ways to have fun at “work” in the Kaiser Realty office, you can find him strolling the beach looking for seashells, fishing off the pier, hanging ten on his surf board, and he’s not so bad with a golf club either. Tripp loves to explore Alabama’s amazing naturescape, especially biking and hiking the Backcountry trails, which gives him a chance to meet people. While the majority of Gulf Coast residents would consider themselves “transplants” from other parts of the world, a small number of people are lucky enough to have been born and raised with their toes in the sand. For the Kaiser family, not only is the Alabama Gulf Coast “home,” but sharing their love of this 32-mile stretch of beach has become their family business.

Founded in 1980 by Leonard Kaiser, the “middle” of eight children born into a German family, sharing the secret of the Alabama Gulf Coast’s beaches truly became the driving force behind the Kaiser Realty brand. Entering the vacation rental/real estate market with the goal of spreading the word about the beautiful beaches found in the area, Leonard brought his nephew, Randy Kaiser, under his wing to assist in growing the success of the service focused Gulf Shores company.

“After a successful career with the United Parcel Service, the beaches began calling my name,” Glen confesses. “I knew that I could bring the skills and experience I had learned within my corporate career to ensure the growth and longevity of our family’s business; all while welcoming new smiling faces to our home, year after year.”

“As a kid, playing along our beaches, it never hit me how unique of a travel destination we had right under our feet,” Leonard Kaiser shares. “It wasn’t until I began traveling the nation and seeing how other beach destinations were being developed that I knew how truly special of a resource we had right at home.” The uniqueness of the destination is exactly what Kaiser Realty, Inc. first focused on when marketing Gulf Shores & Orange Beach to guests. Less crowded beaches, less development, and the charm of Southern culture aided in drawing guests back year after year. “Gulf Shores & Orange Beach has grown considerably since we first began welcoming guests to the island,” Randy Kaiser explains, “but the charm that first ignited our area’s popularity is still very much here.”

Several Kaiser family members have made their impact on the business throughout the company’s nearly 40-year tenure, encouraging Glen Kaiser, Leonard’s younger brother, to join the family business in 2002.

In 2013, the company joined the Wyndham Vacation Rentals family of brands, and named Glen the executive general manager. Although rarely more than 30 feet wide, rip currents can extend 1,000 feet offshore, reaching 100 feet in width, and can travel up to 3 mph. Some are present a few hours, others are permanent. Rip currents are prevalent after storms. Rip currents may have darker color surf. What To Do • Do not panic or try to swim against the current. • Relax. • If you cannot break out of the current, float calmly until it lessens, swimming parallel to the shore until out of the rip current, or shout and wave for assistance. • The best way to avoid a Rip Current is to heed the Beach Safety flag system. The Alabama Gulf Coast is a melting pot of many unique animals and sea creatures, adding to the colorful landscape and lifestyle associated with the community. One marvelous creature in particular to call our sandy beaches home is the sea turtle, making Gulf Shores & Orange Beach its sacred nesting ground. Nationally protected and monitored by grassroots groups along the coast, sea turtles have grown to become one of the most exciting subjects for beach photography, especially as their hatchlings make their first walk to the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. The city of Gulf Shores has partnered with the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber and the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance to “raise awareness and support of environmental conservation, sustainable tourism, and community arts and culture,” through its Turtle Tracks program. Carried out by the Art on Parade group based in the Gulf Shores & Orange Beach area, Turtle Tracks partners with local businesses, groups and organizations to sponsor unique sea turtle designs that are placed at specific locations along the Alabama Gulf Coast. Each turtle display is made from a custom fiberglass mold and stands about four feet tall and is individually designed by local artists. This trademarked public art project made its debut in 2014 at the 43rd Annual National Shrimp Festival and has had multiple sponsored turtles since, each with their own intricate and unique details.

1. SAND VOLLEYBALL – The feeling of sitting down, the sand between your toes, with your favorite beverage in hand is a feeling that most of us lust after all year round. FUN ECO FACTS ABOUT ALABAMA’S UNSPOILED BEAUTY Alabama’s state parks provide many thousands of visitors each year with the opportunity to share the natural, cultural, and historical assets of the state. From a single park in 1930, the system has expanded to include 22 parks that are vital to conserving the environment and that provide the public with a variety of recreational choices. Currently, there are 48,000 acres of preserved land designed for state parks. The Gulf Coast Alabama State Park system boasts 6,500 acres of protected lands. It includes 2.5 miles of beach, three fresh water lakes, a nationally-recognized scenic nature trail, beach pavilion, fishing pier, picnic area, campground, cabins and cottages and a new 350-room gulf-front lodge and conference center. SANDOLLARS – Indigenous to Gulf waters, these fragile sea creatives have no arms or legs, but move around by tiny spines on their bodies. Sandollars are usually found lying in a bed buried under a layer of sand and are most commonly found by digging your toes in the sand. Nature’s riches indeed!

SEA TURTLES –Since 2003, more than 50,000 endangered Loggerhead, Kemps Ridley and Green Sea Turtles have hatched on the shores of Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Each summer, mother turtles return to the same beaches to lay their eggs. The Alabama’s Share the Beach program rallies volunteers from May through October to patrol the more than 50 miles of nesting habitat. A time-honored tradition by locals and visitors alike is to sponsor a turtle nest. Sponsorships help provide funding for tracking and monitoring equipment and ensure that more turtle hatchlings have the opportunity to make their treks from the dunes to the Gulf.

THE BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN – A symbol of good luck to sailors since ancient times, the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin is not a fish; it is a mammal. They swim in the water, but need air breathe. You’ll find bottlenose dolphins in the warm bay and Gulf waters feeding on fish and frolicking in the boat waves.

MODERATE MONARCHS – With an average year-round temperature of 77 degrees, wildflowers bloom every day of the year in Alabama. Attracted to these flowers, Monarch Butterflies make their annual fall migration along the Gulf Coast to Mexico each year.

NORTHERN FLICKER – The yellowhammer, also known as the northern flicker or yellow-shafted flicker, became the official state bird of Alabama in 1927. Soldiers from Alabama were nicknamed “yellowhammers” in the Civil War due to their grey and yellow uniforms, which matched the colors of the bird.

A Spotlight on Orange Beach’s Family Fishing Expert by Adam Pfaff The Alabama Gulf Coast is well known for its Southern hospitality, sugar white sand beaches, and delicious cuisine. Above all, however, it’s known as a quaint fishing village with a reputation for reeling in some monstrous catches. While tournaments and multi-day charters are usually the talk of the town, some boat captains choose to put the emphasis of their business on building a magical experience for first-time anglers. One of the charter boat captains who believes in making someone’s first time off-shore as special as can be, is Captain Johnny Greene, owner and operator of Intimidator Sportfishing. Greene, a 49-year-old “quintessential outdoorsman,” has been hard at work catering to the needs of his clients since founding Intimidator Sportfishing in 1996, building upon his offerings and delivering outstanding service every step of the way. His gentle demeanor and unrivaled dedication to his craft has made his family business stand out from the competition in the area. Capt. Johnny, as he is fondly called, grew up with a love for fishing and being out on the water. His career began at a commercial fishery, which he admits wasn’t the most “fulfilling” of jobs. After a few years, he purchased his first boat and began serving the Alabama Gulf Coast as a charter boat captain; taking the opportunity to hone his craft and set his apart from others in the industry. “By my mid 20s, I had saved enough money to buy a 50-foot charter boat,” says Greene. “I ran it for five years before selling it in order to build a boat that fit my business’ needs.” Greene lovingly spent eight months building the current Intimidator vessel by hand in 2000; making specific features to allow for full- and multi-day charters, as well as plenty of space for kids and families. In its most current state, Intimidator is designed to sleep 10 people in their own bunks, making it a popular choice for those looking to make their way roughly 150 miles away from Orange Beach, Alabama in search of big game. In 2019, the emphasis of the Intimidator Sportfishing business is still focused around “doing what we were designed to do.” Every year, Greene and his family take time to handle repairs, upgrades, and most importantly, ensuring Coast Guard compliance for their vessel. meticulous records of maintenance and inspections, in order to keep their certification current. “If I wouldn’t put my kids on the boat, and keep them offshore, I don’t want to put any other family on here either,” says Greene in regard to keeping the Intimidator in tip top shape. “The costs of constantly upgrading the boat can be an obstacle, but it’s worth the peace of mind.” While this sailor and his famous boat are known for tracking down some of the best fish in the Gulf of Mexico, his reputation for being a family focused captain is what keeps his clients returning year after year; some for the past 18 years. Running offshore approximately 150 days per year, the majority of his trips are comprised of single day charters. Lucy Buffett’s Signature Summer Seafood Gumbo We love our fresh Gulf seafood along with the people that catch it and cook it. From seafood shacks to swanky white-tablecloth restaurants, Alabama’s Gulf Coast is right in the thick of it, and so is Lucy Buffett at LuLu’s Homepoint Marina. Buffett uses shrimp and crab, but if it’s cool enough for oysters and there are some sweet and pretty ones available, or it’s crawfish season, she will toss those in, too. Lucy’s Signature Summer Seafood Gumbo (Serves 14-16) INGREDIENTS 3 lb. medium wild-caught Gulf shrimp, heads on 2 lb. cooked blue crab claw meat, picked through for shells, keep the meat in big chunks 4 large ripe tomatoes, or 1 (28-ounce) can whole tomatoes with their juices 3/4 cup vegetable oil or bacon grease

2 tbsp. dried thyme 4 bay leaves 1 tsp. dried oregano 1 tsp. dried basil 2 tbsp. LuLu’s Crazy Creola Seasoning (recipe follows), or other Creole seasoning 1/4 cup hot sauce 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 4 blue crab bodies, if available (optional) 2 1/2 lb. fresh okra, chopped into 1/4-inch pieces, or thawed frozen cut okra 2 cups finely chopped green onions 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh parsley 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice

Lulu’s Crazy Creola Seasoning (makes ½ cup) 1 tbsp. sea salt 2 tbsp. granulated garlic or garlic powder 4 tsp. granulated onion or onion powder 1/4 cup paprika 1 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 2 tsp. cayenne pepper 2 tsp. white pepper 1/2 tsp. dried thyme

with a slotted spoon and let them cool. The skins will slip off easily. Remove the cores and coarsely chop the tomatoes over a bowl to retain as much juice as possible. Set aside. To make the roux, in a large stockpot (about 10 quarts), heat the vegetable oil over medium high heat. When the oil is hot, gradually add the flour, whisking continuously, and cook, stirring and adjusting the heat as necessary to keep it from burning, until the roux is a dark mahogany color, 25 to 35 minutes. Be careful, if the roux burns, you will have to start all over again. Add the onion to the roux and stir for 2 to 3 minutes. (The onion will sizzle and steam when it hits the hot roux, so caution is advised. All seasoned gumbo cooks have roux battle scars on one or both arms.) Add the celery and cook, stirring continuously, for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the bell pepper and cook, stirring continuously, for 2 to 3 minutes more. Add the heated stock and the tomatoes with their juices. Stir in the salt, black pepper, cayenne, thyme, bay leaves, oregano, basil, Creole seasoning, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the gumbo to a boil and cook for 5 minutes, then reduce the heat to maintain a slow simmer. Add the crab bodies (if using) and simmer, uncovered, for about 1 hour. Add the okra and bring the gumbo to a boil. Cook for 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to maintain a slow simmer and cook, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until the okra has lost its bright green color and cooked down like the other vegetables. If the gumbo gets too thick, add a little water. If it is too thin, continue to simmer it, uncovered.

1/2 tsp. dried oregano Combine all the ingredients and store in an airtight container. PREPARATION Peel and devein the shrimp. (If you’re making your own stock, reserve the heads and shells to make the stock.) Refrigerate the shrimp and crabmeat until ready to use.

Add the green onion, parsley, and lemon juice. Cover and cook for 15 minutes. Add the shrimp and crab meat, mix well, and cook for 2 minutes. Cover and turn off the heat. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes more to cook the seafood. The gumbo will stay hot for a long time. Remove and discard the bay leaves. Taste and adjust the seasonings; serve over cooked white rice with French bread and butter.

Though many places serve up this frozen delight made from vodka, dark Crème de Cacao, Kahlúa, and vanilla ice cream well, you haven’t lived until you have been “bushwacked” at the Flora-Bama. ORANGE BEACH ATTITUDE Like a classic dreamsicle with an adult twist, Island Time Daiquiri Bar at The Wharf in Orange Beach pours the Orange Beach Attitude. A potent mix of Everclear, vodka, and some citrus goodness, grab one of these tasty brain freezers and wander along Main Street with your designated driver.

Few things go better together than fresh Gulf seafood and craft beer. Luckily for Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, the booming craft beer movement across the state of Alabama has landed some amazing brews within reach of vacationers. Historically, tight legislative restrictions on alcohol by volume (ABV) limitations kept enthusiastic brewers from breaking away from traditional lagers and easy-drinking ales, while also slowing the flow of regional beers coming within the state lines. More than a decade ago, the grassroots beer purveyors from the “Free The Hops” campaign began unifying the state’s barley-fans in an effort for the state of Alabama to join other regional alterations to alcohol laws. In 2009, legislation was updated, taking the maximum beverage alcohol by volume (ABV) from six to 13.9 percent, not only allowing craft beer from around the world to be much more freely imported within the state, but also opened the door for craft brewers who call Alabama “home,” to begin showcasing their talents. While craft beer has been burgeoning in Alabama, thanks in part to largescale breweries such as Avondale, Back Forty, and Good People, the Mobile and Baldwin County brew scenes have also seen a rise in not only popularity, but notoriety. Whether it’s the ever-popular Imperial Pale Ales (IPA), southern inspired Pilsners, or the creative Sours being shipped around the state, Baldwin County has made its mark thanks in part to the bustling restaurant scene in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach. FAIRHOPE BREWERY – When the crew at Fairhope Brewery opened their taproom doors in January of 2013, the public was eager and ready for the exciting business to put the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay on the map. Launching a few choice brews, they quickly gained popularity for their presence at area restaurants as well as their ultra-creative

BEACH WEDDING Blaine Dunsmore & Jordan Hargrove

THE PROPOSAL: Jordan, 28, invited Blaine, 31, to sit at his table at a Huntsville Young Professionals event. After discussing soccer, he asked her to lunch and the two began dating. Jordan planned his proposal with two of their Icelandic friends along with their families. While on a trip to Reykjavik, Iceland, Jordan convinced a staff member to hide the ring while they explored the hot springs. He retrieved the ring and proposed to Blaine in the waters of the Blue Lagoon. THE BIG DAY: Awash in gorgeous guava and gray, a “coral beach” theme set the perfect mood for this vibrant couple and cheery Drottningholm House in Nordic Villas was an ideal setting for the rehearsal, wedding ceremony and reception for this fairytale Orange Beach wedding. SPECIAL MOMENT FOR THE BRIDE: “When my grandfather, who officiated our wedding, said, ‘You may now kiss my grand daughter’ at the end of the ceremony.” THE GROOM MAKES A SPLASH: Jordan was thrown into the Gulf by all his groomsmen!
