Leading Hotels: Activities 1-3 Introduction These work based activities provide opportunities for you to use and develop your skills in ICT and Maths and to find out about the leading hotels in the UK.
Situation You are undertaking a work experience placement with the British Hospitality Association. Your work experience supervisor needs your help in sorting out and presenting some information about hotels. The information is going to be used for a report the BHA is preparing about the hotel sector in the UK. Activity 1 Table 1 shows the top ten hotel groups with more than 200 bedrooms in the UK. The companies are listed in alphabetical order (A – Z). The table also shows the number of hotels in the UK that each company has and the brands. (a) Rank the hotel companies 1 to 10, in order of size by the number of hotels in the UK. (b) Revise the table so that the companies are listed in order of rank by the number of hotels in the UK, rather than alphabetically. Activity 2 Draw a bar graph to illustrate the information on hotel numbers in the table you revised in activity 1(b). Activity 3 The BHA needs to find out where in the UK these leading companies have hotels. Carry out research using the internet, Yellow Pages, the telephone directory, a hotel guide or other sources to find out if any of the hotel companies and the brands from the tables are located in your local area. Keep a list of each hotel’s address and telephone number, and any other information available such as the size, range of facilities, price range etc. (Remember to keep a note of your sources.) Produce a brief description of your findings for your work experience supervisor. You might like to consider these questions: •
Did you think there would be more or less hotels in your area?
•
Is there anything the hotels in your list have in common, for example similar locations, same price range, similar range of facilities? Springboard Education at: http://education.springboarduk.net and http://resource-gateway.co.uk
