Leading Hotels: Activities 4-6 Introduction These work based activities build on Activities 1 to 3. They provide further opportunities for you to use and develop your skills in ICT and Maths while also increasing your knowledge of the hotel sector in the UK.

Situation You are undertaking a work experience placement with the British Hospitality Association. Your work experience supervisor needs your help in sorting out and presenting some information about hotels. The information is going to be used for a report the BHA is preparing about the UK hotel sector. Activity 4 Table 2 is similar to Table 1 (from Activity 1), but in addition to giving the number of hotels that each of these leading hotel companies has in the UK and their brands, Table 2 records the number of bedrooms each company has in the UK. (a) Using the information in Table 2, rank the hotel companies 1 to 10, in order of size by the number of bedrooms in the UK. (b) Now revise Table 2 so that the companies are listed in order of rank by the number of bedrooms in the UK. (c) Write a brief description of your revised Table 2, comparing the content with your revised Table 1 from Activity 1 (b). You might like to comment on: •

whether any hotel companies are ranked the same in both tables

whether it matters which approach to ranking the hotels is used

other ways of ranking hotel companies and/or sorting them into different categories

Activity 5 Draw charts or graphs to illustrate in different ways the information in your revised Table 2 about the top 10 hotel groups and the number of hotel bedrooms they have in the UK. Activity 6 Your Supervisor needs information for a careers magazine. Choose one area of hotel work that interests you such as reception, housekeeping, kitchen, front of house management. Carry out research to find out about the career opportunities in the UK and/or abroad offered by one of the hotel companies listed in the tables and the career opportunities offered by a small hotel company not listed in the tables. Compare your findings.
